This guide will show you how to install Android 9.0 Pie using the (semi) Generic System Image built using the official release.
What is project treble?
I would suggest checking out Android Authority's Gary explains video which goes quite well into depth.
How is it incorporated into this guide?
Well as you read from the title, we will be using a Semi-GSI, meaning we are using a ROM made for the OP5 (in this case the Mokee ROM) underneath and the GSI as the "frontend".

[0]Download everything above.
[1]MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT ENCRYPTED
- If you are: Wipe Data
- If you aren't: Well, it's always better to start clean, Wipe Data
[2] Flash the latest OOS firmware
[3]Flash the Latest Mokee Nightly ROM
[4]Flash the good old NoVerity.
[4]Boot up the System
[5]Vaguely setup the phone, I'd suggest skipping the network connection process, just let the phone think you're called John Smith, it's not that important I swear ?
[6]Reboot back to Recovery
[7]Now the fun part, in TWRP > Install > Install Image (I too wondered when I would ever use it again) > Install the extracted image from P-PR1-sGSI-Aonly.zip
[8] MOUNT VENDOR, don't forget!
Goto Mount > Check "Vendor"
[9] Install all the Post files you downloaded (1, 2 and 3)
[10] Reboot to system
[11]Now the ROM is booted, however it is not yet ready for daily use. I invite you to reboot back to recovery.
[12]Using the Advanced > File Manager, move the Google Play Services apk you downloaded from above to system/priv-app, find the old one and replace it with the new one
[13]Again using the file manager, move the Google Camera APK to /system/priv-app
[14]Flash the Camera Zip fix
[15]Flash the Lag Fix
[16](Optional but highly recommended)) Flash latest Redflare Kernel

TWRP > Reboot > System
If the boot stuck at the O+ logo, back in recovery, mount Vendor/System partitions : TWRP > Install > Flash the \02/g_ FBE_Disabler

Reboot system

When you purpose a Guide, think to post also all the rom link/credits/sources, so thank you @erfanoabdi
I don't understand the hate lack of love for this guide. I have already done this process and been running S-GSI for a bit. I find this guide to be more straightforward, with better layout, and best of all it's located in the OP5 specific forum, instead of getting buried in a generic Treble thread. It also provided some really helpful resources for fixing some bugs I've been living with. Thanks to the OP for this, and I look forward to future developments of AOSP/GSI/Treble! (Maybe soon my phone won't need to think it's a Pixel XL!)
PS - to anyone reading, I'm looking for some help with the hw keys. End goal is to have BACK as the right hw key, and APP_SWITCH as the left. Remapping BACK and APP_SWITCH keys in /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl results in both my hw keys acting as APP_SWICH even though I have them seemingly set to BACK.
I can post my file as well as the original if it's helpful.

Fair enough. edited my post to reflect. But as far as I can tell, this seems like an original piece of work. Nothing to me flags as "stolen from someone else" or anything like that.

Fairly sure answer is no. The rom you mentioned is just that, a rom, not treble based system image like described in this thread. Hope that helps!

This is correct, but neither should a ROM be posted in the Themes, Apps and Mods section, so I'm going to move it to How-To for now.
If you would like your ROM moved to the Development section, it must meet the requirements stated in the sticky titled "Device Forum Rules (Please Read before posting)". In particular, the OP must contain a link to all relevant sources as described in post #2. Once your OP is properly updated, send me a PM and it can be moved.
Thank you.

If the answer is YES, you have to insert this step in your installtion step manual and insist that the OB5 framework and MODEM needs to be flashed even though clean install is opted.

Users may be coming from other ROM.
Example: I am on crDroid. If I come to your Beta version, I assume that I have to do clean install. I have to follow the steps as below,
1. Clean wipe everything (via TWRP => data format, wipe dalvik/chache, system and data)
2. Flash the OB5 firmware/MODEM (your 59mb file)
3. Flash ROM
4. Flash GAPPS
5. Flash NoVerity (opyional) only if want to have device decrypted
Your instruction can be slightly tweaked in two parts.
(1) for users coming from official Oreo 8.0, and
(2) for users coming from other custom ROMs (like I expained above)
Am i correct in my assumptions.

