Evolution X Custom ROM for Redmi Note 9 - Redmi Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hello Everyone. I am using Redmi Note 9 but I cant find any Custom Roms for it. I always find same ROM for Note 9pro and 9s. Does anyone have any idea whether they will work on Note 9. I want to use Evolution X rom.

9s and 9 pro roms won't work for the normal Redmi Note 9 no.
You can try GSI (treble) roms, they work just fine aside from the brightness slider being miscalibrated.
Could be fixed by creating an overlay for it which someone has tried to do, waiting for merge: https://github.com/phhusson/vendor_hardware_overlay/pull/257
But yeah other than that it works well, see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-development

Just open termux and type it. Fix slide and auto brightness too. Found it on @Merlincommunitychat telegram group.
Code:
su
setprop persist.sys.qcom-brightness $(cat /sys/class/leds/lcd-backlight/max_brightness)

Wait that actually fully fixes the slider?!
If so that's sick and I'm moving to a custom rom again
Edit: Yup, sure does, sick!

Which ROM would you recommend? I would really appreciate if you could DM it to me!
I just got this phone and am puzzled at how dead the custom ROM section is.

Custom ROMs made SPECIFICALLY for our device don't exist yet. It's a MTK chipset instead of the more common Snapdragon one, causing issues.
That said, the treble project makes systems that are cross-compatible among a variety of devices, those systems are called GSI's.
I invite you to check-out my guide at the "Installing Custom ROMs" section: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-9/how-to/faq-guides-bootloader-magisk-edxposed-t4176581

Thanks man! That's a great tutorial. Im a bit confused on where and when I flash Gaaps in the following steps "
Installing Custom ROMs
...
Step 3 - Put your phone into fastboot mode (Power + Volume Down) and link it to your PC.
Step 4 - Move the .img file you downloaded to your ADB & Fastboot (Platform Tools) folder, and rename it to system.img.
....
"
what command do I use to install gapps?
Also, unrelated, but how safe is it to flash a GSI ROM w/o having a custom recovery. I have tried flashing ROM on a phone w/o twrp & messed something, and it wasn't pleasant haha... is there some way I could mess up the steps? Perhaps by installing the wrong from (I'm using losq-v224-201017-arm64-bgN.img.xz ..that's correct right?)

You need the STOCK recovery to get into fastbootd mode, which is required to flash your GSI.
You cannot overwrite system partition with regular (blue) fastboot.
And when you install Orangefox or TWRP or anything like that, you get rid of fastbootd.
As for gapps, just get a rom with gapps.
In your case, you picked losq. Look at the name, it's arm64 which is correct and then:
- b for A/B phones (like the Redmi Note 9) so that's correct
- g means it has gapps by default (the opposite would be v meaning vanilla)
- N means it comes unrooted (the opposite would be S for superuser)

Thanks so much, mate. Good to know I don't need gapps
Btw, I saw you updated the recommended ROM to QCAS. Whichh one would you recommend? I read the AOSP is better for redmi' mediatek- so was thinking that was better for stability

All three that are in my signature are really good, you can't go wrong with any of them.
I recently moved from LOSQ to crDroid and now CAOS, and all three are similar. The main difference is the amount of customisation available.
In my experience so far:
crDroid > CAOS > LOSQ in terms of customisation
CAOS (much smoother imo) > LOSQ = crDroid in terms of performance
And personally the amount of customisation available in CAOS is more than sufficient, and animations feel a lot smoother to me.
As far as stability goes, I don't know haven't had issues with any of them.

Awesome, Looks like I'll give CAOS a go! I have always only installed LOS on any new android I get, so I had little idea about other roms. Heck, this was the first time I heard of GIS

hey sorry to bother u again. But I downloaded CAOS, but it doesn't seem to have a built in gapps version. What fastboot commands to do I use while flashing it (and presumably, something like open-gapps?)
Edit: nvm found the gapps one lol

It's the same as losq, you want arm64 bgN
B because that's our device type
G for gapps
N for no root

I suggest you to keep on stock rom firmware only.
Root it with magisk. Flash it with twrp.
And everything is fine.

