Question Will we see Custom ROMs for this phone? - Xiaomi 12 Pro

I was looking for a custom ROM (first Xiaomi phone,I hate MIUI, it sucks) while keeping the Camera featiures. but I realized there isn;t any out yet.
The 12 Pro has been out for 8+ months, and there still isn't any actual ROMs for it.
I wonder if we will see anything (Lineage for example) anytime soon.
Do you think the lack of ROMs is because devs are focused on other phones, or that the 12 Pro is just unpopular?

If you don't like Miui, you had to buy a Pixel.
The 12 pro is not unpopular but expensive, it's more practical to have the phone to develop.
Wait and see.
MIUI indeed but better than stock.

I actually had a Pixel 6 that had issues (still loved it though), and wanted to replace it with something I hadn't tried before.
The 12 Pro is a great phone, I just have my gripes with MIUI now that it's been a couple months, but it is by no means bad, it's just personally not my favourite UI.
I will absolutely wait and see, this post is by no means complaining or begging, simply wondering if this is normal as I have never owned a Xiaomi device before!

I understand but as said above the phone is relatively expensive and recent, you have to wait.
Yet the A12 source code is already there.https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource/tree/zeus-s-oss
To familiarize yourself with a Xiaomi you can try a Xiaomi EU rom, same than stock but with a lot of improvements and options and especially the call recorder.

>Well Xiaomi 12 pro has a relatively smaller userbase and so there aren't many developers here, see even xda thread related to our device is very much deserted only a handful of people are here
*> why hate MIUI so much?
I love using MIUI, it has all the features built-in, I am using it from MIUI 9, and MIUI is one of the first to implement gesture navigation,
I have also used other Android skins like One UI, Color OS, Oxygen OS & Stock android, out of all those Oxygen OS older versions and stock android are good other than MIUI,
One UI is full of features but it causes lag I have Samsung Galaxy S7 tab which lags quite a bit
If u want to remove unused system apps just use tools like Xiaomi adb fastboot tool by szaki you can easily find it on google and it is easy to use too just enable USB Debugging and select which apps u want to remove this tool even has an option to reinstall removed apps
If possible try using Xiaomi EU ROM it is a polished version of stock MIUI ROM

I installed lots of AOSP roms on my previous phones in A10, A11, for example the BLISS roms in A12 have become ugly and coarse, no finesse (quick access), a lot of customization options have disappeared, which was the charm of these roms.
Wait and see.

I am using the EU Rom as I am in the EU (even reflashed it after trying the A13 Beta).
The things I don't like about MIUI are mostly, well, about the UI:
- The Settings are absolutely nonsensical compared to any other phone I have ever used, specific features are all switched around, when most other UIs are kinda similar in their arrangement and sorting of settings
- MIUI looks super boring and has ads in their apps (that you have to manually disable)
- Some settings literally stop working if you uninstall specific apps (cannot change Lock Screen wallpaper through settings without the Xiaomi Gallery app, some battery settings and other settings dissapear if you uninstall Xiaomi Security)...
- You completely lose one of the main features of Android 12: the theming with the wallpaper, widgets, icons, etc... all lf those are removed in MIUI.
- Split-Screen SUCKS. You cannot resize the Youtube app, as it doesn't scale the window correctly and you lose the video, instead of doing it like every other UIs ny letting you only show the video; it doesn't scale the launcher so you lose access to your dock/bottom part of your screen, etc...
I feel like MIUI has removed a lot of what makes Android 12 appealing, and it will do the same with Android 13, which is why I want a more Stock A12/13 ROM, while keeping the Camera features (which you just need the app for).
Unfortunately, it doesn't matter whatsoever that Xiaomi has good Gesture Navigation, because I CANNOT use it.
I WANT to, but you HAVE to use the default launcher to use them. Changing the default launcher warns you that Gesture Navigation is only available with the stock launcher.
I need a different launcher so I can use my Icon Packs I paid for and have been using for years, as well as all the customization they give (rename apps, custom icons per app, hide apps in app drawer, etc.).
I have never had any of those issues with my previous phones (minus A12, since it is newer), and while the 12 Pro is still a great phone, it has so many issues.
I will wait for the ROMs patiently, but nothing will make me love MIUI unless they fix all of thoses issues I described above.