(1) for users coming from official Oreo 8.0, and
(2) for using coming from other custom ROMs (like I expained above)
Am i correct in my assumptions.

Feeling with it
I am reluctant to try this ROM until moderator brings this topic to ONEPLUS 5 ROMS, KERNELS, RECOVERIES, & OTHER DEVELOPMENT.
It will give some comfort that the ROM has the sources verified. Thanks.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING ! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE OF BRICKING YOUR DEVICE.....
FOR OUR DEDICATED STOCK USERS
Made an new AROMA ROM based on the A2017G-N-B12 stock version. Like the other slim roms it’s just based on stock with some additions and option to debloat further. You can add the JOJOC Battery Tweak later on (as it gave me some troubles to implement on boot) that focuses on improved battery performance. I
It’s fully functional and tested (not on battery SOT). Smooth, no bugs. Magisk/SuperSU fully running without issues.
Hope you’ll E N J O Y !!!
Based on :
A2017G N-B12 STOCK ROM
INSTALL : ( TWRP )
When you're on another ROM, stock (or even on B05-slim,B06-slim² or B08…) and you want a clean install just follow this procedure :
Other models like A2017 and A2017U can flash this too. Only use Universal BL & your specific MODEM ! : https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=148464
IMPORTANT !!! When coming from a (treble) rom or Oreo rom beware you'll loose your data because you have to revert back to Nougat by wiping/format. When you're on STOCK rom and twrp3210 (or latest) move on to 'FLASH'
For now I'm using the 'old' school method (not yet the Labs Mod).
So follow this to prepare on 'FLASH' :
1. Boot into your twrp (let's say you're on twrp3218treble)
1a. Wipe system/vendor/data/cache/dalvik
2. Flash official twrp3.2.1.0 (or latest) and reboot into recovery AGAIN (not into system !)
3. You will see you have to “cancel” and swype and you’ll have to format again
4. Wipe : /advanced/wipe/choose data/change filesystem to EXT4
5. Then go into wipe : wipe system/data/cache/dalvik to be sure
6. continue with 3a below and so on....
FLASH :
0. In case you want to reflash your own apps, backup your personal apps with f.e. TB, ZipMe... (or whatever)
1. Make a full backup of your current device in TWRP ! (use it to RESTORE if necessary) DON’T FORGET !
2. Wipe cache / dalvik / data / system
3a For G version flash : A2017G-N-B12-bootstack : https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262903993157
3b For U and CN version flash Universal BL+your MODEM : https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=148464 ! Don't forget to flash twrp 3.2.1.0 afterwards !
4. Install : AROMA A2017X SL!M➅ DF!NR : https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262904005937
5. Choose your stuff to add or debloat, let it RUN and reboot, wait…a minute…
6. Done ! No more no less
AFTER INSTALL :
0. Use Jojoc Tweak for best battery result :
A2017X_JojocV2_SuperSU : flash in twrp
A2017X_Jojoc_magiskmodule_v2.1: flash in MagiskManager
A2017X_Jojoc_magiskmodule_v3.2: flash in MagiskManager
1. Go into Adaway/give root permission/download files etc. and update DONE!
2. Go into PlayStore/settings and check “no auto updates” ! Otherwise the Youtube app will update again to that TERRIBLE ANNOYING ADD state!
3. Check with f.e. Kernel Adiutor, when you added JoJoc Tweak, if it’s running ok and see if values are matching like here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75431784&postcount=2
4. If choosen Magisk leave it as Magisk 16.7 (other ones bootloop as known)

Preferable would be a clean flash though.
You can try but the aroma setup and endresult might differ although the initial aroma layout is quite the same.
The Jojoc module/zip has to be fashed afterwards now when you want to apply.
Do take a full twrp backup of your existing rom. You can always revert back
Many thanks for this! I decided to move over to LG V30 but want to put the Axon7 back to rooted stock & give to my wife.
hide bootloader msg zip problem
Since I'm planning on handing this over to my wife, who like things "simple" thought I would try your zip to hide the BL message at boot, flashed the zip , but it show ZTE boot screen twice, then goes right back into recovery. Any easy way to uninstall the zip, or do I need a complete do over?
thank you!

