s pen notes autosave - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

When I take out the pen I like can write some notes, but if I put back the stylus in its original place, the note get autosaved in notes, and if I extract again the pen i find a new empty sheet, while instead there are context where I could find really useful that extracting back the pen would like to add some new content, is that a possibility?
a workaround would be to open a white background note, deactivate the air function( that show all the option of the pen) and keep writing on the white screen, but the point is that in this way I lose the experience real paper.
There is a way estracting the pen to find the content previously written directly on the screen?

EDIT: <Resolved>
I found my self a work around,
first of all you go to visibility, and select the negative vision option,
then you open a note ( that is in black background) and before to put the pen in the its place, you switch off with the right hardware button the screen. then when you need again just activate with the index finger the screen and extract the pen, the content previously written will be in memory and with the black background,
the negative side is that you have to switch off the vision negative mode when you need to use the phone again, if you are not comfortable with inverted colors mode

While on the subject. If I open note with the wheel icon selector and select create a Note it looks totally different than if I go into the notes app to compose a Note. The second method causes issues due to my wrist resting on the bottom of the screen and interrupting with my S pen .

just tried mine work really good, if a create a note using the air function, no wrist or palm interruptions, maybe you messed up some setting?

With air function creating a Note is okay. It's only when I open Notes from within the Samsung app folder is where I have the problem with wrist intererupt.
The pics I posted shows how that app layout is depending on how you open the app.

As you know, depending on how you create a new note, the layout is different with different editing options, quick memo won't have all the additional options, text, add photo etc. like creating a standard note does.
The app saves them with different file names also, xxx.sdoc, screenoff_xxx.sdoc, screenon_xxx.sdoc, saved_screenon_xxx.sdoc.
I'm still used to & prefer using the old S Notes although the Samsung Notes has features that I like too. Plus with screen off memos I have no choice but to use Samsung Notes. So I use both but I tend to use S Notes more. I hate that Samsung Notes saves the files in the data partion where as S Notes saves them in storage. Much easier to archive/back up that way. I don't use cloud services for anything.

Hi, thanks. You mean on how I launch the Notes app drives what the lay out looks like ? As it surely seems to be the case here for me. Launching Notes app via the wheel ( spen) layout is different to if I go into the Samsung folder and launch Notes. The latter causes wrist intererupt. Many thanks.

Yes exactly, creating a note which I call a "quick memo" with either screen off memo, double tapping on an bscreen with the button on spen held down, or by 'create note' in the air command will only give you spen writing functionality. If you create a note from within the Samsung Notes app, you will get full editing functionaly... spen writing, spen to text, add images, etc.
However, after you save a quick memo, when you go to edit it you will get full editing functionality. My guess is Samsung did this to kind or mimic action memo with older S Notes. But with S Notes it's different, action memos won't have the same editing features that regular notes do even after they have been saved.
What type of issue do you have with your wrist? With regular notes or editing a quick memo you'll get a tool bar at the bottom, maybe your wrist touches that by accident? If yes you can move that tool bar to a different location on the screen, maybe try moving it up or to the top if that's the case?

With a Note created through any way (Quick note though air-command or double tap, or 'normal' through Notes menu) you can switch on/off S-pen only in the menu (3-dots).
That setting is remembered for next use, separately for 'quick note' and 'regular note. So one or both types of Notes can be set to 'switch off S-pen' or 'S-pen only' as you want it to be...

Map X Button App to hardware button

I have been through several very long threads on this and several people have asked but no one ever answers. I am a big fan of the button mapping programs and want to be able to call up the HTC app which shows the currently running programs. I am not even sure what to call it, as I have seen it as X Button, and also as Task Manager. However, I am not looking for the settings menu Task Manager utility which is the full fledged program allowing some setting changes and adding programs to the excluded list, etc. Rather I am looking for the Pop Up menu that comes up when you tap and hold the close button. I have search my device for every .EXE and tried them all, yet I still can not figure out how to call this program directly. Is this not possible? Is it similar to a today plug in that requires you to be on the Tday screen to run it? Any help would be appreciated.
I believe Spb Pocket Plus can do this. It has a button mapper, but you can also set "OK" (Butto 4) to "[Close]" (from the default "<Ok/Close>") and that should work.
But thats way on the back of the phone when using the slide out keyboard.

