I just bought a used Nexus 6. It works well with the sim card from my Verizon phone (Moto x 2nd gen) but I'm trying to get Project Fi to work. I have received two sim cards from them and both are not recognized at all on the Nexus 6. I know it can read sim cards because my Moto X Verizon sim card works in it. I've called Project Fi and they are no help. The phone always says "No sim Card" at the top. I read where people who were on Project Fi with a Nexus 6 and upgraded to a Nexus 6P or 5X had to get a new sim card because their old one wouldn't work. Are there two different sim versions? Maybe the one they send me is the new on and I need an older one? I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated.
Never mind, I figured it out. I am in a place with weak signals which is one of the reasons I like Project Fi for Wifi calling. Anyway, all I had to do was drive down the street and the sim message went away. I guess it needed a strong signal to the towers to configure the sim.

So I sold my Moto X on swappa and had some issues with the buyer activating the phone. They kept getting a message that said "Sim card from unknown source" with a Verizon sim. I know this happens with sims from other carriers but not from Verizon sims. The phone has a clear IMEI and the account is paid and clear. I recently switched to tmo and thought the porting process was initially the problem. Could it be there is some other hold up on Verizon's end that is preventing the phone from being activated with another account? The phone was working perfectly prior to sending it off and I switched about a day ahead of mailing it out. I don't have access to a verizon nano sim (or account) anymore to test the phone either.
Currently running 4.4 rooted with WP disabled using jcase's method for root and WPNOMORE. Its factory other than that though. I didn't add any user data prior to mailing out and it remains that way. The whole situation has me stumped on what's going on. Do you guys think using RSDlite to go back to a stock 4.4 or 4.2.2 to reroot will fix the issue? I do have access to an ATT nano sim (buddy has a motox) but I don't know anyone with a nano sim from verizon to test the phone. Any help would be great because I'm basically sitting on this phone and have zero use for it.
A new buyer will need to take it to Verizon to get a new SIM. Verizon will do this for free. Even though it seems trivial, they won't put the new SIM onto another account.
Based on my experience with buying a Moto X via Swappa.
Buyer said they tried several new sims and it still had the error. I'm going to see if I can test with my friends iphone5 sim and see if there are any issues. Otherwise I guess no choice but to rsd back to stock or something. Maybe reflash radios.
So I just got my N6 (finally) and I just started to activate it on Verizon.
I'm running into a problem though, it seems the IMEI isn't registered on Verizon and it's failing whenever I try and put in my N6's IMEI. I've worked around this by activating an iPhone 6 on my line and then switching sim cards. I'm not sure if this is the right process, since I've never actually used an unlocked phone outside of the verizon network. (I bought from the GPS)
If anyone could help, that'd be great!
I didn't have to do anything with the IMEI. I took my sim, stuck in it and powered on. It took a few mintues the first time but I didn't even to adjust APN settings or anything. I did have to go in and tell it use LTE for CDMA preference as it defaulted to 3G for some reason, but that was it.
What does your Verizon account say about it? For instance mine still says I have an iPhone 6 registered, even though I'm using the sim in the Nexus.
Based on other threads I am reading it looks like the nano SIM from an iPhone will not work
I had verizon send me a nano sim. Called in when it got here and activated the sim. Put the sim in my nexus and it worked fine. It does not show a device type in my verizon

Yup, it shows up fine now. Just shows a generic device or non-vzw device.
Finally got my nexus to work. Had to get a new sim. My nano sim from my iPhone couldn't establish a data connection so they just gave me another and activated it using my iPhone IMEI and then put it back in my nexus. Worked just fine. Said they had never seen the error it was giving me. Was pretty strange.
Could I link my g2 imei to the nano sim and then insert it into the Nexus?

Nah, they work just fine. My primary line nano sim from my iPhone worked in it. Just had another nano sim from an iPhone that had something wrong with it. So you definitely don't need a special nano sim for Verizon.

That is what they had to do for me in store. They can't activate the nexus in store BC the imei isn't in their system so they linked my iPhone 6 imei to a sim and then it worked fine.

Didn't have to stick it in your iPhone 6? I might cut my sim tonight. Because I don't feel like waiting really haha.
They did put it in my 6+ before swapping back to the nexus. Granted you may not have to do that, necessarily. I would try it out and see before you cut your current sim.

