Hello all,
I have the Note 8 from last year and the new Note 9 that came with the new Bixby 2.0 this year. I like how sleek and refined looking the new Bixby is this year, but it's seriously dumber than the older Bixby that's on my Note 8!
Some of the common commands I give that works on my Note 8:
Turn on/off Fast Charging
Turn on/off Fast Wireless Charging
Save my location as my home
Check for app updates in the Play Store
When I ask the note 9 to turn on/off Fast Charging, it instead goes to optimize my Battery. When I ask it to turn off my fast wireless charging, it turns off Wifi instead! It couldn't even understand anything about checking for updates in the Play Store, whereas the Note 8 could do it very well (sort of currently).
What gives Samsung? Technology and AI is supposed to be smarter, but this time it's pretty stupid to not understanding basic system commands.
Still trying to figure out which is dumber... Using bixby or posting about how dumb bixby button is. ???.
Ok, Google. Whup bixby's ass.

Bixby has its merits. I still use Google 95% of the time due to its smooth performance searching things as well as having 110% accuracy in understanding over Bixby. It's just for some of the specific functions of the phone itself that I want to see how Bixby does that made the Note 8 pretty well.
I really don't have a problem with the Bixby button since I rarely make the same mistake as the general population does with it. This post is really about the Bixby AI itself and how it became less functional than the older version.
Samsung is trying to force it on us. They know it will get better much slower, if at all, if people don't use it. Just look at Siri. Look how fast Alexa made a come up because... Well you gotta give up something to make progress orove forward.
Who would have thought 10 years ago people are paying a premium for the government to spy on them, Siri included. I could see using smart home stuff/IOT if setup properly to maximize the benefits. But most people do not and have not given thought to the many ways. (like very granular A/C and building a proper roof that doesn't trap heat or utilizing that heat to positive energy)
If Google gave up advertising I would use Google assistant more. Heck, I'd probably give in and pay something on a subscription for no ads all the way across my Google apps and Android. Not going to happen if people keep buying that dedicated stuff and putting up with ads and spying. Until then I wear an invisible tin foil hat.
guys dont bash Bixby. if they phase it out, we loose the button.

I've still not set up Bixby. The main problem is it's inability to recognize your voice.

I trained box y on the note 9 to recognise my voice. I also have a note 8 in the same room. When saying hi bixby the note 8 responds but the note 9 doesn't. I think bixby 2.0 is still in its infancy whereas bixby 1.0 on the note 8 is refined. Pity we have to use bixby 2.0 on the note 9.

I agree, I was so hoping it would be Bixby 1 but with improvements to speech recognition and a refinement. Instead, it's like a completely different, stripped out version

Hello
I just bought a note 9, and the main reason I buy notes is s-pen and bixby. Now on note 9, none of my quick commands work, I cannot get bixby voice to recognize my voice, other than 'Hi Bixby'. What use the update, if it completely disables the app? The app is all the time trying to communicate to the network, cannot connect to the network and so cannot carry out any commands.
I am seriously thinking of returning the note 9 (I got it from samsung.com), and will keep my note 8.
thanks
thanks

Bixby is terrible, like the general public agrees on, but the phone itself is not. I have both the Note 8 and Note 9, and the Note 9 is a wonderful upgrade from the Note 8. Bigger battery, better camera, and a nicer "whiter" screen.
I mainly use Google Assistant anyways, and it's a much better assistant AI anyway. On both Bixbys, it doesn't really recognize the names I tell it to call unlike Google having utmost accuracy.

I concur. Returning this phone because Bixby sucks has to be the silliest reason I've ever heard, considering that Google Assistant is available and is light years ahead of Bixby. I haven't even set Bixby up on my phone and I don't see why I would ever want to.
And perhaps there are reasons to return this phone, but people hyperventilating on the official forums (or anywhere on the internet) have to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

I am really sorry, you feel that I am hyperventilating. I was agreeing to the original post.
Secondly, whatever your reasons for not using Bixby or preferring one AI to another, that is not enough reason to make fun of others.
Thank you both for your very kind words.