Sorry I thought you were referring to the OK button below the jog dial. My bad.
It's not, really. There are three "OK" buttons. One on the faceplate, one on the left-hand side, and one on the slide out keyboard. I've use the new version of Pocket Plus to map the one on the face plate to "OK" with a press and "Close" on a long press. The button hesh is referring to is the one on the face plate (under the "End" button).
Of course, this is the TyTN II layout, so the Tilt may be different. Key point - there is a way to do what you want with Pocket Plus - map a button (any one you like) to "[Close Button Context Menu]" which is a function that Pocket Plus will add for you (it won't exist without it installed).
still not helping...
i have also read about 150 pages worth of posts to no avail on this topic and would greatly appreciate a solution. i think that some of you are missing the question entirely though so im going to give a crack at presenting the question a little bit clearer.
What we are trying to do here is map a hardware button to whatever process it is that brings up the "HTC X-Button" menu. The specific menu we want is the drop down that appears when the upper right corner is tapped from the today screen. the thread i got the app from originally i cant seem to find for some reason, but heres a link to one i did find link. Heres a screen shot.

we do not want to know if there is another task switching application with these features such as the spb product or any others.
thanks in advance for any responses and hope this clears things up a bit.
dislexicmofo has it right. I was looking to call the program "HTC X-Button" from a button instead of a stylis tap. The "HTC X-Button" does not show up as an application, and I can not figure out how to call it directly by another means. I am guessing it may depend on the today screen being in the foreground, however, I would like it to come up without any regard to the foreground application.
FWIW, I finally gave up and installed InClose, as it shows up as a program under the Applications List.
As for SPB, I like their stuff, just not enough to pay for it and I have had many compability problems in the past (although that was several iterations ago),.
So even if SPB did provide this feature, I was looking for a freeware variation.
I tried to ask this same question in the "Latest Cabs for Kaisers" thread stickied at the top:

i have installed HTC Task manager v2.00 (build 30740) from dutty's first post. (i can't seem to get the other one to install - which is fine). anyway, this task manager has a "quick menu" in the upper right hand corner of your today screen that you can click with your stylus and that lists all your running applications nicely. i would like to create a short-cut to this quick menu, but i'm not sure how to do it because it is just a part of the task manager program and not a program itself. Does anyone have any ideas? The reason I like this quick menu better than the list you get when you click on the task manager icon is because the list does not go away after you make a single selection. in other words, you can close out several programs from the list instead of having to bring the list back up after you close each application. any ideas?

I don't understand how people can live without this...
It's awful not having a hotkey to the tasklist...
Can this simple thing not be done ?
EDIT: AE Button plus has sorted things out for me
I remember a softkey app back in the wizard days. This closed the program by holding the right softkey down. Forgot what it was called.

Smartskey. I use it almost purely for that reason alone. Press and hold the right softkey and it closes the current app like tapping the X. Or press and hold the left softkey and it opens the Start Menu (which really isn't needed on the Kaiser since there is a Start menu button already, but then you could remap that if you wanted).
you're not going to be able to do that. AS someone else said it is depended upong the today screen being in the foreground. The intent of the original app wasn't to be a task switcher, but just a simple task manager to be able to close app from the tapping the X button. That was the original design of ver1. Ver2 brought the additional buttons and the overall look, but it's still not a task switcher and it's hooked into the OS to work only when the today is present.
I know you don't want to hear this but SPB PP4 is the app that will do what you want, and it was designed to do what you want from it's creation. Not only can you pull down the task list in any app (not just today screen) but you can also map the PPT button to their alt+tab switcher, which works just like windows alt+tab combo.
I like the look of the HTC one and the size of the buttons within it, by I find myself using PPC4 more and more...
ya, me neither - i found "VBar" which i mapped to a hardware button and which initializes the X button pulldown, wherein you can switch tasks, close apps, or close the vBar itself (which has a kinda cheesy image-but not bad for free!) haven't figured out how to program it yet? . . . but works right out of the box.
ciao

