Default screen resolution - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Default setting - FHD.
I changed that to max setting.
Why Samsung decided not to use full screen potential in default settings? Can I expect bigger battery drain?

Yes, it will actually drain more. A good way to know how much you can save being on fhd. Set to max, then go to battery settings and choose any of the other two battery saver mode, next to each"setting" it should show how much time you save if those are toner off. It should show screen resolution, Bluetooth, background data, brightness, and more.
I use that only as a reference to see how much juice I can size based on the settings I have turned on.

Thanks.
Just did some comparison of different saving modes changing screen resolution and in my case FHD saves 7 minutes of battery time compared to WQHD.
So it doesn't make sense using lower resolution. It saves some battery but not that much to sacrifice the main part of the phone (the gorgeous screen).

Well when you factor in screen brightness, that 7 minutes can jump to 45 minutes easily depending on if you're going outside and such. In my Note 8i used to run fhd with a 445dpi. Smooth and crisp and looked like wqhd as much as possible.

I've never seen a noticeable difference on my Note 8. Ran it for a week on mid level resolution, saw no difference in battery life so I turned it back up to the highest resolution. Each to their own, but I don't think the difference is enough either way. Run the one you are most comfortable looking at for icon and text size.

Anyone know why Samsung lowered the dpi compared to the n8?

I'm obviously getting senile in my old age. Was supposed to say PPI.
N9 is 516 , n8 is 521.
Was thinking they'd be increasing it for VR sakes?

Note8 screen size 6,3 inch, note9 - 6,4 inch.
A bit bigger display, same resolution like old 1440p makes this insignificant difference

It's done to prevent battery drain. Increasing it to full resolution won't make any noticeable difference in image quality. As far as battery drain it's really hard to say. The display will always be displaying the full 2960x1440. It really a matter of what uses more power: 1. Having the GPU render all the possible pixels or 2. Have the GPU render fewer pixels but have to upscale the image to the full 2960x1440. I'd be surprised if the difference was really that big. Although to squeeze as much battery life out as I could I'd probably set it to FHD just to squeeze out as much as I can. The full resolution is a waste anyways.

Must be new here cause samsung has been doing this since the galaxy s8. It suppost to save battery but really ot has been show almost no different what so ever. The ui and games are rendered at 1080+ i feel a little smoother if u look hard and the phone doesnt get has hot.

Is there a soft fix for that? or is it broken any way ? or is this a common thing ?
// Im asking because this is my first S/Amoled phone.
anyone? anyone?
Look at the battery indicator, there's just 7% of juice left.
If i go under 10% of energy on my galaxy s, my screen sets itself to minimum brightness automatically and looks something like this.
Try to charge both phones to 100% and look at the screens once more whether they are equal or not.

Still 2 diffrent displays like now.
Maybe the phone was on exhibition in the sun. Phones operated differently. Other software ...

have you tryied to compare them with *#0*# testing code? A menu will appear where you can test all sensors, display, etc. and see if there is same difference within` pure RGB colours
or use this and see what are default RGB values on each phone maybe those are messed up
In the worst case, it could be - though it's pretty rare - the so called degradation of AMOLED screens. How old are those phones?
Anyway, electronics don't always behave the same. In different conditions of sun exposure, high temperatures etc... they can get to behave different, though I must repeat - such a difference is a rare thing. I'd rather check the RGB default values as @chasemyass previously stated
Cheers
I checked both things (the code, and the app) same things, same settings = different colors...
Both phones are Brand NEW!

Get it to warranty then. Let they fix it

Could be manufacturing tolerances of course. As we experienced, some phones are not even able to boot with undervolted kernels (even withou OC). And Samsung probably even knows this as the normal operation frequency of a MSM8255T is not the stock 1,4GHz but 1,5GHz. So they maybe kept some extra headroom... just in case.

Agree with that but still ftom that ss you can see one phone display it's a bit faded...who wanna use it like that? If I had that problem, I would go to warranty with it if it's hardware related

Thats why im asking.
If its hardware/display issue or is this s/amolet thing that "just is" and I cant do anything about it.
I know there is warrant for dead pixels, but didn't see any "not super colors on amoled" warrant ?!
I know samsung is well known from using diffrent LCDs on Samsung TV, that have alot of problems. Mayby they used lower quality one on this one ?
It's not that bad. Its dosn't disturbing when using - its only diffrent when they lay down each other.