[Guide] Install Android Pie 9.0 (via Semi-GSI Version)

This guide will show you how to install Android 9.0 Pie using the (semi) Generic System Image built using the official release.
What is project treble?
I would suggest checking out Android Authority's Gary explains video which goes quite well into depth.
How is it incorporated into this guide?
Well as you read from the title, we will be using a Semi-GSI, meaning we are using a ROM made for the OP5 (in this case the Mokee ROM) underneath and the GSI as the "frontend".
Download Section
Latest OxyenOS version [Required]
Latest Mokee Rom Nightly [Required]
NoVerity (Encryption Disabler) [Required]
PR1 - Semi-GSI [Required]
Post GSI - 1 [Required]
Post GSI - 2 [Required]
Post GSI - 3 [Required]
Working Google Play Services apk [Required for stability]
Working Google Camera apk [Assuming you need a camera]
Camera Fix zip [Assuming you need a working camera ?]
Lag Fix(Inside this folder, called DP5 lag fix)
Redflare Kernel (Latest "Treble" build) [Highly recommended for stability]
Click to collapse
[0]Download everything above.
[1]MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT ENCRYPTED
- If you are: Wipe Data
- If you aren't: Well, it's always better to start clean, Wipe Data
[2] Flash the latest OOS firmware
[3]Flash the Latest Mokee Nightly ROM
[4]Flash the good old NoVerity.
[4]Boot up the System
[5]Vaguely setup the phone, I'd suggest skipping the network connection process, just let the phone think you're called John Smith, it's not that important I swear ?
[6]Reboot back to Recovery
[7]Now the fun part, in TWRP > Install > Install Image (I too wondered when I would ever use it again) > Install the extracted image from P-PR1-sGSI-Aonly.zip
[8] MOUNT VENDOR, don't forget!
Goto Mount > Check "Vendor"
[9] Install all the Post files you downloaded (1, 2 and 3)
[10] Reboot to system
[11]Now the ROM is booted, however it is not yet ready for daily use. I invite you to reboot back to recovery.
[12]Using the Advanced > File Manager, move the Google Play Services apk you downloaded from above to system/priv-app, find the old one and replace it with the new one
[13]Again using the file manager, move the Google Camera APK to /system/priv-app
[14]Flash the Camera Zip fix
[15]Flash the Lag Fix
[16](Optional but highly recommended)) Flash latest Redflare Kernel
Facing any Issues? Ask me here or here

A lot of people have already been doing this for a while tbh, since the developer previews with the DP/PR roms here. There's even guides on YouTube for it.
It's not AOSP Pie, it's S-GSI rom ported from Google Pixel DP/PR releases. And like said djsubstrain a lot of guides has been posted in the original topic [ROM][P][PORTED][semi-GSI] Android P Developer Preview
I purpose my tutorial from the DP4/DP5/PR1 release :
\01/ Back up your personal data, sms (with SMS Backup & Restore), etc on your computer

.
.
\06/ Don't Reboot, not needed!
.
.
\07/ Always in TWRP > Wipe "ONLY" partitions > Dalvik/Cache - Cache - System - Data
.
.
\08/ Now we will install the latest PR1 Android P (Yes!) : for more details, follow the topic
Link : https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...ment/rom-android-p-developer-preview-t3816659
For A-Only Treble Devices :
TWRP > Install > Image > Flash the \02/e_ "P_PR1_A_only.img" (extracted from P-PR1-sGSI-Aonly.zip)
TWRP > Mount > Select "Vendor" partition
TWRP > Flash the \02/f_ POST-sGSI zips from 1 to 3 in the order
TWRP > Reboot > System
If the boot stuck at the O+ logo, back in recovery, mount Vendor/System partitions : TWRP > Install > Flash the \02/g_ FBE_Disabler
.
\09/ Normally, system boot fine, but you will encounter a Setup Wizard problem (can't be finished/data restored) because some Google apps are not updated
Use the File manager and install the \02/h_ Google Play Services & Google Play Store APK
Reboot system
.
.
\10/ Now for Custom your P, you can read my post :

