ooh, how I hate Miui 8, 9, whatever... - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Is it me, or does Xiaomi's Miui interface really bite (like @PPLe's) !
I have had the mi mix for over 18months, and just changed to the Mi mix 2 (because of the larger available lte bands, the drop in price for the 2, and because I got tired of repairing my mi mix screen).
I never understood Xiaomi's need to make an interface / desktop layout so similar to the Apple's own inferior interface. I hate having the hundreds of apps installed on the phone, filling up screen space and you swipe back and forth trying to find the app. Horrible!
I am stuck on this setup, for the next 72 hours (boot loader locked). Boy I can't wait to switch over to true Android roms.
Cheers

Apart from theme store where's the advertisements?
Bloatware can be uninstalled with locked bootloader with ADB, or disabled via settings.

I have mi mix 2 ,and i have installed a lot of roms whith no problem,i sink the problem its you not the phone
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I have the Mi Mix 2 and while I don't like MIUI, there is no denying the stuff is fully optimized. I get better Battery life than I do with the third party roms available. It is also faster. I have simply instaled Nova Launcher and substratum via root and deal with the few differences in appearances, like the notification shade. But that aside the phone looks pretty close to an asop rom. Just install a third party laucher and root your phone. You can then install an app like Root Essentials and delete unnecessary bloat/apps. You can install their themes or substratum or a combination of the two.

I tried LOS on my Mi Mix 2 because I missed stock Android--but the phone just works much better on MIUI. It's much snappier and smoother, the call quality is better and the cell reception is more stable. I hate the MIUI stock launcher with no app drawer but a custom launcher fixes that problem. I hide the icons for the MIUI programs I never intend to use and as long as they don't affect the performance of the phone I don't care about them being installed.
The Mi Mix 2 running stock MIUI is easily the fastest and most responsive phone I have owned since the Pixel XL--and it doesn't have that phone's overheating issues.
I went from the Pixel XL to a One Plus 5 to an Essential PH-1 to the Mi Mix 2.
Oxygen on the One Plus phones is way worse than MIUI. It looks much closer to stock Android than MIUI but the actual coding in Oxygen is completely amateur hour. Their version of Oreo is filled with Nougat code that shouldn't be there and lots of other coding that ignores basic Android standards. Third party apps constantly break on Oxygen because of all the non-standard coding. I also probably had to do more factory resets in 8 months of using Oxygen on the One Plus 5 than I've done on every other phone I have ever owned combined.
MIUI gets a bad rap in a lot of circles but it's so fluid and stable I can live with the fact that it isn't stock Android. Before the Pixel XL I owned Nexus phones so this is coming from someone with a longtime preference for stock Android.

I guess I will invest in Nova Launcher App... it really makes the interface and organizing leaps and bounds better than Miui... I am waiting for my boot loader to be unlocked and I will root my phone and give miui with Nova Launcher a chance... add my favorite Adaway, and remove bloatware from Xiaomi (I must say, they bloat much less than Carrier specific unlockable hardware supplied phones)...

I'm running mine with FastKey launcher and using Block-This ad blocker. I hate the miui launcher too. But my Mix2 doesn't have any ads anyway and I'm on the Chinese rom. So it's strange that you would be complaining about ads that no one else seems to have. It's also strange that you wouldn't know about being able to change your launcher. That's an android staple.

I like the clean set up... using a customized Oreo Rom... and using pico gapps...
I don't like the sense of taking my opinion of miui, and referring to me as a newbie, because it doesn't agree with yours...
Most Customized Roms have there own flavour of launcher which is WAY superior to any Apple or Miui Interface Launcher. Unless of course you like the Apple IOS, then you will obviously love miui (apple clone interface). I must have gotten used to not having ads with my other roms on my mi mix and past 5 android phones...
Of course this is all possible with a unlocked Boot loader (which i am waiting for).
And, there is boatloads of ads... ever use an app from the google play store (most have advertising content in the description for a reason). Adaway does the best job at suppressing those ads typically embedded whenever your using an app, or scrolling down pages of content (news, weather, social media content etc...).

I guess you didn't read what I wrote. I said I dislike the miui launcher and don't use it. I also said I use Block-This ad blocker. I also use Opera which has a built-in ad blocker. But your original post said miui had too many ads which is not the case. You never referred to Google Play apps.
I'm not knocking your opinion at all. I just find it strange that you're not familiar with the ability to change launchers in android.

