Stuck on Checking for Update after a hard reset - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hi, this is my first time making a thread and I'm not sure if this fits into the right category, anyways I've had to a factory rest since I forgot my pattern password on my Note 9 (because I'm an idiot) and now after the hard reset I am now stuck on "Checking for Updates" after the rebooting the phone and there is no skip button and I have tried doing another hard reset to still being stuck on the same page. I've let this "Checking for updates" run for about 2 hours to only get a message saying "Taking to long? Try going back and connecting to a different network" and I'm really out of options, any help would be appciated.
Thanks.

Do you have Internet access and sufficient bandwidth where you connected to?

I think you can log on to computer and your Samsung account and use an option within findmyphone to fix this.

reminds me of my LG v20 which had similar problem (910K B50) Stuck on firmware upgrade and waiting for connection. Nothing could be done for the LG, hopefully yours can be fixed. It either a virus or interrupted firmware update don't know what else could've done it

Well I'm currently overseas over at China with very slow internet also not sure about the Mbps since its to slow to run that and I have to use Vpn since China blocks out YouTube, Google etc. so I'm not sure if that's that cause.
*edit* I've managed to run an internet Speed test with an average Mbps download of 0.30 Mbps and upload of 2 Mbps, not sure if that's any useful but hopefully it is

nope nothing could be done. no safe mode, no download mode, nothing. going back to the same screen. I even gave the phone to 2 different places to try to fix it and even they couldn't do it, saying there is no file system no structure or anything. so yeah dead weight

I don't think Samsung would drop there standards, could a low internet connection also cause this continuous thing to never end?

I have an identical issue, on my note 8, and i am also in China. wondering if there was any solution found?
I suspect the problem might be because china blocks Google services and the phone is trying to connect to google.
Please if a solution was found, do share.

I assume you've all tried setting up without a sim and wifi disconnected? Works fine for me, it just skips the update checking on initial setup as there's no connection.
Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk

I've had the exact same problem on my galaxy s8 and had excellent wifi connection when I tried to get it going after the reset (but still tried to do it with two other connections). I removed the simcard, disconnected the wifi and it just skipped that step (looking for updates). Now the phone is working good!
(still scared that the virus hatched on once again since I didn't wipe my SDcard and put it in again (stupid). But I'm always a bit paranoid and I'm not sure it works that way)
Fixed the problem anyways. Just remove simcard and disconnect wifi.

I was thinking the same thing, just need to get a router with VPN, thx for the advice.

hi, my note has done the same thing, I did a factory reset... need to be able to stop the checking for updates somehow?
or find someone with a modem with a VPN instilled on it. any ideas
?

This is how to fix the problem if overseas
number one If you have hard reset your phone, and then realised I need that VPN to go online like myself in China.
turn off the WIFI on your phone, remove your sim card turn off the phone. turn your phone back on and you can set up the phone again, turn on the phones wifi and re-back up your phone from your Samsung account.
the reason why you should use Google and Samsung to back up all your things is for this reason. you don't need a VPN for Samsung.
this should work on all phones.
mine phone is a Samsung note 9 with android 9 operation system, 8gb -512gb

GLUNB1A133830 no honeycomb auto update.

If you have this number "above" in your oem version post a little something, if you got it from dell or other than dell.
I'm determined to figure out why this oem number isn't receiving the update.
Also say rather your service tag directs you too the streak 5 download's or not.
Thanks
No update for me yet...
I have this number GLUNB1A133830 I got it at Staples.
Service tag comes up as streak 7 at dell:
1 XT0R4 ASSEMBLY..., BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP)..., TABLET..., WI-FI, 16G, STRK7
I am stock same as day I took it out of the box. Not even rooted.

Also checked out my sons... same deal as mine in every aspect.
No update for me yet either...
I have that number . won it in a contest so not sure where it came from.
Same here (Staples). Still waiting. Not sure if i want the update after reading some of the 'impressions'.
wow i thought i was the only one. also got it from staples. mine went into read only mode. sending it to dell. did urs go into read only mode also?
I just tested and I do not have a read only issue.
No read only here either, & still no update.
I have that OEM number as well, I install honeycomb using the link from another thread and its working fine. I didn't event have to do a factory reset, almost everything worked fine.
Go for it

