I am an Android Developer, but so far I've avoided rooting my phone or trying custom kernels, but lately I get the feeling I could learn so much more by really getting behind the curtain so to speak. I keep reading that if you root the phone you may void your warranty and no longer get over the air updates.
I'm on AT&T an paid full price for my Nexus One. I also got the phone engraved so I'm wondering what value if any the warranty actually has. Is it worth mucking around with custom kernels on the Nexus one, or should I get a cheaper dev phone like the G1 ?
Looking forward to hearing advice from other developers and what you've learned versus the risks involved.
Oh, Do you still get OTA updates as well?
I'm interested in hearing from people who decided the warranty was or was not work the risk. Looks pretty easy from what I can see.
Thanks all.
Just root it without unlocking the bootloader and you're good to go

root is fun and even better you can keep your warranty
Does using the technique of not unlocking the bootloader also mean you can run custom ROMs and/or recoveries? Or just gain root access to the stock ROM?

You CAN root your Nexus One without losing your warrenty.
I had my bootloader Unlocked, then i got a issue with mounting SD cards.
I sent the phone to HTC Repair center and just got it back today with the issues gone and Bootloader locked
Unlocking your Nexus One bootloader does void your warrenty with HTC, but if you experience hardware issues, they dont care if you unlocked your bootloader !!
By unlocking your Bootloader you can put whatever ROM on your phone you like, doesn't have to be stock
About the OTA's.
Yes you will get them if you run Stock ROM's.
You will not be able to install them however since you are not using a stock recovery image.
Wow, didn't know they didn't care about unlocked bootloader as long as your problem is in hardware. My GPS doesn't work at all and I'd like to send in my phone for repairs but the bootloader is unlocked. How long did it take for you to get your phone back?

I sent my phone from Denmark to UK, it took 1½ week quite fast
Can you point me to a link with instructions on how to do this?
I've found a few videos and articles that say this can be done, but reading to the end they all say seem to be closed or say not to do it.
Is it still possible to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader? I've searched google, but keep coming up with dead ends.

DC unlocker costs about 5 USD. So far it worked for many, but it may stop working in the future if Huawei manages to patch the opportunity they are using. You do get OTA's if you just unlock, but not anymore if you root or install twrp.
Openkirin makes good treble roms. Their website is very informative (openkirin.net) and the developers are active on the Telegram support channel.

It's a little excessive because there is no guarantee of a good result

Which ones?
It's just poor for Huawei that they do this to their users.
If I buy something it's mine, it's not the property of the manufacturer anymore.
Even though Huawei added this regulation to their Eula it's just a flaw to their customers and for me a reason to tell everybody they shouldn't buy Huawei anymore. The P10 was my first and my last Huawei device.
I'm happy that I have my unlock code.

Congrats about that but this is not my case, I'm on stock and wonder if I could unlock my bootloader with this people and I was not happy with open Kirin for example, I could go back to the same state of the phone I am now? I need to please that the answer is safe as I can not afford to buy another mobile. Now I have the VTR L09 8.0.0.375 c432 and and I've never done anything to the Phone.
With what service would you make a complete copy of the phone? I know it's two questions, but I need you to help me with the two, please. Thank you.
You need to backup your /system with TWRP before you flash an Open Kirin Rom.
After this you'll be able to go back but you still need to do a factory reset.
You also be aware that stock Android misses some nice features EMUI has like scrolling screenshot or flip cover support.

Exactly. Did you ever used stock Android? It's not a great experience as you expect, maybe. I tried it for some weeks and turned back to EMUI after missing 100% functionality.
UpI used rr rom in a moto g 4g and I loved this rom, the look overall. I don't use flip covers and scrolling screenshot lucky for me. But what else you loose/miss changing to rr rom plz? And remember my question before about need root besides for backing up with twrp? Nfc works? Another three questions sorry?

