Wanted to give a shoutout to the desktop mode. I connected my USB-C dock to the phone and very impressed with how seamless it is. Experience is truly like a desktop
* PD pass through charging is working.
* Hooked up a BT mouse and BT keyboard.
* Sound volume is high from phone!
* Websites automatically seem to open in desktop mode when using chrome in EMUI desktop mode, which is very well thought out.
* Phone automatically found my canon wireless printer in the network and prints. Didn't have to futz with drivers or printer setup etc.
* Clicking on relevant links automatically opens the app on the phone that corresponds. i.e., Amazon, Youtube, etc..
Samsung has it all wrong with needing a special dock etc. Huawei has done this right.

I'd love to try this. Can you share which USB-C dock you are using? I've read that some may advertise PD pass-through but the phone doesn't actually charge when connected. Thanks!

I use this one
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-in-1-A...var=512141576624&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
works a charm and does charge through too.
I use this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insign...-power-delivery-white/5577934.p?skuId=5577934
It does charge via PD. However, I notice that the phone discharges every so slightly even while receiving a charge. That could be because I have it powering a big 23" HD monitor and also using a BT mouse (microsoft arc mouse) and BT keyboard (microsoft surface keyboard). In an hour of usage, the phone seems to drop 2-3% charge, which is not a big deal.
I need to figure out how to adjust the mouse scroll wheel sensitivity on the phone. On the PC you can do it via the native control panel, but not sure yet how to adjust that on the phone.
Overall, this is the least talked about feature about the P20P. Can't beleive none of the reviewers tout this as a game changer because it is. Just plugging a USB C and having full desktop mode is truly awesome. There were entire products that claimed to allow this (superbook) functionality on kickstarter. And Samsung made a big deal about DEX too.
Here's a photo.

Does it actually charge your P20 Pro while you're connected to a monitor (thru HDMI)? My understanding is that when a P20 Pro is connected to a monitor, the Pro won't charge thru USB hubs due to a Huawei limitation.

I agree; the Easy Projection desktop mode was one of the main reasons why I got this phone over Samsung's Dex.
I'm in the process of trying to see if I can move most of my work off my Dell laptop to the P20 Pro and/or the cloud. I can't figure out a way to get my P20 Pro to charge while being plugged into a USB dock (with HDMI to a monitor), but aside from that, this setup is interesting to experiment with so far.
I just ordered mine from Canada.. CLT-L04.. and I currently have an LG V20 which I use like a desktop at times. I always plug it in via HDMI and use my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It's a little tricky, the resolution is terrible on my 2K monitor so I go to my 1080p TV and plug it there then plug it to the same monitor and I receive 2K. My concern is that the 2K monitor may have issues with the P20 Pro's 1080p resolution. Is anybody plugging it in a 2K or even a 4K monitor?

Strange as yes when plugged in to TV and with the USB-C also plugged in I get the phone charging also, will double check tonight but I'm certain of that.
I bought a cheap, generic Tuwejia adapter from Amazon.. it has USB/HDMI/USB-C going to USB-C. I am very pleased with it, it does a great job!
My big Dell keyboard works well and the big trackball mouse is attached via the keyboard, not the adapter, and both work very well. The USB-C charges the phone very well. The HDMI part.. I do not believe it's the adapter's fault, it's my cheap 2K monitor. Okay.. here it goes..
I had another generic adapter similar in size and shape, but it was plastic. The phone never charged on that one. The Tuwejia feels solid and the cover is metal, aluminum? The phone charges very well on that one.
I am using a cheap QNIX monitor (QX2710) and it seems my phone's showing 640 x 480 (I can't tell but it's really bad) on my big 27" 2K monitor.
I had the same problem with my LG V20 so I would take it to the big 1080p TV in the living room and the phone would somehow "reset" itself to 1080p instead of lower resolution.
I tried it again with the P20 Pro and it displayed 1080p in the living room but when I brought it back to my office, it was still very low resolution. It doesn't seem the phone resets itself after being hooked up to a 1080p monitor.
Again, I don't think it's the adapter at all. It's the monitor, I'm almost sure of this.
EDITED TO ADD: I just went to Best Buy and got a Samsung 4K monitor.. I am happy to report it's now much better so it was the cheap monitor. I have the adapter and have been using it like a desktop for the past hour. It's still showing 100% charge. I have my USB keyboard and mouse attached. It's wonderful!
What is battery drain like with desktop mode if you don't use a charger too?
Based on my experience, it drained pretty fast because I had my USB keyboard attached. It really depends if you're using Bluetooth or not.
I ran into a small problem with Netflix and tried all kinds of things... the movie shows up on the big screen but the subtitles show on my phone. It didn't do that with my V20.