Regarding the hyperventilating comment, I wasn't talking about you, but rather the people who are hyperventilating on the official forums. That was in reference to your comment regarding people "never buying a Samsung again."
As to your second comment, nobody was making fun of you, certainly not me. If you feel slighted, please point out where in my post you found offense. Life becomes very difficult when one is overly sensitive. Did I think your overall complaint was ridiculous? Absolutely. Nobody, and I really do mean nobody buys this phone because of Bixby. It offers no additional functionality over the built in Google assistant, and most people don't even set it up. I haven't seen a single review of this device that even mentioned Bixby and useful in the same paragraph. It is just like the old SVoice that Samsung forced on all of us on their older phones, and nobody ever used it. But by all means, feel free to never buy another Samsung device again. Just don't expect Bixby on anything else other than Samsung. With an apple phone you'll get siri and Google assistant, with Samsung you get Bixby and Google assistant, and every other phone comes with just Google assistant.
Look, I get it. Nobody showed you Google assistant, you set up Bixby and were used to using it. Do yourself a favor, set up Google assistant, turn on the "OK Google" voice command, and whenever you need something, say "OK Google" and tell it what you want. Works when the phone is locked, works when you're driving, works completely hands free, just works. And then metaphorically toss Bixby into the garbage where it belongs.

I never commented on the "never buying samsung again" post.
As for bixby, I use it for device maintenance commands mostly. And I have setup google assistant, and use that for most internet related queries etc. So I use both on Note phones, but on my tablets, I use google assistant.

Wait, so you took offense to a reply I made regarding a post that wasn't even yours? I guess I should have been more careful and checked that the person offended by what I wrote wasn't even the person whom I replied to, but you can surely understand my presumption. I mean, I even quoted the posted I was replying to.
But OK, I'll bite. What exactly do you need Bixby to do? What device maintenance commands does it help you with.
This is from the original post:
- Turn on/off Fast Charging
- Turn on/off Fast Wireless Charging
- Save my location as my home
- Check for app updates in the Play Store
For the first 2, my only question is why? How often do you need to toggle it? I've had a GS 7 Edge for 2 years and not once did I need to disable fast charging. No battery degradation either. The 3rd one needs to be done only once I presume. The last one updates automatically over wifi once you are charging. If you don't have it set up that way, you should. And just about everything else is quickly accessible through the notification menu. I am genuinely curious, maybe there is a compelling reason for me to set up Bixby instead of having that dedicated button be a nuisance that gets accidentally pressed all the time.

Hi
No, not any of the above maintenance tasks.
I use (used) bixby for - (at night time)
changing power saving to mid
lowering volumes
cleaning memory
clearing space
The thing is I could put all the above commands in one quick command, and with bixby wake-up with voice pwd, Bixby would perform these without me having to even touch the phone. Of course, now with samsung removing the wake-up with voice pwd, I have to physically unlock the phone.
Yes, I have activated the do not disturb (time-based), so maybe the volume command was not needed
Now, since bixby is no longer working as it was previously, I did find something else to replace that. I tried using IFTTT, but that didn't have the above commands, only completely mute the phone, which I don't want.
I am using routines, which is available through Good Lock on samsung app store (not in google play).
thanks
Although some people have a use for Bixby, I'm not one of them. I tried to remap the button with BX Buttons (?), but it didn't work for me.
I was using Package Disabler Pro on two previous Samsung phones and tablets, so I thought I'd try it on the Note 9. As discussed elsewhere on this forum, that version of the app doesn't work on the Note 9. I bought the recommended Package Disabler Pro + from policedeveloper and it worked fine on the Note 9.
Using the new Package Disabler, I killed all the Bixby apps, which made the button totally inert. I wish I could have remapped it, but at least now I don't accidentally bring up Bixby all the time.

Hi people I've got unlocked note 9 on BTU but been having problems with Google assistant not constantly opening with my voice even thou I've redone the voice loads of time. Also when Dolby atmos is on when i say ok Google it will open up and then it will type *ok Google* again as if that's what i was saying to it. Anyone encountered those problems? And biometrics not always recognising me 100% of the time.
Also have GA not always hearing me and having to repeat the command. Biometrics, iris and face, again not being 100 % reliable so I just left the fingerprint active. Interesting about Dolby, with it off ok google not typed on screen?