Still running stock MIUI (Android 11) fully debloated, native call recording (stock Indonesia ROM has it by default and works great outside of Indonesia), device is fully read/write-able thanks to my SystemRW/SuperRW feat. MakeRW script (link in my signature) which opens the door for endless customizations according to your personal preferences and I couldn't be any happier. As you can see you don't need to install a 3rd party ROM to be happy
And if my banking app is too intrusive I will simply uninstall it and do my money transactions with my browser app which never checks for root or if my selinux is permissive. I mean why would the browser app check such a thing? That's none of its business!

What you say absolutely does not correspond with the XIAOMI EU roms which have no ads, you may be talking about EEA stock roms for Europe (disabling the ads in the setup).

How sad! A10 + A11 are the best versions!
You can try to compile A11 from source for your device if you like a challenge
That's okay though. You can make RW A12 too and debloat the hell out of it and customize it until you are happy with the results
A13 that's a different story altogether... I'll update my script to make it work with A13 but it's not as easy as with A10 or A11

I have the EEA Stock rom. I have disabled ads in setup, but I still got ads in the Security app and Themes, mostly because I reinstalled them after uninstalling them (I wish I didn't have to use them).

ooh, how I hate Miui 8, 9, whatever...

Is it me, or does Xiaomi's Miui interface really bite (like @PPLe's) !
I have had the mi mix for over 18months, and just changed to the Mi mix 2 (because of the larger available lte bands, the drop in price for the 2, and because I got tired of repairing my mi mix screen).
I never understood Xiaomi's need to make an interface / desktop layout so similar to the Apple's own inferior interface. I hate having the hundreds of apps installed on the phone, filling up screen space and you swipe back and forth trying to find the app. Horrible!
I am stuck on this setup, for the next 72 hours (boot loader locked). Boy I can't wait to switch over to true Android roms.
Cheers

I have mi mix 2 ,and i have installed a lot of roms whith no problem,i sink the problem its you not the phone
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have the Mi Mix 2 and while I don't like MIUI, there is no denying the stuff is fully optimized. I get better Battery life than I do with the third party roms available. It is also faster. I have simply instaled Nova Launcher and substratum via root and deal with the few differences in appearances, like the notification shade. But that aside the phone looks pretty close to an asop rom. Just install a third party laucher and root your phone. You can then install an app like Root Essentials and delete unnecessary bloat/apps. You can install their themes or substratum or a combination of the two.
I tried LOS on my Mi Mix 2 because I missed stock Android--but the phone just works much better on MIUI. It's much snappier and smoother, the call quality is better and the cell reception is more stable. I hate the MIUI stock launcher with no app drawer but a custom launcher fixes that problem. I hide the icons for the MIUI programs I never intend to use and as long as they don't affect the performance of the phone I don't care about them being installed.
The Mi Mix 2 running stock MIUI is easily the fastest and most responsive phone I have owned since the Pixel XL--and it doesn't have that phone's overheating issues.
I went from the Pixel XL to a One Plus 5 to an Essential PH-1 to the Mi Mix 2.
Oxygen on the One Plus phones is way worse than MIUI. It looks much closer to stock Android than MIUI but the actual coding in Oxygen is completely amateur hour. Their version of Oreo is filled with Nougat code that shouldn't be there and lots of other coding that ignores basic Android standards. Third party apps constantly break on Oxygen because of all the non-standard coding. I also probably had to do more factory resets in 8 months of using Oxygen on the One Plus 5 than I've done on every other phone I have ever owned combined.
MIUI gets a bad rap in a lot of circles but it's so fluid and stable I can live with the fact that it isn't stock Android. Before the Pixel XL I owned Nexus phones so this is coming from someone with a longtime preference for stock Android.
I guess I will invest in Nova Launcher App... it really makes the interface and organizing leaps and bounds better than Miui... I am waiting for my boot loader to be unlocked and I will root my phone and give miui with Nova Launcher a chance... add my favorite Adaway, and remove bloatware from Xiaomi (I must say, they bloat much less than Carrier specific unlockable hardware supplied phones)...

I'm running mine with FastKey launcher and using Block-This ad blocker. I hate the miui launcher too. But my Mix2 doesn't have any ads anyway and I'm on the Chinese rom. So it's strange that you would be complaining about ads that no one else seems to have. It's also strange that you wouldn't know about being able to change your launcher. That's an android staple.

