Stay with me now, I haven't seen anyone talk about this so this is either perfectly normal or something is wrong with my phone. I just got my phone today, but when you shake or lightly tap the top of the phone to your palm, the phone makes a noise as if something is lose inside, a rattle if you will.
To me it sounds like the internal weight that causes the phone to vibrate. I first noticed it simply setting the phone down on my desk this morning, and started trying to find ways to reproduce the noise (tapping to your palm works best)
What concerns me is that my G1 didn't make this noise, and i'm just wondering if everyone else's N1 does this. So if anyone can confirm my insanity, that would be great.
I can't say I am getting the same noise with my phone. (Thankfully)
I must say the biggest thing I **DON'T** miss is the SQUEEKY sounds my old G1 would make!!!!
No idea what youre talkin about

Hey, I totally know what you are talking about
Nothing is wrong with the phone Sounds like a normal plastic vibration. It is either the trackball or the accelerometer. Our it could be something else those are just my best guess.
As far as I am concerned it is just a little loose, but now that I think about it the headphone jack could be making the noise. That recedes into the phone body so requires a casing to insert the jack into the phone.
Nothing to be alarmed about.
Hrm, Well I can say its not the trackball (although that initially made the most sense!), I could still hear the noise wile holding the trackball. And I tried the same thing with headphones connected, and could still hear it. But, its reassuring that my phone isn't the only one doing this.
I get the same thing. Could be the vibra motor. like shaking a ps3 controller produces similar feedback of something moving around.

Yup, just wanted to make sure it was normal. I'm pretty sure this is accurate.
the rattle noise is most definatly the auto focus camera. It commonly affects the iPhone 3GS, it doesnt cause any problems, but if the rattle gets to you you can send it in if you so wish.

Hey, you are 100% correct!. I can hear it after when I have it snap pictures, exact same noise. I probably won't be able to stand it and will have it fixed/replaced. But that is most defiantly it.
i wouldnt exactly go sending it in.. this is normal.. mine does the same thing.. so does my mother's eris..
Mine does this as well and I too find it extremely annoying. Can anyone possibly confirm if they all do this and if it is normal or not?
Bump (10 char)
How anyone can find this extremely annoying is beyond me..
Stop using your phone as maracas I say.
My Nexus One just recently started doing this, I haven't dropped it or banged it against anything either. It happens when I open and close any app that uses the camera.

Lol those squeeks were so fregin annoying.
i have the same thing on HTC Desire
I have the same rattling noise. I even hear it when I have the haptic feedback on. Each vibration leads to this rattling/crackling noise. Super annoying.
indeed it's the camera. i especially notice it when using the barcode scanner app.
Is anyone else getting a very slight "processing-type" sound when on phone calls? It's hardly enough to notice and I only hear it when the other person and I are completely silent, but it's there. I was just wondering if it's only my phone or all of them. It's not really loud enough to complain about, just asking out of curiosity.
What does a processing-type sound, sound like?
Like your computer when it is processing something, or maybe when the hard drive is being read, though not as loud as either of those obviously since it's so small. It's hard to explain, but if you listen closely when no one is talking but a phone call is in progress, you should hear it.
Hard drives make clicking sounds.
The disks also make a slight "whirring" noise which is more of what I was referring to.
EDIT: I listened to it again and this doesn't really accurately describe it. It's very hard for me to explain and as I said it's so quiet that it's really a non-issue, just a curiosity I guess. If anyone else happens to notice it at some point, let me know, if not then no worries.
Ahhh. See now we are getting somewhere. I know what you're referring to. That's interference you're hearing most likely. Remember back when if you put your old GSM phone near some speakers you'd occasionally hear weird sounds kinda like a chirping and buzzing etc? You still get that nowadays but its not as profound. Its just a small whining sound. As long as you have a speaker and you have something emitting radiowaves near it, you will have speaker feedback
Oh I know that sound. If I put my phone near my speaker after sending a text or anything it does that. I would say it could possibly be a very quiet version of this, but to me it sounds like the sound is coming from the phone itself and not the speaker, but only when on a phone call. I'm not sure about that though and you may be right about it just being some sort of interference - could be that it's just fooling my ears into thinking it's not coming from the speaker since it doesn't fit in at all with the rest of the call.
I mean nothing else on the phone actually makes noise, aside from the small click that the power and volume keys make. You don't hear electricity or data moving through memory or the cpu etc...
Hey guys,
Ive had my HTC One for about a month now and I have just noticed there is a very faint rattling noise when I tap the top-back of the phone gently with my finger.
The sound is almost like it could be the volume rocker, but I’m quite sure it isn’t. And it cannot be heard when I shake the phone, only when tapped with my finger.
Just wondering if anyone can confirm or deny the same experience with their device, or if they have any suspicions as to what might be making the sound.
Thanks for your help.
I think I know what you are talking about.
I think it is the way the phone is designed. Basically the speakers will get activated and all you hear is very subtle noise. Then when it deactivates after couple second you touched the back button. The speaker will let out this little noise not as subtle, but still very quiet.
Is that what you're hearing?