I can charge at around 2.7 A , that is more then enough to top up the battery while in desktop mode.
But you need a PD compliant charger and cable , that means the charger has to have a USB-C output port. The huawei charger and cable can't help here.
Two chargers that work for me are the :
- apple 61W USB-C Power adapter
-COOSA Type-C power adapter 72W, when using the PD USB-C output port.
I'm using a Belkin USB-C <-> USB-C cable , but i don't remember the exact type. It probably is prudent not to use cheap unbranded cables.
Also as you can see in the attached image the battery icon display two "separated" lightning images.
Which is different form the single (normal) or double (fast) lightning symbol.
I haven't found a working charger that uses a normal USB-A connector yet.
I am the OP - I have a USB-C dock and power is provided by a Dell XPS-13 USB-C charger (I used to use that dock for my dell laptop in the past nowadays I exclusively use the phone). It charges the phone fine while in desktop mode. Phone does discharge at the rate of about 1% per hour or so of dock use. It's minimal so I can easily live that that.
Liking Desktop mode also. Its funny how it works opposite of Samsung Dex when it comes to Office apps. with samsung DEX, google sheets is overly zoomed while Microsoft excel is great. For Huawei Desktop, Google sheets is great while microsoft office doesnt have a desktop version, but open like it would on the phone interface.
How are you guys getting Netflix to work? I have it installed on my phone but i cant find it on the list of apps on desktop mode

bk227865: Thanks so much; this actually answered my problem. Turns out all I needed was a PD-capable charger along with PD-capable hub. So I got one from the local BestBuy store today, plugged it into my current PD-capable HooToo USB-C hub, and voila...my Pro charges fine with it plugged into an HDMI monitor thru the hub.

I originally wrote this reply thinking that xxaarraa was talking about mouse pointer movement, but then realized I read it wrong when it was really about the "mouse scroll wheel". Oops, anyhoo...
For those that dislike the mouse pointer sensitivity, I haven't figured out any setting to change it. But I have an old mouse similar to this one that I decided to try with my Pro this evening: https://www.amazon.ca/JETech-2-4Ghz...=B00M48154Q&psc=1&refRID=HGWCSMDJP35T5CEYQZ47
At the lowest cpi/dpi speed setting on the mouse -- 800 -- it seems to require about half an inch more movement than my Logitech MX Anywhere 2 mouse in order to move the mouse pointer from one end of the Pro's desktop screen to the other end. Not a huge amount of improvement, but it seems to be the only option -- albeit a hardware one -- to change the mouse speed.
Before I splash my hard earned cash on a dock, is it possible to check out desktop mode another way? I've only had my P20 Pro for a few days and I'm still getting used to it. But so far it is far and away the best phone I've ever owned. Some companies are practically giving it away (Vodafone UK are offering it on its basic contract for £18 pm with £150 upfront with a further £10 off code and £35 cashback through quidco. I got mine on O2 with £49 upfront and £15 cashback on £23pm contract) and Huawei are throwing in a free set of free buds worth £149 atm as well. Anyone due an upgrade soon would be mad if they didn't take this phone.

If you have access to a USB-C to HDMI cable, then you could connect your Pro to the monitor and try out Desktop mode that way.

I bought a type c to HDMI cable, hoping it would work with my TV Unfortunately it didnt, anyone know another way round this or if elephone are going to get a set up for this as I'm really wanting to watch the phone 4g access through my TV (not casting) as I've no phone line so no wifi, or access to one!!!!!???
Screen mirroring or Miracast will be your only option. You can also set up a hotspot if your smart tv is Wifi compatible. Alot of new phones have no MHL compatibility.
You can use chromecast with localcast app for media on your phone or stream off 4g using chromecast compatible apps without mirroring. It works with personal hotspot but you need a second phone to do the initial chromecast setup.
You can use a DisplayLink USB graphics adaptor and the DisplayLink app from the Google app store. It works for me.
I also can use a Dell D3100 docking station, for HDMI output, and keyboard _ mouse input.