I like the clean set up... using a customized Oreo Rom... and using pico gapps...
I don't like the sense of taking my opinion of miui, and referring to me as a newbie, because it doesn't agree with yours...
Most Customized Roms have there own flavour of launcher which is WAY superior to any Apple or Miui Interface Launcher. Unless of course you like the Apple IOS, then you will obviously love miui (apple clone interface). I must have gotten used to not having ads with my other roms on my mi mix and past 5 android phones...
Of course this is all possible with a unlocked Boot loader (which i am waiting for).
And, there is boatloads of ads... ever use an app from the google play store (most have advertising content in the description for a reason). Adaway does the best job at suppressing those ads typically embedded whenever your using an app, or scrolling down pages of content (news, weather, social media content etc...).

I have and am able to change launchers, but when the launcher is integrated I find it much more feature packed, and allows for other changes that a launcher cannot do as an after thought app.
To me, ads, are ads (to me anyways), whether they appear using twitter, or on Flipboard, and even if they are integrated as part of a paid on non paid app from the google play store (weather apps are notorious for that).
Anyhoot... 18 more hours and then I get to start from scratch with so many of the other rom builds, and bye bye apple, er, I mean miui.

You made it sound like MIUI was filled with ads. If you are downloading add supported apps from the Play Store that isn't a fault with the phone or its operating system. You might like LOS better than MIUI but I found it too buggy to use as the daily driver on my primary phone. I also found LOS too buggy to use as a daily driver on 3 other phones--but I wasn't a fan of Cyanogenmod either for pretty much the exact same reason. Hopefully you'll find something to run that makes you happy.
I was a big fan of ViperOS for my Mi Mix. I tried them all, LOS, RR, etc, but my go to was ViperOS. It was no longer supported (and after a while, I was fine with that), but it was solid, smooth, fast and bug free. It's launcher was sweet, and the fine tuning had everything you could ever ask in tweak-ability (for FREE, in that you did not need to download an aftermarket launcher).
I never stated that only miui was filled with ads. I stated that typically locked down bootloaders from just about most manufacturers cannot be rooted. Yes, the Mi Mix 2 can be unlocked and rooted. Yes, you can "surgically" remove bloatware. I guess the fact that you can start with just the rom, and add your own gapps makes it just more tuneable.
Cheers,
LormaD

That was the problem with Viper on the OP5. They continue to support the OP3/3T but dropped support for the OP5 after the 5T came out. If you are determined to root the MiMix 2 at least it's easy to do. Phones that ship with Oreo have dual partitions. The rooting process with those phones is way more difficult and they also tend to be easy to hard brick if something goes wrong.
just curious, what MIUI roms are you guys on anyway? (official global? eu?)

Currently Global Developer. It's a bit more up to date than Global Stable and is very stable anyway. The only app that doesn't work is Android Pay (but I'm not rooted). The Play Store also shows up as uncertified in the dev build but I haven't encountered any issues relating to that.
The Chinese ROM was updated more recently than the Global version (I think) but I have no interest in trying that one.
Eu isn't an official MIUI ROM. It's a custom ROM that's probably intended primarily for devices where there is only an official Chinese MIUI and not a global build.

Thanks for the clarification! Actually I'm on a xiaomi.eu ROM at the moment. I'll try the Global Dev ROM. If I flash official global dev through TWRP, will it lock my bootloader again? I remember on my other xiaomi device (Redmi 3 pro) before it locked my boot and replaced twrp. :/

Question Change my mind: I bought a Xiaomi Mi 11 but I dislike MIUI

Hi all. I recently bought my first Xiaomi phone taking advantage of a launch offer on Amazon Italy (phone + Xiaomi Mi Smartwatch for 650 euros instead of 830 euros).
I was happy to have a device with a Snapdragon 888 processor, a super camera and an excellent 120 Hz screen but it took a few hours of use to realize that the biggest flaw of this device is the operating system.
I have been using Google or OnePlus phones for years, currently I also have a OnePlus 8 and I must say that the switch from OxygenOS to MIUI was devastating.
Handling background apps and notifications is awful. Often the notifications are not grouped or are identified correctly (those of Telegram are associated with a contact even if they are from another), in the background applications I find the same application several times. Using a "Pixel Experience" theme didn't improve that.
I prefer a device that is more like stock Android than a badly made iPhone.