My logic says that since you saw same RGB lvl`s on both phones but they look/show pictures different could be a display problem ... but that`s just my logic and we all know Samsung`s logic doesn`t work that way all the time. If that display doesn`t bother you I guess you have nothing else to do than accept it as it is ...

Note 4 Flicker

Hi guys,
I just wanted to revive the Note 4 flicker discussions that have been going on.
Basically, I wanted to know if there's any news on if PWM can be disabled yet at maximum brightness? I'm going to have a poke around with the system and see if I can do anything. But I doubt it.
I've noticed a lot of people have been stating in thread replies that it's pointless, and can't be seen by humans, I just got my Note 4, after having an iPhone 6 for two weeks. (That thing drove me up the wall). Prior to that I had a Nexus 5 and an S4. I absolutely love the Note 4 in every way, including the display, it's incredible. But the flicker is horrid, especially in my peripheral vision. A lot of people can't see it, I wish I couldn't. You guys are lucky.
A lot of people have also stated that they have 20/20 vision and can't see a thing, and pass it off as rubbish. But having 20/20 vision has nothing to do with your ability to distinguish pulses of light. I honestly think it's something to do with the brain, rather than the eyes.
And a few people just say if you don't like it, go get another phone. But yeah, as stated the Note 4 is fantastic. Love the thing. Just don't like the flicker and I'd rather solve the issue.
So yeah, that is all!
Did you try another phone? Maybe you have a faulty unit.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
They all flicker. I add pictures how display brightness work in another thread. There is on low brightness just a few lines on pixels 2-3 mm wide lit and moving at high speed from upward down direction. I wish that could be disabled but maybe amoled technology can't go low brightness with constantly lit pixel like S2 - very small brightness adjustments.
Or maybe is that battery save thing...
go to dev options and turn animations, transition and everything else off. it should eliminate your flicker. also change your background image to solid black 256 x 144.
It's not animation, it's way how screens work. It reduce perceived brightness by liting up small row of pixels and scroll it at high speed.
It probably also save energy and also screen can last longer.
Here:
S2 is solid one...

Just tested this on my Note4. It does flicker when not set to maximum (or close to maximum) brightness at a rather low frequency - much lower than screen flicker in most other PWM-based screens. This is certainly VERY bad news.
It seems the only way of fixing this is driving the screen always at maximum brightness.

But there is way, it it flawed on note. You could use filter to dim and set max brightness. But, note use top overlay over filter for spen function. Basically you capture dimed screen an in editor it dim it again. Also, spen circle is on max brightness....
All screens do this. Monitor, mobile phone, every single one. I can see it if I concentrate really really hard, but that's due to excellent vision and refresh rates etc etc. Every TV and phone i've had or looked at does this or something similar and i've had and used a lot.
Never gonna find a screen that doesn't. Try going and having a look at an Xperia Z3 lcd screen for a minute or two after using this phone and your worries will be null and void.
Not all monitors. And never full on/off state like amoled in note.
Black pixel and than white or whatever colors is displayed....
Tako look at my picture,. Note 4 in that time displayed full white background...
That why people who see flicker pwm in monitor perceive note 4 even harder...
I've never seen flicker like this before on any display. (Not taking into consideration CRTs).
And it doesn't matter how excellent your vision is. Being able to detect the PWM refresh probably has nothing to do with your eyes, let alone your excellent, perfectly spherical clear eyeball lens. I have stigmas in both eyes, everything is blurry for me and I can detect the flicker with ease. (One day I'll get glasses )
I'm just hoping it's fixable in software. Still, I can deal with it. This is like my fifth or something day with the note now, I'm loving it more every day and starting to care less about the flicker. You get used to it. *shrugs*
Are you guys still experiencing this flicker ? and have you found any solutions for it?

Yeah i found a good solution, i put it back in it's box and its for sale again.
This issue is deep into the hardware of how the display operates and cannot be modified. I'm using a Lumia right now, no nonsens device, everything is butter smooth and no crapware on it. Think i might switch for good now that windows 10 is a unified build on all windows devices, MS finally doing something good as well as win10 is free to everyone to update even on pirated versions.
Hehe ok, but did you notice flickering the whole time om your Note or just sometimes? And in all brightbess settings? I haven't notice any flickering on my device

Yeah some ppl dont see it and some do, i'm a pc gamer and when things dont run at 60fps i really see that, its the same thing with the flicker, when watching busy movies or playing games i dont really notice it, but when im browsing the internet or using whatsapp so basicly when there is a lot of white on the screen i can see it flicker, mosly on higher brightness settings. i'm really disapointed in this, its a really beautiful device and had very good things but the flicker is really a downside, id rater have a little less battery life than this flickering.
Ok i cant see any flickering on my device, but if i record the screen with the camera from another phone i can see some flickering, very strange

Yes it improves graphics performance in benchmarks but it doesnt effect games. Cuz pretty much all games support 1080p most so games already has performance improvement without anything.