I have and am able to change launchers, but when the launcher is integrated I find it much more feature packed, and allows for other changes that a launcher cannot do as an after thought app.
To me, ads, are ads (to me anyways), whether they appear using twitter, or on Flipboard, and even if they are integrated as part of a paid on non paid app from the google play store (weather apps are notorious for that).
Anyhoot... 18 more hours and then I get to start from scratch with so many of the other rom builds, and bye bye apple, er, I mean miui.

You made it sound like MIUI was filled with ads. If you are downloading add supported apps from the Play Store that isn't a fault with the phone or its operating system. You might like LOS better than MIUI but I found it too buggy to use as the daily driver on my primary phone. I also found LOS too buggy to use as a daily driver on 3 other phones--but I wasn't a fan of Cyanogenmod either for pretty much the exact same reason. Hopefully you'll find something to run that makes you happy.

I was a big fan of ViperOS for my Mi Mix. I tried them all, LOS, RR, etc, but my go to was ViperOS. It was no longer supported (and after a while, I was fine with that), but it was solid, smooth, fast and bug free. It's launcher was sweet, and the fine tuning had everything you could ever ask in tweak-ability (for FREE, in that you did not need to download an aftermarket launcher).
I never stated that only miui was filled with ads. I stated that typically locked down bootloaders from just about most manufacturers cannot be rooted. Yes, the Mi Mix 2 can be unlocked and rooted. Yes, you can "surgically" remove bloatware. I guess the fact that you can start with just the rom, and add your own gapps makes it just more tuneable.
Cheers,
LormaD

That was the problem with Viper on the OP5. They continue to support the OP3/3T but dropped support for the OP5 after the 5T came out. If you are determined to root the MiMix 2 at least it's easy to do. Phones that ship with Oreo have dual partitions. The rooting process with those phones is way more difficult and they also tend to be easy to hard brick if something goes wrong.

just curious, what MIUI roms are you guys on anyway? (official global? eu?)

Currently Global Developer. It's a bit more up to date than Global Stable and is very stable anyway. The only app that doesn't work is Android Pay (but I'm not rooted). The Play Store also shows up as uncertified in the dev build but I haven't encountered any issues relating to that.
The Chinese ROM was updated more recently than the Global version (I think) but I have no interest in trying that one.
Eu isn't an official MIUI ROM. It's a custom ROM that's probably intended primarily for devices where there is only an official Chinese MIUI and not a global build.

Thanks for the clarification! Actually I'm on a xiaomi.eu ROM at the moment. I'll try the Global Dev ROM. If I flash official global dev through TWRP, will it lock my bootloader again? I remember on my other xiaomi device (Redmi 3 pro) before it locked my boot and replaced twrp. :/

How is the state of the OnePlus 3T right now?

Hello, I've been an Android user from a while and decided to upgrade from my Nexus 5 to the OnePlus 3T. The only thing I'm concerned is not having the Google Android version since I'm very fond of how good it is, but in October 31st, Nexus 5 will be 4 years older and although Google isn't still talking of stop working on the software side of it it is probably going to happen eventually.
With all that said, I'm trying to learn beforehand (my phone arrives in 10 days) if are there any lag problems, if people are using any specific ROMs that work better with it and anything that could be quality of life improvements that I could do once it arrives.
Thank you

The Nexus 5 is already discontinued when it comes to official software updates. It will only get security patches and even that won't be for long. (In fact it's latest factory image is from December 2016 so it might've fully stopped already.)
As for the Oneplus 3T, it's currently running the latest 7.1.1, latest security patch and the Oneplus skin (OxygenOS) is basically stock Android on steroids. I'm running the fully stock beta 4 version and the phone is extremely fast and smooth, battery is great. It's good to the point where I haven't even felt the need to unlock the bootloader and root yet. You definitely won't be disappointed in your purchase.
I recently (last week) replaced my 2 year old Nexus 6 with a OnePlus 3T and had the same concerns as you. Would I enjoy another OEM's version of Android? I was even running a really bare bones Vanilla AOSP ROM by the end and loved it.
I don't regret changing at all thus far.
I'm on OxygenOS 4.1.1 with Franco Kernel and Magisk v12 and it's working beautifully! I figured I'm gonna run OOS for a while before seeing if there's any nice ROMs available. I've been looking around a little, but not many of the available ROMs seems worth it (I don't want CM, Lineage or anything pre-rooted).