I dislike MIUI as you. Nevertheless i use Xiaomi phones since 4 years. I use the developer rom (weekly) from Xiaomi.eu in combination with nova launcher. I like the multiple options (extras) of the rom based of latest android, the removed ads and bloadware and their grandiose community/ forums for the rom and the phones.

Wellcome to the club
You are on the righ place.
Here you can learn how to customize the hell out of your device. I also use "Nova" launcher and that makes experience so much better for the start. And I apply "viral" custom icon theme pack across all of the apps.
In time developers will start releasing custom roms here that are maybe for your needs and likes. So just be patient and you will fall in love in Xiaomi and the device. No need to return it, it a good device that will just become better in the near future with upcoming updates. There is a 12.5 update coming sometime in April which will have much improvement in many segments.
Weird. After buying why this question?

Ciao compa'
Coming from a Pixel 4XL and yes: devastating.
Using Nova Launcher or installing Xiaomi.eu will solve none of the problems that you are having. Actually Xiaomi.eu, even if based on 12.5, may make experience worts since you'll get Xiaomi apps for browser, dialer, contacts etc. Although Xiaomi.eu does not have the notification problems that you, me and everyone else with a EU Android 11 ROM is having, also on Mi10T phones.
If you contact me via pm I can try to provide some hints to ease the pain...

Question [poll] Which ROM do you prefer and why, on Mi 11 Ultra

One reason for choosing a ROM is obviously the region one lives in. But there are other possible reasons for going with a ROM from other regions or sources. I have tried almost all available ROMs (which I know of...) on my Mi 11 ultra which is originally CN version. I wanted to know which ROM is the most popular among the masses here...!
I use global, I have a global device and my provider (Vodafone UK) works best with this ROM, also I feel it is quite optimised

I agree. Global works fine for me also. The only thing that is bothering me on Global ROM (besides the regular dark mode bugs) is the fact that the Android security patch is still from the month of May as of now.
I prefer the EU ROM as it is updated as the Chinese is but it still keeps the mi dialler and SMS app. I couldn't get on with the Google versions. Also no call recorder on global. Well there are loads of differences, the EU has the best of all versions. Some people find it slower than stock but as I don't game with my phone, it's good for me. I had the 10 ultra too and used Chinese and then EU on that too.

I gave it a try. The issue for me in EU was the buggy animations. Compared to the official global (and CN), the opening and closing animations of apps on EU were inconsistent and jittery.
Have you tried global/CN on your Mi 11 ultra? If yes, how are the animations on EU as compared to the global/CN for you?
For the call recording on global, if you set the region of the phone to the US or some other regions (where call recording is legal I guess), the default google dialer has the call recording function. It is just info, I am not trying to compare google dialer to mi dialer.
The thing I don't understand is why people want so much this call recording function, why you need to record your calls? Lol

EU rom is a laggy disaster. I don't know why thought. Animation is laggy for suuure. Development don't want to even listen about it. I guess they using some old crap inside somewhere. (Old optimization that shouldn't be there)
CN rom is a if you know what to do with it. (I located in states and using tmobile)
I am almost curious to try the china rom on my global device, I think once put the language in English and debloated properly should be the best ROM. I don't know how people can be happy to use Xiaomi EU as it is laggy as ****, it is unacceptable to buy a device worth more than 1 grand and having performance of a poco phone lol, if you speak to the developers they do not address the problem, it doesn't even seem you are using a custom ROM lol, custom ROM used to be developed for performance and battery life and this is not the case

I have tried it as it was the original ROM with which my phone shipped. It was the best (in terms of updates and smoothness). Problem with it was I did not find any option to restore from google drive when initially setting up the device (understandable as the ROM does not contain Gapps by default) and also there was no option to restore from google drive after installing google play from getapps. Is there a way to restore from previous backup from google drive on CN?

