I'm on a family More Everything plan with shared data on Verizon and I finally became eligible for an upgrade. I'd like to know how I could use the upgrade to get a N6. What I've heard is that some people are upgrading to an iPhone 6+ and then selling it, then buying a N6 at full price. But I don't understand the details of that. Wouldn't the iPhone be activated/used at that point? How would I sell it at a new phone price? Also, I heard that Verizon charges a fee if the new phone isn't activated within a certain period after purchase. Would that be a problem if I bought the iPhone first (and didn't activate/open it), resold it, then waited for a N6 to become available to buy?

There is no problem buying a phone on contract, activating it, then giving it to someone else or selling it. The buyer takes a risk that you cancel your contract and skip out on the Etf, in which case Verizon will blacklist the phone. But they will not prevent you from selling the phone or someone else activating it. The buyer simply brings the phone to Verizon to obtain a SIM card.
So if I went into my VZW account online and ordered an iPhone 6+ with my upgrade, would it arrive in a retail box unactivated or does VZW activate it for you with the SIM installed?

It arrives unactivated with a SIM tied to your account. If your intent is to sell, then I would activate it, then switch back to your old phone. You could just sell it unactivated, but your account might get stuck with a pending activation..which might eventually fall off.
Will my old sim remain activated after I activate the new one? I'm upgrading from a DNA which uses a micro sim. If it takes a while to sell the iPhone I'd like to keep using my old phone. I've never sold a phone before.

It will not. Just go to a Verizon store and they will switch you back for free. Might be able to call and do it.
Hm, so would it make more sense in that case to buy the N6 first (whenever it becomes available), then use my upgrade to get an iPhone and resell it? That way I could immediately activate the sim in the N6 and not even touch the iPhone. Or does the sim have to first be activated with the iPhone because that's what VZW is expecting to see on the account?
So I was just wondering if any of you think it's worth upgrading to the Pixel XL for only $240 as Verizon is giving a deal this Black Friday. Should I stick with my N6 until next year or take the offer?
Or if anyone has a better upgradeable phone which supports CDMA

The catch is I have to sign a 2 year contract which I actually have no problem with, but I'm sure they're going to notice that the device isn't active on my account since I sold it.

You need to add the total price of the 2 year contract to the price of the new device.
Than estimate the costs using your N6 for 2 years without that contract.
Can be helpful to make a decision.

well my N6 is already paid off, so it would just be the extra $10/month added to my bill for the next 2 years.

I have Sprint so I also have CDMA as well so it is an issue finding good phones. The 2 year contact you sign with Verizon is basically a service agreement, meaning you are going to use their service for another 2 years before you have the ability to just bail. Afterwards it goes month to month, at least with Sprint. With Sprint anyways, the phone isn't an issue, assuming the 2 year contract is a purchase not a lease which I suspect it is. For example, my brother signed a 2 yr contract with Sprint, got a Galaxy, then broke it after a year from dropping it too much. He is using some old phone he bought used. No problem. I just got a Nexus 5X after having my Nexus 6 for just one year. Sprint hasn't called either of us demanding why our phones are not being used. We just agreed legally to use their service for another 2 years. If you don't plan on leaving Verizon anyways the contract is negligible. It's just that if you get rid of the pixel and something happens to your Nexus 6, you will be on your own until the 2 yr contract is up.
I've been looking at the Pixel XL new in box like yours would be and they are going for a lot right now given that they are sold out. I highly suggest you look at eBay. New Pixel XL in a box are being priced at $900+
You could buy it at $240 , sell it even at a slightly mark up at $825, then keep the $585. That's very cheap esp for the XL.....

The OP likely is going to keep using Verizon's service anyways whether he buys the Pixel or not. The only difference is if he wanted to leave Verizon or plans to then the contract would lock him in until its over. In the US, most people who are on the major networks (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile) generally stay with their carrier, there isn't a lot of movement.......the cheap pre-paid, lower tier networks is a different story................

Thx for the info. In the Netherlands and probably in more EU-countries we have 'sim only contracts'.
Buying a device yourself and a sim only contract is mostly cheaper.

240 + (24 * 10) is the real price you have to pay for the Pixel.
That's cheap compared with prices here in the Netherlands. (Still > $1000,- for a Pixel XL).