Ok. I understand. I edit tittle post. Android seems to be more faster with this resolution. Recent apps loads faster comparing to 2k resolution.
I try a few days.
If I could make a slight correction, 2k is technically 1080.
4k and 2k refers to the largest of the two resolution values; 3840 x 2160 gives us 4k (3840 is approx 4000) and hence 1920 x 1080 gives us 2k (1920 is approx 2k)

Yes it can affect ui performance more than games. Ui has higher res. If you set everything to lower res cpu and gpu wont have to work hard like they are on 2k res.
This works man

Mathematically I see no flaws in what I just said; what don't you understand?
So 1440x2560 (3,7mln pixels) is same as 1080x1920(2mln px) "technically"?
in the real world, lowering the resolution from 2k to 1080p would give a big improvment in performance and battery life.
however after finding out about this trick a few weeks ago and reading more about it- the difference in battery life is negligible as the screen still powers the extra pixles, however the only difference is that the gpu doesn't have to process them.
you can use it for the extra score in antutu, but it doesn't give you much as apart from that..I haven't encountered a game/app/anything since my S4 that lagged. and especially not on my note 4.

No; if we are being pedantic, 4k should be called 3.84k and 1080p should be called 1.92k.
However, if we round 3.84k to 4k then we should clearly round 1.92k to 2k.
QHD is actually 2.56k, although that's too far from 3k to round up and too far from 2k to round down. MKBHD discusses it in his video "Oppo Find 7 Rant!" - http://youtu.be/E0_JrUNevdc
Edit: watch at 0:51

I lower the resolution to save battery and put less stress on the GPU, and I lower the DPI to make UI elements smaller because of the available screen real estate. I know if I go back to stock it would fix it, but I just want to know if anyone has a quick fix for it.

it DOES NOT save battery, actually might use a little more. all the pixels are still being used. that means, its still using the battery, the same amount, at least. i use my n6 at full resolution, and get 5-6 hours sot. no battery hacks btw.

Well yeah all the pixels are still being used, but (at least in theory) the GPU would not have to render the extra pixels, similar to how you get better performance in a game if you go down from 1080p to 720p. If it doesn't save battery then at least I'm getting better performance right?

Screen on time is bad , really bad :(

I m getting around 4-4.5 hours screen on time , Aod off , Edge off , Just wifi is on at home and its off when i go out and mobile data is on . Usage - browsing , netflix , web . Power saving mode is disabled , Brightness is around medium and resolution is FHD+ , Its been 2 weeks + since i got it.
What should i do , I see people getting way more along with way more usage than mine .

What service provider do you have ?
Are you using a dark theme? Darker colors are easier on the battery to produce on an AMOLED screen.
What are you doing during screen-on time? If you are doing resource intensive activities like using Navigation, that will absolutely kill battery. Someone having 5+ hours of screen-on time, may be doing something passive with their screens on. It's really difficult to go apples to apples in these cases.
User sewe used 1659 mAh on screen during his 7h+ run. How much is your stating is due to screen in mAh?
same here, exynos, running in performance mode, wifi & mobile data on, 6.45 on battery and 4.40 screen on time, 56% left on battery, I do turn screen brightness down a bit as I don't need it full whack when in doors
The only other factor is gonna be wakelocks , or Signal strength.

So, it sounds like you have the Exynos version. I have been hearing some stuff about shorter battery times on different variants. I think they might be Exynos related.
Are most of you using WQHD? I had an S8 Plus and then got the Note 8 and I can say from using both phones the Note 8 doesn't have as good battery life. I run my screen on WQHD and I get through most of the day. Battery life is average in my view, but battery life isn't a big issue since the Note 8 has fast wireless charging and fast wired charging and I have a portable battery so I always have something to charge the phone. I mean worse battery life was expected compared to the S8 Plus, bigger display and all with a smaller battery...
