Huawei P20 Pro Region Firmware - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I recently bought a p20 pro from China, and from my understanding, the firmware that comes with it is specific to China. This means that a lot of the features are still in Chinese, including the assistant, app store, and none of the google apps are installed (prob due to censorship). As I'm not too familiar with how to change that to the US or international firmware, any help would be appreciated. :fingers-crossed:

Hello,
To be honest the phone isn't that good at all, performance is kinda bad, chinese hardware, chinese software, no support for anything.
As far as I've searched on google, theres nothing about P7-L11 EMUI 3.0, sadly.
Even I am trying to exchange this phone for an LG Nexus 5 (older phone, made out of plastic, but higher performance with recent updates)
If I were you I would of gone back to the store and changed it for something more popular, since Huawei's P7 is the first 'flagship' phone introduced in 2014, yet its not popular at all with crappy performance but 'good' build quality (why would u wanna have 2 glass panels that are easily scratchable, and a camera lens thats made out of cheap plastic).
Sorry if I didn't help you very well, I've made the same mistake with this phone
Best regards,
James

Huawei P20 Pro - Factory Unlocked - International Stock - Firmware/OS options?

Hi guys,
Huawei P20 Pro International Unlocked phone purchased in the US. I'm very new to Android family and am trying to figure out as much as possible before attempting to root/setup different OS on my Huawei
Phone details:
- Model: CLT-L29
- Current build number: CLT-L29 8.1.0.121(C605 - Colombia)
- Kernel: 4.4.103+
- Hardware version: HL1CLTM
Here are some questions that have come up during my browsing time around these forums and trying to decide what to do with the new phone:
This is an international version of this phone. Does anyone know if in this case I can select any region, and I will just begin to belong to that region? Or my local IP is what determines the region? I've been able to find and select enUS and US as the country.
If you were to root this phone. What route would you take? What software do you trust the most? I've been reading up on all these local posts, and so far it feels like there are 2-3 ways to do the same thing. What's your rooting journey has been? Share your experiences. P.S. I did acquire unlock code from Huawei! My phone was still eligible.
Soft root. Is it even a thing in Android world? For example, I would like to remove all of Huawei apps from the phone (e.g. AppGalery - it doesn't work in the US) but preserve everything else. Do I have any options?
What custom OS is the most popular around Android community? What are the pluses or drawbacks?
Feel free to add any other experiences from dealing with customization of P20 Pro besides topics I've listed above. Pardon if something similar has already been posted before. I've looked around but might have missed it. A link to posts with some/partial answers to the questions above would be appreciated.
Thanks folks!

Huawei Today by region

Hi everyone
I was trying different region by random and discovered that several new features can be unlocked depending on region.
I am from France, if I change the region to Germany for exemple, i Can have several icons set in theme application. While in France it does not exist.
Also, their is a lot, a lot of new themes available with Chinese region, also a lot of always on displays new models.
Specific, if I switch the region to Russia, their is stock price with investing website available on the Huawei Today feature.
If everyone found other things, please share !
Salut!
It seems like regions affect the OTA availability dates. But aside from that, I removed most Huawei apps as 3rd party apps are usually more polished and in my opinion, offer more privacy.

Running GMS on a Mate 40 Pro Plus?

Hi, everyone!
Is there a way to run GMS on a (obviously Chinese) Mate 40 Pro Plus, preferably natively without using any virtual machine?
I was searching for an answer on the forum but I just can't find a definitive answer. I have seen comments about it being possible on Chinese versions of the Mate 40 Pro (and Plus) but I can't tell if it's true and can't find any tutorials on how to make it happen.
I would be very thankful if anyone could help me.
Thanks a lot!
Hey mate,
I don't have a Mate 40 Pro+, however, from what I read, it should be possible on Chinese variants. How? Well, apparently the LZPlay which allows to install Google services only works on Chinese variants. It used to work on devices like global Huawei P40 series, but on OLDER firmware. Kinda got out of topic here, but I just wanted to explain a bit.
Not a fan of this guy's videos
But if you follow the steps he showed, you should have GMS working on your Mate 40 Pro+. Again, I do not have this device, so I can't test it myself, but according to many people's experiences online, LZPlay, or in this case, "OurPlay" does work on Chinese variants of Huawei phones. Not sure if you gotta downgrade to a specific firmware, but probably not.
To people reading this: if I am wrong at any point in my post, feel free to point it out.

