Moto Z3 Play Dual Sim - Moto Z3 Play Questions & Answers

I purchased a Moto Z3 Play unlocked version from best buy a few months back. I was wondering does anyone know if this version has the hardware already inside for the dual sim tray and it would just be an issue with finding a dual sim tray that would fix in the phone?

I have the same question, for such a nice phone, it is pretty dead in this area of the forum.
I noticed there is a disabled app in the phone called "Dual Sim Settings"
The XT1929-6 variant is a dual sim, while mine the XT1929-4 is sold as a single sim phone.
I would think if it has the hardware for dual sim, the XT1929-6 sim tray would work?

I have verified yes it does have dual sim hardware.
You can get the sim holder here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Sim-C...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I tried this mod, https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75790699&postcount=713
I was able to have the phone see both sims and the phone numbers, a Verizon Sim, and Google Fi sim. Only problem is that I had no sound at my end, or the person I called end.
Looks like a worthy project that needs some work.
Developers, I would gladly pay to have this feature working. :good:

Sweet, thanks for the information. I have sense moved to Japan where they sell the Moto Z3 play that comes with dual SIM card. Where I am using both Google fi and Japan mobile provider.
I do have issues calling out some times, and can't hear anyone on the other side but they can hear me. I am waiting for the pie update you see if it fixes any issues with dual SIM.
Besides that I use Google fi pretty much only for data, and my Japanese number for voice which works perfect.
I really do love this phone and it's probably the best phone I have ever owned.

I am thinking it is not possible to have 2 google fi sims, because you need an app with the email attached to the phone number, and can only be logged into one email at a time. Once I decide that Google Fi is good enough for my rural area, I can get rid of Verizon, and get a real dual sim phone, and us Fi and a GSM carrier.

is it possible / room enough to use a dual sim ?

i like to know if there is room enough above the sim to use a duosim from duosim.xcom ?
Anyone an idea?
come on , is there any room to place a dual sim ?
Oh, wow. That stuff looks cool. Now I'm curious too.
Yes, there should be room enough.
So, I've tried it and yes it fits but it doesn't work.
The TD has 8 connections to the SIM card and the Magic Sim (www.dual-sim.nl, 16th cut version) has 6 connections. It is 16th gen card which they propose to use for smartphones....
It works on my old Nokia 6021. This phone has 6 connections to the SIM Card.
The cutted SIM Card doesn't work anymore on the TD so I have to purchase a new one. I have sent a mail to dual-sim.nl. I will post the outcome.
number of contacts is irrelevant. Only 6 contacts are used for sim cards, the last 2 are RFU (reserved for future use).
If i read you right, after you cut up your sim card it doesnt work anymore? even directly in the phone without the dual sim? If thats the case your broke your sim while cutting it. The dual sim may or may not work still.
The cutted SIM doesn't work in the TD but does work in the Nokia 6021.
The Magic Sim doesn't work in the TD but does work in the Nokia 6021.
So, my assumption was that the cut is the reason that the SIM card doesn't work anymore on the TD. Strange that it still works in the 6021??
No, there is an incompatability between the magic sim and the touch diamond it sounds like. Only 6 contacts on the sim are used, the last two do nothing.
So if it works fine in your 6021 and not the TD, then its the magic sim that has the problem.
What error do you receive? no sim/insert sim?
SIM card is seen, Magic Sim program is available in teh TD but it doesn't register to the network.

Hmm thats really strange. What happens when you manually register?
It lists the available networks. KPN (my provider) in one of the them. If I try to connect to this netwerk the same thing occurs: can't register... I can try another network (roaming)?
Hmm that means the IMSI is not being passed corectly.
Sounds like a bug with the multisim itself. Another brand might work.
Not all new USIM cards works fine.
Put your phone on GSM mode instead of WCDMA or Auto.
Then the Dualsim works fine.

Due to your questions I tried it again and came to the conclusion that the cutted SIM card didn't work in the TD because it didn't contacted completely. I also saw a different kind of slide for the Magic Sim which leads to a better contact of the Magic Sim to the TD and now everythong works!!
Thanks someone1234 for taking the effort ask further

Thats great! no problem.
Does the Dual-sim 16th gen. non-cut version also fit into the TD?
I don't think my employer will appreciate it if I would cut my KPN sim-card of my company phone...
anyone tried the 20th gen dual sim adapters yet?