Ah, that's so good to hear! This is exactly what I was expecting. Yeah, Nexus 5 had an extremely good run and until the beginning of this year I felt it was still so good as far apps go, but anything web related started being more and more painful. It is still a pretty good phone and I'll keep around for Android dev related things.
Now I'm pumped for the 13th.
Thanks

OOS is as close as you can get (factory OS) to "pure" Android unless you buy a Nexus or Pixel (and the latter will of course cost you). Many are calling the OP3T a spiritual successor of the Nexus series.
There are just a few OnePlus versions of apps (music player, file manager, weather) that many folks will find useless (you probably have your preferred options). And a OnePlus launcher.
But beyond that, there are a few modifications many will see as value added: The OnePlus camera app is really nice (great options in Manual mode). There are lots of settings which let you tweak and customize in (my opinion) really useful ways.

I flash Franco Kernel because I have great experiences with it from my Nexus 6. Ran without for a few days, but realised I missed it...
I install Magisk because I want root and for a few nice systemless modifications. Currently: changing screen density, debloating system apps and Viper4Android.

I see. I never used a launcher (except the Google Now, not sure if that is even considered a launcher itself, and hopefully it is a feature in every Android phone, not just Google ones), ideally, I think I would want to get rid of that, if possible. The File Manager might be helpful, although I use one I like, perhaps theirs is a good one. No biggie, though.

Google Now is a launcher (AKA home app). It's not pre-installed, but you can easily install it from the Play Store.
I don't think you can disable or uninstall the OnePlus launcher on a stock OP3T ("disable" is grayed out), but you certainly can with root (may want to freeze it before uninstalling, and make sure it doesn't break anything else). But I also doubt it would make any significant difference, compared to simply installing Google Now launcher, and making it the default home app.

Haven't used it much, it does the basic functions (move/copy files, looks like it can open archives like ZIP) but doesn't look like anything special. If you use one that has more features (particularly root browsing) you'll probably prefer what you already use.

New (soon) owner of Mi Mix

Coming from mi 5s plus, I was looking for more screen space, so the mi mix 2 or 2s was a no go for me better the 6.4 of the mi mix 1.
Very excited, will read through the forum.
Anyone willing to sintetize what shall I do first, (other Rom, Google camera, magisk, etc...?)
In the past I always rooted phones, but I kind of prefer not to, unless there is a huge advantage in doing it (my last mi 5s plus I never rooted nor unlocked, and I was perfectly fine)

I'll stick with my original answer
I ran MIUI quite happily on my MIX for several months, then finally got fed up with the constant updates to the bloatware that's preinstalled and can't be disabled. If you are intent on sticking with MIUI at least try a custom launcher (e.g. Action launcher) and definitely update the stock camera app.

Oh yes I do have Nova Launcher.
Which camera app you recommend?
Ideally you want the google hdr+ camera; there's a port of it in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/miui-9-stable-magisk-xposed-t3705951 but I don't know if that's the one for you. Ask google!
Also I would recommend buying a clear gel case for your MIX; the case that comes with it is perfectly fine, but it hides the beauty within, and I think my clear case was all of about £1.40 from amazon.

What kind of software updates/support can we expect from Xiaomi?

Just got the Mi 8 after 7 years on iPhone.
At first, I felt like MIUI 9's UI was quite dated. Now, MIUI 10 is rocking Material Design that fits better with the rest of Android. Yay!
Having said that, I'm not yet sure what kind of software updates/maintenance to expect from both Google and Xiaomi...
So far, I notice that there are some inconsistencies and annoying bugs due to the MIUI layer. Lack of "Ok Google", One-handed mode tends to stop working, Text to speech is missing, the text editing is sometimes MIUI sometimes Android, etc etc etc... While there are nice things about MIUI as well for sure.
Ok...
Overall, I want to prepare myself for the kind of attention I'll pay to maintain this phone in the next year or two.
Thinking if I should install custom ROMs and how often I should spend the time to customize & fix little things.
Based on your experience with Xiaomi and Android in general, how much will the manufacturer take care of things for me so "it just works"?
Normally I would recommend you to buy a pixel phone, it's the best Android you can have if you use to have iPhone.
Prepare yourself to wait for updates and new features from Android.
The problem with others companies it's that next year you'll have mi9 and they will get there attention, so the updates Will be first to the new versions.
On Google pixel and iPhone that doesn't happen.
To my that's the problem with Xiaomi, Samsung, etc etc