I have used both. CN felt smoother than global and the last I checked, 12.5.10 CN included the June Android security patch. CN has mi dialer and mi messages which are nice apps. It also has a global searchbar on homescreen (akin to the Sesame app but nicer as it is natively supported). But there, you cannot set google or any other search engine which would provide results in English. All you have there are three search engines that are in Chinese. You cannot set the "ok google" command, cannot restore from google drive, and cannot have google feed on the left swipe in the default launcher. Also, the Chinese language is not eliminated entirely like the global, even if you set the phone language to English or the phone region to any other region using the more locale 2 app. For example, the theme store will always display results in Chinese, no matter what. Occasionally, you may get prompts in Chinese where it is not clear what the phone says obviously if you don't know Chinese. The dark mode bugs which are present on global are also present on CN.

In my experience, global is more usable for me. It has all goodies I prefer to have such as smooth performance and google services especially the backup and restore functionality. But it is not perfect. It has many bugs like other available ROMs (especially and ironically, the dark mode is buggy across all different ROMs) and the updates are slower too. I can forget about the addition of new features but lack of up-to-date security patches is not forgiveable for a flagship device.

After knowing that the latest weekly beta of Xiaomi.eu ROM included the August security patch and after the majority of folks here favoured this ROM, I decided to give Xiaomi.eu ROM another try. I installed the beta and ironically, there are no major bugs and even the animations are smoother than the stable Xiaomi.eu ROM I used before (12.5.2). So far liking it. The beta has some major feature updates besides the August security's patch such as the fully functional camera preview on the rear display (now the rear display can be used for portraits and videos etc.) I think it will not be justified if I use their ROM and do not give them their due credit here. So posting here to the older poll I started.

Question any 3rd rom have a plan for this device?

I've sent an email to Xiaomi to ask when the Global release will be. I purchased the Note 12 Pro here as a 'Global' version but it ended up being some modified Chinese ROM with a factory unlocked bootloader so I couldn't even use GAPPS and a bunch of other apps (super annoying). So now it's just sitting in the cupboard until a Global or other ROM is release for the phone...

I purchased the same phone but opted for the basic CN rom and the box was sent sealed. I'm currently waiting for the bootloader to be allowed to be unlocked (official way 168hrs) and have left it unused after setting it up.
Google services/apps CAN be added/allowed anyway on the CN rom under accounts (you'll see it there, enable it), then install the latest google play apk and any other apps you want. I have the phone at 99% how I like it and may keep it as is because gpay works. You can also use ADBAppControl to remove bloatware and if you bang a launcher on (I'm using Nova) you'll not notice. If you're gonna flash it anyway you might as well try the above and see if it is good enough for you. At least you can play with your new toy

My bootloader is now unlocked and I'm hoping that xiaomi.eu will make a rom for it. It can stay in it's box till they do, or we get a global rom. Can't be long really.

I managed to get GAPPS on it, but still can't use WearOS which is a pain.. Other than that, I have Google Pay, Play Store, etc on it. I'll give ADBAppControl a go. The Chinese apps are a bit annoying with all the notifications (even after disabling notifications...)

Been using both my Redmi Note 9 Pro and this Note 12 Pro. The 12 is much, much smoother but I'm not super impressed with the camera though. The Samsung camera looks way better.

I found a video online comparing the samsung cam against the sony and couldn't see that mugh difference and gcam seems 'ok' on it. I can't use gpay cos the nfc isn't active, I'm not sure if I can use the nfc on my pixel watch to pass the info back to the phone via BT for purchases. Might try that when/if a proper global rom is out. The india rom is fine for 99% of it all for me.
I bought the Chinese version. I hated the limitations and crap not working correctly with the Chinese rom, so I flashed the Indian (Global) rom the day it was available and it's great!
I'm definitely waiting for a xiaomi.eu rom though as there's still some things missing. Gamepad support and Google Pay are 2 that I can think of right now.
I live in Canada.
Someone has asked over on xiaomi.eu, and as the phones processor isn't snapdragon, support might not be looked into. Just have to wait and see I guess.

Themes / Apps / Mods (Mod) Pixelify - make your device more like a Pixel

Hi all,
Have been looking for things to make this phone a little less OnePlus, found this little gem, some / a lot of you may know all about Pixelify.
Pixels are slick and fast, so tried Pixelify and I'm pleased to say that it worked perfectly.
The launcher, recents, dialer, photos, live wallpapers.
It all works.
Grab version 2.2 and run through the magisk installer after choosing the module via magisk.
I went through all the options by agreeing to each one, the device now feels a lot quicker, a lot smoother and hasn't looked better.
It's not my work but I can confirm it works on android 13.1 currently on 521.
If you can't change live wallpaper then use this app.
Live Wallpaper Picker - Apps on Google Play
Easier to launch and preview live wallpapers on your device.