Verizon fail? Or faulty Nexus 6 sim slot?

I got my nexus 6 the other day, finally ready to activate it on Verizon. I had a spare nano sim from the iphone 6 I sold. I called in and gave Verizon my sim ID and the IMEI of a spare iphone 6 at work. They told me it was activated so I stuck my sim in and booted it up. The setup wizard tells me still to insert a sim card. When I go into settings-cellular networks, search for and select Verizon, it tells me that the sim doesnt allow a connection to this network. I feel like though that my phone isnt even recognizing the sim (says no sim on the lockscreen). I figured what the heck, and decided to tell them that I have a nexus 6 and to see if they can force the imei in. They say they can do it so I give them my N6 imei. Even after that its still showing the same messages, and they then tell me that it could be the nano sim that im using (that came in the box with an iphone 6 from work) will not work in my phone and to grab one from the store.
My questions are:
Has anyone had issues using a sim from an iphone 6?
Does it still show the "No sim" message even if you have an unactivated sim installed?
Has anyone gotten these similar messages when selecting Verizon form the cellular networks?
Maybe you can go into a Verizon store and tell them your sim card stopped working and see if they give you a new one. Say it was working with your Nexus before but then it stopped and see what they do.
Was the sim from the iphone 6 ever activated? SIM cards can typically only be activated once.

It was not. It was bought as a replacement phone so an already active sim was used in it. I had it laying on my desk (although come to think of it the phone was bought as an "upgrade" so that may be possible.). I've never heard that they can only activate it once though.
I installed Sim Card Manager and it tells me the Sim Serial Number is unavailable. Does anyone have a non activated sim they can toss in for a sec to test and see if it stills says no sim card on the lockscreen or shows the sim serial in that app?

[Q] Dual sim adapter support for Nexus 6 (STK apk)

Hi everyone,
I know this is an obscure one and I may be the only one who wants this sort of thing but I live in the mountains and like to use T-Mobile but also keep a Verizon (PagePlus) SIM on hand with a cheap plan as sometimes I have to enter T-Mobile roaming areas and need more data than is allotted for roaming use.
Anyway, I have a Verizon Moto X (XT1060) and a dual sim adapter which works awesome (i.e., I can switch back and forth between T-Mo and Verizon service without rebooting using the Sim ToolKit (STK) app, which pops up when the phone sees the dual sim adapter installed).
I've installed the dual sim adapter in my Nexus 6 (Play Store unlocked version) and while the Sim Toolkit does seem to pop up once the adapter is inserted (and the T-Mo SIM seems to work still - see attached screenshot) it then crashes when trying to switch between sims and disappears from the launcher altogether (you can try and resurrect it via a "Activity" in Nova Launcher but it still doesn't work and just says the app isn't installed). In doing some research it seems like the STK apps in AOSP ROMs don't work very well (which might explain why this scheme works well in the Moto X) but I was curious as to if anyone has had any experience with this problem.
Since the Nexus 6 has such unbelievable cellular radio support across pretty much any network, CDMA and GSM/LTE alike, it seems like it'd be a great platform for the use of a dual sim system, which is why I'm kind of surprised it wasn't a dual sim phone to begin with...expecially since Android 5.1 is allegedly adding dual sim support but I think that may be mostly just a GUI to facilitate switching more than anything else.
I'm running the May 14 Euphoria 1.1 (OFFICIAL-20150514) with baseband MDM9625_104446.01.02.98R. I've tried a the .95 baseband as well, to no avail...and rebooting after switching SIMs doesn't seem to work either (and neither does just "waiting" a minute or two). I've also tried the stock ROM and it doesn't seem to work either...same sorts of issues. Finally, I should concede this might work better with a GSM / GSM SIM situation as opposed to a GSM / CDMA/GSM situation so perhaps it's a lost cause.
So yeah I just thought I'd throw this up in case anybody had any ideas on how to make this work.
No idea how, but out of interest, which adapter have you got? I'd like one.