FWIW, I wound up using AEB+, which, strictly speaking is not necessasy for my original question, but it allows you to assign an app close vs an app hide to the press and hold of the OK key. So essentially is does the same thing as the Softskey and more.
I then installed InClose Mobile. You CAN map this to the hardware button and it will open regardless of whether you are on the today screen or not. If you try it, be sure to turn off the HTC button as it will cause a conflict.
VJOkButt allows you to simulate a click on the screen.
I have used it in conjunction with pBar (a better replacement for HTC Task manager) or you can just assign a shortcut to pBar to a hardware button. This was the easiest way for me.
Is there a way to map the front-face "OK" button (button 4, I believe) to close the opened application without using some kind of extra button mapper?
Using Contacts to make a phone call and then having to close the contacts program afterwards without simply pushing a button is really annoying. Remapping the OK button to close applications entirely would be nice.

Gscroll - navigate & scroll via accelerometer & touch pad!

A new application has been released.
GScroll - you can scroll/navigate using the accelerometer and/or capacitive touch pad zones.
demo (limited to 5 minutes) avaiable at http://www.mobilesrc.com/GScroll.aspx

Your name goes in Start-->Settings-->Personal (Tab)-->Owner Information
Owner name is a standard way of generating registration keys.
Also, I don't think we need a keygen for a $4.99 app. Eat one less Big Mac this week and support the developer. That said, has anyone gotten the accelerometer based scrolling to work? I've tried tapping, double-tapping, tapping and holding, double tapping and holding, etc on both the center (enter) button as well as on the Nav circle around the perimeter (the wording in the usage guide was somewhat vague) and nothing seems to work. Anybody got this to work? The other functions seem to be working OK, if not 100% reliably.
this is the iphones fault
a simple program like this would never have been charged for
then the iphones damn app store comes along and every program wants money now :/

I got it to work no problems, just double tap the center button(don't depress it, just touch) and you'll feel a short vibration to let you know its enabled. Its pretty awesome to just put a slight angle on phone and be able to flip through photos, emails, music etc right from home screen without pushing buttons, just see them flipping through until you hold phone flat to stop. I really like the app launcher as well. A well spent 5 bucks.

I think ill purchase it. LIKE YOU SHOULD DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't really like the scroll feature as i use ftouchsl but I like having 4 extra buttons. so i might buy it also going to test it a little bit first
the 4 buttons does seem nice
one for start
one for file explorer and a surprise for the other 2 i guess
the app is well worth the 5 bucks.

I don't think the tilt scrolling is good for using in apps either, but it is a neat feature for scrolling through media. And plus you can disable/enable it without opening options, so its easy to turn on/off. I find the touchpad easier for a lot of the scrolling than actually using touchscreen though.

I wonder if something I have installed is conflicting with GScroll, because the tilt scrolling absolutely, positively won't work for me. I'm not depressing the physical button, just touching the capacitive face, so unfortunately that's not the issue. The only thing I can think of that could be conflicting is the SmartTouch scroll wheel functionality, but that is built into everyone's ROM from the factory. I've added a few additional programs to use with SmartTouch (through Schaps Advanced Config), but since the base functionality is already built in I wouldn't think it would be an issue. Anybody else have trouble getting it to work?
Some of the programs features are a bit useless (like the swipe to send arrow keys...isn't it just easier to push the actual arrow key that your finger is right next to anyway?), but a lot of the features are great. The four extra mappable buttons are awesome to have for these phones. The swipe to scroll is also a bit easier than reaching up on the screen for a scroll bar. If only this stupid tilt scrolling would work. I probably wouldn't even use it that much, but now I have to get it working, lol. All in all, I'm glad I paid 5 bucks if for nothing else than the four extra mappable keys. Although I really thought someone at XDA would have already made a freeware release, 4.99 is such a reasonable price why not buy it.
[Edit: A reinstall of the program fixed my issues. Tilt scrolling is working, and I can now go on happily not using it ]