Currently the P9000 does not use the Dock audio output, nor the audio on my plugable USB3-HDMI-DVI adaptor.
I don't know if it used to to audio before the latest firmware.

I have also used this device with much success, with Dell Android Tablet, Windows laptops, Motorola Moto-G: http://plugable.com/products/usb3-hdmi-dvi/
It "works" with P9000 but currently is not passing audio over HDMI. I can't remember if I ever had that working on earlier firmware.

Well, we don't all have Macbook Pro docks so does it work without that?
I bought a USB-C to HDMI cable today but I can't get it to work – are there any settings (or apps?) that I'd need to change/install to get this to work?
I just want to be able to plug my phone into a TV and play videos when I'm in hotels or away from home etc.
I'm new to both Android and the Nokia 8 so maybe I'm just missing something that's obvious?
(The most annoying thing is that it works perfectly on my old Nokia Lumia 950XL Windows Phone.)

From what I know the native support works with USB-C portable adapters with a HDMI port. Don't know about the cable ones.
I have this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EZTRI42/, and it's working well with the native support of the HTC U11, still don't know about Nokia 8 though
I've contacted Nokia customer care and that's their official answer regarding this matter:
"Thank you for contacting Nokia Mobile Care!
We would like to inform you that the Nokia 8 does not support video out through the USB type C neither the HDMI. If you want to connect the phone to the TV please try to buy the chromecast to cast the device to the TV.
We hope that the above information is useful for you! If not, or if you have another question, please feel free to contact us again.
Best regards,
Nokia Mobile Care "
Are you sure that the Nokia 8 can cast its screen though a macbook pro dock to an external display through HDMI @Luhccas-X10 ?
I have a dodcool usb c hub and hdmi does not work on 8.1
I got my Nokia 8 today and tried a USB-C to HDMI cable I used on my old HTC U11 and unfortunately it does not work.
I'm very much doubting that the Nokia 8 has this ability.
Well today I tried a macbook dock and no joy, seems pretty conclusive that it doesnt work
I'm pleased to confirm that Displaylink works with Nokia 8! I used this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B5RN9ZY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In theory any Displaylink hub or cable should work, note that you need to connect to the phone via a USB host cable e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01GKS2HCE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This should work on most devices with a USB port, for me it works on my Kindle HD and Laptop too should its a useful thing to have anyway.
I got the info from a thread for the OnePlus 5T so more info in there:

Well, very odd!
I tried a Displaylink-based hub myself with a Nokia 8 and it didn't work for me just like the regular adapters (which all of them, including the Displaylink one, worked with my HTC U11).
So, please elaborate about what you did. Is it a plug & play process? Did you do anything special to make it work for you?
By the way, I tried it with this Dell hub (which is Displaylink based on http://www.displaylink.com/products/find?vid_hdmi=1):
http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/acce...note_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=1&~ck=dellSearch
So firstly you need to have the displaylink app installed on your phone, apart from that you should just have to plug it in - the app will then prompt you to start showing your screen which you say OK to and that's it.
However... I found that the vast majority of the time it just simply doesn't work. Every time the device has a notification to say a device it connected and drawing power but very rarely will the displaylink actually work. I literally had to connect and disconnect the device around 100 times on some attempts before it works, sometimes fewer but the weird thing is once its connected and working, I can remove it and plug it back in and it will work straight away.
Its a really strange issue which I don't understand, it cant be the cable as it works consistently but only after getting it to work that first time. I'm thinking there may be a bug with the 8.1 firmware as another forum mentioned the maximum charge amp is reduced in 8.1. Another forum mentioned that on the Xperia XZ Premium display link only works with external power to the displaylink hub so perhaps its drawing to draw too much power and its just a fluke that it occasionally will work. Unfortunately I tried to connect external power to my hub and blew it so I can't test any further
I've tried the same setup on a Galaxy S7 Edge and that worked every time, no issue so it must be something strange with the device OR the adaptor used to convert the displaylink hub from USB to USB C.
LUHCCAS-X10
You fraud. I bought my Nokia 8 on the basis of your post. Because you decided to post this BS, and then made a prompt exit from this thread.
Now I am stuck with it. With this phone and with no ability to hook it up to my projector without unacceptable levels of latency through Chromecast or some such.
I even wasted money on this USB-C to HDMI cable (Thunderbolt 3 compatible), that doesn't work.
My only hope now is this DisplayLink setup. Any more news on it?
I messaged LUHCCAS and they said this is what they used: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB...a741666&transAbTest=ae803_4&priceBeautifyAB=0
Although they didn't specify which. None of them say they use displayport but I guess its possible, if so then perhaps they are not a fraud.
I have ordered a new displaylink hub so I will let you know if that works more consistently than the other one I tried.
Sounds good, please update the thread if you get the Hub. I want to use the Nokia with my Car Radio via HDMI (Appradio Unchained)
Displaylink adapter support
I'm happy to confirm that I managed to get the Nokia 8 connected to a TV using a DisplayLink adapter. :victory:
It's working pretty good (both image and sound) as long as the DisplayLink presenter app is installed.
From the first couple of minutes with it I didn't experience any issues that @jamhtcman mentioned and it's working very well at any time that I plug in the adapter to the phone (without an external power source).

Side note: You'll need to buy a separated USB 3.0 to USB-C OTG cable because the adapter in the box is too thick for most of the cases

Awesome news, awesome :good:
BTW does it charge your phone while your phone is plugged in?
Also this is probably a bit of a specific question to pose; but by any chance have you checked whether the phone outputs just 2-channels of sound (stereo) through the displaylink adapter, or does it output however many are in the source material (e.g. 5.1 channels if you play a video file with a 5.1. surround sound audio track).

No option to charge the phone while casting I'm afraid.
Moreover, I can't tell about the sound cause I don't have any TV and AVR that supports 5.1 channels sound though an hdmi port.

small and cheap it can fit in your pocket dont need to buy that huge Samsung dex station for over $100 either.

I also use this Bluetooth keyboard/mouse pad to use with the dex, It is one of best I found, because it has metal back very thin, and light. The metal back I never thought would be able to find on a keyboard/mouse like this.

Agree. I am using it for some time now and have had no issues at all.... Works as Sammy's Dex.
Does it work for Dex? Because lots of the reviews online say no.
I have a KSWNG unit, which looks similar. It works great on my Nintendo Switch, but I am having some issues with it running Dex. It requires power to load Dex. Without power, it only does screen mirroring. When I use external power, my full USB port stops functioning. I can only use either/or.
Yes works with dex, turns on dex on note 8
Are you running stock Samsung firmware?
Is external power required for Dex on your unit?
Can you charge AND use USB while using Dex?
My Note 8 is using CRA9 Oreo, requires external power to turn on Dex (screen mirroring without), and adding power will disable the Full USB port.
So I can do screen mirroring with my keyboard/mouse, OR Dex using the phone as a touchpad.
I am on 7.1.1 I am not sure if it runs without external power.
It has 3 ports 1 usb c to charge 1 HDMI 1 usb
Then a male usb c to connect to the phone
I am asking if you can charge AND use the USB port for external mouse/keyboard.
All of the reviews I've seen/read say that the Rocketek only uses Dex without power, however I think Samsung is trying to kill off these 3rd party adapters by requiring Power during use, which my adapter disables the USB port.
Can you confirm you can run Dex while charging and using a USB mouse?
I just told you it has 3 ports one usb, one usb c, one HDMI, what else would you do with a usb c then to charge it, then a usb c male to plug into phone did you look at the pictures look at Amazon at all or the reviews you can answer your own question