Hi! I got mine on Amazon...XDA won't allow me to post a URL but the name of the accessory is "LOPURS 2 in 1 (Dual SIM Card Multi-SIM Card + Tray Holder) for iPhone 5/5S/5C(Dark blue)." Even though it's for iPhones allegedly it does seem to work ok on the Android platform as well (at least, on my Moto X).
It's definitely weird looking but with a case around the Nexus it seems to fit alright.
Here's one for the Samsung Galaxy S5 on Amazon, but seems there's quite a few different ones to choose from:

Curious with the 5.1 update if this will work natively. It's been advertised that dual sim support is built into 5.1.
What's your experience? Any updates?

Unfortunately the adapter doesn't work with 5.1 or 5.0...one is able to launch the 'Sim Cards' activity (this gets you to the new SIM Cards settings menu in 5.1) via Nova Launcher by setting up an Activity widget but since (I think) the adapter can only work with one SIM at a time (it seems to block one or the other altogether depending on which is selected) the new functionality in 5.1 appears to not be useful in working with the adapter...I think it'll only work with phones that are dual-SIM by default.
I accidentally destroyed my last adapter (they're extremely delicate, and are hard to install with SIM tray-type phones) so I'll try this again once I get a new one using the Android M developer preview...fingers crossed!
Thanks for the update! 'Preciate it.
So...this can be marked resolved. It turns out that the Nexus 6 accepts the dual SIM adapter just fine (takes a reboot or two, but it eventually settles in and works great) and I successfully used it with two T-Mobile US SIM cards. The issue was the Verizon SIM containing some sort of CDMA code that was (I'm guessing) fouling up the changeover and crashing the adapter's firmware and/or the STK app. The odd thing is that it did work on my Moto X XT1060...but after trying again I noticed that voice support never actually worked on the Moto with the SIM adapter installed (nor did eHRPD or 1X data - only LTE worked) so it appears that CDMA just isn't compatible with the adapter(s) I've been using. I did see that MagicSIM offers an adapter that's allegedly compatible with CDMA but I'm a bit skeptical honestly and these adapters are just too delicate to spend $30-$40 on.
So, in conclusion, this functionality is absolutely do-able but it requires two GSM SIM cards as opposed to one GSM and one CDMA/LTE.
In any case it'd be totally awesome if LTE/CDMA-GSM changeovers could be accomplished with a different adapter...so if anybody ever has any luck with that please post! Thank you for the replies.

With the GSMx2 sims, how much functionality did you get? Could you receive calls on both numbers? Did you get a prompt when dialling which number to call from?
Unfortunately you only get very basic functionality. All the adapter is capable of is switching between the SIMs...once it's switched to one or the other it can only see that one SIM. You can set it to automatically switch back and forth in time intervals but I bet that can get really annoying sometimes if you're in the middle of a call or web browsing session or something...not sure if the adapter is smart enough to know not to interrupt a call or download with a switchover...I bet not!
I know that actual dual SIM phones can do what you describe but unfortunately none that I've been able to find have the vast frequency support of the Nexus 6 so it's kind of a conundrum...I really wish Google had made the Nexus a dual SIM setup...big missed opportunity IMO.
But in any case the adapter can help if you're a frequent traveller or have a work and personal phone or whatever and you don't wish to swap SIMs all the time...or if you're like me and just need two carriers to fill in each others' coverage gaps and can use Google Voice to route your main number to both carrier numbers.

That wouldn't be too bad I suppose as long as a reboot isn't required. I forward work to personal anyway and just turn work phone on when I need to make a call.

Can't find sim card

I just bought a used Nexus 6. It works well with the sim card from my Verizon phone (Moto x 2nd gen) but I'm trying to get Project Fi to work. I have received two sim cards from them and both are not recognized at all on the Nexus 6. I know it can read sim cards because my Moto X Verizon sim card works in it. I've called Project Fi and they are no help. The phone always says "No sim Card" at the top. I read where people who were on Project Fi with a Nexus 6 and upgraded to a Nexus 6P or 5X had to get a new sim card because their old one wouldn't work. Are there two different sim versions? Maybe the one they send me is the new on and I need an older one? I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated.
Never mind, I figured it out. I am in a place with weak signals which is one of the reasons I like Project Fi for Wifi calling. Anyway, all I had to do was drive down the street and the sim message went away. I guess it needed a strong signal to the towers to configure the sim.