Not really.. even if you tilt more it doesn't accelerate (as you would keep pressing a navigation key).
Some suggestions for the developer:
- tilt acceleration, if we tilt more the device the scrolling/navigation speed should accelerate
- an option to chose one of the following (for d-pad navigation):
tap & drag to a direction (eg: tap top, drag down => will keep scrolling/send navigation keep till I get my finger off from touch area. very useful when we need to scroll something large. the same as tilt acceleration suggestion, if we keep the finger on the touch area it will actually accelerate the scrolling, and not sending navigation key with pauses)
simple tap for scrolling/navigation. the touch area should be divided in 4 or 5 zones (one for click/enter key). if we keep the finger on the touch area it will keep scrolling/send navigation key)
- Gscroll is not compatible with all games (for eg: Tomb Raider)
BTW, tilt navigation works for me. Have to tap twice on the sensitive d-pad area (center circle). It vibrates when the tilt navigation is enable. Taping the capacitive area will disable the tilt navigation.
One bug found, touch shot doesn't work in Camera application if GScroll is active
Wow, now that I have the tilt scrolling working I actually really like it. I can see what others are saying about it not being particularly useful in long lists (file explorer, etc), but using the smart select mode in TF3D is AWESOME. Anybody that loved the teaser videos for schaps' TouchXperience ROMs will find that GScroll gives you a lot of those cool abilities to flick (tilt) your way through the entire TF3D menu. Flicking through songs, contacts, pictures, text messages, etc is really cool!
My main complaint now is just that the double-tap recognition is not 100% accurate. I think just holding the center button would be a better means of activating tilt scrolling. Then just release it when you want to stop. I wonder how hard that would be to change.
Has anyone contacted the developer? Has he/she been responsive?

HTC Task Manager for all programs?

Good day,
I've been fiddling around with my new FUZE, and I really like using the HTC Task Manager to switch between programs while I multitask. The question is, is there a way to enable it so the Task Manager icon replaces the typical "X" that shows up for running programs?
From what I know if it now, the only way to access the menu is to go to the Today screen. So basically, every time I want to switch to a different program, I have to press the Home button and access the Task Manager from there. It's quite annoying, and I want to see if it's possible to switch between programs using the Task Manager without having to go to the Today screen.
I also know that some windows show "ok" instead of the typical X, usually for editing settings for certain things. I don't want the Task Manager to replace the "ok"s, just the "X"s, since most of the time you have to click the "ok"s to save whatever settings you've set in that window.
Thanks in advance!

You might want to check out gscroll (mobilesrc.com). It allows you to switch between apps without going back to the today screen. A horizontal swipe (left to right) across the top of the capacitative pad brings up a little pop-up that shows all the live apps running. You have to be quick (hopefully they fix that), but if you tap the icon you want to go to, that app is then brought up. Otherwise, swiping switches between the last two apps used.

Interesting. So what you're saying is that it's currently not possible to set the default behavior of HTC's Task Manager to show outside of the Today screen? A friend of mine has pointed me to another program called WkTask, and it functions as a program launcher as well as a task manager, no matter what program you're running. It's freeware, so I'm going to give it a shot.

No, I'm not saying that; I actually have no clue if you can get the task manager to appear like you want it to. You may well be able to do it. All I know is that for 5 bucks, you can accomplish the same function using gscroll. It's actually easier, because clicking on the quick menu icon takes a bit of concentration (it's real easy to miss and hit whatever's next to or below it instead). The swipe across the capacitative pad (above the d-pad button) is pretty fool-proof, once you get used to it. Plus, it's kind of cool. You can also use gscroll as a program launcher (up to 4 pre-set programs), fwiw.
WkTask may be the ticket for you, though. I've never used it myself.
Or maybe install program QuickMenu (freeware): http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-quickmenu-v2-7.html
I've tried Wisbar, QuickMenu, and gScroll and found them buggy on the Fuze. Wisbar will do what you want but mucks up TF3D. QuickMenu showed potential but cluttered the StartMenu. I couldn't figure out to get gScroll to work right but then I'm stupid.
actually, can someone tell me which file corresponds to the large task manager that comes up when u hit the top right? ive been trying to find it so i can map it in wisbar? thanks in advance
You mean the quick menu? I think this is what you want (just the cab name):
HTC_TASK_MANAGER_2_1_34563_3R.CAB
yep, the actual quick menu. but, i dont see the htctaskmanager. i see taskmanager.exe and taskmanagerapplite.exe. but, neither one of those is the actual quick menu. let me check again it is in windows correct?
Look up "Alt+Tab"... a little program that performs an ALT+Tab command on a Windows PC.
Here are several that I've used in the past.
TaskSwitch+

