I'm thinking about getting a Moto X. I usually get a top-tier phone, but this one has really caught my eye.
I want a high-end device, but the "best" phones are all rather large. When I started looking at all the different "mini" versions, it turns out most of those phones are about the same as the Moto X. Nobody is really packaging their best phone with a smaller display; all the minis are pretty much 1.7GHz dual core units with 720-line displays. Compared to most of those the Moto X really fits my hand, and I like a lot of the features.
One thing I'm curious about is the operating temperature. My last three phones have all gotten pretty hot from time to time, but I read in a review that the Moto X draws a bit less current, and as a result it also runs a good bit cooler than some faster phones. This phone does seem to get a lot of life for a 2200mah battery.
Has anybody noticed any heat from this phone, or that it's particularly cool compared to other phones you've had? FWIW, I'd be using the Verizon version with 32GB.
Thanks in advance.
It gets warm when in my truck with GPS on, charging, and listening to podcasts... but no where near as warm as my Nexus.

Both 4 and 5.
No where near as the galaxy s4. The galaxy s4 gets so hot it burns lol.
MOTO X Slapped
I must say the Moto X is the of the coolest higher end phone I've used. There is absolutely no issue with heat on mine, even with a few hours of video running.
Both Samsung and LG phones can quite hot for me. Naturally any phone will get hot with prolonged GPS use.
i mean it gets warm, but thats it. i wouldnt call it hot compared to my Gnex, which would literally be on the verge of burning my face off. only time my X gets warm is if im using it while its charging. other than that, no problems at all

I guess it all depends on what you mean by top tier. If by top tier you mean a phone that works great as a phone, feels good in your hand, has a nice screen for its size, no lag and stock android plus, with the plus being very useful extras like touchless controls, motorola assist and active display, then the Moto X is top-tier. If by top-tier you mean has the best specs on paper but has lag due to its ridiculous OEM skin, drops calls and can't hold a 4G LTE signal well in weak signal areas, then by all means get the top-tier GNote3. I had it and returned it and got 2 Moto X's instead.

Never gets hot even when I WiFi tether my computer to it. My GNex used to get boiling hot when I did that.

What do you mean by faster? The CPU clock speed? Because I tested it side-by-side with the GNote3 and the Moto X beat the GNote3 in every data speed test I ran and opened apps and loaded web pages noticeably faster than the GNote3.
I don't think so. My note3 consistently pulls faster data TMob vs TMob on speed test.

I am on Verizon. The Moto X and the GNote3 and even my GNex all do well in strong signal areas. Where the signal is weak, the Moto X outperforms them all.

Hmmm... Probably. Didn't get to test x at work on day off. I switched to T-Mobile. My note has been pulling faster on TMob vs x on atnt. Note is still pulling down faster at apartment. At work, that will probably be true, x pulling down faster on a weaker signal. My refill runs out today on my note and might be awhile before I get to test again.

I'm too facing that issue. but that doesn't impact the usage or performance of x. even many of the youtube users checked that it is heating up little but not as xperia z2

This morning i woke up and my x was at 125° or 52c not sure if I have an issue or not but it seems like the general opinion is that it runs cool.

To me it seems that the front and back of my TMo Developer Edition is too hot. Just got an app to meaure the temp and its 39C without any serious load (facebook or just web browsing).
Anyone else has measurements to compare?
My dev edition gets hot with Maps navigation such that Maps just dies. If I charge it when using navigation, Maps dies quickly. Else it lasts for a while longer before dying. My note 3 and note 4 can go on and on with navigation even being charged at the same time.
That's nothing to worry about. If it actually overheats, it will shut down before damage is done. ?
Hello guys,
I've been reading a lot of threads about some issues regarding the new Moto G in this forum and in Motorola's forum.
These issues generally are:
Touch screen not responsive
Scrolling not responsive
Notification sound with delay in sleep mode
Music playing through earphones stutters when in sleep mode
Aggressive app closing due to RAM issues
I know that it is more common to find threads about complaints and issues than threads about good experiences and approval.
So I would like to know: did you get the new Moto G and had any of these issues?
Edit: I would like to add that I did not follow the launch of the old Moto G, so I don't know if there were similar issues before and they were patched afterwards.
Thanks for the feedback!
I had a Nexus 4 and I must say the New Moto G is a massive upgrade in terms of battery. As for the screen, it is a little less sharp, but nothing noticeable unless compared side to side. I find the responsiveness is the same, maybe a little less responsive, still, nothing noticeable. Scrolling is fine.
I have noticed however when streaming songs from SoundCloud / HTML5 grooveshark, there is a weird stutter. Music starts, stops for 2 or so seconds and back again. However once I pause for around 3 seconds it plays flawlessly.
I have not noticed a notification sound display in sleep mode, however, though maybe because my phone's on silent mostly .
As to the app closing I have noticed, compared to the N4, that it shuts down more apps. The N4 had 2GB ram anyways.. I would suggest using MinFree apps(Play Store, requires root) if the closing of background apps bothers you.
In conclusion, this phone would be a definite upgrade from a 2/3 year old smartphone. Fast, no lag, and a few minor problems. Totally in love with this phone
TL;DR: Buy it, for the price it is most definitely worth it, without a doubt.

I see you have the same story as I have!
I owned the N4 for 10 months and never dropped it. The first time it fell off my pocket the screen was shattered and the touch screen stopped working.
The replacement is over US$150,00 where I live in, and it's a generic LCD/digitizer that probably is less responsive and the colors/contrast are worse than the original one.
But thanks for your feedback!