I'm hoping it's the 8.1 being a little buggy. No when its switched off it don't write ok Google on the screen.
I'm having the exact same issue, with it typing OK Google also. Wasn't aware this was connected to Dolby Atmos but will try and test with it on and off.
This is definitely a Note 9 issue as previously with my note 8, the Google assistant would respond quickly from across the room and accurately.
The Note 9 seems to have a 2 second delay and doesn't accurately pick up what I'm saying the majority of the time. Could this be a microphone issue?

Ok just another question as my assistant is installed why does Google play show install Google assistant?
Hi there, I bought a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro 6/128 recently. I instantly noticed that if I'm using full screen gestures I have some troubles doing WhatsApp audio recordings. Single press is recognized on the bottom corners, but if I do a long press, my system doesn't recognize it.
I thought it was a gesture's "feature", but I have investigated a little and I found an issue in that part of display, even with gesture disabled (so, using softkeys).
I didn't find anything about this issue, but it's very annoying because I am not able to do WhatsApp recordings, because long press on recording button isn't recognized at all.
I also uploaded a video in which I show the issue
Tell me if you have the same problem, or if there are any solutions.
Single press works ok in the bottom corner, but long press isn't recognized
Link to the video:
https://youtu.be/cSIi8m2WwyA
I can confirm that same issue is present on my phone. But I would say its rather a bug with MIUI/Whatsapp as I can confirm that touch is working perfectly on that part of the display in CIT or Other apps.
Try it. A single press would work very well, but long press on the same area won't be recognized
You can check it with any app that lets you draw/test touchscreen
I've noticed this on my device too. Is it a hardware or a software issue, if its software issue can anyone confirm if this issue exist on custom roms too.

I'm using a custom ROM since April (EvoX) and I can confirm you that the issue still persists. Don't know if it's vendor related, or it is an hardware issue.
The only good thing is that with Android 10 and gesture bar (on miui 12 and custom ROM also), it's easier to record voice messages since gesture bar takes 1-2 mm of the corner, so less "defected" space for touchscreen
Hello guys,
i hope theres not already a thread on this topic as i searched for one but didn't find one.
My Mi 9 always turns the camera on whenever I'm calling someone. I mean always. And several times per call, about once a minute i guess. I always have to turn my display off with the power button when it happens but somehow the camera opens again after some time.
My AI Button is completely turned off so that's not the problem.
Any guesses? It's really annoying.

In this case then, remove the POCO launcher and see if the problem goes away. Next thing if this doesn't help is to remove the Gcam. I strongly suspect the combination of the non-standard launcher and the non-standard camera. Even if it is the Xiaomi camera that starts the problem can still be the Gcam as with such non-standard ports they may cause all kinds of problems. I have used it myself and had to remove it.
I have the same problem. I have found that it is connected with AI button. You have to unbind anything related this button. I have no problem with camera app since then.
Looks like Xiaomi needs to check what is triggering AI button actions.
I have the same problem. I havent nothing on the phone - only stock firmware and software. Camera activate durign normal call, sometimes camera activating when phone is laying on the desk and someone talking near desk. When i have end call - i cant turn off call because it is in background and my galery have abotu 5-9 new photo taking from my ear :/
Same experience here. Miui 12.0.1 global. QFAMIXM. it was the same on miui 11. It turns on during calls and sometimes when laying on the desk or in the car. Is there a solution yet ? I unbound all the camera shortcuts/buttons but nothing changed.

Latest Firmware installed, stock camera, stock caller
Same thing here, happens also with google assistant (while being disabled in google and normal settings, not mapped to the AI button), both camera and google assistant pop up during phone calls, switching back and forth every 3-4 seconds, also happens when i get bad service to the point where the whole phone is unusable. Does anyone have an idea if xiaomi or someone else could fix this? Hoping to find an answer to this problem soon.
Best regards, Max
Disable voice assistance under Apps -->Apps-->(three dots button ) --> Default Apps --> Voice assistance --> none
This is unfortunately hardware problem. I had the same issue (with AI and also later with volume).
When the phone changed its temperature (f.ex. during the call or in car in front of the AC vent) it's starting the "show".
Warranty service should help
Hi all,
Been quite a few years since I posted anything here!
I have just received my pixel 5 and have noticed that dead center of the notification tray when in portrait, there is a flickering dot, especially in low light it flickers white or if not flickering leaves a faint grey dot over whatever is on the screen (stays in the same place even if I rotate the phone or watch a video)
If I reboot I can't see it for a minute or so until it then appears.
Factory reset doesn't solve it.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking it might be the ambient light sensor under the display but it is really irritating, possibly mine is faulty?
Cheers!
It's the underscreen proximity sensor.
I get that it is the proximity sensor but, It is flashing constantly - I spoke to google and they said that it should only show when in a call - it is flashing even while watching YouTube - does anyone else get this same behaviour?
Not showing on mine
I have it constantly when KinScreen is running, I saw someone having it with cpuz
I hadn't noticed until I saw this thread. I did wonder where the proximity sensor was. It's only visible when on a phone call for me.
Is the light sensor under the screen also? You can usually see that on a lot of devices when you tilt the screen slightly.

