I just installed Messenger - Android Apps on Google Play on my Moto X (2013) Verizon Wireless (Android 4.4.4) and using "Titanium Backup" I "Froze" my native "Messaging" app (green icon).
Yet when someone texts me Messaging app (green icon) reappear from frozen, what am I doing wrong? How should I deal with it? It doesn't look like Messaging app (green icon) is active as I switched my "Default SMS app" to "Messenger", is there something else I need to "Freeze" as well?
Do you have the Google Messenger app set as the default SMS app?

Yes, I do. I didn't even know app can unfreeze itself too.

Are you sure you froze the right app? The green Messaging app is the stock standard android messaging app, not specific to Verizon. The Verizon Messaging app should be a different app, probably red icon.
Also why bother with TiBU to freeze you can just try disabling from settings. Settings -> Apps -> All -> Verizon Messages -> Disable
Alternatively when you get a text and Verizon Messaging app pops up click the android Recent Apps/Multitasking button, long press Verizon, select App Info, and Disable.
Only need TiBU if stock disable feature is unavailable.

Yes, I'm sure I froze right app, maybe I mislabeled it by saying it's Verizon when it's not, but I did freeze (multiple times) a green icon app "Messaging" aka (Messaging 4.4.4-26 (SMS/MMS PREFS)".

I tried that first, it was greyed out, so I cannot do it.

... and that's exactly why I attempt to do it using "Titanium Backup" and unfortunately was not successful(
OK well yeah that was confusing because there is a completely different app called Verizon Messages (has some good ratings, you might wanna look into it).
Anyway, we agree you're talking about the stock messaging app. Unfortunately it seems the stock app is integral to the 4.4.4 system, which is probably why there's no disable button and why you can't freeze it either. And even if you did manage to freeze it, it's likely you can't receive messages at all using other apps.
The solution seems to be to simply turn off notifications from within the app: Messaging -> Settings

If you're dead set on going all out war on the app you can try using a file explorer with root privilege, find the messaging app (it's System -> priv-app -> MMS) and try renaming it, but that would be a hollow victory as like before it would probably inhibit other apps ability to receive SMS. so just turn off notifications.

Messenger is just a wrapper or fancier interface to the stock MMS app. If you physically remove MMS.apk (or sometimes messaging.apk) from /system/priv-app, then Messenger won't work at all.
You have to have the stock mms app on your system for Messenger to work (at least on 4.4.x)

Thanks, you've explained what i wanted to know in simple terms. as i did delete these apk and reboot and every sms messaging app crashed when i tried to launch them.
Hi all,
I have add the likes of Viber and Whatsapp to the protected app list, but still once the app is closed it stops getting push notifications.
Have played around with the battery manager, but still no luck.
Has anyone got a fix or workaround for this?
Thanks
Paul
have you tried enabling notification acess from settings>notification panel and statusbar>notification manager and giving acess to each app to show notification on different aspects.
Put these apps in the whitelist (protected apps)
Did you disable background data for those apps?
So I'm using Huawei P10 and my problem is Push notifications not working. I've missed tons of message in Reddit,Viber,Gmail,Messenger and other apps, it only updates when I open the apps, How can I enable notifications for them and at the same time i want to preserve battery

Did you get a solution for this?
You need to go into battery settings. There is an option called "close apps on screen lock" or something similar. There you need to whitelist apps from which you want to receive notifications. Apps that are not whitelisted will be closed when you lock your screen and they will only refresh when you open the app again.
Hello guys,
I just got a P9 this week, but I'm facing a problem with notifications. I need to open the app to get notification. If I don't open the apps, I don't need notification (WhatsApp, Facebook).
Can anyone help with it ? There is a way to solve this ?
For Whatsapp you can make a widget from the app on your homescreen. Now the app is forced to run in the background and you get notifications. An other solution is to convert your apps into a system app. You can also go to settings>apps>settings>special access>Ignore Battery Optimization and click on the dropdown and select all apps. Then search Whatsapp and click on it. Then press allow.
Hi Everyone,
I don't know whether it has been asked or not before, but i searched the forum, and didn't find anything related to it.
OK, my point is that i do not receive notifications or messages from whatsapp, insta etc whether it is in normal mode or power saving turn on.
Also i have disabled all the relevant battery options, which may can cause the issue like adaptive battery(turned off), Put unused apps to sleep, sleeping apps(not a single app in sleeping app), auto disabled unused app and optimised settings.
I have to open app to see messages.
Please suggest some workaround. and share your experience also.
Thanks
Have you checked app notification settings? On Oreo, you can find this in individual app settings.
And have you given notification permission to any app like Tasker, Pushbullet, Nova or even your Wearable Companion? Regarding latter, do you have any wearable connected?

i do not use such type of apps, permissions and other things are perfect, The issue is that i have to open app to see my messages, when i open app, i receive notifications also, seems app were sleeping, but in actual they are not.
I'm having the same issue. I've disabled all battery saving and app killing features, yet most apps that send push notifications don't auto update at all. I have to go into the app manually.
Example I just installed a new package tracking app, since my other one wasn't sending push notifications. I just opened it and BOOM 4 notifications. Yet I have it set to push those to me as they update..
What gives?