When you purpose a Guide, think to post also all the rom link/credits/sources, so thank you @erfanoabdi
I don't understand the hate lack of love for this guide. I have already done this process and been running S-GSI for a bit. I find this guide to be more straightforward, with better layout, and best of all it's located in the OP5 specific forum, instead of getting buried in a generic Treble thread. It also provided some really helpful resources for fixing some bugs I've been living with. Thanks to the OP for this, and I look forward to future developments of AOSP/GSI/Treble! (Maybe soon my phone won't need to think it's a Pixel XL!)
PS - to anyone reading, I'm looking for some help with the hw keys. End goal is to have BACK as the right hw key, and APP_SWITCH as the left. Remapping BACK and APP_SWITCH keys in /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl results in both my hw keys acting as APP_SWICH even though I have them seemingly set to BACK.
I can post my file as well as the original if it's helpful.

Any Hope of Custom Rom ? Thinking in selling the RM3

Hello everyone,
I've been thinking and closely watching the evolution of this phone... As things stand, i don't see any interest from devs in Red Magic 3
Im thinking in selling the phone before it starts to loose its value
What are your thoughts ?

Before you get a device, look at their previous history on xda, namely development , previous Nubia red devices didn't get a lot of love.. Most people jumped on OnePlus and pixel, or even the Poco.
I believe there will be ROMs but there don't be a huge amount and little problems that require a lot of work will probably remain.
Great device but not a lot of Devs will dive in I don't think..
Hopefully it'll explode and there will be tonnes of ROMs but I doubt it unfortunately.
Saying that, what about GSI's? Is it treble compatible? They could be your saving grace.
It's a gamble.
Trying to build one.
I am trying to build a lineage rom , need to build TWRP(almost done with it, need to test though) first as the current TWRP only supports CN ROM, the source code they have given on GIT is not so compatible for building custom ROMs, if all goes well I will be releasing it soon.

The current EU / NA Rom has a lot of missing features and bugs. Would be nice to have auto brightness, customization for home screen for the icons 5 x 6 / 4 x 7 and so on, a flat audio equalizer, custom Kernel with Battery and Performance optimization and so on

Yea potentially, if twrp isn't capable of wiping. Then you'll need to do the following.
Make a back up to your computer !!!!
Also if decryption isn't working.
Install twrp.
Push or copy the ROM to the phone .
Root of SD if you can read it.
If you can't decrypt then push to /tmp
Wipe anyway in twrp and then flash the ROM. (GSI IMG)
Then flash the stock recovery and wipe / factory reset in stock recovery.
Boot the IMG, if it doesn't boot after the stock wipe, flash twrp and push / copy the ROM to SD / /tmp
Then flash , it should boot.

If you are starting to question the question you should leave your excitement and start analyzing the phone in a more detailed manner.... Reading your comment made me write to you in a more detailed manner....
So let us begin:
-> The Auto Brightness works and does not work, there are so many times were it does not, so basically you don't have that option
-> The phone has random freezes or reboots from time to time, even if i'm on NA lastest build, no root, bootloader locked in order to sell the phone, last night it gave me some concerns when i tried to wake it up via fingerprint and it would not, i hat to restart it via Power Button and Vol Down to enter bootloader menu
-> The camera takes pictures like my ex Note 3, it should have a better sensor than mid range phones, would be cool to have a camera apk that's optimized for this device
-> Performance degradation over time, i noticed the device starting to run a little laggy before reset, now it's ok for the moment, we need a better kernel with working features like battery stand by, performance when needed and so on
-> Why should i install junk apps to have a simple customization app drawer ? This was the issue to begging with about LAG
-> Lastly, yes, we need a custom rom were people contribute with feedback of the software and constantly improve over time, if i struggle to think a little bit, i can come up with at least 3-4 more issues with this device,

[ROM]-Working MIUI 11 PIE for Mi Max 2 Oxygen [9]-[stable-ish][RedMi 4 Port]

