Hi all, I have scoured the web for similar issues and can't find any answers
-Captivate I897 running 2.1 formerly mounted to my MAC just fine, rooted using Galaxy-S one click root. Root was successful, mostly just removed bloatware, etc.. but alas my phone is no longer recognized by the computer, although the phone recognizes that it is connected, when I click "mount" nothing happens on the computer's end.
-Appears to be a problem with the phone, I have tried Win7 w/ Kies mini and installed/reinstalled drivers, dev mode, etc...nada. And here's the kicker - these machines will recognize and mount my GF's unrooted Vibrant just fine.
-I have a separate micro SD card reader that can read the SD card out of the phone that way.
-So, I am hoping for some help to either
1 - fix the computer recognition issue, or
2- find steps to manually update to 2.2 or unroot, etc, any ideas that will get me running 2.2 and hopefully mount to Mac or PC, using files manually loaded to the SD and installed during recovery mode, this looks like flashing, would Andromeda or Cognition fix the connectivity issue?
Thanks in advance!!
If you're rooted and can get into download mode (power off+2 volume buttons+plug usb in) then you can use this link ----> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702 to flash stock 2.2 firmware. Note: This WILL break your root. Here's the thread on Odin One Click as well---->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. You probably want to read the information there before flashing to 2.2.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the suggestion, I've tried multiple drivers, but since my PC doesnt recognize my phone, both Odin or Superoneclick dont recognize my phone also.
I was able to manually unroot by copying the One Click Root Update.zip to my phone via Wifi File-sharing app. Unroot was successful, but still no connection to PC or Mac.
I'm stuck for now, It appears that any type of flashing requires a PC connection, unless there is some way to flash completely with Wifi-copied files and using the 'reinstall packages' option?
Well, if you have a dropbox, you could drag and drop a rom (say cognition) onto your phone's dropbox. Then you'd need to find a CWM recovery (make sure it's not 3.0) update.zip and reinstall packages. This will give you CWM recovery, from which you could install Cognition from your dropbox. No guarantees it will work, but it's worth a shot.
Can't help on the Mac and I only have a dim memory of 2.1, but what are your setting under Settings/Applications for USB settings and Development? Do you have USB debugging checked (on)? Do you have the Development settings set to something weird like Kies update?
My recommendation is to put USB debugging on (checked). In that case I think the USB settings choice is disabled and therefore ignored. Then when you connect to the computer you will get a message in the notification bar on your phone saying something like "select to copy files to/from the computer". Click that, then click the mount button. You should then be able to see the extra drives on your computer by looking under My Computer or whatever (on a PC). On mine they are F and G, no special indications that they are drives on an attached phone. I also do get an automatic pop-up for the new drives, like when you insert a USB stick, but I imagine that setting could be disabled so look for the drives manually.
If you can get a com port try to do a master clear with the phone plugged in and on the entire time, then do various methods of getting into download mode if you got a com port when the phone booted up, future references I would use Odin to flash speedmod kernel to get cwm and then flash a rom or leave it as is, when I first started rooting I used the same software and got the same problem
Try installing all the drivers beforehand just to make sure

