I've stuggled on with the unreliable ROM that my PDA2K came with because I have been unsuccessful at upgrading using my Mac and Virtual PC 7 (Windows XP).
I don't have access to a PC, and wondered whether anyone could give me any guidance.
Is it possible to upgrade the rom directly from the device itself, or are there ROM installers for other Blue Angel phones that would work via Virtual PC?
Any help very welcome - but please give as much detail as possible if telling me to install or change things manually. I've read posts about 'extended roms' and taking bits from here and there and I've no idea what this is about.
hello fellow mac user
What exactly is the problem?
ANy error messages? are you trying via BT or USB ?
HI,
When I tried to upgrade previously the PDA2K's screen showed USB but I got an error (sorry I cant remember the number code; radio upgrade error or something).
Recently, and I don't know what's changed, I just get Error 101: Connection Failure. When I try to run the upgrade the device does a soft reset at the beginning, then there is a long pause then I get the error. It seemed to manage more previously (may be that was an earlier from upgrade, but it never worked anyway!).
Have you been successful from your Mac?
Just looked back at my old posts on the howard forums, and discovered it was Error 114 I was getting previously (with the first ROM upgrade). I presume I'm getting the 101 connection error now that I'm trying to use the latest ROM upgrade.
One thing I'm about to try myself is to switch off both the windows and Mac OS X firewalls just in case they are interfering with the process.
Just to be more specific:
It comes up with the info from the phone and the upgrade, then I click next to start the upgrade; the device does a soft reset then repeatedly the device says it's connecting to host, the PC says reading info from device; then after a while I get error 101. As soon as the ROM upgrade installer quits, then Activesync reconnects the device (as guest).
Are the ERK files supposed to be run from the device? Will this help me? I've just downloaded one, and downloaded a thing called WinRAR but the resulting files say they aren't Win32 applications; and most of the contents of the folder are .rar files even after I extracted it. Wierd. Please can someone help!
Oh well, it's getting late here in the UK, I will just have to try again another time. Going to have to reinstall everything again now (as I have after every failed attempted at a ROM upgrade over the past few months). This is the last time I buy anything with a Microsoft operating system!!!!
Can anyone help?
Anyone?
Hi
Sorry but I don't think I am going to be much help.
I too am a Mac user with VPC and happily ActiveSync every day using VPC 7.01.
HOWEVER I would never try and use VPC to do something as basic as a ROM upgrade.
I managed to borrow a PC from someone at work and used that for the upgrade. I went on the basis that a ROM upgrade is so basic to the device and would likely need real PC hardware that I would not risk it.
Is there no colleagure, friend or workmate that can help you out?
Regards.
Robin
Hi,
Thanks for replying. I had bought Virtual PC because I just couldn't find any other way of getting a lot of the software onto the iMate. Having made this investment I hoped it would work with the ROM upgrade too.
I did manage to get use of a PC yesterday, but unfortunately it didn't work either. The PDA2K reset itself at the start, then after a delay the updater gave error 101 connection error, exactly the same as with Virtual PC.
Later, I managed to get someone really helpful at i-mate on the live support (and for once it didn't time out) and I went through a few things, including pressing power-reset-record (so that USB is displpayed) and trying from there. It still didn't work, I got Error 114 after the updater sat at 0% for several minutes.
This leads me to the exact reason I didn't want to have to rely on someone elses PC: having access to it for a limited time I tried repeatedly the ROM upgrade yesterday with no success. Later, at home, I got help from iMate and some ideas that will be trying again with a PC, but now I've got to wait for another opportunity to use a PC. What concerns me, is if I ever get a major problem the phone may be unusable until I next get access to a PC. Worse still - if the phone locks up when I'm using the PC and I don't have the time/knowledge to resolve it, I could end up with a non-functioning phone. It's much easier to tinker with these things in the comfort of my own home when time is less of an issue.
I just received my K700i yesterday. I decided enough was enough. I'm going to sell the PDA2K as soon as I've got the ROM sorted out. I really did try to get on with this device but it's caused me more grief than I have ever had with an electronic device before. I learned a lot, setting up GPRS, wifi, bluetooth, found all sorts of useful software, used VNC to control my Mac remotely etc etc, but at the end of the day I just couldn't rely on it. Some days I could get email, some days I couldn't. Some days people would receive the SMS I sent, some days they didn't. Sometimes the people I was calling could hear me, sometimes they couldn't. Sometimes the phone would stay switched off, sometimes it turned itself on and drained the battery. The list of problems I had with this phone were endless. Hence why I was trying to get the ROM upgraded.
I understand your concenr and problem.
I actually have the latest ROM installed on mine and I STILL get someof the problems you describe.