Android Version : MIUI 11 Pie 9 Ported From MM2 Easy recovery install.
You should be having proper knowledge of flashing Custom ROM and how to Restore a phone if anything goes wrong.
Take complete backup before taking any action based on this thread. I am not responsible for any action taken by you.
I am just compiling all the information / files available on different websites into this thread, I have patched together with cyber spit, bubblegum, and tape, for a pretty much fully working Miui 11 PIE running rom. I have removed what I believe to be all of the bloat. Worked to modify a working miui pie vendor. Magisk 19.5 installer is all ready included as well as the modified boot for root access. The playstore installer is also included for a fully functioning playstore.
All Credit goes to respective developer/s included in the install.txt within the zip file. I request XDA moderator and or Developer of Respective files to let me know if I have forgotten to mentioned (give credit) their name in this thread. The Download Links are given directly from respective Developer/s.
You need the following two files to Test MIUI 11 PIE on Mi Max 2 (Oxygen). This ROM recovery is ported from the Xiaomi RedMi with many patches and customized from various sources. This ROM maybe Stable enough for your daily use on Mi Max 2. I have access to two MM2 4/64 Global versions using a 1tb sd card one on At&t the other on Tmobile and all features I need are currently working.
1a. Treble Mi Max 2 Recovery 3.2.1 https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=5862345805528056270
1b. OrangeFox Recover 10
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ora...n.zip/download
2. MIUI 11 Pie ROM ported from MM2
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1KfWqQmi7bN_yXZfgVzxiifWuS2jDozCr
First step:
Start your phone into recovery and Flash a Treble recovery, if already not flashed. Restart into Recovery.
Click Wipe then Advance wipe and clear System, Vendor, Boot, Data, Cache, and Dalvick cache.
Second step:
Now Extract the Downloaded Rom files in Recovery backup folder. You should know where and how to Extract. (Use extract tool for android or pc then copy paste to recovery backup folder.)
Third step:
Click Restore and Select System, Boot, Vendor and Swipe to confirm. Wait for restore to complete. If any errors, Reboot recovery and try again. Or Mount the System, Vendor, Boot and try again. After Restore completes Reboot. Please allow 3-5 Minutes for first boot.
What works:
Cell Service, Wifi 5ghz/2.4ghz, Bluetooth, Torch, Camera, Sound, Auto Brightness, HW buttons.
What doesn't work:
Some people can't log in to Xiaomi account ( I do not use it, So I can not verify either or).
I do not have dual 4G sims so I can not verify if its working. There may be potential signal problems for some user but I didn't faced in USA with Tmobile, Or AT&T operators.
Eye protection mode/ reading mode 100% does not work, But similar apps available within the play store.
Playstore Installer Included & Now Working. (Due to the chinese base)
Guys, this is a nearly perfect MIUI 11 PIE package for our lovely Xiaomi Mi Max 2 (Oxygen) Although MIUI 11 is still beta.
If I missed anything in the above, kindly let me know to include. If you make any further updates / patches that makes this ROM more stable / perfect or enables new features, please don't hesitate to message me to include in this thread.
I have an old PC running windows with 8gb max at any one given time, So if you would like to make the recovery image into a flashable zip, I'd be happy to update/add it.
If you can afford it, Im trying to save for a computer from this decade, any help is appreciated
https://www.paypal.me/LiamMcGinnisIv
If you would like to use the boot, vendor, system, or any other files, All I ask is pass on the proper credits. With this we should be able to have a fully functioning android Q in the near future (Currently toying around with fair progress in the free time).

In all miui based rom, In call volume is much louder than other custom roms. and also no echo issue in miui roms.
Outstanding!
Only wish there was a way to install this for use with dual boot patcher in order to test it out.
Does camera app works? I have crashes with message: "Could not find tag for key xiaomi.ai.asd.enabled".

Basically the same gsi source. But older patched boot, older magisk, and play store installer will not work with conner, yet its labeled *.24
But hey either or, flash what y'all want. If I knew someone was going to keep this updated, and work out the bugs as Xiaomi releases 11 tomorrow, I would just go back to playing with A10.
After all I don't even use these mi max 2s any longer. Was just trying to contribute to the old gang.
Lol , reason why I left.. they insult the older devs who use there time for them

Every time I flashed on my end kept crashing system (black screen sticks), odd. Its why I dumped in the chinese play store installer v3.
But nice to know its working
None of any of this could have been accomplished without you or hardrock 83.
Can we flash pietreble kernel on it?