Any particular reason why all of you are waiting for the update? I too had the same build as all of you and I bought my directly from Dell in July.
I proceeded to go to the link below (yes I've read many of the threads here) and it provided the download page. Once I did the download, up in the notification bar, you drag it down to show it's progress when it is done. Once it is done, all you have to do is tap on it and it will advise you that there is an update and do you want to install it. Once you click "Proceed or Yes or Update"...don't recall the exact wording, it will then compare your system to the update and once it finds that it's compatible, it will then install.
Two things when doing an update...
1) The battery should be FULLY charged
2) Don't reboot the device during an update.
The system will reboot itself and the install takes about 5 - 10 minutes to complete. It will take that long to download as well depending on your internet speed.
I've had my update since Thursday and there has been no issues with it. It survived an entire day (7am - 10pm) without needing a charge as I gave it to my daughter Thursday night as a gift for her schooling as she has books she needs to read that are in ebook format.
I know I'm not the only one who has done the update with the same build and I haven't seen any of us with any issues. Remember that Dell sending out the updates in phases so not everyone is going to get notified at the same time because their servers will not be able to handle that volume of traffic.
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=GLUNB1A334430
Same, but I don't care, I'm not updating until there's a custom kernel with tun.ko and some of the bugs are tweaked. Unfortunately I have to read Yet Another Forum to keep up on that development....
I guess its more of why isn't it auto updating or showing the page saying no updates? Curios if that will be corrected & eventually we will get prompted to update. I know i can go with the other link, but then i wouldn't ever know the answer to the above.
I just got off the phone with Dell mobile support, I told the tech that I wasn't seeing an update to 3.2 when doing a check from settings and asked if there was an update available for my service tag no. The tech gave me a link that was the same link listed in the second post of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291257
which is
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=GLUNB1A334430
So according to the Dell mobile support tech the update package is the same
for GLUNB1A133830 and GLUNB1A334430 which is why I called.
Did you ask why it might be acting like it is?
Ok i went for it since the dell guy said to do it, man i'm glad i did, this is exactly what i wanted... I might actually get the dock now.
I also have a Streak 7 from Staples with the same version number. I performed the upgrade with no apparent issue. At this time, I have discovered two issues. First, Netflix doesn't work. I can log in and see what it offers, but it fails when I attempt to stream. And second, when I connect to the dock, it does not recognize that it is docked. It charges, but doesn't acknowledge that it is in the dock. I have not tested if it will direct video out to the HDMI port or not, since I can't get Netflix to work.
Netflix won't stream video with most HC platforms, there are only a couple that do work. Netflix needs to get serious about correcting the issue it has been dragging alone for months now, and since it worked correctly under 2.2 it isn't hardware. but somthing between HC and the Netflix app which was solved for a couple platforms.
On a plus side my DS7 will now pair with my BT keyboard which makes text a whole lot easier to work with.
Have you tried this patch? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178773
Grab the file and put the file in /system replacing the existing file.

I tried different methods for the HC update, but no luck. Is it because of GLNUB1A133830. The unit was brought from Staples.

Out of curiosity, which methods and what were the results? Do you even get the page that says there is an update but the package won't install after it finishes downloading?
Method I used:
Charge battery to above 60% (well above)
Using the stock browser go to
http://mobileupdate.dell.com/?version=GLUNB1A334430
click on the download and install button
When the download is complete click on the notification that the "download completed" That will start the install process.
When complete I found that most of my downloaded apps were still installed BUT many had problems. So if that is what you find go to setting Privacy and do a factory data reset you will then have to go to Market, Amazon,... and reinstall your applications. Good luck

What Rom did you flash? I would make sure that the LTE and eHRPD is also off. Check this by going to ##3282# and then edit and then go to advanced and scroll to the bottom and make sure they are both disabled. Let me know if that works.
Most recently I tried beanstalk but the same thing happens with any rom that doesn't have sense. Also ## codes don't seem to work without sense.

Did you make sure in the settings for mobile data it is on CDMA only for the network mode?
ASOP Roms don't support PhoneUtil (## codes) it use to, but CM broke that somewhere in CM9. So, any radio writing has to be done via Sense.

I see the same issue after writing exactly same values to both profile 0 and 1 and pick profile 0 is the active profile. The problem still exists. But for a very short period after reboot, the phone got a working 3G connection. The browser seems working.
After a minute or two MIP 89 error shows up again.
While I am typing, the error went away and I see 3G connection again. I don't use any donor phone yet.

WiFi gone..

Hey there. Had a strange problem, happened 2 times till now. WiFi was completely gone, went to the settings/wifi and wifi was still on, but the list of AP's/Networks was completely empty. Anyone had that happen ?

No one, really ?
I've had the saved Wi-Fi connections be forgotten after a reboot/shutdown. Happened this morning actually.
I have tons of wifi problems, but not this one. My wifi takes a long time to come on after being turned off, often more than a minute, and the wifi setting pages hangs.

