Why is custom ROM support for this device so less? - Moto G6 Questions & Answers

I'm currently a g5s plus user which gets a lot of love from devs. And I see that there are barely any ROM'S for this device? What's the reason?

Cool this is the g6 forum not the g5+ forum lol I wanna know what even brings you to this forum since you have e a g5+. there's a couple being worked on for the g6 plus but there not ready for public release yet and that's it. No one really gives a damn about the Moto g6 or g6 play which sucks ass tbh. I've literally tried given an extra g6 play I had away for free to any dev and I was willing to pay the shipping even and no one even bothered asking about it so I got rid of it lol

Depends on the variant. G6+ was not released in the US officially so that hurt adoption as the G6 is not exactly a stand out device. The 6+ can be bought on Amazon in the US but it lacks a warranty and comes with Amazon bloatware(Alexa, Amazon.com, Amazon Prime Video/Music, Kindle). It also lacks NFC when compared to the 6+. It's more expensive then a Z Force 2 which has Moto Mods and better screen but older SoC. The US availableility is the biggest key! The g6 seems to be gaining traction though as prepaid carriers like Cricket and Straight Talk are releasing variants of the G6 now. The cricket version is cheaper then the G6 but has 16gb storage vs 32gb in the G6. Seems like the G6 Play is most commonly used on Boost Mobile in the US from to me. Boost is sort of a hit or miss carrier mostly depending on how good Sprint networks are in an area I believe. They are one of the rare sprint resellers.

Was interested to recommend this to someone else, decided to check ROM support before doing so. But yeah it's sad how a generational update can cause such a dry patch here.

I mean the phone itself is a great phone and if I didn't care about having root or if I was just a simple person that just used a phone like normal I would say this phone is amazing like if your friend ain't really into rooting or custom ROMs then still I would recommend it to them. But if they are into this scene I would not recommend it at least yet.

I see, but I still wanted to keep that venue open, so I'll wait and see if the support comes. If not, then a Xiaomi phone it is. Could flash something like Official Lineage OS on a RN5 Pro, even the noobiest of users enjoy it.

For the g6+ I say give it about another month to three months. There is a telegram you can join if you want more updates on what's going in the g6+ community right now. I unfortunately have the g6 play so I can't say I have much hope for my device lmao. I also have a Moto z2 force so I just mainly use my g6 play as a phone and basic light mobile gaming and my z2 force for my heavier mobile gaming stuff like pubg mobile lol.

We have working LOS16 custom rom that is daily driver ready for the most part. LOS updates our vendor partition to make the GSI format more compatible with our device. We don't really have a reason to make a ton of custom roms anymore when a GSI img can be made and work on 50+ devices vs a custom rom which can work on only 1 device.

Thanks for the info

Yeah it's interesting how little is going on with the G6 platform compared to other phones. I picked up my G6 play for $80, a steal. It replaced my Moto x 2014 and my wife's Moto Z.
Yes there's occasional lag, but the phone itself looks and feels like a very high end device. I've also used the G6 which was much faster and the camera was nicer.
So for those saying the G6 "sucks" either haven't used it or are willing to pay $500+ for a "better" phone.

Pretty much this. The Play and the G6 shows that you don't need to spend $500+ to get a good phone.
Its like buying a BMW versus a Toyota. The $40,000 BMW depreciates to $18,000 in 2 years versus a $20,000 Toyota that will depreciates to $12,000. It's the same principle with phones. I'm thoroughly enjoying mine.

This is why I'm glad Treble exists. I've been running Pie for 2 weeks and it's still going great.

[Q] Other OS?

I know my moto x android version works flawlesly out of the box with some xposed mods just to personalize it, but today I decided to check the development section to see if there are some cool and interesting things to flash.
To my surprise I haven't seen much action there, I would have expected some port of firefox os or at least ubuntu (like there was for the Samsung Galaxy SIII) why is that? I'm not a developer so unfortunately I lack the knowledge to do something like that or I would.
Are there really no moto x owners wanting to try some (probably broken ) alternative OSes?

If you lack the knowledge, learn lol.. Not all of the Moto x can get an unlocked bootloader so development is restricted or limited to a certain extent for some devices like the Verizon Moto X or the ATT version . But even though that's no excuse, most people prefer stock and decide not to go through the hassle of porting a different OS. Just my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
Lack of interest, most likely. Firefox OS is a little pointless on devices with the hardware spec to run Android without batting an eyelash. As for Ubuntu Touch, there are a lot of devices not seeing it just due to a lack of interest in the OS itself from a lot of people (sadly). Only the most popular devices are likely to see ports of it.
That being said, I'd love to see Ubuntu Touch on Moto X, it's one of a few reasons I originally considered getting a Nexus 5 when i decided to get my Moto X.
Any non stock based ROMs we have still have major issues after a year.....can you imagine the issues with anything out of the ordinary like Ubuntu, Miui and other very different systems.
The X is just not a phone for developers or flashaholics. Its best run stock, (or stock based roms) maybe with Xposed for extra features. No one wants to lose their moto features either, and you only will have those on stock or stock based ROMs.
Things may change after the X stops getting updates. You may see more development then.
I have always wanted to run Ubuntu touch. I am trying to get it to work on my Samsung note pro but the selinux enforcement is a road block.