Fixed now (On My End), working on a few adjustments, ect.
Will be uploaded today with some tweaks.
Is there a way to remove the on-screen navbar without having to enable full screen gesture? I prefer hardware buttons. And one more thing, how to disable the rounded corners? Apart from these two probs and known bugs, this ROM has been decent so far. Thanks!

Ah, nice. Thanks OP for the builds, and also thanks to @zahidm for providing us with unofficial PE up until this point!
I noticed that the downloads page offered a special PE recovery image? I was curious and looked and the instructions and they seemed different than the usual "flash using TWRP" that most ROMs use. Do we have to follow the steps on the website?

I'm wondering what's the difference between regular edition and plus edition?
and what about battery life, is there anyone tried it? please give a review.
Actually I'm on Pixel Experience Plus "unofficial" from the Cross Device Development section.
Do this Official version start from that build? Or it's a completely new project? I mean will I find everything working well with the same "plus" customizations? Thanks

I'm currently on Palladium OS, battery life is 7+ hours.
If you rooted your Android device, change your device model to Pixel you'll get unlimited photos & video uploads on Google Photos for lifetime at ORIGINAL quality.
Does any one know how to change Device Model on Op6, i have rooted but cant see model in Build.prop
Does this support customizable vibration intensity like the unofficial version?
@ipha There's no options such as vibrations settings (I have this ROM), but if I'm correct you can do it via Kernel manager (Not sure..) it's a LOS Kernel so I think that's possible.
Note 100% sure about that.
Anyone not able to install apks? I'm not able to but working through adb install

Hi @SevralT is fingerprint working on this built??
Early views on this rom.
- Setup wizard is similar to pixel experience rather a bit better.
- Double tap to wake and sleep works well. - Fingerprint doesn't work. No face ID support.
- The overall look n feel or the rom in set up wizard is bit rough and could be smooth, similar to pixel experience.
- No charging speed issues.
- problem while downloading chrome from playstore as it doesn't work. Weird but happened multiple times.
Would be great if you may also add a OTA updater as I couldn't find it anywhere unless I missed it.
Overall compared with Pixel experience ROM, this is smoother to use however needs some more polishing before I may use it.
@SevralT - This indeed is a great work man. Cheers to all your hard work. Thanks for a vanilla pixel experience for us.
FP works. If you can't register it, lock and unlock screen few times and try again

usually a bug is defined as a broken feature or a feature that doesn't work at all, the hardware has face unlock feature, but the software doesn't, it also serves as a heads up for anyone looking for ROMs to install on his device, its not common knowledge that android 12 doesn't support face unlock, although it is supported in other devices. for example, the samsung galaxy tab s7+ has just been updated to OneUI 4 based on android 12 and face unlock is working fine. so I think that a little notice and heads up won't do any harm.
Is there any ota updater?

I mean, I love Verizons network as it works great here. And, developers have already found out how to integrate Verizon into roms and have also shared their commits for it but other devs just havent integrated it. Ill most eventually move to the OnePlus 10 Pro when it comes out, especially since fewer devs are supporting OP6T now (which is understandable), so for now, back to EvoX it is.
Thanks for the info!

Thank you for the information. I hate the company, but their cell service is the best where I live, so I use an MVNO. It's sad that no current A12 ROMs support Verizon because I really like Monet and Material You, but for now I'm stuck on PE11.
@severalT you had made an awesome rom I must say this. What I am missing on this rom vs pixel experience and had like to see is the ability to use pixel setup wizard, pixel live wallpaper selection in wallpaper app and the clock widgets.
Ability to auto unlock screen when entering pin without a need to click the ok button as face unlock and fingerprint aren't working as other A12 roms.
The theming display on pixel experience is what I miss here.
Is it possible for for you to help including these here? If not I can understand however this rom is way too smoother than pE12 and I just so love it.
Pls see if you may include the above to this build as well pls
Thank you for the great work!