I'd recommend giving Quickmenu 2.8 another chance. Once you run once it automatically starts on soft reset and its very customizable. I'll just run down the list of things I change from initial install and I end up with only 5 choices when the start menu pops down. It show very small and the 5 choices are "Running Tasks, QuickMenu, Recent, Programs, Settings" they all show as a pop-out menu so its very aesthetically pleasing. OK... here's how its done.
Start --> QuickMenu --> Option...
Options screen pops up --> Here's some screen shots of the choices I use. All menu view items have check in show as sub menu (that makes it a pop-out menu instead of listing in start). No need to move checked items up, only did because they wouldnt show in screenshot otherwise. Other tabs can be left stock or customized to suite you.
Hope that helps.
Also HUGE shout out to EVERYONE on this forum who helps us all have the baddest phones available!!!
i use quickmenu.
migh tgive gscroll a try.
So basically, people are recommending Quickmenu most of all. Personally, I found it to be one of the more practical apps to use, since I love how it doubles as a task manager as well as a start menu replacement. It's great not having to open up a separate window to access my programs.
I've also tried using WkTask, but it's quirky and doesn't work in ways I like it to.
I reassigned Long Send
to the WM6 taskmanager to do what you want to do.
i also want this, how to replace the "X" with the task manager or just put task manager in all apps, regards!
How did you do it?

so that the quick menu pops up when in applications?
It's bugged me for ages but only started looking for solutions today...
Cheers.
I have asked this before, even in the mort script thread.
Dont think it possible yet my friend,
there are loads of other task managers that pop up in all programs or by the remap of a key.Just have to search for which suits you.
I havent found one that suits me completely ( Guess am fussy )
Touch Commanders one is of my faves but is so buggy,Showcase is ok too.
Pending what ROM you use guys long press SEND (not END) will pop up a task manager, right softkey "switch to" ... done. No harm no foul just as easy as I wrote.
SEND is the "phone button" bottom left in case you don't know or remember.
Hi there, dont know if you are still looking for a solution but try installing htc task manager, after that you should be able to bring up task manager by holding down the answer key until it pops up, cheers

It uses IE9's core, so it should work.
Download Next Browser today, because it's on sale for a limited time!
Playing with the trial now. I like the live tile flipping and showing your tabs.

Sure. I've done nothing but use your browser since my last post. My thoughts, after using it on a Focus, running the trial version, YMMV:
I love swiping tabs. I love even more that yours seems to be fast and very little stutter flicking tab through tab.
I like the big back arrow and that it's the same design as the other on WP. Feels like it belongs.
Pinch to zoom and scrolling seems fast and responsive.
Swiping down to get tabs is different. Where it falls apart? We are all trained to flick the shade back up after we are done with it. Obviously, this is only an issue when you try to close a tab but that's counter intuitive as well. I want to press and see an X not hit the button, let alone go all the way down to the back button to get out of the shade. This needs work. It works well when switching tabs, bringing you quickly to your page and rolling up but the other stuff is counter intuitive to me.
Really digging the address bar at the bottom.
Originally I thought the arrow box was an old style zoom to page but, obviously, once press reveal it hides the address bar. A bit of a funky solution but I love full screens. However this ties into something else I have difficulty with: accessing the setting button. It's so difficult hitting those three buttons, man. All the options are cool once you get into the menu but getting there is a PITA. Why not make a menu box, three dots, on the right side of the page and switch the hide the address bar to the left?
You get special props for a Live Tile. I'd even give you a sloppy kiss if you could eliminate the Next Browser front and just make it flip with all my tabs.
Overall? Very nice!
Thanks for all that feedback! I'm always looking for ways to improve Next Browser. To help with the settings issue, you should know that you can actually access it as well by swiping from the bottom of the screen (or from the address bar if you're accidentally hitting buttons).
Does it save passwords and login details?