I see... Seems like I'll have to live with these things related to Android in general.
I'm learning to enjoy using parts that work while training myself to ignore buggy stuff... As if they were never an option.
By focusing on features that work (no more and no less), it's far easier to enjoy this device.
But of course. Easier said than done. There's always temptation to feel FOMO for knowing that these basic things are supposed to actually work.

Welcome to the world of Xiaomi. Dated MIUI 9? HOW DARE YOU We have a wonderful theme store with tons of themes, something that cannot be said for other manufacturers that have added theme stores or theme apps (cough cough Asus). I'll give you a detailed summary of how things work.

A LARGE majority of Xiaomi smartphone users buy it for the chap price and expect it to work like every other Android smartphone; Android updates bring you features. That is totally fine, but many seem upset when their phone is still rocking an ancient version of Android as compared to other phones (both other brands and Xiaomi phones as well). For MIUI, this is not the case, and again, people still haven't realized this sadly. Xiaomi pushes features and improvements through MIUI versions, so for the most part, Android versions are irrelevant to us. Obviously some features from the Android version are important such as the upcoming support for notches and multiple cameras, but for the MIUI ecosystem, everything you need to for your experience comes in the form of MIUI updates. Focus on MIUI version updates first, unless there is something very important in an upcoming Android version.
FEATURES, IMPROVEMENTS, BUGS and YOU:
Your opinions DO matter, many of the features present on MIUI came from the voiced opinions of users like you and I. Second space, dual apps, themes, etc. Many of the are thanks to what we have made of it. This is the same for bugs. There is a feedback app within the phone which is in the Tools folder of most if not all official MIUI versions. Do provide screenshots and suggestions, they are listening, and I myself have seen bugs I have mentioned be fixed in later versions. Could have been me, could have been millions of people who noticed it as well. I think MIUI 7 was the most successful MIUI version out there in terms of overall stability, but I could be wrong
DEVICE QUALITY:
Obviously cheaper devices will demonstrate that they are cheap at some point. Most Xiaomi phones are solid companions, but the lower priced devices tend to suck at times. I owned the Redmi Note 2, and boy the battery life was dreadfull. Some other mid range devices of theirs have physical issues. I owned a Mi Max, it began to slightly bend like the iPhone 6 Plus. The Redmi Note 3 Pro had what seemed like paint on the antenna areas that was chipping off from just putting it in my pocket. The Mi A1 unfortunately had a major issue with the power button that many experienced, and after a drop in it's case, the screen began to lift slightly. This is not at all to scare you as things happen, and all of those phones were outstanding in terms of performance and battery life. Not to mention that all of these phones have been top notch perfomers (no, thats not a pun). Their flagships are pretty darn good for the price, same goes for quality in these. Another thing to note, flagships have better band support than the mid range or lower end (even if they have a Snapdragon processor). This is why I gave the Mi A1 up. I had LTE, but no data during calls, calls would not come though because of the lack of 3G or even 2G support for my carrier, no VoLTE and so on.
CUSTOM ROMS AND XIAOMI PHONES:
Not a good mix in my own experience, but there are some great roms. It's gotten better now that Xiaomi releases source codes even though it takes them a while, but usually the common issue is a lack of a variety of official roms, with many being buggy ports or so on. I hate LineageOS, but typically other roms use this as a base instead of being built from scratch. This is usually what I have come across Xiaomi phones, but who am I to talk, I love MIUI and have not touched a custom rom on Xiaomi phones since the...well A1 actually. MIUI is not for everyone however. There are some setbacks to some of their featues. The browser app for example is great, but auto playing videos gets very annoying, and it falls behind many other browsers out there (I use Chrome). Heavily modified manufacturer builds of Android such as MIUI usually runs better than custom roms though, so keep in mind that you may not get the 6 hour average of screen on time with heavy usage, or may experience more heat, etc.
THINGS YOU MENTIONED:
Now for some of the specific things you mentioned, MIUI always seemed to want to distance itself from Google, but it has gotten better over time. Look at the Mi A1 and A2 for example. I believe that these features just need better implementing. One thing I miss about stock Android is the newsfeed on the left side of home, like the iPhone. I don't understand why the MIUI launcher even had this section, it is useless as all it does is display things I could care less about, and I have to go to the Google app to access this newsfeed. Text to speech I believe now resides within the Google keyboard? Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Languages and Input > under Input Methods > Gboard > Preferences and enable Voice input key. Now you can tap the mic on the top right of the keyboard and talk to type. The text editing MIUI vs Google part has me confused. I believe it might depend on which app you use? If it's a Google app, it's a Google thing, if it's a MIUI app it's a MIUI thing maybe? If you could give some examples, I could investigate and see if there is a proper workaround.
BONUS:
A few secrets! VoLTE not working for you? Try changing your region to India or Hong Kong. Notifications not arriving on time or at all? This is a default battery saving featue, go to Settings > Battery & performance > under Battery Saver tap Choose apps and look for the app that's not receiving notifications (example Kik) and set to No restrictions. Missing your Facebook (or other app) chat heads? Go to Settings > Permissions > Other permissions and select the app in question. You will see Display pop-up window is disabled (red circle with an "X"), tap it and tap Accept. This is commonly referred to as drawing over other apps. I keep it off since it sometimes becomes a headache for changing other app's requested permissions on the fly. This is something that was added to Android after I believe Android 5.0 or so. It's a "security" feature, but if you just installed a new app lets say, have a Facebook chat head open, and that new app requests permission for contacts or so on, it may tell you to turn off the drawing app to change the permission, so I guess this explains why Xiaomi decided to keep it off by default.