My wife's phone has the exact same issue as OP. Suggestions like above are useless unfortunately as the phone does not recognize that it is connected to a computer. Instead it acts as though it is connected to a charger. The oddest thing is that if I plug it in to a computer while the phone is turned off, the phone will turn on! However, still no recognition that it is connected to a PC.
Initially when I connected the phone the first time, Win7 said driver failed to install. Then my working cappy would not connect to Win7. I had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers and restart. My working cappy connected as it should, but my wife's phone from that point refused to recognize anything but charging.
Attempts to fix Via external SD: (1) I transferred Continuum 4.1 and reinstalled. Still not recognized. (2) Transferred my recovery images from January for stock, but just became stuck on boot screen for Continuum. I am uneasy about transferring the update-recovery.zip and download folder from original backup as I do not know whether it will screw up attempts to re-enter recovery if it does not work. (3) Attempted download mode, but only works via CWM 2 (not extended menu or three button or by inserting battery with odin up trick). Even when in DL mode odin does not recognize the COM port. (4) Attempted different orders for connecting to Odin in DL mode. By orders I mean rearranging the order I connect (i.e. open odin then connect cable then go to DL). (5) transferred andromeda3 and reinstalled, still same issue.
So, I am left thinking a hardware failure occurred at some point, so I will need to open it up and check connectors to solder it possibly.
Possible non-hardware solution is to restore to stock somehow WITHOUT Odin via CWM. Anyone know if this is possible or have a link to a flashable zip?
Thanks!
edit: I am on Win7 and always made sure USB debugging was checked. Also I tried to connect via One-Click Root for the heck of it and kies mini. No luck.
flashed without a cable
Thanks for the tip jomeister 15, I was able to flash new roms dropped over wifi with CWM recovery. This got me onto 2.2 which was the main purpose of this whole adventure. I just loaded Andromeda3 and it's pretty darn impressive.
My PC and Mac still do not recognise my phone, I troubleshot extensively like Snowake and nothing is recognized. I'm convinced its a hardware issue but who cares with wireless flashing and file transfer.

You could try to send a ROM, kernel, and update.zip(CWM flash) and attempt to get another ROM over it. Format the system, wipe dalvik, I don't think its a hardware issue, I had the same problem first time I tried using 1 click rooting, I just waited patiently and got a com port after about two days, so that just leads me to believe some configuration file was corrupted during flash to stock, possibly flashing a ROM or reflashing the ROM you're on with a complete wipe of the system and user data and whatnot, or possibly just doing a backup up from cwm and immediately restore it, if its charging I highly doubt its hardware

Hello everybody.
My phone's display is bricked. In the meantime already bought a Samsung Galaxy Nexus but nevertheless I would like to save all the data from my internal SGS+ storage. The difficulties I have are:
1. no chance to unlock the phone after boot, cause I don't know where to push the buttons
2. no chance to get into recovery
3. no idea, if it is possible and how i could maybe save the data via download mode?!
So, does anybody of you know a possible way to get the data from my internal sd on my computer? besides i would like to reset the phone afterwards to prepare it for sale. any ideas for that?!
Thank you all for help!

is your phone rooted and can you use adb shell?
then you can dump the partitions
edit: if you have succesfully all data restored, flash a stock rom with odin, before you will give the device away (all your personal data will gone)

if you had the usb debugging active then it`s easy, just start it, download from web QtADB or Android Commander (google them), connect phone to PC and if it`s recognized then all you have to do is to copy from it all you want/need
if you don`t have usb debugging then you have to find a way to mount internal storage in recovery doing it blind isn`t hard, you just need 2 screenshots from exactly the same recovery you had installed on your SGS+ then use one of those programs above to copy from your phone. (I think recovery can be accesed w.o. usb debugging enabled by default)

yeah, my phone's rooted and i've already flashed different ROMs with ODIN - thanks so far.
but I've never used the Android SDK and adb shell before, so I have no idea how to connect the phone (via usb mount in recovery? via download mode? boot normally without unlocking it?) and how to use the adb with which commands!?

Thanks for the tools, look helpful and as I remember, USB debugging was activated. But should this even work, if my phone is still locked (with this Android-security pattern and SIM-lock as no PIN can be entered)?
Finally thanks for your quick feedbacks!