1-Yes if you buy the phone its yours. Do whatever do you want to..sorry what you can do (with locked bootloader). The device is maybe yours, but the software isn´t. I repair phones for a friend of mine who has a mobile shop (seeling making repairs). I do only the software things (reflashing roms, unbricking devices, removing FRP, miaccount lock and so on) and 99,7% of coustomers don´t even know what android version they have and what is root. The rest (0,3%) are noobs who don´t understand what to do and they bricked their phone trying to root, instal magisk....
2-The problem is, that unlocking bootloader is matter of maybe 1% of all customers. Then 50% of this 1% claim warranty repair because they bricked their device. so why souhld Huawei deal with that, they just don´t allow unlocking bootloader and tha´t it.
3-DC Phoenix is driven by Huawei. It is some year known fact.
Even if it's just for 0,3% of all Android users it's a matter of Principe.
When I buy something it's mine. As you said, the software license is legally owned by the manufacturer but not the hardware. So, when I buyed a phone I should've the right to install a third party software to remove the ownership by the manufacturer.
When I buy a T-shirt I can modify it by myself as I want even if there's a logo visible, which is official linceses by the manufacturer who isn't allowed to forbid modifications on this T-shirt.

Depends on your build.
I have successfully unlocked mine in December using an unlocking service I found on eBay from "mnz technologies" but it seems they no longer offer it. I also know of a site called "GSMZambia.com" and they claim that they can do it but the service is also unavailable at the time of posting.
So to answer you question: it is possible but probably not at the moment, you'll just have to be on the lookout.

Nope.
That said, it depends on your build if you can use HCU client to unlock. (Was patched in May 2018).
But there are a few services, all are down at the moment though.

My exact same reasons for moving away a couple months ago to oneplus 6 and I haven't regretted it for one moment.
Huawei pulled the plug on advanced users and as you can see on this forum the support has been killed subsequently where as oneplus has HUGE community support.
My primary phone right now, with xxx-no-limtis-rom, magisk, xposed and after dedicating my time it gives me a full two days of mild usage time. I passed my mate 10 pro to my daughter but she doesn't get more than one day. Pitty, it's a nice phone with good hardware, but having a manufacturer decide for me what I can do with my phone is just outrageous.
Sorry to flog a dead horse, but has there been any progress in getting bootloaders unlocked for Mate 10 Pros? I wanted to root mine ages ago, but stupidly dropped it and broke the screen. It's taken me a while to get around to replacing the screen and now it's good t ogo, but in that time it appears that all means to root it are no longer valid.
It is a BLA-L09 single-im Mate 10 Pro, which is at stock EMUI and Android of 8.0.0, with build 8.0.0.133(C782) and security patch 1st October 2018. Can anyone give me a definite answer as to whether I can root this, and if so, how?

You can, but you will need to disassemble your phone. You will need to use test-point to write board firmware, then use HCU Client while on board firmware to get unlock code. After this you repair imeis and stuff using HCU, else you will have no imeis or network. There's a lot of work for the code xD When you've repaired you need to flash a dload firmware, preferably 8.0 but it needs to be from after May 2018.
If you plan on using EMUI10 you won't need the unlock code as Huawei removed the ability to unlock altogether, even with the code...
It can be tricky getting the back off as it's IP rated. If you replaced screen yourself you probably have opened it already
Let me know if you want to do it, I can assist you on Telegram.
Also please note that a HCU Client/DC Phoenix license is needed, it's $19ish for 3 days of usage. And you will need BLA Board firmware. Dload to 8.0.0.133(C782) can be found for free on androidhost.ru.

Not using the 10 pro, but normal mate 10 with emui 10. I have option in developer options to enable oem unlock which might be bootloader unlock. and I have unlock code saved from emui 8.
1) Is there a point in unlocking bootloader if there is no development on roms? And is there even a way to root it with an unlocked bootloader anyways
2) I didn't want to lose data trying it if there was no benefits to unlocking it
3) I kind of forgot how to unlock it anyways, if someone had old instructions, I'd be open to testing if it works up to the point of actually doing it because I don't want to lose data.