Coming from a micro. If need be I'm sure I could use a demo phone
I just received my N6 today and went through this for 90 minutes with Verizon. Here's the definitive deal (as of today).
If you bought the phone from Google Play or Motorola, you must have an activated SIM to get the phone working. If you try to call and have VZW add the device, it is not in their database (as of today) and they cannot add it at any level as a new activation. I went through two supervisors and two level 3 tech guys and this is where we are. They were all extremely helpful. The N6 IMEI's from GP and Motorola are listed as not available on their network, when they try and add them the "official" way.
By using an activated SIM, the phone shows up as a "non-VZW device" on your VZW account, and somehow bypasses the add to database process when you call. They told me that pic messaging definitely would not work yet nor would MMS until Google/Verizon formally launch there on VZW.
To make this work:
1. I asked VZW tech support to assign my current micro-sim number on my Galaxy Nexus to the new, non-activated nano sim from VZW
2. Took my new nano-sim with my number and booted it in the Moto X. This activated the new SIM and provisioned as an authorized device.
3. I now had a newly activated nano-sim.
4. I took the new nano-sim and booted it in the N6. This worked and the N6 was now working on VZW.
5. I took my wife's original sim and put it back in the Moto X. It booted back, connected and successfully went back to "her number" .

I didn't have to do any of this, got a nano sim, called up support, told them i needed to activate a new sim, old one was having issues. They asked for the sim number. Popped it straight into the N6, as the nano wouldn't fit in my old phone, i didn't have an adapter. Everything worked fine, didn't have to provision the sim or anything.
I just cut my sim and did a factory reset and then my phone was ready to rock!
Iphone nano Sims will not work.
I got my nexus 6 the other day, finally ready to activate it on Verizon. I had a spare nano sim from the iphone 6 I sold. I called in and gave Verizon my sim ID and the IMEI of a spare iphone 6 at work. They told me it was activated so I stuck my sim in and booted it up. The setup wizard tells me still to insert a sim card. When I go into settings-cellular networks, search for and select Verizon, it tells me that the sim doesnt allow a connection to this network. I feel like though that my phone isnt even recognizing the sim (says no sim on the lockscreen). I figured what the heck, and decided to tell them that I have a nexus 6 and to see if they can force the imei in. They say they can do it so I give them my N6 imei. Even after that its still showing the same messages, and they then tell me that it could be the nano sim that im using (that came in the box with an iphone 6 from work) will not work in my phone and to grab one from the store.
My questions are:
Has anyone had issues using a sim from an iphone 6?
Does it still show the "No sim" message even if you have an unactivated sim installed?
Has anyone gotten these similar messages when selecting Verizon form the cellular networks?
Maybe you can go into a Verizon store and tell them your sim card stopped working and see if they give you a new one. Say it was working with your Nexus before but then it stopped and see what they do.
Was the sim from the iphone 6 ever activated? SIM cards can typically only be activated once.