If recommend grabbing pixel mods to tweak it further.

On 9 pro you've got plethora custom roms that looks like pixel
BTW. i've also decided to grab a used 9 pro (in mint condition), to have some fun. This device has always had sentimental value to me (i've owned all the color variants, sold it and bought back etc). It has its flaws obviously (eg camera software) but it's last true OnePlus. 10 Pro is really solid device, takes better pics but it's imho no longer a Oneplus

I feel like that about the 8 pro, i never had the 9, plus the 8 had that monochrom camera, decent little party trick..
Not sure what the 10's party trick is? Tricking us into buying it probably.
I may look into the 9 as well, if the price is right.
@forever_lol where would you be getting one from? They appear to all be about £300
I'd be better grabbing a new nothing phone or pixel or even an 8 pro. Plus the battery on the 10 pro even after a year has gone a bit poor...starting to lose 5-10 overnight... So the 9 would be suffering, the 8 would be gasping by now
Maybe I can get lucky
Yeah I paid sth like that. I got it from a private person on ebay-like site.
I had "luck" as my model was used 5 months only
Nothing 2, pixel 8 pro are options worth to consider...just this samsungish cpu tensor worries me a bit.

Well the new one is 3rd Gen ( 2nd really) so should be pretty good. If they can keep the heat down and stretch that battery then it'd do a job, Snapdragon has some good things happening but nothing 2 won't see them, it's already announced as having 8 gen 1+ so marginally faster than the 10 pro.
I was eyeing the Moto 40 ultra, does look amazing tbh... Think the camera suffers from poor software though.
I'm looking at theming for the 10 pro, what can we use to theme system UI + Settings.
I've read substratum is risky on both counts and recovery may fail afterwards is: rescue zip.
Coupled with pixelfy I reckon we can get the aesthetics of a ROM albeit skin deep on the 10 pro.
@dladz I'd also like to take the opportunity and thank for all your contribution here. Your efforts to make 10 Pro a more interesting device are really keeping this forum alive. Cheers mate.

Thanks man, it's been my pleasure.
I appreciate you saying that.
Tbh with you, all of you guys have kept the forum a nice place to be, I've no idea what it's like on the other devices like the pixel as I've never had one.
PS: don't like giving up on things, as much as I like to moan, I can still see potential here, as soon as the first ROM drops I'd have hoped that it'll snowball, just need to get that first one over the line.
It is really interesting, how the whole system is now sped up. But it is great.

Lol right butter smooth... I use no limits xXx as well as this... Install xXx first then pixelfy.
System is running ridiculously smooth, have to say I love the live wallpapers, got the rocks one on mine.
Mhm then I have to use xxx no limits too. Can I flash them over pixelify?
Edit: OH wait, xxx no limits is a ROM, isn't it? Or is it even something like magisk module for OP10P, too?

It's more like a magisk ROM, @LowaEastSide flashed it then put me onto it.
You get options via a config file which you can edit in a text editor within android prior to flashing then pop the config file into a folder in root of SD called xXx then flash the module, I'm not sure what it does in its entirety but it does help with fluidity and some other bits like the Google launcher, GMS doze..
I got it from the 8 pro forum, make sure it's the latest one.
Not 100% if you can flash it after pixelfy but I'd assume you can...maybe remove pixelfy first then install that then pixelfy

Well, it seems I don't want to flash it for sure if we don't know what does it do in its entirety. But you can tell me, if you find out something. I might flash it then, too.

Used to use that on my 7 Pro. Nice to see it still somewhat works on this phone. Might have to give it a try.
As for the topic, Pixelfy 2.2 works great almost overall. The live wallpapers keep crashing on me though, can't seem to set those. Everything else though from what I can see works fine though with some short testing, and yeah, due to the SeLinux enforcements, the phone is definitely a bit snappier.

Perhaps try xXx first then pixelfy, the live wallpapers are all good here...rocks and Pokémon.
I'd like to theme OOS, settings etc, any ideas?
And with that, I just spotted Pavlova UI works on 13..
Skeptical to try it