Android Auto doesnt work!

So I guess im super lucky and finally got Android Auto in my Sonata 2015 but it doesnt work with The Verizon Lg G3.... Its one of three phones that it doesnt work for supposedly... Im wondering if there is some kind of workaround? There has to be!? Ive tried multiple roms and options but cant seem to figure out how to get it to work for my device! If anyone can help me out that would be amazing!

Just FYI, it would be "1 of 3 of the MOST POPULAR new phones" running stock Lollipop+ that Google has tested.
I'm sure there is a huge list of less popular phones that aren't working, but Google has only done positive/negative testing on the most popular. Fragmentation is a problem for Google too.
Maybe that will make you feel slightly less bad.
Sorry I don't have an answer for your actual question.

yeah that's true but as far as Im aware if it has lollipop it should work regardless and if someone doesn't have lollipop I doubt they would have android auto. Its just annoying because every other variant of this phone works with android auto and it seems like something someone on XDA could fix before Verizon gives out an update... which would be months from now if that! Guess I just have to wait or buy a new phone which im too cheap to do!
Or flash cyanogen 12? (Not 12.1) the last 12 official build works fine.

This is why I'm not on Verizon, and why I don't buy phones with heavily OEM modified Android. You risk it not working with the latest and greatest that Google puts out.
I have always stuck with Nexus (or recently) Motorola devices. As much as I liked the G3 (and the G4 even more), I want to play with all things Android, so better to stay with vanilla Android as much as possible.

I always try and make my phones as vanilla android as possible. But I think Im just gonna buy a Nexus 6 and stick my sim into it for now and then sell my G3 on swappa. Ive never owned a Nexus phone before because I never had spare money but I have a new job (salary based finally!) So I think im gonna just treat myself, ive always wanted a Nexus phone as well!.
Happy Nexus Sixing!

My concern are Android updates

I think the specs for the OnePlus Three for the price are AMAZING and unbelievable, it's almost $150 less than the Nexus 6P, with 2016 flagship hardware, and the leaked pictures show it to be a very high quality crafted device. The new Three looks like a larger HTC 10, which is fine by me, as the 10 is a great smartphone.
But...
My biggest gripes with OPO are the slow Android updates. I recall Lollipop taking for god damn ever to officially make it out for the original One, like 6 months, or you could have installed the alpha CM11 at the time, which was pretty buggy until the bugs were worked out, obviously, but the official OnePlus One Lollipop OS update took a very long time.
This OnePlus Three will be lucky to see Android N within 90 days after the Nexus phones get it first in October, or you can install the alpha CM14 sooner on it, and live through all the kinks and bugs, that will have, while waiting for OPO to release N.
I thought one of the big features on these OPO phones being AOSP based, would have been super fast Android updates, not Nexus fast updates obviously, but at least faster than the skinned versions of Android like HTC, LG, Samsung, etc... but that hasn't been the case. I thought OnePlus would have the latest version of Android on them within like 30 days or so after Nexus phones, in reality they are worse than Samsung.
Bottom line; Great flagship hardware for a budget price. Beautiful design.
But...software is really amateur for an official professional phone release. I'd rather Cyanogen be back on board creating a stable pro CM13S for this phone. Oxygen OS still seems like some weekend development project.
OnePlus came late with their Android6.0 update for the OP2, so I share your concerns.
But the custom development for the OP3 will be great, so many ROMS there before the official updates.
And many other brands are also slow with updates, or even slower. (not an excuse for OnePlus )
I will go for the OP3 because:
to go for a device with guaranteed faster updates you limit your device choice, you will most likely pay a lot more, and the specs won't be much better, and the XDA development will most likely be worse.
So (expecting) slow updates is a legit disadvantage, but it doesn't win from the advantages in my opinion.
Good points thanks
Now let's see some real hands on reviews. How good is the AMOLED screen being in 1080p ? Is the build quality as high and great like HTC 10 ? Speaker sounds ? Feel in hand ?
I know hardware wise it's gonna be a champ.
I guess you did not see the news?
http://www.xda-developers.com/oxygenos-open-sourced-ahead-of-oneplus-3-launch/
Will that news get us Android N much faster ? I wanna see the OnePlus Three get Android N like 30 days after the Nexus phones, then i impressed.
I just got the one plus two yesterday, found out about the 3 two days after I ordered, ugh. No worries though, I believe it will be released by the 14th and that is well within my return period!
I can't even explain how cool just the box it comes in is! This is quality I would pay s7 prices for, hands down. I keep looking around for cops every time I pick up the phone, feels like I stole it! But seriously, the OTA's don't bother me a bit, they'll get here when they get here! I feel like the development here on xda will be enough to tide someone over until we get a proper image. I feel like this OP3 is going to be the banger for one plus all together.
The 1080p question the OP had, I honestly feel like that's just a marketing ploy by the big boys, can the naked eye really tell on a phone, even this size? For me personally, I don't notice anything! I honestly think you'll be able to look past both of those once you feel the box...lol!
Sent from my ONE A2005 using XDA-Developers mobile app
while we all are at xda, i don't really care about update from OP. You bet - the very first custom ROM will be available in weeks from June 14th and android N will be on OP# in days.
As someone who has paid top dollar for Samsung flagship phones, all I can say is that updates are slow here, too - maybe even slower than Oneplus .