Only Microsoft could get away with writing such a crap operating system to run a phone.
And i-mates issues just compund the Windows issues.
Good luck.
Robin
ive never bothered even trying to run activesync thru vpc. It was a bit hit and miss on my XDA1 so as soon as my xda2i arrived i just bought missing sync from mark space. Hassle free syncing and installing, plus the ppc gets mounted like a mass storage device too.
Trouble is I use Outlook at work and need to sync it to my PDA.
I cannot even use Entourage as we are a) running to old a version of Outlook server and b) Missing Sync will not sync with Entourage.
I am stuffed both ways.
Robin
Me again!
Just thought I'd let everyone know that I did indeed succeed first time on a PC today (having pressed power-reset-record to go into bootloader mode first).
So, as everyone told me, it was necessary to use a PC, and Virtual PC on a Mac just wont work.
I'm getting on ok with my K700i, although the email seems a bit limiting (doesn't seem to have message titles displayed, and a short limit to the length of the email).
My plan: use the K700i for a few weeks and see how I get on, then perhaps I might try the newly upgraded PDA2K for a few weeks, and see which I prefer.
The other complicating factor is that the SIM free Treo 650 has just become available, but I'm going to hold fire on that for now. Perhaps if I'm not happy with either the K700i or the upgraded PDA2K then I might consider it...
Alright so I was trying to update the rom on my phone to no avail, always the damn program (custom ruu.exe) came up on the last screen displaying error 262 (update error) which is VERY common.
So I find in multiple forums of people recommending a certain update of the diamond phone series, I dont know why the f^*( I tried it, halfway in the update the phone went dark, and now wont turn on AT ALL.
I try the soft reset, battery out for a while, reinstall active sync, try in different pc's (win7 64bit, xp 32bit) no hope so far.... Well the ONLY sign of life is when I plug the phone via usb cable to either PC there is a hardware detected under "Qualcomm CDMA technologies MSM"
I believe its some sort of diagnostic mode to access the phone, but I cannot find drivers ANYWHERE! Please folks help me out is this thing done? is there hope?
PS i tried to update the drive on the Qualcomm device to wince usb (HTC USB SYNC) and it will install, however since IM NOT ABLE to go in the bootloader what else can i try?
i cannot access the bootloader & phone would not turn on.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but sounds like your only hope lies in using jtag (which is not easy or cheap, could try a warrenty exchange.)

You could also put it in a microwave, or hook it up to a car battery, say it fried it self, then get a new on warranty
so you guys are telling me theres 100% nothing i can do?
not even with the qualcomm usb situation?

so you flash a diamond gsm rom on cdma rhodium your device is one expensife brick its not easy to unbrick it best you can do is say you charge it all night and found not working in the morning send it in for repair and hope you get new one
a good advice read read read before even trying it always be shore
threads like this should get pinned for eternity.
hah i was thinking something like that, except that i just noticed battery low before sleeping, seemed drained in morning, wont turn on now, tried a friends battery and same problem.
PS: the main reason this happened and propably similar threads, is because there are notices to UPDATE YOUR TP2 with a DIAMOND UNLOCKER which misleads us novice users! its a shame for this to happen to such an expensive phone, and i wont usually do what ill attempt, but cant repay this company $600 for a simple fix for them.

Hi
My beloved HTC HD7 on O2 (Unlocked now) advises me that their is an update.
I imagine this is the pre-update to the No-Do update
However everytime i try to install i get to stage 6 and then the error 801812C is reported.
I have searched this and found the same answer in every article regarding-
"During Step 6 (Rebooting your phone), your Windows OS detects your phone as a new device and starts searching for driver updates online. This can be seen when you click on the little indicator with a spinning green circle in the bottom-right corner of your desktop called the notification area (you might need to click on Show Hidden Icons if it's hidden)."
"You have to *immediately* click on "Skip Obtaining Device Software Online" or Zune will time-out and show error 801812C1"
However i see no option come up on XP to allow me to stop such device updates. And i definatly have no hidden icons!
Someone please help with a better solution...
Jayne (Yes i am a girl so be nice, so sartactic answers please, I am Tech savvy but this one eludes me)
From what you post, it sounds as if maybe you have to right-click the notification icon in the system tray for that option.
From what i understand from the OP's first post, she doesn't have the icon so can't right-click it.
I know it's not really a solution, but have you tried updating on a Windows 7 machine? I've always thought that windows 7 is more compatible with WP7. I know this isn't excplicitly mentioned anywhere, but why else would the Dev Tools only be available in Win7? strange....
Windows 7
Many thanks
Yes indeed no notification is showing and I have set the taskbar not to hide inactive icons so nothing can be lurking!