It's actually the first time I've experienced a bug with any of Google's own apps. Frustrating since it's a new phone and I can't use it to it's full extent, but it'll fix itself eventually soon

Looking forward to the fix!
Google Assistant is a major selling point that got me to move from iOS (Siri) to Android.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

I hear you... It's just that I'd rather stick to stock Xiaomi themes as most themes come with hiccups. Could be a couple missing icons or generally hit & miss quality.
In any case, I'm delighted by where MIUI 10 is visually and where it's headed!

Great point! I'm embracing this now actually.
MIUI is far better than TouchWiz, EMUI, and whatnot.
It doesn't matter if the updates come from Google or Xiaomi. I just want enough vendor attention so my phone stays secure and generally updated.
If Xiaomi can offer its own flavor of upgrades, I don't really care about missing out on Google's. Especially since I didn't buy the phone from them.

I'm most inclined to keep it simple and just use the latest & greatest stable software from the manufacturer.
My hope is that Xiaomi will take care of me enough so I'd focus on using my phone over trying to do the job that I paid them to do.

I miss it too but I'm learning to accept that configuring this feature on my own is a hassle that I'd rather ignore.
I'd rather enjoy the Poco Launcher, which works well with the rest of MIUI. Without trying to make my phone mimic Google's ways.

Yes, the Google-style text selector appears mostly on Google-made apps and others like Evernote. Mysteriously, Google Search uses the MIUI style highlight buttons (the one with Select, Select All, Paste, etc)
Looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Question [poll] Which ROM do you prefer and why, on Mi 11 Ultra

One reason for choosing a ROM is obviously the region one lives in. But there are other possible reasons for going with a ROM from other regions or sources. I have tried almost all available ROMs (which I know of...) on my Mi 11 ultra which is originally CN version. I wanted to know which ROM is the most popular among the masses here...!
I use global, I have a global device and my provider (Vodafone UK) works best with this ROM, also I feel it is quite optimised

I agree. Global works fine for me also. The only thing that is bothering me on Global ROM (besides the regular dark mode bugs) is the fact that the Android security patch is still from the month of May as of now.
I prefer the EU ROM as it is updated as the Chinese is but it still keeps the mi dialler and SMS app. I couldn't get on with the Google versions. Also no call recorder on global. Well there are loads of differences, the EU has the best of all versions. Some people find it slower than stock but as I don't game with my phone, it's good for me. I had the 10 ultra too and used Chinese and then EU on that too.