Hi Xx-Ness-xX,
Thanks for the reply. I dont think it sounds like the speakers. When I tap the back, Im not touching any button. Just tapping the area within a 1-2cm radius of the camera will produce the sound.
Also, the sound is not ongoing, it only last a fraction of a second, as long as the plain tap sound.

It's the camera focus mechanism. It's normal.
Awesome, thanks a lot for the response alanchai. Logical and relieving.
Thanks again.

Sorry I didn't explain clearly enough. The sound I am describing also only last a fraction of a second. The easiest way to tell is to check "Touch sounds" under Settings --> Sound. Then go to a quiet room, after the touch sound is played (either by pressing back capacitive button or on screen button) wait about a second or two then you should be able to hear a noise when the speakers get deactivated.

Hi again Xx-Ness-xX,
Ahhh, that makes sense. I do normally have ‘touch sounds’ deactivated. But following your instructions, I do hear the faint hiss when the speakers are activated (but not producing any intentional noise). I’m pretty sure this is a common trait when current is being fed to speakers (not just in phones). So you shouldn’t be concerned about that sound coming from your speakers.
I do, however, believe that the noise I was originally questioning in the original post is produced by the rattle of the camera focus mechanism, as suggested by alanchai.
Cheers.
Has anyone observed speaker crackling above mid-volume? My top speaker has a buzzier character that gets more noticeable as you play louder and bassier/fuller sounds. I'm not sure if it's crackling or something rattling inside the case. The lower speaker sounds clear and normal.
I have this as well.

Same
Mine doesn't
I made a short recording to show what I mean. The sample is from plugging in my magnetic cable a couple of times. The charging sound is particularly annoying to hear crackling.
I may have to send my unit back to Clove for warranty service. Bummer.
I have the same issue, and yes, it is the charging sound that is the most annoying, it sounds exactly the same as yours, is if something is loose inside and vibrates.
Until now I was willing to live with it since apart from that I love this device... until yesterday evening that is, when I realized that also the gyroscope calibration is way off (when trying to play Doodle Jump) and there doesn't seem to be a way to do a system-level calibration of that thing anymore. There used to be in older Xperia models in the service menu. Now I'm thinking of sending it back, which I really would rather not, having already configured everything to my liking...
[Q] Do you guys get a noise when the vibration motor "vibrates" when typing?
So when I'm typing at all. The vibration motor makes a like scratching noise and doesn't vibrate but when say I call it. It'll vibrate normally. Is this normal?

Some of the Nexus 5 devices have this too. Some consider it a defect, and some dont. If you dislike it, I would just exchange device for a new one.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
I'm noticing this, too. I also saw a similar post on the nexus 6 subreddit.
Can more owners of the Nexus 6 chime in? Is this a defect or normal?
Mine does it as well - I think it's normal. Probably the camera lens.
Mine too
The vibrator in this phone is really loud. If it is a ticking sound I agree that it is probably the OIS parts in the camera making noise as they move around since the motors appears to be near the camera. IF you shake your phone you might be able to hear it as well and a lot of people think that's a defect when they've not use a device with OIS before.
Occasionally once I start typing a lot, yes. I just turned the vibration length down in the keyboard settings... helped somewhat.
Ah so this one also must have cheap vibrator like n5. I wished it had Samsung like one. Bad..
I had to exchange my first N6 for a new one due to the sensors failing. My original one did exactly this, it was driving me nuts. My new one does not though.
Mine is loud but it doesn't rattle anything
Mine is loud also. Noticeable while in a quiet room. Nothing seems broken but I hate it drives me nuts. Other then that phone is great
On the first generation nexus 5, I've observed this. The culprit was the loose physical buttons. Do check the same on the nex6 as well.
Changing the orientation of the phone usually helps.
Yeah I was just thinking today how ****ty mine sounds when I'm in a quiet environment. I turned off my feedback for the keyboard . Went back to my M8 and that vibration is solid when typing.
I've returned att n6 for vibrator rattle. I am not exchanging it becuz I don't want to play return game. I am really disapponted for this price they used cheap vibrator like N5. I am done.
Anybody doesn't hear rattle I quiet environment?
Mine is loud also.
Had the same problem on my first n6. The second one is MUCH better!
I'm not talking about loud vibrator. Something's rattling while vibrating in quiet environment. You hear it.
I notice this too when I use haptic feedback on my Nexus 6. I hear a click/rattle or something coming from the top speaker. It's kinda annoying in a quiet environment.
It only happens when it vibrates quickly (i.e. typing with haptic feedback on). I don't hear it when there's a longer vibration (i.e. incoming message/phone call). Either that, or the vibration is so powerful/loud it's overcoming the rattle.
I'm going to the AT&T store after work that has a Nexus 6 demo model. I'll compare it with that and report back with my findings.
Mine seems to have this issue too. I can hear some noises when I'm typing with haptic feedback on. Not a big issue to me too since I dislike typing with haptic feedback.