@Kotin89 Do you have funtouch or OriginOS version? There may be a difference. Almost all youtubers get the funtouch version.

Thank you for the reply @cmmdmx , I have funtouch OS. I did some digging around and it seems like its only available on the X70 pro and not not X70 pro plus. A very weird decision by Vivo !

Weird indeed, not available in my origin OS version either.
Could you do a quick check of the supported target fps on Funtouch? Vivo has limited 60fps support in external apps, which is a huge letdown.

Je voudrais acheter le téléphone en version indienne. Sur quel site puis je le trouver ?
I'm wondering whether people think it's a mistake to buy the Chinese version of the Vivo X70 Pro+.
I'm an English-speaker living in Italy, and the Chinese version is the only one available; I'd be buying it from Wonda. Compatibility with Italian networks doesn't look to be an issue. My concerns are the usual: bloatware, Chinese interface elements, Jovi instead of Hello Google, etc.
A couple of specific things: will this affect translation across apps (which is generally done via Google Translate)? I need to be able to translate stuff into Italian and Japanese, and from those languages into English.
And I'll need both Nova Launcher and WhatsApp. I do have a family member living in China, so if I have to sign up for things with a local phone number, that won't be an issue. Still, I worry I'm setting myself up for a major headache.

I buy my X70 Pro+ from Giztop eshop. No problems, the phone arrived in Ireland in about two weeks. No Custom payes. But I paid a lot, more than 900 €. Normally I always order from Tradingshenzen, but at that time they only had the most expensive version in stock. Today they are all available and 8 + 256 costs a great 827 €. With duty-free transport.
When unpacked from the box, it was already in the Google Play Store phone and the default English. Of course, there is bloatware (which mobile manufacturer doesn't?). Some Vivo applications are going to uninstall. The problem with Vivo apps is that they are 99% of the content is Chinese and I haven't found a way to change that. Actually, I'm not even interested, they just are there and I don't use them.
Origin OS settings are more difficult to understand. It took me a few days / hours to figure out how to allow various permissions and notifications for Google Play apps. The only problem still persists and that is that the phone does not notify me of received FB Messenger messages. In the settings, you can even click on the options "Default App Settings" and change Google applications to make calls for those from Vivo, etc. It's just still an Android OS. and the superstructure is inspired by MIUI and Oxygen OS for me. Google Assistant works when you press the microphone icon on the Google Taskbar, unfortunately it is written "currently unavailable on this device" for voice activation settings.
You don't need a Chinese phone number. You can create an account on the Vivo website via email and then log in to your phone with a password
@forgreenever Thank you! Very helpful. Sounds as if you don't regret not going with the global version.
Funny, I'm looking at Tradingshenzen now, and all of their X70 Pro+ models come with "Firmware: Multi - GE / EN /FR / ES/..." -- which sure sounds like global? (UPDATE: No, that seems to be the way they describe the Chinese version in many stores.)

Yes, these languages are in the official China Version of Origin OS. Few European languages.
I didn't seen nobody who can confirm languages inside India Funtouch OS
PS: Its actually my first phone with china version OS. And first Vivo and other BBK Electronics phone brands.
X70 Pro+ I choose because these great rated cameras. Its great experience for me. I worked before only with only Xiaomi and Samsung smartphones
I´ve got OriginOS version and I will be selling it.
All Google services work fine (Pay, Store etc.) but Android Auto does not work, battery life is poor and I do not get many notifications from messangers like WhatsApp or Signal (even if I set all permissions and disable battery optimization). The ROM is bloated with Chinese crap that cant be uninstalled and my network connection trough WiFi is very unstable.
The phone itself is great and the camera is amazing but OriginOS is complete trash and just not worth the trouble.

Bloatware can be easily uninstalled through adb command. To receive all notifications you have to remove com.pem.vivo.

I have removed some stuff trough ADB already but honestly I am not at age and mood to fiddle with the new phone anymore just to make it work. AndroidAuto not working and poor battery life is the main reason for me to sell it anyway.
Didnt know about com.pem.vivo though. I´ll give it a shot, thanks!

As far as I know, Android Auto doesn't work in any Android 11 phone if it is not a system app. Will see what is changed with Android 12 which has again different approach (through Assistant).
And the battery life is good.