ofc it will work as long your phone is rooted (for the system access) and usb debugging on. The pin doesn`t lock you phone entirely, just the SIM
I tried QtADB and it's great! Exactly what I've been looking for, thanks! The better alternative for people who are not used to the adb shell and easy to use for some basic tasks.
edit: faced some problems while copying data with QtADB, therefore tried Android Commander and could copy all files properly
So I got carried away with trying to get rid of that three dot menu button at the bottom of the screen and I've slowly managed to work myself into a really bad problem. I'm not necessarily new to this, I've rooted my Droid 2, Droid 3, and GS3, but this has been more complicated for me.
Anyways, my problem is, I was trying to wipe my phone so that I could flash a ROM. This is because I couldn't access my settings (I overwrote the original in an attempt to get rid of the multitask button). But while I was in CWM I factory reset it but I also accidentally deleted the system. My bootloader is unlocked, but now my phone is on and I can't get into recovery, and I'm assuming it's because the whole system is gone so there's nothing to boot.
Another problem I had (while my phone was able to boot up completely), Android File Transfer wouldn't work, I downloaded a rom for the settings.apk but it wouldn't let me transfer files between my computer and phone. I emailed the .apk to myself but since I couldn't access settings I wasn't able to pick my usual email (although now I'm thinking I should have just used the email I first signed in with). Not as much of a concern but input is still welcome.
I've looked up RUU but it looks like it's not available yet for Verizon. Any possible solutions would be MUCH appreciated.
Don't worry, your device is not bricked.
If your bootloader works well, you must select fastboot and flash the recovery via fastboot.exe in the command line. Now you should be able to get into recovery.
If you wiped your partitions, you can have a trouble with mounting /sdcard. Then you should get an OTG Micro USB cable and put ROM on your USB stick, but I'm not sure if TWRP recovery for HTC One supports mounting flash memory from USB host.

I tried flashing into recovery via fastboot but my computer doesn't recognize my device. And I'm pretty sure I had drivers installed since that's how I unlocked the bootloader in the first place..

Install the latest drivers and try from a windows 7 pc (or windows 8, win 8.1 doesn't work well)
Reinstall drivers if you haven't already and try the correct file for your 'Modelid' here. It's the only way I got mine to work again after i did the same thing.
Note: The file i used had a different software version but it still flashed ok.
After that, if you can find the right Nandroid you now have the ability to flash that

Hi there.
I recently flashed the OmniROM to my i8190, but since it got several issues, after two weeks i decided to flash stock ROM.
So i enter TWRP recovery and wipe all data on the smartphone, but then my computer crashed and lost the VM that got Odin and drivers etc. so in a new VM i decided to try to flash, but now i can't.
Odin doesn't recognize my i8190, i thought ADB sideload could do the trick following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559200but all i got was:
error: device not found
Now i ended up with a pretty brick hahaha.
How can i flash a ROM ..ANY to my phone.
I got another i8190 so i installed the drivers from it to the VM, all except the MTP device, that got error.
I also installed SAMSUNG drivers, but nothing, ... i'm kind of losing it now hahaha.
Can someone helpe me flash this thing?
a) I CAN enter TWRP Recovery
b) I CAN enter Download Mode
c) Don't know if Odin doesn't pick it up since USB Debug i presume it's not on, but then again, since no OS is installed, i don't know how to turn it on from recovery or something like it.

Try another usb port and/or another usb cable. Also make sure that nothing with kies is runnung in background if you happens to have that installed.
When you connect with adb, also take a look on your phone screen if it asks for authorization to connect.
You got both download and recovery so problem is with connection/drivers.

Try this :
If you have an external sdcard in your s3 mini then :
1. remove it and put it into a other phone
2. download a ROM and move the ROM what you downloaded to your external sdcard
3. Put the external sdcard back to your s3 mini
4. Go to recovery and choose "install from external sdcard"
5. And intstall the ROM
6. Done! You have a OS again.
It's very easy and if you don't have a external sdcard then you have a big problem bro

If you have an adapter (micro SD to SD) then you should be able to insert the card into a card reader. This will probably be easier than trying to find another phone.