This can happen if you have multiple devices. The wifi password file acquires multiple entries and the phone fails to pick one. Longstanding bug Google is ignoring. If you have a rooted device you can read the wifi supplicant file and see the multiple entries to confirm this is what's happening to you.
This is happening to me more and more on my Nexus 6. I'm rooted and stock. Haven't found a solution yet.
My WiFi situation is a disaster with nexus 6 too. No problems at al

Data Not Working When Mobile Hotspot Active

Hey guys, so the purpose of this thread is to find out if this is a bug or just how the mobile hotspot works on the P9. Everytime my hotspot is active, I can't use data on my device. No other Android device that I've used has ever has this issue with a mobile hotspot.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks in advance!
Bump. Anyone experiencing this?
I have the same issue. Discovered it the day after i got it took it backed and swapped it, all was good. Then a few days later the new phone developed this issue. The only way around that I have found is forget the network on the device you are trying to tether to your p9, set up the connection again, return to the home screen on your p9, go and make a cuppa for 5 to 10 minutes then hopefully it will be fully connected and be able to share data. Long winded i know and if anyone else has a fix for this i would love to hear it as I'm bored of not being to use all my extra data I've just upgrade to when I want to.

Thank you for the response! Good to know it's not only me. Hopefully this is not an issue in the Nougat build.
I'd of thought a few other people would have this issue. I searched for ages when I first got the phone but couldn't find anyone who was experiencing it and gave up, then accidentally found your post months later. Is your p9 branded? Mine's a Vodafone.

I do not have the phone, so this goes first. But I am vodafone user. Bear in mind that some data plans do not allow tethering. If before you had android KK, there was no problem, but since LL, your phone is sending information of how the data is used. Then, vodafone blocks your connection.
You can try to use an app that is called Tether Unlock. You need root.

Rogers in Canada. No Canadian carriers have tethering/mobile hotspot restrictions, so that's more of a US thing.

Yeah I try to power down after I forget the WiFi setting as a precaution but always have to forget the network then enter the pass key again for it to fully connect to my p9. I'm using the latest firmware from Vodafone but I don't think they have rolled out nougat yet. Not tried any other roms.
The other option is Bluetooth tether, that works fine for me but but the data speed sucks for browsing or streaming, might be an option to connect to your car radio though but I haven't tried it.

Was hoping it's was something to do with the Vodafone software, no such luck

Just got my Mate 10 and have discovered exactly the same problem. As soon as I turn on mobile hotspot, then laptop works fine but all data stops on phone. Thsi is not a network issue as I'm on same network as my previous phone and my package specifically allows tethering.
As soon as I turn off hotpot, data works on my phone again.
Any proper fix appreciated...
Bump this thread. I rebranded my P9 3G+32G to EVA-L19C432 and this problem is happening since the rebranding. The phone itself just loses data when wifi hotspot is turned on while the laptop tethered to the phone has no problem navigating. Before with EVA-AL00C00 firmware, this was not the case. Navigation on the phone was not an issue whether or not wifi hotspot was turned on.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem?
Huawei P9 Lite Hotspot
Don' know if this will fix others but turning on hotspot turns off wifi and mobile data.
After some messing, I realised that I had to MANUALLY turn on mobile data to connect to the internet!
Seems OK so far.
Hope this helps.
How did you solve it? I have p20 pro and it is so ennoying not to be able use data on phone while sharing data... I'm on Vodafone UK and there is no restrictions on sharing data.
Hello , I have exactly the same issue with a Huawei Smart P. As soon as I turn on hotspot mode, the data connection stops and vice versa.
I thought it might be a carrier restriction, so I tried the SIM in a portable hotspot. It works, so it' s not that.
Bump. Same issue here. I have a Honor 9, Android 8.0.0. If I activate tethering, be it USB or Hotspot, the connection works only on the devices connected to the phone, while I can't use data on the phone itself. As soon as I turn tethering off, it works on the phone again...
Any help appreciated!

Bump. There must be some expert around here with a clue about what's going on

Screen Mirror Not Working via Google Home (Chromecast)

Anyone having issue unable to screen cast from Google Home to chromecast? It will disconnect immediately upon clicking the screen cast button. There is no issue casting directly from apps such as youtube etc, but I want to mirror cast my screen. It works previously on my S7 Edge and Note 7...
Thanks!
Did it yesterday, it works just fine. Had the same issue you're describing with my S7E occasionally. Would kill the Home app and reboot the Chromecast, then it would start working.
Works for me. After I reset chromecast, but I'm sure it was my flaky CC not the phone?
Sent from my SM-N950U using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Hmm I did a factory reset on the Chromecast, still the same problem. I even reinstall the Google Home. It shows "Disconnect" immediately after I click cast screen, damn annoying..

I had a similar problem... it turned out the phone was connecting to 2.4ghz WiFi and the stick was connecting to 5ghz WiFi at home.. when it was same network it worked fine else it disconnected.