Actually yes, before I flashed the BL zip I uninstalled Magisk using uninstall zip & reinstalled 17.1, then the BL zip.
Ended up starting over, realized during Aroma that I had uninstalled apps I wanted to keep! (lol better learn to read some day)
Still not sure why BL didn't work , as I'm on a A2017G like you.
Noticed that DTTO isn't working. Is that a setting somewhere or is it actually like that always? Been a while since on stock ROM...
Thanks for the rom. Will flash it the next days. <3

Hi !
Thx for this ROM. I was using B10 slim for a long time and decided to flash this over. So far I don't see much difference besides the
security level (which is good, B10 was a great ROM).

Hmm, I'm hitting the same snag on B12 that I did on B10 months ago. Trying to enter/use Personal Dictionary just won't work. Crashes settings. Been a long time so I forgot if a reason for that behavior is known.
LG G3 D851, PAC-MAN LP ROM, MultiROM, XDA Legacy
Hit another snag. Wanted to use Button Mapper which requires Accessibility. Any attempt at enabling Accessibility (for any app) causes the ROM to restart.
I'll grab logs later if needed.
Moto G5S Plus XT1806, Lluvia OS v1.4-NATURMADE, MultiROM, XDA Legacy
i saw this b12 mod on p4da https://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=778560&st=2840#entry76984514

Hi Marc, can you flash this as a test to your PD.
As foor the ButtonMapper someone should test this (as I'm not on this one atm). Did the BM worked on G-B10 ?
What you also could do is flash the EDL G-B12 and see what happens related to the BM.

Thanks. That zip worked perfectly. I can now go into and edit the dictionary. ?
Apologies for being unclear. No issue with Button Mapper. I'm unable to activate accessibility service for any app that may require it (BM, Greenify, etc).
First one selects the app and flip the on/off toggle at upper right. Confirmation dialog pops up detailing the services needed. When selecting OK the ROM soft reboots.
Could be a "just me" thing. ?