obviously it will be slower getting ota's compared to nexus devices. but the op3 should have a good dev community so i wouldn't worry.

I wouldn't count on that. The oneplus team is very small and it took them longer than lg and Samsung to release marshmallow.

really bad comparing to other devices
I don't agree. We got official Paranoid omni and lineageOs, some stock custom rom with mods and some very talented dev into open Xperia device community. This phone has the lastest OS given by Google and enhanced by Sony (aosp source availaable even for 7.1.1).
We will have Android 8 and, with it the new update system... That means more custom rom possibility.

SailfishOS is an absolute deal breaker for me, as you will have to pay for SailfishOS for the Xperia X.
I don't see a reason why I should pay for a OS, which still lacks of features and probably will be released anyway when the xperia x is completly death.
Did you ever try SFOS? The usage is much cooler than
Android. And there will be an runtime env for Android apps.
I don't have a problem to pay for good things. But nobody
forces you to buy an Xperia X or pay for an alternative OS.
And you know, that an Android with Google services isn't
as free as you think?
Ok, it is getting offtopic.
If we'll could talk with Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 dev community, maybe we have other expectations with the development for this and Xperia X Compact device(s).

Their Snapdragon 650 is a good SoC for Development, more, searching fix some errors that Sony let...
The problem is our own Dev here, is very low...
IDK why.
We'll should to port some things from Xiaomi's Phones (Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon and Xiaomi Mi Max), or, fuse our Dev with them Dev for making "bigger" to Snapdragon 650 SoC, at least.

Guys please don't say our dev community strength sucks that's just unfair and of poor taste. WHY? Because.
Sony Xperia X wasn't much of a hit phone anyway it was expensive and was reviewed as a poor excuse for a flagship phone when it was released so nobody even bothered buy one there were better options back then and this phone did not deserve any attention in fact I only bought this phone because it was so damn cheap when I bought it last year. (from a 2nd hand seller for 150$)
I won't expect lots of devs and variety on custom ROMs for this phone, but I'm happy and grateful that we still got great devs here even if there's only a few.

Now, is the "most seller" together to the Xiaomi A1.
With this, maybe we could see something for make to develop even more for this SoC.
Community development is bad, but not the worst. Unfortunately, "Bootloader unlock allowed" is "No" on my phone so I can't use anything community developed/maintained regardless.
IMO it's alright. We're still under cover of Sony's AOSP and various official projects (Omni and PA), and outside of that there are Unofficial LOS and Treble by Chippa_ahttps://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=6994234 and Sjll respectively. Some of those ROMs are usable as daily driver.
Props to any and all developers who have been keeping this phone alive.

Just when I thought I was succinct. No one is building any ROM for this phone as of now. And many people who are holding this phone would likely not switch to a custom ROM because Android Pie would come soon, as soon as this fall. Please do not hold me for either statement, you being a senior member, you may be more knowledgeable about these things.

Ugh, I hate when they focus on the crap devices... why is it so hard to get away from crapoled and have even bare rom support?
The G6+ is just waiting for a dev to get the device. The funds were raised through donations and the device is on its way to India to the dev.
As for the "barebones" comment we have Los 15.1. That's android 8.1. Our devices ship with 8.0 and Moto has not released 8.1 and may skip right to Android 9(P/Pie). The Los rom we have is fully functional and working aside from Bluetooth calling. After flashing Los 15.1 you can then flash Gsi files which are generic system images. This will probably be the successor to roms imo. With Gsi you can flash Android P in a variety of flavors but beware of additional bugs as Pie has only just been official for a month roughly. So yes you could somewhat consider this barebones, I suppose, because Los15.1 had laid the ground work to where other roms could be ported with out much effort.
The g6+ will probably never have a huge variety of roms but atleast we have been promised los16 which should open enough doors to make an impact.
Tl;Dr the g6+ is the only G6 model with a dev. Dev will be receiving g6+ in a week or two(due to international shipping from the US to Indiana). We will get los16. Get a g6+ and be patient but forget the G6 and G6 Play variants.