I've been researching this problem for the past week. What i've gathered so far is that some process interferes with mirroring after my phone has been running for a while... If I restart my phone, or chromecast - it works no problems. It also works casting netflix, youtube, etc. I have a samsung TV, and when i try to connect my phone through TV, it also works. I called Chromecast yesterday, thinking that it could be a defective chromecast device, but it works other than the above issue. So I think that some process gets activated some time shortly after phone reboot, and that's why when i press 'cast screen/audio' from Home app, it says 'disconnecting', because some other process is already working... I will be calling Samsung Tech support tonight, to see if they have any clue, although i don't get my hopes up. If their tech support guys are the same as their customer service reps, I won't get far with them.
I also tried any and all settings changes that i could think of, and nothing works. The best solution for me is either to restart my phone prior to mirroring, or just connect from TV to the phone (it works that way), not from phone to TV. If I figure out a solution, I'll try to update. I have a similar thread on Android Central in Note 8 General section that i started Sunday, 10/15/2017. No one seems to know the solution, and not many people have encountered this (you are the first person that i found with the same problem other than myself).
Just found this app by Samsung called "ScreenMirroring Patch", will try out after work: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...patch&hl=en&rdid=com.sec.screenmirroringpatch

My networks are the same - Chromecast and the phone. I had the problem you had previously, it would continuously drop the connection... This isn't the same problem, it just says ' connecting' and never does if i try to mirror my screen through Smart View (in my quick settings panel), or 'disconnecting' if i select 'cast screen/audio' through Home app.

This is the exact problem that I am having and the same resolution that I came to. I literally have to restart my phone every time I go to cast. I've had an issue where I left it casting for a while, but the phone seemed to forget and shut it off. The stream was still going on the Chromecast, but I could not disconnect with my phone via Netflix or through the Home app. After I rebooted, I was able to disconnect through the Home app.
I searched for a bout 10 days after I got my phone and found nothing about this. No answers, not even a mention of anyone else having the issue. I really thought I was the only one.

So I spoke to Samsung + Tech support, and they didn't know what the problem was. They offered for me to send in my device for repairs. I am kind of hesitant since i don't know if that would fix the problem, and it will take 9-11 business day, i don't have a decent phone to use for 2 weeks... He also suggested that it was a software bug, and that i wait for software update. Since we should be getting Oreo by the end of the year (fingers crossed), maybe i just wait until we get an update and see if it's fixed. I did a factory reset on Friday, but didn't check for the issue right away, only after installing all of my apps. Really don't know what to do... Hopeful that someone else discovers the solution - or concrete cause. Oh well... I will never buy directly from Samsung again. Verizon would have sent me a replacement, and I would have it in 2 days, and wouldn't be without a phone for 2 weeks.
I was curious so I tried screen mirroring to my Amazon Fire TV. Tries to connect but fails. My Note 8 will say connecting to Fire TV & my Fire TV will say connecting to Note 8 but it fails & disconnects.
I don't think wifi type has anything to do with it. My Note 5 screen mirrors fine & my Note 5 is connected to 2.4ghz & my Fire Tv is connected to 5ghz.
Tried restarting my Note 8 & even tried connecting it to the 5ghz also, no luck. I never use it but damn, just knowing that it doesn't work is not good for my health!
I recently added an exchange account, and remember a while back some phone options weren't available because they weren't secure enough and not allowed by exchange policy. I removed the account, cleared cache, and restarted the phone. It worked (usually does after a restart),but I'll will check again tomorrow
I did a search (outside of XDA) & it appears that a lot of people are having this problem with the Note 8, S8 also. I tried changing the resolution on both my Note 8 & Fire TV, still no luck for me but some say it worked for them.
Can you link to the other site's discussions? Thanks
Lower your screen resolution?

First 3 results that pop up on Google. On Samsung forums so they're pretty useless.

Tried it, 2 posts up, even with restart after changing. No luck for me.
Wow, I didn't see those. Thank you, at least mine works after restart, and now I know that's it's probably a bug, not my phone is defective

So I changed my screen resolution to 450 as in the instructions in the picture, and haven't restarted the phone since about 8pm last night, and it works, it mirrors without restart - thank you!
Edit: I also removed my Exchange account, so that could have also been the cause
My other question is how to disable volume limiter when watching videos - any type, Netflix, showbox? I can disable it for headphones or Bluetooth through sound settings, but not for videos through the phone's speaker. Thanks in advance

I think I spoke too soon . Yesterday it worked all day from the day before, but this morning I tried to connect, and no luck. Oh well... I think it's a software bug. Hopefully they'll fix it in Oreo
I am running a Pixel XL 1 with Oreo and having this problem, anyone find a solution?