Thanks for asking. The answer is yes for the most part.
Anything IE supports it should handle just fine. It's not really in my control, but rather handled by the OS. I have noticed a few sites not working though, even in Internet Explorer.
I should be able to submit the next update by Friday. This will be a pretty big update. For more info, Facebook is the best place to follow Next Browser. (There's also an RSS feed if that's better.)

possible improvements I'd like to see
Thanks very much for a great browser. I've bought the full version and have some requests. I'm not sure if you can do much about them, as it's based on IE9, but here goes.
* I would like to see the back button removed (or make it an option) and replaced with the three dots for settings. I like the look of the button, but it's just not necessary as it then gives me two back buttons on top of each other - we've all already got a back button directly beneath it on the phone. So I see it as redundant. As a previous poster mentioned, hitting those 3 dots, even with a swipe is too difficult, so I think they should go there.
* I'd like to see the extra options pop up beneath the address bar, like with Vable browser, when you hit the extras menu button.
* I'd love a refresh button next to the +tab button as i use that quite frequently.
* I'd like to see a way to add the current page to your faves/bookmarks quicker. A star on the toolbar, perhaps?
These thoughts aren't necessarily very well thought-through. I like how you do some things, and equally, how vable browser does some things. I guess i'd kind of like a mashup of the two. I keep pinning one, then the other to my home screen.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely try to do something with the settings to change the toolbar.
Very good: Design and idea. Also a big + for the google search - bing brings not nearly the same results.
But it´s slower than IE, no chance for easy access to the bookmarks, also no easy way to create them. No way to choose between mobile sites and websites in the settings, the dock shows the wrong symbols (lock, when it´s unlocked, open, when it´s locked). An easy access to the settings, also to the saved passwords would be also helpful. Switch down doesn´t work always. In the test version it worked better.
I think, there is much to do.
I wish you good luck for your work.

Vla watch review (a.k.a. "Is there such a thing as a decent Pebble watch replacement?")

Hi all,
It's been some time since the Pebble hit the market through Kickstarter, and various iterations of the simple yet elegant/efficient smartwatch appeared over time.
Unfortunately, the Pebble adventure didn't end as well as we could have wished, and even though Rebble gives us a much needed life extension, thousands of Pebble users have been looking for a proper Pebble replacement.
Of course, as usual, eveyone has different needs/expectations/tastes, so in the smartwatch department, obviously, one size does not fit all, so take what follows with a grain of salt, after all it's just a personal opinion.
Without further ado, let's talk about the Vla smartwatch. You can purchase it online on your usual Chinese gadget website (Aliexpress, Banggood...) for around US$ 50, and it does look very much like a Pebble. But does it live up to the expectation?
The package itself is quite nice, and the watch ships with a silicon band and a magnetic charging cable (which I replaced by the mesh band you can (almost) see on the pictures).