Android Version : MIUI 10 Pie 9 Ported From MM3 Easy recovery install.
You should be having proper knowledge of flashing Custom ROM and how to Restore a phone if anything goes wrong.
Take complete backup before taking any action based on this thread. I am not responsible for any action taken by you.
I am just compiling all the information / files available on different websites into this thread, I have patched together with cyber spit, bubblegum, and tape, for a pretty much fully working Miui 10 PIE running rom. I have removed what I believe to be all of the bloat. Worked to modify a working miui pie vendor. Magisk 19.4 installer is all ready included as well as the modified boot for root access. The playstore installer is also included for a fully functioning playstore.
All Credit goes to respective developer/s included in the install.txt within the zip file. I request XDA moderator and or Developer of Respective files to let me know if I have forgotten to mentioned (give credit) their name in this thread. The Download Links are given directly from respective Developer/s.
You need the following two files to Test MIUI PIE on Mi Max 2 (Oxygen). This ROM recovery is ported from the Xiaomi MM3 with many patches and customized from various sources. This ROM maybe Stable enough for your daily use on Mi Max 2. I have access to two MM2 4/64 Global versions using a 1tb sd card one on At&t the other on Tmobile and all features I need are currently working.
1a. Treble Mi Max 2 Recovery 3.2.1 https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=5862345805528056270
1b. OrangeFox Recover 10
https://sourceforge.net/projects/orangefox/files/oxygen/OrangeFox-R10.0-Stable-oxygen.zip/download
2. MIUI 10 Pie ROM ported from MM3.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1KfWqQmi7bN_yXZfgVzxiifWuS2jDozCr
First step:
Start your phone into recovery and Flash a Treble recovery, if already not flashed. Restart into Recovery.
Click Wipe then Advance wipe and clear System, Vendor, Boot, Data, Cache, and Dalvick cache. No need to wipe internals per txt.
Second step:
Now Extract the Downloaded Rom files in Recovery backup folder. You should know where and how to Extract. (Use extract tool for android or pc then copy paste to recovery backup folder.)
Third step:
Click Restore and Select System, Boot, Vendor and Swipe to confirm. Wait for restore to complete. If any errors, Reboot recovery and try again. Or Mount the System, Vendor, Boot and try again. After Restore completes Reboot. Please allow 3-5 Minutes for first boot.
What works:
Cell Service, Wifi 5ghz/2.4ghz, Bluetooth, Torch, Camera, Fingerprint, Sound, Auto Brightness, On Screen & HW buttons.
Now verified from users : LTE , Face unlock.
What doesn't work:
Some people can't log in to Xiaomi account ( I do not use it, So I can not verify either or).
I do not have dual 4G sims so I can not verify if its working. There may be potential signal problems for some user but I didn't faced in USA with Tmobile, Or AT&T operators.
Eye protection mode/ reading mode 100% does not work, But similar apps available within the play store.
Since base MIUI PIE rom is Chinese version no Gapps included. To get Play store DO NOT flash Gapps. Run Play.Store.Installer (Included)
Guys, this is a nearly perfect MIUI PIE package for our lovely Xiaomi Mi Max 2 (Oxygen).
If I missed anything in the above, kindly let me know to include. If you make any further updates / patches that makes this ROM more stable / perfect or enables new features, please don't hesitate to message me to include in this thread.
I have an old PC running windows with 8gb max at any one given time, So if you would like to make the recovery image into a flashable zip, I'd be happy to update/add it.
If you can afford it, Im trying to save for a computer from this decade, any help is appreciated
https://www.paypal.me/LiamMcGinnisIv
If you would like to use the boot, vendor, system, or any other files, All I ask is pass on the proper credits. With this we should be able to have a fully functioning android Q in the near future (Currently toying around with fair progress in the free time).

only vendor is necessary and no need to wipe internal storage.
vendor will be restore from rom installation file.
I flashed the rom.
Every app from google playstore ask for wifi setup inorder to get installed .( To fix that change settings from download app)
Fingerprint data disappears after a reboot. Fingerprint unlock is a bit slow. Itz OK. But face unlock works quick
LTE Works without any problem.
The inbuilt keyboard is a bit weird though
Kernal used is Hardrock 3.18.134
Also, can't sign-in to MI account. (I don't need it actually)
Other than these. It is smooth.
You can flash V5 kernel

The in call volume bugs is there and will be there for every each pie rom of max 2, till it get solved by updated source code and that's not possible, so it will be there for ever..
Echo is not present for me and even I gave audio echo fix , long ago..
But the result differs , for some its completely removed the echo, for some it worked partially and they get acceptable echo that is too low , and for some it always there.. so it depends
For me there is not a bit of echo.. after my fix.. remaining issues are with source codes from MI , that is too outdated to fix these issues..
Hotspot doesn't work. USB tethering works.

Horrible built(but not now as devs told me)...
I just tried this ROM. This is the ever built tremendous ROM. Even(everything working perfect) (ignore next line) u can't see ur Google contacts even in official Google contact app. And every stock app are in Chinese language (and love Chinese language coz I m from india). Camera(now working as ppls told me) can't switch between different mods. Just role back(now on havoc 2.8 as mentioned by my new friend from xda but didn't remember his name lol sorry) to new ROM after in few hours. Plz ( do it again and again coz u devs are awesome and sorry for my review on this rom I m noob and don't know anything about dev things)( ignore all negative things from this post) don't do this again without testing custom ROM.
Thank u devs for ur jaw dropping work on custom ROMs.
Thanks a lot again.
Hello Everyone. I am using Redmi Note 9 but I cant find any Custom Roms for it. I always find same ROM for Note 9pro and 9s. Does anyone have any idea whether they will work on Note 9. I want to use Evolution X rom.
9s and 9 pro roms won't work for the normal Redmi Note 9 no.
You can try GSI (treble) roms, they work just fine aside from the brightness slider being miscalibrated.
Could be fixed by creating an overlay for it which someone has tried to do, waiting for merge: https://github.com/phhusson/vendor_hardware_overlay/pull/257
But yeah other than that it works well, see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development