I use this one. It's ridiculously tiny and well made; the USB C that plugs into the note 8 folds into the back of the hub. Works flawlessly with Samsung dex with and without power. I'm on Dr. KETAN'S N5 ROM. I use DEX MAX free app to allow all my apps to display full screen. Everything is perfect.
I have one too. It doesn't show the charging light, but it does in fact charge. I'm using a lightning charger. I also have a K400 hooked up and it works well. I have all 3 8 series phones and it works fine. For sure not as robust as the dock, but I keep mine I a case.
EDIT
Using it now. It is a fast charge. I have never used it with a "slow" USB wall wart.
Do any of these support ultrawide monitors (2560x1080)? I have the DeX Station connected to a LG Ultrawide display, and I end up with vertical black bands on both sides.
Or perhaps this is a software limitation, rather than hardware.
I believe it supports same as normal dex, so what ever the normal one can do, 4k I think is possible but could be wrong
It seems interesting. Is it possible to charge the phone while the dock is being used as Dex?
Does this still work? I heard Samsung updated it to no longer work with 3rd party stations.

I'm on January security patch and just used my generic Dex yesterday, also another question above, it (fast) charges at same time when the unit is plugged into a fast charger.

I have an LG ultrawide and have full screen in dex mode, Note running in high performance mode with whatever screen settings that is, I do get a pop up message about screen settings but it goes away and I have full screen

Can you post a picture of your Ultrawide using Dex in 21:9? Is it streched?

Running a Note 8 with Oreo and have a generic USB-C to USB dock that I got off of amazon and Dex is working great. Even bought a usb-c extension cable for it (just came today) and it all works brilliantly.
Has anyone used their Note 9 and the new dex? I can see why people would use it but does anyone really use it as a daily driver?
I'm using DeX as a main driver for productivity, but I'm not using Samsung's DeX station...
Also using Dex daily. At work using a 1st gen dock, at home a 3rd party usb hub.
It's great to replace my laptop. My only grief is not being able to open multiple instances of excel

Nope, I'm using a 3rd party one
Me too, Just the USB-C to HDMI adaptor but I got it for Around $10Aud...
I have the Dex pad and Station too but this is so much more mobile, no additional power needed... Just a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard...
Not sure how fast it will eat up the battery though....
So I want to connect my Razer mouse and keyboard currently connected to my main PC and monitor to my Note 9 when Dex'd via cable. I know i'll need a hub of some sort, so wanted some expertise on which hub to get, but also wanting to know the best way to set this up minimally.
Also looking at different Dex options for my note 9. already have a usb-C - HDMI adaptor that aslo has a usb-pass through power - (to charge the phone) - but no keyboard\mouse options as yet.
Without hijacking your thread, For me there are two requirements
1) Portable setup, simple hdmi dongle and small portalbe tablet bluetooth keyboard\mouse~ glide pad in built.
2) Permenant setup - like the new Dex Pad (or 3rd party - as Dex Pad doesnt have USB 3).
Sounds like your chasing more of #2 - but what I am wondering is do you want you razor keyboard and mouse to both permanently and always function connected to your PC - and have some kind of double adaptor\hub setup - that if you "do" plug in your Dex Phone - then without moving\unlplugging you K&B - they still work both on the PC and Dex at the same time? Is that right? Share 1 x K&M across both Dex and PC at the same time?
OR
When you plug in the dex - it "switches" all input fully over to dex [only]? cause I am not sure how if you type on the Keyboard its not going to send to both PC and DEX apps if its just on some kind of shared hub etc.

Yep, trying to get a more permanent solution where my keyboard and mouse will work across both DeX and PC at the same time.

Thats interesting idea, I think thou you would get input being sent to 'both' devices - so your typing into a spreadsheet on Excel via DEX, and your regular PC is also getting the same character input \ mouse movements sent to it - if it even worked via some kinda hub.

i think those kind of setup can be achieved with bluetooth keyboard and mouse that supports multiple device switch. for example, I'm using my logitech T630 as a mouse for both of them, and just switch if I want to use it on another device.

Yep, I owned a wireless/bluetooth Logitech mouse and keyboard, but switched it out for some wired Razer ones for that clickyness!

Does not compute. I don't think that is possible. The best you can do is probably get Logitech equipment and switch out the unified receiver from computer to Dex. I will be testing to see if that works for me.

Of the three options: Dex Pad, Dex Station, 3rd Party USB-C to HDMI adapter, which one outputs 4K and if you know at what refresh rate, i.e., 30HZ or 60Hz?