The watch has three buttons on the right side, one on the left side, and the screen isn't a touchscreen, so it really is a good impersonation of a Pebble watch. On the back of the watch, there's a heart rate sensor, like on so many smartwatches today:
Starting from the main watchface screen, a short press on the upper right button launches the "Calendar" view (more on this later), while a long press reverses the display's colors:
A short press on the bottom right button launches the "QR Code" view (also, more on this later), and a long press gives the same result.
A short press on the left button gets you back one level when navigating in the menus, and a long press (about one second) switches on the backlight.
Finally, a short (or long, for that matter) press on the middle right button launches the watch's menu:
I'll get to the watchface choice later, when describing the settings, for now let's see what the various "applications" are, and how useful they are.
First in the menu is the "Today" screen:
Not much to see here, the watch displays your location, and most probably the associated weather... if you live in China! Outside of China, this screen is unfortunately completely useless.
The second menu item is the "Pedometer" view:
I didn't make any serious acuracy test, I expect the values given here to be as good as with any other activity tracker. Notice the little downward-pointing triangle at the bottom of the screen? It tells you that you can use the up/down buttons on the right to scroll the display, and that lets you access to the last seven days readings. There is no sync whatsoever between the watch and the phone companion application that I could find, so if you live by the numbers and expect to be able to log your activity in a durable way, you're in for a disapointment! No sync either with Google Fit or any activity tracking platform. On the bright side, at least you don't have to worry about your data being accessible online by hackers! ;-)
The third menu item is "Hear Rate", and is rather self-explanatory (on demand HR):
Not much to say here either, there's no data sync with the phone, like the pedometer, so no logging, you can only have the HR displayed on the watchface if you select the "Sport" one, otherwise you have to get to this screen to have a HR reading.
The fourth menu item is labeled "Reminder", but I'm convinced it would rather be labeled "Alarms", because that's what it is:
You can setup up to four alarms, with a decent choice of recurrence options:
Note that you can find a "Reminder" page on the phone companion application, which won't let you program alarms (that's done here on the watch), but which lets you handle the notifications sent by the phone to the watch.
The fifth menu item is "Tools", and it gives you access to a second level screen with various, well, utilities:
More in a second post...
The first tool is a calendar:
It might look useful, but then, forget about syncing with your own calendar(s), all it does is just display a month grid, with the current day highlighted. You can change the year or month to display something else than the current month, but that's about it. Not really useful, I'm afraid.
The second tool displays any Memo that you have previously entered on the phone companion application:
The good news is that it seems to handle some accented characters... There are some size constraints, the title must be 10 characters max, and the text 2000 characters max. Also, did I mention that when the memo is displayed, after a couple of seconds without any button press you're sent back to the watchface view. How useful it really is actually depends on your usage pattern...
The third tool is labeled "Album". It lets you display photos previously inserted on the watch through the companion phone application. Beware, though, the resolution is (very) low and it's black & white only, so I don't know what good it would be to put pictures of your beloved ones on your watch. Your mileage may vary, of course!
The Fourth tool is a "QR Code" display screen. This one might actually be useful, if you use QR codes frequently:
The way it works is that you first scan a QR Code using the companion phone application, and it'll be stored on your watch. Might be handy for a business card, maybe, or the URL of your website?
The fifth tool is "Fake Call":
I wasn't able to make it work, I suppose that when you press the middle right button it should make your phone ring as if you were receiving a call... Why not. If you can make it work!
The sixth tool is "Inbox", and displays whatever message (i.e. text notification) you have stored on your watch. There was no such messages on my watch, despite the fact that I'm supposed to receive SMS notifications, so I don't know how efficient this actually is:
And that's it for the "Tools" Screen.
Next post will be about the Setting screen.
Here's what the "Settings" screen looks like:
There you can set the date & time manually (there's no automatic time/date sync with your phone, it seems, so manual is the only way to go). The user interface is a bit weird at first, but does the job: upper button decreases the highlighted value, lower button increases it, and middle button switches to the next selectable field. The back (left) button exits the Setting page, and if you have made any change it does ask nicely if you want to save or cancel those modifications:
Below the date & time settings, you can select one of four watchfaces:
digi:
clock:
pic:
sport:
The pic watchface takes the last photo you have uploaded in the Album of the watch, and displays the time in a box at the bottom of the screen, in digital format. I didn't test if you could upload multiple photos, by the way...