Glad you've got it sorted.
I've noticed my PC wants to install drivers for the phone almost constantly. Every small change seems to result in a change of driver. It can be frustrating.

due to windows updates this should be expected that certain third party software like the drivers would need updates
so that leaves two choices
either keep your stuff up to date
or
get left behind and drowned in problems
I'm in a big predicament. A few weeks ago I installed the MOAR ROM on my Note 5. After installing this ROM I was no longer able to connect my phone to PC. I tried a Windows 8 PC which says I have an unrecognized USB device plugged in. I tried going into Developer settings to set USB mode to MTP but the option didn't exist. I had all USB drivers installed as well. My wife's phone is recognized no problem. When plugging the phone into my linux machine absolutely nothing happened. It used to show the phone in the left navigation panel in my window manager but after installing MOAR ROM it was no longer detected.
Anyway, today I was trying to play Cartoon Wars 3 and since my phone is rooted it wouldn't let me play. I decided to go into the Super User app and disable it to see if the game would work and it didn't. When I went to re-enable the app it said installation failed and asked me to reboot. I clicked reboot and was sent into a boot loop. I thought okay no big deal, I'll just restore a backup in TWRP. When I go to restore the backup and select the backup file it asks which partitions to restore, but there are no boxes to check. It usually has options like system and data but now it's just blank. I tried a factory reset and I'm still in a bootloop. I'm at a complete loss. I don't know what else to do. I've tried download mode and everything but no matter what I do my phone isn't detected by my pc.
I appreciate any help. I don't know what to do. I'm out of a phone right now and don't have a backup. Not to mention I'm in between jobs right now and can't afford a new one right now.
Just flash a stock rom from sammobile.com
Pre req:
*Odin(any vers)
*Stock rom
Steps
*Extract the downloaded stock rom in your PC
*In twrp wipe everything except internal, then boot in to download mode.
*Once in download mode, connect your phone to your pc, then open Odin.
*In Odin, check the "AP" section and locate the downloaded stock rom(the extracted one)
*Hit start.
Hpe that helps

Thank you for your reply but it seems you didn't read my post. My phone is not recognized by any pc.
What is the terminal command to restore a backup? That's pretty much my last ditch effort.
Well I broke my recovery so I'm screwed. I contacted Samsung and they said they would service it for free. Wish me luck.
What would cause the phone to stop being recognized by the PC? I narrowed it down to the MTP software or the micro usb charge port. My Windows computer says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux box does nothing. No USB devices are listed when I run lsblk.

when your phone is in download mode,it doesn't work to connect it with samsung kies on your pc?
You could try using the Kies software to reload the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

when your phone is in download mode,it doesn't work to connect it with samsung kies on your pc?
You could try using the Kies software to reload the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone

Kies doesn't work either. I already tried that. When I hook up the phone It says "Device Descriptor Request Failed". It used to connect to my computers until I put MOAR ROM on the phone. Since then it stopped being recognized by my computers. There's either something wrong with the connection or something got corrupted.

What have you already tried?
- are you sure you're using a data cable and not a charging-only cable?
- have you tried a different computer?
- have you installed the Kies software?
- what does Device Manager show when the phone is connected?
- assuming that the phone is working normally, does the phone show anything when you connect it?
- do you have try windows 8 or 10?
can be you found a solution in this forum

I've tried 4 different cables. My wife's S5 works perfectly fine on all computers. I have tried in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. I've also tried in Linux Mint. It used to work until I installed MOAR Rom. Windows says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux doesn't do anything when hooked up. lsblk doesn't show the device either.
I have a bit of an update. Apparently something happened with all my data cables. I hooked up my wife's phone the other day and I was all of a sudden receiving the same error as the note 5. I went out and bought a new data cable and now her phone connects again. I'm waiting for the Note 5 to charge up so I can try Odin. I'll post back my results.
I apologize to those who told me it was the cable. I just didn't see that it was conceivable that all 4 of my data cables were all of a sudden damaged. Never underestimate the ability of children to destroy every working cable you own.
Well I'm still getting the error. I have some usb cables coming in the mail so once i try those out I'll get back to everyone.

Were you able to fix your issue. I have the same issue. Note 5 N9208, I can get into Recovery (TWRP) and Download mode, but can not boot. The USB connection is showing USB Device Descriptor failed. I have tried 5 different cables and Windows 7/10 Ubuntu and cant get the phone to show up on the PC. I also have changed the USB port of the phone. Any insight would be helpful.

I ended up trying to replace the port and accidentally cut the ribbon for the LCD screen. Ended up getting a new phone.