Hi all,
Is there a way to root the zenfone 8 without tripping knox? Reading about the ramdump issues has made me want to keep the device in a state that I can reverse and send back if need be (at least for a while).
Cheers
Knox in an Asus phone? It's a Samsung thing.
There is no KNOX.
But if you unlock your bootloader - then ASUS will receive your s/n of motherboard and you will loose your warranty permanently. I heard that in some EU countries it should'n be a problem, but personally I have never had such law practice.
So wait for other replies or contact your area ASUS support.
Ah, okay thanks. Am I correct in thinking there is no root that can be done without unlocking bootloader and flashing a patched boot img? Sorry if these are silly questions, it has been a while for me!

That is correct. From what I understand; without an unlocked bootloader, nothing regarding boot images or system files are accessible.
Since Android 6 'regular' rooting requires an unlocked bootloader. There are exploit solutions like Kingoroot, which maybe still might work (not sure a bout this), but the problem with these dubious tools is, that you don't know what they really are doing, and how they possibly modify and monitor your phone and data from then on..

Okay, thanks. Yeah, I don't think I want to travel down that road!
I just bought this phone. It's actually quite nice and better than I expected. Paid 475€ for it brand new in a store here in Italy. I'm coming from the good old XZ1 Compact, aka the best phone ever made. This seems to be a big (too big, tfw no phone under 5.5) improvement over it.
That being said, I was wondering how does Asus react to their phones being unlocked. I come from Sony which does not like unlocking, in fact on the XZ1 and XZ2, unlocking was permanent and you lost drm keys and stock features fOrEveR. How is it on this one? Does it void the warranty forever? Do you lose stock features after unlocking? Can you relock the bootloader and go back to full stock eventually?
I googled and searched all over but I find conflicting and contraddicting informations about this, on top of the usual ****ty websites with ai generated copypaste guides.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you can relock the phone but I doubt it.
You can reinstall the Original ASUS Firmware and it still works like before. You can also install the updates for the original OS manually (I did not test if OTA still works)

To add to bnsmb's response,
When the phone is unlocked, some apps will not work, like google pay for example, but the bootloader can be relocked with one fastboot command and you will get all features back (except OTA updates from the settings, you will have to update manually)
(It is not recommended to relock the bootloader when not on the Stock Asus ROM)
To relock, simply type these two commands
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem asus-csc_lk
reboot
The phone will prompt you to do a factory reset when booting

Yes, I have tried it once, but some people reported it does not work depending on the version, I tried on Android 12 and it worked the first time (and on android 11 but that was the first unlock a while ago)
Thank you for the info! I can't find the official manual or faq though, even from the link bnsmb provided :\
That's why I asked here in the first place. From what I can tell after looking through this info, they will know you have unlocked from the imei, considering their unlock tool talks to the mothership before doing the deed. It is still unclear if they will respect the warranty period even after unlocking. I don't care about asking them for support on an unlocked phone, I just want to make sure it will get repaired or replaced for free (in terms of money and hassle) if I get a defect down the line that is unrelated to the unlock, such as a hardwre failure or assembly defect.
Anyway, it seems the only way to shed light on this mystery is to ask Asus themselves. I will report back as soon as they respond to my questions.
Warranty with unlocked bootloader
The warning text of the unlock app links you to the Warranty Policy for ASUS Phones, where the relevant part reads:
6. Exclusions from this limited Warranty Service
[...]
(m) Unusability or damage to hardware of the product caused by installing and using any kind of the Unlock Device App, which is a utility that will unlock your product’s boot loader but will render the warranty null and void.

So yes as is usual, they will try to use "you having unlocked your bootloader" as an excuse to not repair their broken phones under warranty.
But, depending on your local consumer protection laws, there is a good chance this is actually illegal. In the EU for example, during the 2 years of required warranty THEY have to prove YOU that the defect was ACTUALLY CAUSED by you messing with the phone's software - which generally speaking they can't because it wasn't.

Anyway, in the meantime, Asus replied to me saying that if you unlock you lose your entire warranty no matter what. I reiterated, asking if I will also lose my right to a free repair for issues totally unrelated to the unlock, and they said yes, you will lose every right to repair.
So that is the official stance!
Too bad, I'm still in the return period so I might just get rid of it and hunt for a Pixel 5. Kind of sad though, the phone performed pretty well for me so far. But I need muh root and eventually LineageOS...