Anyone tested Verizon support for this phone

I know the XZ2 Compact supports verizon, I just wanna know if you pop verizon sim in xperia xz2, if it will have signal or volte?
Trying to figure that out myself. Specs are the same so I don't see why it won't other than a couple folks saying it won't.

Ended up picking up the compact today and popped the sim in from the Essential. Verizon service works fine on it with volte working perfectly. No full size in stock, don't think they even ordered any. Best Buy.

I tried it with a H8296, first, second (both with working T-Mobile sim), and only sim. No go.
Put the Verizon sim back in my pixel 2, and fired right back up on Verizon.
Has anyone tried this after installing the Android P beta on the XZ2? Curious to see if that magically lets Verizon work. (So irritating that it doesn't regardless...)
Message from a Verizon rep:
Please note that the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact model certified for Verizon is model H8314. The dual SIM version H8324 is not compatible.

You rock!!
Honestly it should work fine if you have Volte enabled on your account. For example, the Mi Mix 2 works perfect on Verizon and is not Certified on the network. It just has the appropriate band support (as well as CDMA in this case). However, I had no problems getting Volte working on the Mix 2 despite it not being "certified". I'm going to purchase the XZ2 Premium and try, but it would be great to hear some success here as well.
About what the rep said though, most normal Verizon reps know very little about getting phones on the network. I'd recommend at least getting transfered to an upper tier troubleshooting agent.
You may have to call Verizon to get support on it, but it should just recognize the bands just by popping the already activated Sim in. Maybe toggle the network settings in the options to "Global" or LTE preferred. Volte will be the only obstacle really being that it has all of the LTE bands.
Which is the US variant with support for Verizon LTE bands, H8216 or H8296 or H8266??
Ok guys so I purchased a xz2c (H8314) from Best Buy and it won’t commect to Verizon service for me. It connects briefly when I start phone and when I turn on/off airplane mode. Then it goes back to network service or emergency calls only. I’ve tried several times with tier 1, tier 2 Verizon reps, when to store, went back to bestbuy and spoke with Sony and nothing Is getting my phone to connect. Please help.

Hello TPlatt, I've been trying to follow your posts on a variety of threads. Before you potentially flash another country's firmware on your device, could you review/answer/do some of the following?
Pre-1) This question is probably better served on the sony xperia xz2 compact xda forum rather than the xz2 forum as this issue is mostly resolved for the compact. Search for "HD Voice" in the xz2 compact forum.
1) Did you ever get your phone working on verizon before you started playing around with it i.e. rooting/flashing other other firmware?
-I don't know if this has anything to do with your issues, just curious.
2) Do you have a data only sim or a line+data sim?
-Again, I don't know if this has anything to do with your particular situation, but the general solution of enabling HD voice either through Verizon support or your account through the Verizon website might depend on this. If you have a data only sim, I suggest you find someone with a full Verizon sim and have them finish the activation for you (HD Voice enabling) so the device can be properly show up on and be configured on the Verizon network, before switching back to your data only account.
3) When you were talking with the verizon techs, what transpired?
-I'm assuming you gave them your imei or meid number (I don't remember which one was necessary) so they can whitelist the device and assign it to your account.
Best of luck? If you believe you cannot get your phone to work because of flashing you did, maybe get a swap from BestBuy? I also got my xz2c from there, working on verizon, and waiting for the bugs to work themselves out before rooting my phone.

Wow so sorry didn’t realize I was in xz2 and not the compact. Guess that’s what I get from using small phone to research
So my mother was in a no LTE zone with the US variant of the XZ2 compact. Earlier she had data and phone service, but once she got back to the same place with data and service the phone wasn't connect. She had to restart her phone to get it working again. Is this common or is there something wrong with the service?