Remember also that you can reverse black and white by a long press on the upper right button on the main watchface screen, except for the pic watchface.
The "Home" setting can be set to auto or manual, but I couldn't see what it actually does.
The Airplane mode can be switched on/off if needed.
The Language seems to be changeable, but on the firmware I was using English was the only choice.
Last but not least, you have the option to reset the watch by erasing all the content and settings.
Next post will cover the Android phone companion application.
The watch comes with instructions to download the companion application, but unfortunately it's not available in the Google Store (well, obviously, it's a Chinese product) so you have to make a leap of faith and download the apk from the vendor's website:
There's a "Various tools download" at the bottom of the page you get to when flashing the QR Code displayed on the watch or the paper doc.
Almost all the stuff is in Chinese, but you can download the English watch firmware (look for the second link, starting with "1.4.0", as well as the apk of the Android application (the third link, ending with "(v1.0.8)". The application will detect updates, at the moment I have the v1.1.7 installed.
The official website is vlawatch . com, and their email info @ vlawatch . com, if this helps you satisfy your curiosity!
The main screen displays the current time as would be displayed on the watch with the digi watchface (regardless of the watchface actually selected on your watch) and the connection status:
You can access a choice of wallpapers to be downloaded on the watch using the first menu item, Wallpaper:
The second menu item, Reminder, lets you select which notifications (from a very limited set) and when you want them to show up on your watch:
The third menu item, Memo, lets you upload memos to the watch:
The fourth menu item, Upload Photo, does a good job of converting your favorite photo for a low res black and white display, but the result is only as good as can be expected...
The fifth menu item, Card Emulation, looks promising, but you have to first dump the content of a NFC card using the appropriate tool (or maybe phone application? I don't have a compatible card anyway), then you should be able to import it to the watch. Didn't test that feature, though.
The last menu item, QR Code, lets you scan a QR code to import and display it on the watch later:
You can access the Settings screen by taping on the gear icon in the top left corner of the main screen.
The Settings screen shows the watch's name (CityA_xxxx), the xxxx being the last four digits of the serial number displayed just below:
You can setup your personal info (gender, age, height, etc.) using the first menu item:
You can also handle the phone application update and watch firmware update from the Setting screen, and that's about it.
My last post will be about the usefulness of this watch.
So, after describing what you can do with the watch and its phone companion application, what's the verdict when it comes to usability? Does it actually replace a Pebble watch?
I've been using the Vla watch for about two to three months. I've also played with other Pebble replacement candidates like the Lilygo T-watch 2020 or the PineTime during that time span, but I was mainly using the Vla watch.
What I like about the Vla watch is the simplicity of the hardware, which is really Pebble-like. The build quality feels less "sturdy", lighter than the original Pebble, but it's comparable to a Pebble 2 IMHO. The battery life is simply amazing! The Vla watch seems to have been launched through a crowdfunding campaing (on Indiegogo?), and claimed 90 days of battery life, which seemed preposterous at the time, but in my experience, with limited watch interaction and few notifications, the battery was still not depleted after two full months of usage. Quite a performance, and anyway much better than a Pebble!
What I don't like is that there is very little possible configuration on the watch (only four pre-set watchfaces instead of thousands on the Pebble), no addon applications, and the bundled applications are severyly limited or just worthless. There's also no sync/logging of the heart rate or pedometer data, and no sport logging application. Last but not least the user interface is much worse than the Pebble one: small fonts (I'm getting old and need reading glasses now...), poor interface navigation. The backlight is close to useless: it doesn't activate when you press a button, like on the Pebble, but only if you long-press the left (back) button. Which means that you have no backlight when navigating through the menus, because this button will jump you back to the main watchface screen!!! So you can't setup an alarm in the dark, for instance. :-( It's too bad because the backlight itself is doing the job, when you're on the watchface. The number of notifications you can redirect to the watch is too limited to fit my needs, too.
All in all, if you only need (very) basic "smart" functions on your watch, this one can do the job, and the battery life is such that you really never have to worry about charging it.
But if you like to tinker with your watch (custom watchfaces & apps), if the fitness part is important for you or if you spend half the day reading notifications on your watch, then clearly the Vla watch will disappoint you.
I hope that you found this review interesting or useful, do not hesitate to chime in with your comments, meanwhile I keep on searching for the missing link, the graal that will replace my Pebble!
