Android P is coming to OnePlus 3/3T

Wow that is big!
Oneplus is providing Android 9.0 to our old device!!

Huge props to the OnePlus! Getting such long support is so great! Hope they will bring Project Treble with P as well
i'll believe it when we do get the updates already. keeping my expectations tempered as OP can always announce "after further testing Android P on the 3/3T, we regret to say that...blah blah blah". not a knock on OP though. just mighty glad i'm using O w/ not so late security patches on my 3T

With the launch of the OP5, does the OP3/3T will continues to receives updates? Will it be updated to Android O?
We are not Oneplus, we're just normal owners/Oneplus users just like you, we don't know now about this than you do. We can only guess, no definitive answers. I don't think you will get any definitive answer out of Oneplus even if they would hang around here outside of their own forum.
Don't ask me now where I read it, but I remember that I saw that Android O is scheduled for December 2017 for OP3/T
If I find it, I'll update here.
Edit: Found

This site is dubious. Doesn't say any source. As OnePlus has not made any announcement regarding android o anywhere it's pretty hard to say right now. They said OnePlus 2 will get nougat but never specified any timeline and now OnePlus 2 users are bombarding every forum asking for it. So untill and unless OnePlus 5 actually is released we can't say if they'll show the same love to OnePlus 3 / 3T.

Well, I admit if a website names already the operating system, even an official name is not announced yet, it is dubious; I agree.
However seeing the current updates, I hope it is true, otherwise I return to Google Phones, there I know that I only get for 2 years updates
Cheers

Yes. I also do hope we don't suffer the fate of OnePlus 2 users. If they stop updating it, I'd also opt for a pixel.

According to David Y on OnePlus Official forums:
First, my answer to the question on the thread title:
Yes. OnePlus 3/3T will get Android O. OOS team are working on it, even new community app (not public yet) just finished the compatibility work for Android O last week.
Here are some update I'd like to share with you guys:
Currently the OOS team are focusing on the OBT program and Android O for OP3/3T, also stable updates for OP5. Next stable update for OP3/3T was planned, will be a minor update updated Android security patch level to August.
I will keep you all in the loop once I got some latest updates.

Ask op2 owners about promises like this. Will see.

Well, unlike the OP2, the OnePlus 3 was much more successful, and had no hardware issues. Plus, due to the similarities in hardware (and consequently software) between the OnePlus 3 and the 3T, they can essentially provide support for 2 devices at the cost and effort of one. If they, for instance, decide to go back on their promise for some reason, they would be offending the owners of 2 devices at the same time. As explained earlier, there would be no logical reason in updating just the 3T and not the 3. Now the only way forward for OnePlus would be to deliver on the standard 18 month support promise. It WOULD however, be a miracle if OnePlus goes one step further and give us the P update too, whenever it comes out. Unlikely, but a man can dream...

the 1st time was a promise , this time is an official timeline, he stated what the development team is working on already , not what they intend to...so,
i get it was bad not to provide the OP2 with the N update, but the circumstances for the 3/T is different.

Totally agree drakonizer. :highfive:
Lets hope Android O isn't a mess, (like Lollipop was,) and that the final OS update for our devices is stable with good battery life. For the next year after it can be left untouched with just the security patch updated.
I also don't expect OP to update us to Android P.
If they do a blog like this I would love this! I do rather have Oneplus being honest to us with what they are planning and working on!
It's not like they having so many devices to update, so i don't see any problem they support 3/T further, to P maybe? why jack up the ram to 6 Gb and says it's for "future proofing" if the software alone isn't supported for long. this device is more than capable handling O and so on
As Oneplus has released kernel sources for Oneplus 5t as mentioned in this post by @Funk Wizard
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/oneplus-5t-kernel-sources-t3705825
Hope they keep Board Support Package(BSP), the proprietary libraries, Unified just like they did with Oneplus 3 and 3t.
As Oneplus 5 is not available anymore, Developers wont get Oneplus 5 and will obviously go and Develop for Oneplus 5t.
Thus we'll have to rely on Unified builds for Custom Roms on this just 4 months 26 days old device.
I hope Oneplus unifies it.
Edit 1. I think this post by @eng.stk in Oneplus-5t forum suggests possibility of unified development ?

What do you guys think?
A lot of awesome devs have already bought the oneplus 5 so I don't think we need to worry.
Op5 will get Oreo in 2018, op5t in December. This is exactly why I won't buy another HTC phone again after my Sensation. OnePlus is going that way with big steps.

HTC U11 already gettin' Oreo. In Taiwan. And not beta or gamma or delta.
The open beta for N for the OP3 launched on 30 Nov, 2016.
The open beta for N for the OP3T launched on 31 Dec, 2016.
Open beta builds were unified in early 2017.
Hopefully, the stable Oreo build slated for release in early 2018 will be a unified build for the 5 and 5T. **fingers crossed**

It doesn't matter now anymore. They already lost their fanbase and customers because of their sh***y update policy, they were neck to neck with Samsung, look where's HTC now.

My biggest worry is that they aren't porting project Treble. Leaked beta doesn't seem to have it.

You can safely assume it never will, coz it wasn't launched with oreo.

Not necessarily true. Essentially Phone did not launch with Oreo and it has it with the latest beta O.

OnePlus officially stated in their AMA yesterday that the 5/5T builds will "eventually" be "synced" like they did with the 3/3T.
Yay!

That was always on the cards.
Thats already one feature OnePlus 6 will be having making it different from Op5t.
Start counting.
OnePlus is smart enough to not launch Op5t with Oreo or they could have delayed its released by 1 month and Launch with treble support.
Project Treble, as you've heard, is an amazing new update structure for Android devices and also can affect the speed and stability of Android development.
OnePlus has decided not to implement the current OnePlus devices with Project Treble, and they haven't given an explanation as to why they decided not to.
Project Treble can help the 3/3T as they are almost out of the OEM support days. If they do implement this, you may be looking at Android P ROMs for your device within days of the release of the AOSP commits.
Stand UP for your device and our responsibility as the community should be to bring support for our device for as long as possible. If OnePlus implements this, our device will be future proof for the aeons to come.
Your vote counts.

Sorry, I'm coming from the 3T forums, and I didn't search here for a mirror thread. I just wanted to spread the news of this petition as wide as possible.
Almost 11K, I don't think it'll be enough. But it seems that OnePlus is thinking about give us treble.
Any ideas do we have a chance to get this beta ?) Or need wait for Pixel 3?)

OP6, Xiaomi and others will come with Android P. But nothing dor P20 Pro for now.
I tried googling Porject Treble support for P20 <anything> and did not get anywhere. Based on Huawei's track record I fear 2019 for Android P on a P20 Pro. But sure as hell I am reluctant to buy any 2018 flagship phone that does not either have a Manufacturer confirmed Android P implementation schedule or is actually shipping with P or a Beta.

Hence most are grabbing a Pixel phone, I guess. I do enjoy my P20 Pro, but would like manufacturers to push updates more frequently.