There are plenty of C-HDMI that do 4K at 60Hz, same as the official Samsung one that was just released.

I believe all 3 do 4k at 60hz.
The Samsung Dex pad/station do and the 3rd party adaptor is advertised as 4k 60hz and I can't see much difference between the Samsung products and the 3rd party cable... Here's the link if you want to check out the USB-C to HDMI cable - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-C-t...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Not seeing much difference does not guarantee anything. Buying the Samsung stuff guarantees compatibility. And damn, Samsung's cable is expensive, especially straight from them. I am sure price will come down but that is high. I'm glad I got the DEX pad though. Would've been nice to keep the Ethernet port but that takes up bandwidth.
Dex is good though. Surprisingly good. I tried it yesterday and I think I mentioned this before it is like a mini windows 7 with an android overlay. I thought for sure there would be noticeable latency but NOPE! it's good. I have a really nice laptop. The DEX pad is auxiliary and light weight. I have a Logitech unifying receiver with accompanying keyboard and mouse. Put a thumb drive on the second USB port and get a nice high quality lifestyle looking extension cord and you have a very gratifying portable desktop experience. I for sure will be using Dex to back up my phone to thumb drive and then back up from thumb drive to laptop. I'd rather not hook my phone up to my laptop when I don't have to.
Anybody have one of those Asus monitors that is powered by USB? I think the cheaper one is about $125. I wonder how good it looks and what the minimum power requirement are for the monitor. I doubt 5v at 500ma or 900ma which are USB 2 and 3 specs are applicable to the monitor. Even so I wonder if the Anker battery packs can power it. Asus monitor, 2 or 3 Anker battery packs, DEX pad with thumb drive and keyboard and mouse and you're good to go probably 2-3h 8h workdays without plugging into a socket.
What resolution are able to get via dex? I cant use the 2560x1440 - only 1920 x 1080.
Does the Dex Pad or station get better resolution?
Looking to find a USB hub for my phone. I see a ton of them online, and some of them even kinda say they work with phones. But I know not all of them do. Looking for one that can output HDMI and has at least one USB-A input (two would be nice, but not a deal breaker). I do realize it'll probably require PD input, that's not a problem. [email protected] would be my preference too as a minimum. The goal is to use my phone as a portable gaming device, so I'm hoping to have low input lag for the wired controller.
My hope is somebody has found a decent one that they've tried with this phone and works. Would also accept testimony from people who have tried it on the V30, or any other flagship USB-C Android phone that isn't Samsung (they use DeX, I need no feedback on that).
So... Anybody got any personal experience to share on this topic? Realize it's kind of a tall order, but I'm hoping somebody has found one that works and is reasonably priced.
I too would like to know this if anyone has some info on it. At the moment i have tried 2 different docks, the Alogic USB-C Dock Plus which is just plain **** to say the least, if you connect the charger and HDMI it will eventually crash the systemui freezing you completely. The other dock i have tried is a Satechi Slim Multi_Port Adapter which works to HDMI but does'nt charge the device at all even though it has a charger slot for it & chargers my other phones fine plugged in via the same cable.
MS Display Dock
I have used a Microsoft Display Dock, has 2 USB A-Ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, & charges simultaneously. The Razer Phone work fine with it (TESTED), but honestly the phone seems to be capable of being compatible with any Hub save the ones for the Nintendo Switch. Being that the Microsoft Display Dock is discontinued & old, you can probably find good bargains from 30$ or more. While it is name brand and, from personal experience, its a well built piece of tech, you might want to consider how you plan to listen to your device, and think about adapters with Aux-out if you plan to used wired headphones.
I was goofing around at work and we have these USB c travel adapters that have a USB, HDMI, Ethernet, and vga out, but can't charge at the came time. Upon further goofing around I plugged in Dell WD15 dock, bingo, full output on everything. Comes with a charger so it charges, Ethernet, display port, vga, USB ports. They run about 130 on Amazon right now. Plugged in our projector to it, then some external speakers, Bluetooth my gamepad to it. Loaded my some emulators and I was playing Mario kart while taking some support calls.