Just open termux and type it. Fix slide and auto brightness too. Found it on @Merlincommunitychat telegram group.
Code:
su
setprop persist.sys.qcom-brightness $(cat /sys/class/leds/lcd-backlight/max_brightness)

Wait that actually fully fixes the slider?!
If so that's sick and I'm moving to a custom rom again
Edit: Yup, sure does, sick!

Which ROM would you recommend? I would really appreciate if you could DM it to me!
I just got this phone and am puzzled at how dead the custom ROM section is.

Custom ROMs made SPECIFICALLY for our device don't exist yet. It's a MTK chipset instead of the more common Snapdragon one, causing issues.
That said, the treble project makes systems that are cross-compatible among a variety of devices, those systems are called GSI's.
I invite you to check-out my guide at the "Installing Custom ROMs" section: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-9/how-to/faq-guides-bootloader-magisk-edxposed-t4176581

Thanks man! That's a great tutorial. Im a bit confused on where and when I flash Gaaps in the following steps "
Installing Custom ROMs
...
Step 3 - Put your phone into fastboot mode (Power + Volume Down) and link it to your PC.
Step 4 - Move the .img file you downloaded to your ADB & Fastboot (Platform Tools) folder, and rename it to system.img.
....
"
what command do I use to install gapps?
Also, unrelated, but how safe is it to flash a GSI ROM w/o having a custom recovery. I have tried flashing ROM on a phone w/o twrp & messed something, and it wasn't pleasant haha... is there some way I could mess up the steps? Perhaps by installing the wrong from (I'm using losq-v224-201017-arm64-bgN.img.xz ..that's correct right?)

You need the STOCK recovery to get into fastbootd mode, which is required to flash your GSI.
You cannot overwrite system partition with regular (blue) fastboot.
And when you install Orangefox or TWRP or anything like that, you get rid of fastbootd.
As for gapps, just get a rom with gapps.
In your case, you picked losq. Look at the name, it's arm64 which is correct and then:
- b for A/B phones (like the Redmi Note 9) so that's correct
- g means it has gapps by default (the opposite would be v meaning vanilla)
- N means it comes unrooted (the opposite would be S for superuser)

Thanks so much, mate. Good to know I don't need gapps
Btw, I saw you updated the recommended ROM to QCAS. Whichh one would you recommend? I read the AOSP is better for redmi' mediatek- so was thinking that was better for stability

All three that are in my signature are really good, you can't go wrong with any of them.
I recently moved from LOSQ to crDroid and now CAOS, and all three are similar. The main difference is the amount of customisation available.
In my experience so far:
crDroid > CAOS > LOSQ in terms of customisation
CAOS (much smoother imo) > LOSQ = crDroid in terms of performance
And personally the amount of customisation available in CAOS is more than sufficient, and animations feel a lot smoother to me.
As far as stability goes, I don't know haven't had issues with any of them.

Awesome, Looks like I'll give CAOS a go! I have always only installed LOS on any new android I get, so I had little idea about other roms. Heck, this was the first time I heard of GIS

hey sorry to bother u again. But I downloaded CAOS, but it doesn't seem to have a built in gapps version. What fastboot commands to do I use while flashing it (and presumably, something like open-gapps?)
Edit: nvm found the gapps one lol

It's the same as losq, you want arm64 bgN
B because that's our device type
G for gapps
N for no root
I suggest you to keep on stock rom firmware only.
Root it with magisk. Flash it with twrp.
And everything is fine.