I will see if i can find someone with Windows 7 as i'm a XP user through and through lol
Many thanks for the ideas so far but if anyone has another brain wave please contribute, I don't want to miss out on the proper upgrade when it arrives..this week fingers crossed eh!
same error here
Hi Jayneh,
I too have an HD7 on o2 (Sim unlocked, but stock otherwise).
I am also an XP sp3 user, and I'm getting the same error as you, 801812c1.
The update fails at step six. The phone will reboot and then show a picture on the screen suggesting I connect my phone to the pc, despite the fact it is connected already. I've tried three times with no joy so far.
I've done some searching and as you say, the current theory is that after rebooting the phone, the pc doesn't recognise it as WP7, but Wm, and proceeds to hunt for the right drivers. This will of course fail, and the update times out.
Several users on different model of phone have reported the error and Microsoft are advising you hold off updating until the issue is investigated.
A number of users are saying they are using Windows 7, so it can't be an Xp specific problem.
Several fixes have been reported by some users which include unplugging and re connecting the phone quickly, or stopping the pc hunting for non existing drivers by clicking the update icon in the notification area. This does not seem to work for everyone.
I have tried unplugging which didn't work for me. I looked for the update icon but can't see one, but in anycase, my machine runs incredibly slowly during the whole process so doing anything at all is frustrating.
One thing I haven't seen anyone reporting is whether they use the same machine to sync a WM6.1/6.5 device or not. I do, but I'm just grasping at straws here.
I'm also slightly worried as I only have a little over 10GB left on the laptop.
Here's hoping NoDo isn't a NoGo for us.
Garrickus
Many thanks Garrickus, as long as i'm not alone with this and it is being looked at, hopefully if all else fails the fab developers on here will soon have us an update rom we can port straight to our HD7's. Fingers crossed and hope the sucking up to the developers speeds this along
One solution to the 801812C1 error code
jayneh & Garrickus,
Do you have windows automatic updates turned off?
I had automatic updates turned off (XP Home 2002) and I had the same problem when I first tried updating.
After reading something elsewhere, I turned automatic updates back on and tried updating again 24 hours later. It worked, with the update running smoothly through all 9 steps without a hitch.
I don't know if you have to wait after turning automatic updates on, I just thought it would be prudent.
I'm also using an HTC HD7 on the o2 network. I hope this information helps you like it helped me.
Ian.
Automatic updates
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your feedback regarding automatic updates.
Unfortunately, I have automatic updates turned on, and PC and Zune are fully up to date, so that's not an option for me.
Interestingly, Zune had a minor update after a couple of failed phone updates and now when the little bubble pops up it describes my device as 'Zune' not 'Windows Mobile', but still getting same error code and updates fails exactly the same.
I see their is no specific response to this error code from Microsoft as yet
Are you still experiencing problems Jayneh ?
Garrickus.
Update
I was still having problems and my PC was/is up to date and automatic updates is on.
I say was because i now have the NoDo update having followed the brilliant update method by Petbede for updating without a gold card.
It went smoothly and here i am with a speedy phone and cut and paste. My god bejewelled loads so much quicker
frustration
Im using Vista, have the same problem as Garrickus. HD7 on Vodafone network. After reboot the device pops up as Zune device and computer tries to look for Zune drivers, after some time it gives up. I have tried all ways of updating drivers, nothin works.
Hi everyone,
I experienced that problem today downgrading my HD7 with Zune installed on XP SP3, three times it didn't work...then i closed all running app like firefox & other utilities...and the downgrade process worked at least...
My advice : just be patient!
Update WP7 driver on PC before running the WP7 upgrade
The error '801812C1' appears when the phone is wrongly identified as a 'Zune' device (MS MP3 reader !) after the phone restarts at step 6 of the WP7 March 2011 upgrade.
In order to set the correct WP7 device on the PC:
1. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button)
2. Restart the phone and press & hold the camera button
3. A black screen appears on the phone showing a device connected to a PC
4. Connect the phone to PC on USB port
5. Open Device Manager on PC and check the entry for Portable Device: 'Schubert' (= HD7) or other name (depends on your phone).
6. Shut down the phone (press & hold the power button) and restart it.
7. Connect the phone to PC and run the WP7 upgrade from Zune.
The error '801812C' no longer occurs at step 6.

Hello again.
Windows Phone Developer Registration tool doesn't "see" my device. I've double checked all requisites (.net framework, IpOverUsbSvc, phone listed in file explorer, screen unlocked, correct time, internet connected, etc.) The only issue I can think of is the fact that I still haven't set up a Microsoft account in the phone; but... is this reason enough for the WPDR tool to not even see the phone?
Any hint appreciated. Thanks!
That's probably the cause, yeah. You could try setting up the account to see if it works, then...