It was not. It was bought as a replacement phone so an already active sim was used in it. I had it laying on my desk (although come to think of it the phone was bought as an "upgrade" so that may be possible.). I've never heard that they can only activate it once though.
I installed Sim Card Manager and it tells me the Sim Serial Number is unavailable. Does anyone have a non activated sim they can toss in for a sec to test and see if it stills says no sim card on the lockscreen or shows the sim serial in that app?
I purchased a Moto Z3 Play unlocked version from best buy a few months back. I was wondering does anyone know if this version has the hardware already inside for the dual sim tray and it would just be an issue with finding a dual sim tray that would fix in the phone?
I have the same question, for such a nice phone, it is pretty dead in this area of the forum.
I noticed there is a disabled app in the phone called "Dual Sim Settings"
The XT1929-6 variant is a dual sim, while mine the XT1929-4 is sold as a single sim phone.
I would think if it has the hardware for dual sim, the XT1929-6 sim tray would work?
I have verified yes it does have dual sim hardware.
You can get the sim holder here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Sim-C...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
I tried this mod, https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75790699&postcount=713
I was able to have the phone see both sims and the phone numbers, a Verizon Sim, and Google Fi sim. Only problem is that I had no sound at my end, or the person I called end.
Looks like a worthy project that needs some work.
Developers, I would gladly pay to have this feature working. :good:
Sweet, thanks for the information. I have sense moved to Japan where they sell the Moto Z3 play that comes with dual SIM card. Where I am using both Google fi and Japan mobile provider.
I do have issues calling out some times, and can't hear anyone on the other side but they can hear me. I am waiting for the pie update you see if it fixes any issues with dual SIM.
Besides that I use Google fi pretty much only for data, and my Japanese number for voice which works perfect.
I really do love this phone and it's probably the best phone I have ever owned.
I am thinking it is not possible to have 2 google fi sims, because you need an app with the email attached to the phone number, and can only be logged into one email at a time. Once I decide that Google Fi is good enough for my rural area, I can get rid of Verizon, and get a real dual sim phone, and us Fi and a GSM carrier.
:good:
Been experiencing "invalid SIM" error messages on Google Fi after the Pie update. It seems to happen when trying to connect to Sprint. I've tried removing the SIM, reactivating, factory reset. Nothing works.
Anyone else having this problem? It's happening on both my X4 A-1 and my wife's X4 A-1.
Happened to me. Thought I scratched my SIM when adding an sd card to the phone after upgrading to Pie. I contacted Fi and was sent a new SIM which hasn't fixed the issue. Factory reset and reflashing the upgrade didn't do anything.
Same here, my normal use is sprint...startup of sim is configuration of sprit dm... Get sim icon then searching in cell triangle. Signal info App data shows correct sim data for Sprint tower. After twice would access cell site but never got data connection or cell phone even though signal info app would show connected. Then fail, tried to access us cellular but complete sim failure. Removed sim returned to my "daily" Pixel working normally. I guess a push update in the future for us Fi base...have read this happening on first devices that went to Pie way back in August..... Our great android ONE .....
Different waters, same boat
I'm having the exact same issue. Wish I would have waited to take the update.
Same problem here. Restart doesn't help...tried all suggestions on the web using repair codes...only thing left to try is factory reset but have read that doesn't fix it(anybody here tried?).

In troubleshooting I am now getting the same error using my Moto X4 Amazon prime version on 8.1. I was playing around with the various repair codes to understand how they would react compared to my wifes Moto X4 Android One 9.0. I started to get invalid sim error after repairing on Sprint. Now I get the same errors on both 8.1 and 9.0 (invalid sim switching to Sprint). Looks like the problem is a little deeper and more complex than just the Pie upgrade.
At least both still work on Tmobile (the strongest carrier locally). Anxiously awaiting a fix.
A friend at work told me today he saw the invalid sim message and he is a regular Sprint customer so I agree this seems to be a Sprint issue.
It's not just X4A1 models. Regular X4 also. However, my X4A1 was purchased from Google. Quite a disappointing intro to Fi.
I bought 3 Moto X4s for my wife & kids directly from Google Fi. Kids are on Oreo & the wife is on Pie. All 3 phones get the dreaded Invalid SIM error when switching to Sprint. Now, every now and then, I can force connect to an "Unknown Carrier" with Mobile Network Code (MNC) 310-000 (Sprint is 310-120 & T-Mobile is 310-260). When connected to MNC 310-000, I got speeds of up to 74Mbps (I triple checked that wifi was off!). I believe that Sprint is doing network upgrades & for some reason the Moto X4 phones can connect to their test network but not their live network. Anyone else have any insights?
My Fi Moto X4 is Pie same thing. I also have US Cellular in this area and I can if Forced, connect to US Cell but oddly will always revert to T-Mobile. T-Mobile is zero most of the time but will never just try the other two in my coverage area. On Sprint will sim lock, which in the end is which of course locks it up.
I have 2 Pixels (first) Nov, Dec google factory images when were released I found same thing, but a 50-50 to get Sprint to show sprint dm services and complete....registering to specific tower coverage+sim + imei? When working on Sprint would always switch to T-Mobile. Now in the good old days would never go to T-Mobile, Sprint was preferred, then US Cellular, then if found any signal T-Mobile. Jan Images work so far with NO SIM LOCK. I can on my Pixel use a radio.img from Oct 18 and will work like the past on Dec images. So........waiting for "monthly" two months later updates, I guess.