I gave it a try. The issue for me in EU was the buggy animations. Compared to the official global (and CN), the opening and closing animations of apps on EU were inconsistent and jittery.
Have you tried global/CN on your Mi 11 ultra? If yes, how are the animations on EU as compared to the global/CN for you?
For the call recording on global, if you set the region of the phone to the US or some other regions (where call recording is legal I guess), the default google dialer has the call recording function. It is just info, I am not trying to compare google dialer to mi dialer.
The thing I don't understand is why people want so much this call recording function, why you need to record your calls? Lol

EU rom is a laggy disaster. I don't know why thought. Animation is laggy for suuure. Development don't want to even listen about it. I guess they using some old crap inside somewhere. (Old optimization that shouldn't be there)
CN rom is a if you know what to do with it. (I located in states and using tmobile)
I am almost curious to try the china rom on my global device, I think once put the language in English and debloated properly should be the best ROM. I don't know how people can be happy to use Xiaomi EU as it is laggy as ****, it is unacceptable to buy a device worth more than 1 grand and having performance of a poco phone lol, if you speak to the developers they do not address the problem, it doesn't even seem you are using a custom ROM lol, custom ROM used to be developed for performance and battery life and this is not the case

I have tried it as it was the original ROM with which my phone shipped. It was the best (in terms of updates and smoothness). Problem with it was I did not find any option to restore from google drive when initially setting up the device (understandable as the ROM does not contain Gapps by default) and also there was no option to restore from google drive after installing google play from getapps. Is there a way to restore from previous backup from google drive on CN?

I have used both. CN felt smoother than global and the last I checked, 12.5.10 CN included the June Android security patch. CN has mi dialer and mi messages which are nice apps. It also has a global searchbar on homescreen (akin to the Sesame app but nicer as it is natively supported). But there, you cannot set google or any other search engine which would provide results in English. All you have there are three search engines that are in Chinese. You cannot set the "ok google" command, cannot restore from google drive, and cannot have google feed on the left swipe in the default launcher. Also, the Chinese language is not eliminated entirely like the global, even if you set the phone language to English or the phone region to any other region using the more locale 2 app. For example, the theme store will always display results in Chinese, no matter what. Occasionally, you may get prompts in Chinese where it is not clear what the phone says obviously if you don't know Chinese. The dark mode bugs which are present on global are also present on CN.

In my experience, global is more usable for me. It has all goodies I prefer to have such as smooth performance and google services especially the backup and restore functionality. But it is not perfect. It has many bugs like other available ROMs (especially and ironically, the dark mode is buggy across all different ROMs) and the updates are slower too. I can forget about the addition of new features but lack of up-to-date security patches is not forgiveable for a flagship device.

After knowing that the latest weekly beta of Xiaomi.eu ROM included the August security patch and after the majority of folks here favoured this ROM, I decided to give Xiaomi.eu ROM another try. I installed the beta and ironically, there are no major bugs and even the animations are smoother than the stable Xiaomi.eu ROM I used before (12.5.2). So far liking it. The beta has some major feature updates besides the August security's patch such as the fully functional camera preview on the rear display (now the rear display can be used for portraits and videos etc.) I think it will not be justified if I use their ROM and do not give them their due credit here. So posting here to the older poll I started.

Question Will we see Custom ROMs for this phone?

I was looking for a custom ROM (first Xiaomi phone,I hate MIUI, it sucks) while keeping the Camera featiures. but I realized there isn;t any out yet.
The 12 Pro has been out for 8+ months, and there still isn't any actual ROMs for it.
I wonder if we will see anything (Lineage for example) anytime soon.
Do you think the lack of ROMs is because devs are focused on other phones, or that the 12 Pro is just unpopular?

If you don't like Miui, you had to buy a Pixel.
The 12 pro is not unpopular but expensive, it's more practical to have the phone to develop.
Wait and see.
MIUI indeed but better than stock.

I actually had a Pixel 6 that had issues (still loved it though), and wanted to replace it with something I hadn't tried before.
The 12 Pro is a great phone, I just have my gripes with MIUI now that it's been a couple months, but it is by no means bad, it's just personally not my favourite UI.
I will absolutely wait and see, this post is by no means complaining or begging, simply wondering if this is normal as I have never owned a Xiaomi device before!