Well, I've found something interesting: when I've plugged my device to a virtual machine running win8 and the full WP8 SDK, it recognized my phone instantly. So, now we know that a device that has not been set up with a Microsoft account can be dev-unlocked.
So, definitely there's something wrong with my installation of the hacked SDK-lite. Or maybe the drivers. I have a kind of mess in my laptop because of all the previous drivers and programs for Symbian and my Nokia C7. I still find it hard to get used to the idea that Nokia is not Nokia anymore, but Windows. I have to repeat to myself twice a day: "I don't own a Nokia Lumia, but a Microsoft Lumia".
Thanks for caring, GDTD.

Well maybe the virtual Win 8 OS with WP8 SDK recognized your phone because Win 8 has the winusb drivers build in. On Windows 7, you need to install these winusb driver (you normally have a unrecognized device called Windows Phone 8 in the Device Management).
Link to the drivers : http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=winusb http://catalog.update.microsoft.com...updateid=90462af8-f533-4522-9ad1-dcc969d94832
Hmm... Well, this is strange. My device seems to be perfectly recognized by the system. Actually, every time I plug the phone in I get a popup window listing it under "devices and printers" with the correct model (RM-892 | Nokia Lumia 925). In the device manager it appears as a Nokia USB device, with no exclamation marks nor any sign of "wrong driver". Yet, the hacked SDK insists in not finding it.
On the other hand, I've tried to install the "winusb" driver you mention, but the link you provide redirects me to somewhere where there is no such driver, and I haven't been able to find a download. In any case, there are at least five copies of winusb.sys in my system...
Don't know what am I doing wrong.

You need to visit the website with Internet Explorer. Go to google type "winusb windows phone microsoft update catalog" and go to the site with "catalog.update.microsoft.com" in the URL. If you don't see the download link of the driver type "winusb windows phone" in search. There should be an unrecognized device called "Windows Phone 8" in the device manager (start menu -> My Computer -> right mouse click -> Manage -> Device Manager in left context menu) for this driver to be installed, if not I can't help you further.
Thanks Bruce. I've done what you said and was able to download winusb. It's a .rar package containing two files, winusbcompat.cat and winusbcompat.inf. Now, if I'm not abusing your patience... what do I do with them?
[EDIT] Ok, don't bother. I figured out how. Actually this solved my problem. After properly installing the winusb driver, the WP8 SDK lite by Arnold Vink recognized my phone.
Thanks to everybody who helped me "out".
Now I wonder how could I mark this thread as "solved"...
Hi,
My Nokia Lumia 925 won't respond to anything (NSU, NSU->”My phone does not startup or respond”, Nokia Care Suite->recover phone, volume down + power button,…).
Already leave it charging for several hours. Can’t have any reply from the phone.
Now the phone is kind of dead. Can start it and the only thing I see Is a QHSUSB_DLOAD (Nokia Emergency Connectivity) in PC.
I have tried many things according to internet but i can't get any success windows device recovery tool is also not detecting my phone and it is not listed in it. i have tried thor command also not working it says invalid hex file.
Please help me to recover my phone from QHSUSB_DLOAD mode.
I have a couple Lumia Phones on Win8.1 and I want to update to Win10, but obviously I cannot connect to the store. I cant believe I didnt know about the Windows Store shutting down before now!
The really bad news is my Lumia925 does not have a File Explorer app so I dont know how to install anything on this. I've tried downloading various .xap and .appx files, is there no way of updating this phone?
so I was following the guides posted for setting up Windows Phone Internals to unlock the bootloader and mass storage, I thought I had done everything correctly as I found the FFU for my phone, I flashed it once and then selected unlock bootloader, but now my phone is softlocked with a blank screen that just says Nokia. I cant shut it off and this model Lumia 925 doesnt have anyway to remove the battery. hopefully I can recharge/reset it after the battery dies
I thought the 925 was like all the other Lumias but it doesnt even have an SD slot sigh! I guess this wasnt the right Lumia for me to buy lol at least I still have my Lumia 1520 working just fine, but I wish I didnt just throw away $50 on this thing
I was hoping to have a smaller sized WP (as backup to my 1520) but the only other model I want is the Lumia 950 and for that price I could buy a full windows tablet/winbook with keyboard lol... is the 950 worth it? or should I just wait a couple years for small notebooks to decrease in price
update: my battery finally died and when plugging in the charger the phone came back... now to see if i can figure out what went wrong :good:
Press and hold together [Volume down] and [On/Off] keys. This will reset your phone as a battery pull.
You can try a method call "offline update Win 10 mobile" to up Wp10 for your Lumia 925 in this XDA forum, it don't need to unlock bootloader. I can't get link to you in this post, sorry !