I get that it is the proximity sensor but, It is flashing constantly - I spoke to google and they said that it should only show when in a call - it is flashing even while watching YouTube - does anyone else get this same behaviour?

Mine only shows when on a call
You probably have some apps using it. Possibly something like Tasker that happened to have proximity sensor based profiles configured, etc.
Mine went mental during Google Play downloading all my apps on initial phone setup. Then it went out and I've not seen it since.

It's a software bug. I read about it on reddit and twitter yesterday. Did you move your data from your old phone using the cable?
To fix it you should factory reset, then migrate your old data using WiFi, not cable, don't restore or restore your apps manually (at least until you make sure it's fixed).
If that still doesn't work, check if you have an app called HomeAssistant (HASSIO) installed. There's one report of that causing it. To fix that you need to disable the proximity sensor on the assistant app itself.
Sources: here, here, and here.
I got the same Problem after installing notifybuddy. There must be some Bug where the sensor gets started the moment an overlay is shown. I can reproduce the Bug over and over again. Install notifybuddy and Start the App give all permissions and than Pull down notificationscenter (its an overlay). To solve the Problem, uninstall notification Apps That are using overlays.
Mine is working fine. Only during a call or listening to voice messages.

Hit the nail on the head there!
It was the Home assistant app causing it (even though it had installed after restoring from my backup, I had never opened it yet since having this phone). Uninstalled home assistant and it has stopped flashing!
Thanks so much for the replies all!
Have this issue on my one too...which is the home assistant app? Deleted the "Home" but that doesn't seem to have solved the problem.

Go to the gestures options (don't know exactly where the specific one is located, it could also be at the Digital Wellbeing settings) and disable the Flip to Shh one. See if that helps.

The Home assistant is a 3rd party home automation app that I had previously installed - if you don't use it, I'd check for any other apps you have installed for something that might be using the proximity sensor.
Couldn't find that was causing the issue. After a restart it would be fine but once unlocked and apps started loading it would go crazy. Went through all my apps but couldn't find the cause so just reset my phone. Hopefully it doesn't show up again.
Seems to.be software issue so hopefully google will do something about it

It really shouldn't matter if something is using the proximity sensor. It shouldn't ever be visible.

That's incorrect. A quick Google search for "S20 proximity sensor blinking" will yield results that show otherwise. Maybe go to YouTube instead as there's quite a few videos there on it. The Samsung subreddit has an influx of posts, it seems, for almost every device they've released over the past couple of years because folks aren't used to seeing it. It's visible under the display on my S20 Ultra and I had it on my S10 plus also.
Now of course there's bugs where it's blinking on the Pixel 5 when it shouldn't, but is it supposed to be visible when an app is using it legitimately? Yes.
Edit: It just dawned on me that YouTube vids wouldn't be the best example of this because they use cameras to video the proximity detector. Everything else stands though. Google searches and Samsung subreddits are ripe with examples though.

If what you are saying is true then why can't you see the sensor flashing on any phone when in a phone call or when the "Flip To Shhh" feature is enabled with just your eyes?
And if that is true about the Pixel 5 then there will be no way to use the "Flip To Shhh" feature without always seeing the sensor flashing which I can do with my Pixel 2 XL.
Here is a video of my Pixel 2 XL taken with the camera on my tablet. You can see that the tablet picks up the flickering sensor when "Flip To Shhh" but the sensor goes off when I turn the feature off. That's because the feature uses the proximity sensor to work. However, the flickering is ONLY picked up by the camera on my other device. I can't see it with just my eyes looking at the phone even though the sensor is active.