I understand but as said above the phone is relatively expensive and recent, you have to wait.
Yet the A12 source code is already there.https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource/tree/zeus-s-oss
To familiarize yourself with a Xiaomi you can try a Xiaomi EU rom, same than stock but with a lot of improvements and options and especially the call recorder.

I love using MIUI, it has all the features built-in, I am using it from MIUI 9, and MIUI is one of the first to implement gesture navigation,
I have also used other Android skins like One UI, Color OS, Oxygen OS & Stock android, out of all those Oxygen OS older versions and stock android are good other than MIUI,
One UI is full of features but it causes lag I have Samsung Galaxy S7 tab which lags quite a bit
If u want to remove unused system apps just use tools like Xiaomi adb fastboot tool by szaki you can easily find it on google and it is easy to use too just enable USB Debugging and select which apps u want to remove this tool even has an option to reinstall removed apps
If possible try using Xiaomi EU ROM it is a polished version of stock MIUI ROM

I am using the EU Rom as I am in the EU (even reflashed it after trying the A13 Beta).
The things I don't like about MIUI are mostly, well, about the UI:
- The Settings are absolutely nonsensical compared to any other phone I have ever used, specific features are all switched around, when most other UIs are kinda similar in their arrangement and sorting of settings
- MIUI looks super boring and has ads in their apps (that you have to manually disable)
- Some settings literally stop working if you uninstall specific apps (cannot change Lock Screen wallpaper through settings without the Xiaomi Gallery app, some battery settings and other settings dissapear if you uninstall Xiaomi Security)...
- You completely lose one of the main features of Android 12: the theming with the wallpaper, widgets, icons, etc... all lf those are removed in MIUI.
- Split-Screen SUCKS. You cannot resize the Youtube app, as it doesn't scale the window correctly and you lose the video, instead of doing it like every other UIs ny letting you only show the video; it doesn't scale the launcher so you lose access to your dock/bottom part of your screen, etc...
I feel like MIUI has removed a lot of what makes Android 12 appealing, and it will do the same with Android 13, which is why I want a more Stock A12/13 ROM, while keeping the Camera features (which you just need the app for).
Unfortunately, it doesn't matter whatsoever that Xiaomi has good Gesture Navigation, because I CANNOT use it.
I WANT to, but you HAVE to use the default launcher to use them. Changing the default launcher warns you that Gesture Navigation is only available with the stock launcher.
I need a different launcher so I can use my Icon Packs I paid for and have been using for years, as well as all the customization they give (rename apps, custom icons per app, hide apps in app drawer, etc.).
I have never had any of those issues with my previous phones (minus A12, since it is newer), and while the 12 Pro is still a great phone, it has so many issues.
I will wait for the ROMs patiently, but nothing will make me love MIUI unless they fix all of thoses issues I described above.
Still running stock MIUI (Android 11) fully debloated, native call recording (stock Indonesia ROM has it by default and works great outside of Indonesia), device is fully read/write-able thanks to my SystemRW/SuperRW feat. MakeRW script (link in my signature) which opens the door for endless customizations according to your personal preferences and I couldn't be any happier. As you can see you don't need to install a 3rd party ROM to be happy
And if my banking app is too intrusive I will simply uninstall it and do my money transactions with my browser app which never checks for root or if my selinux is permissive. I mean why would the browser app check such a thing? That's none of its business!

What you say absolutely does not correspond with the XIAOMI EU roms which have no ads, you may be talking about EEA stock roms for Europe (disabling the ads in the setup).

How sad! A10 + A11 are the best versions!
You can try to compile A11 from source for your device if you like a challenge
That's okay though. You can make RW A12 too and debloat the hell out of it and customize it until you are happy with the results
A13 that's a different story altogether... I'll update my script to make it work with A13 but it's not as easy as with A10 or A11

I too regret A11 for the AOSP which have become ugly with less customization and washed out colors.

I have the EEA Stock rom. I have disabled ads in setup, but I still got ads in the Security app and Themes, mostly because I reinstalled them after uninstalling them (I wish I didn't have to use them).