Since you have had the Moto G 2014 for a while now, would you still recommend the Moto G over buying a refurbished Nexus 4? Thank you in advance. I'm trying to make up my mind between the 2. I can get a Nexus 4 factory refurbished for $149 from Expansys.

Yes, and then- maybe no. It depends on what sort of user you are.. For me, when I had the Nexus 4, battery was the main concern. In terms of such, the New Moto G is much better. I was sceptical about the 5" screen but I've got so used to it now that I prefer it tenfold over the N4. Now about the ram, once again, if you're a power user go for the N4. Almost Identical specs yes, but the 1GB ram in my opinion makes a difference. I use Razer comms for VoIP when I game(on PC or android) and when I play games on android + Razer, due to low ram Razer stops.. There's a slight lag here and there, almost non existent but sometimes you may come home to an empty-home screen, and find yourself waiting for a few seconds before they appear again. The Camera/Speakers are a MAJOR upgrade, on par to the N5. If you're an avid after market ROM flasher, the Nexus 4 definitely, but I guess the New Moto G will catch up soon.
TL;DR I definitely say go for the New Moto G, rather than a 2 year old Nexus 4. Also, guaranteed Android 5.0!
PS. OTG too!

On that I can't give a detailed reply, since I hardly use maps but while playing around with it/ using it once or twice I didn't notice any difference. With the G2 battery, you'll be able to navigate even longer
I just placed my order for a Used-like new Moto G 2nd gen from amazon warehouse. Thanks for the input.

I can tell you mine is flawless, I have it set to use Device Only meaning it only uses GPS/GLONASS lock on is fast and accurate every time.
I don't have any touch screen issues as others have described however I do have the notifications delay, music occasionally stuttering and even though the device does have aggressive RAM management (it starts closing apps when you have 300MB of free RAM left) I keep a very lean device and don't multitask much so it doesn't really affect me, my tablet only has 1GB of RAM the same and even when using that intensively it doesn't close apps the same way as the phone does.
@jay2the1, I wonder if the notification delay will be fixed either with an update or a custom rom? I hope mine doesn't have any touchscreen issues.

Motorola is currently investigating it I suspect they can fix it with an update but we need to wait until they investigate further, there is no notification delay while the phone is charging or when you are playing music and it only affects 'data' notifications like WhatsApp and email, that's why I think they can fix it as it seems to be something being too aggressive when the device is sleeping.
I would like to buy this phone for my dad. My dad has 2 SIM cards (private and work) so this dual sim phone could be useful to him, but I am a bit worried after reading about the Memory management problem when the phone shuts down apps by itself.
Should I avoid this phone?
Well i'm a moto G 2014 user since the first day and i don't have any problems with memory.
i'm pretty sure that's a good phone for your father i recommend it.
have a nice Christmas.
Small apps like facebook and the browser are great for multitasking too. But for example games the moto g kinda struggles like every other smartphone. Even the galaxy s5 doesn't have a great multitasking system. I own this phone for 3 weeks now and i didn't see any apps force closing while i was heavily multitasking. So for the price and the quality definitly not avoid this phone And also the battery is great! And if you are interested in software. The european model wich i have does still has 4.4.4 kitkat wich is a great operating system. I hope they will update the planned lollipop for EU models asap.
I have the XT1063 (single SIM Global model). I've owned it for about two months and have been very happy. I upgraded to Lollipop last week and I could not be more pleased. I haven't ever seen any issues with memory but I don't use my phone for heavy gaming as many do. I do play Hay Day on it when I am away from home, but for the most part it is a phone and that is how I use it, for phone calls and texting.
I think most of the complaints about it tie into the fact that people expect it to perform like a high end tablet and are disappointed when it doesn't. But as pointed out above, it is the same no matter what model phone you have. I have friends and relatives who own the iPhone 6 Pus and they complain about that as well.
I can't speak for the dual SIM version but for my part, bottom line, I don't think you can find a better phone for the price, period.
Well, my dad is definitely not a power user. He doesnt use Facebook or playing demanding games on the phone. I know some ppl dont have this memory problem but from what I read it does exist so I assume its not with every single model.

It's actually not even a problem with the phone, and it isn't present in android kitkat... it is a well known bug on devices that are running 5.0 and 5.0.1
only some users are suffering this issue but it is being worked on so i wouldn't even have that as a reason not to buy the phone. I've had the 1st and now the 2nd gen moto G and it is better than any mobile phone I've ever had. even beating my iPhone! GO FOR IT!!!
I´ve got the dual-sim version XT1068 for europe too and I can only follow my preposters,it´s a great phone, everything performs as it should. I don´t have memory issues,no problem for instance in using chrome while listening to music, opening Gmail etc. The only thing I realized is when taking a photo my musicapp (poweramp) stops. The dual-sim function is clever and easy to use. I´m still on Kitkat and the phone works fluid and fast, there´s no big difference between the so called flagships and the Moto G. Lollipop is still to come and I don´t think it will make anything worse.
You can´t get a better phone for the price imho.

Haven't been on this forum in years! Just bought the moto x4 Android One phone after my iphone randomly broke.
1) Why is the moto x4 screenshot editor different than the one here? I am updated to android 9 january 2019.

2) Will these headphones work completely? with my current generic headphones, the volume buttons don't work but worked with the iphone. (they are not specifically for the iphone, just generic)

3) how do you guys deal with the general laggyness of the phone? It was a cheap phone that I had to buy but with its specs I don't understand why its laggy.
I will tell you in a few days when I get mine.

I'm enjoying my new X4 and yes, it's lagging sometimes, but it's not a problem for me. It depends on what you're running.