Keep in mind the Verizon Pixel XL has a locked bootloader. I believe it's a terrible deal because of that, and you could do just as well simply by buying a 6P from Amazon between Black Friday and the end of the year.

well there is a tool released to unlock the bootloader of a Verizon Pixel device (dePixel8). But it could be possible that a future update may force-lock the bootloader again, which is something to think about I guess.
The last time the bootloader on a Verizon device was bypassed, it was the Galaxy S4. Verizon's next update patched the hole that allowed people to do that. While I admit forgetting about dePixel8, it's a virtual lock that Verizon will patch the flaw that allows the bootloader to be unlocked on their next update, when they decide to release it.
That's the other bad thing about getting a Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL. You're at the mercy of Verizon for updates, not Google.
Unlock it, flash the google factory image and disable ota updates to be sure. Assuming you can get it before Google patches the bypass.
Assuming it can be unlocked.
It's up to the OP what he wants to do. However, he needs to be aware of the potential pitfalls of purchasing a device from a carrier on contract. The locked bootloader with the potential of not being able to unlock it and carrier interference with the updates are but two of them. Getting a phone from a carrier for a reduced price is never a good deal. Buying direct is better.
Verizon. Bootloader policy. Possible bloatware (its Verizon do it's impossible to believe something shady won't be in there). Pricing. Nuff said...
I saw this promo. I'd pass. Usually the benefit of a contract is to get the immediate savings right away while forfeiting the ability to move carriers. Here you sign a contract, pay out the a$$ upfront, then get a trickle benefit over 2 yrs. I'd just get a 6p over black friday if you'd like to switch.
It's a good price. But I opted to finance through project Fi instead. I'm not a heavy data user so my monthly is about the same as a contract would be with Verizon. Verizon's service is arguably better but I'm satisfied with Fi, and I really like how well it works internationally, making it a better value to me. Plus I'm not confident that Verizon will release timely updates.
Once you unlock it using DePixel8, you flash google factory images and there's no way Verizon can relock it with future updates.

maybe, but back when I had a S5 and needed tech support for it to get it replaced, Verizon representative notified me over the phone that they wont do anything as they were able to see that I wasn't on a stock ROM and that I was rooted. Although the representative just told me to reflash the stock ROM and keep it unrooted and to call back the next day.
Nonetheless I'm sure they will be able to do the same with my Pixel and void my warranty, best to just buy it from Google directly and avoid all of that crap.
Thanks everyone for your input and advice
The 10$ price is for the 32gb Pixel only, which is a good price. The 128gb Pixel is 15$ * 24mo, the 32gb XL is 20$ * 24mo and the 128gb XL is 25$ * 24mo.
There's still a savings to be had on all variants however not enough of a savings on the 128gb XL version for me, I was actually hesitating giving to my unlimited to get two 128gb XL version if it was 240$ a phone, not the case.

It's indeed 'better' to buy a phone separately from the provider. Here (Netherlands) we have many people paying too much, because the 2-year contact automatically continues. Many forget to change the contract after 2 years.

I ordered mine from Samsung.com and my biggest pro was the $425.00 discount for prior Note 7 owners. I also have a S8+ and from what I've heard the unlocked version doesn't have wifi calling but I might be wrong.
No real cons for grabbing the unlocked version other than native video calling will not work on the unlocked version. Promptness of updates from T-Mobile vs Samsung direct is also something to consider. I'm speaking from the point of view of a stock T-Mobile N8 vs an unlocked N8.

I dont qualify for the discount,. The dumb asses as Samsung just emailed saying the Unlocked version aint gonna ship until October, whereas my wifes T Mobile version will be Sept 14. Cocksuckers, maybe I should just order the T mobile version? BTW all in good faith on my side
pros are the discount but you can also buy the tmo variant from Samsung as well. I almost bought an unlocked one from Samsung but I found out if you buy the carrier variant from Samsung, Tmobile can unlock from the day you receive it even if its financed through Samsung. Now I am betting it will be like s7 and s8 to where you can odin/adb the unlocked firmware onto the tmo device to get rid of the carrier bloat.
now the unlocked normally doesn't mean that much to me because I plan on staying with TMO anyway but I really want a Deep sea blue when it becomes available so I need to resell the one o have. I would wait until the blue is released but I cant pass up the note 7 discount. since I can unlock the TMO device on day 1, it will be easier to sell when it comes to that point. I believe all the snap dragon phones are built the same just have different software per carrier. so If my TMO device is sim unlocked, I can flash the stock Verizon firmware and will look/work just like a stock Verizon device(lte bands, apps etc).

Ok, because you didn't qualify for the discount, it's just weird you're willing to pay full price (and lose $900+) and stick with Samsung. For the TMo deal, the downside for that is adding and keeping a line and having to resell the 2nd phone. If you're keeping to lines anyway (you can port one of your numbers to the new line and cancel the current one where it came from) and you wanted 2 phones anyway. The only downside in your case would be paying in full for 2 phones and waiting a few months to get the second phone's refund (prepaid card) to come in.

Ive currently got 4 lines on my simple choice unlimited plan. Two of the lines are "free" when they did the promo last year, I only pay tax on each of the two free lines.
Its my understanding that to get the BOGO Note 8 from tmo , I would need to buy one on EIP and ADD another line for the "free" note 8 to my account?

Yes, that's correct. Is anyone using the "free" extra lines? If no one is, maybe cancel one of them now, add the line for the promo, then cancel it once the prepaid card comes in. If all 4 lines are in use, I'm not sure if what the line limit for Simple Choice, but I believe you can go up to 8. If that's the case, add a fifth line and cancel it once the prepaid card comes in. The downside to this is you might lose the bill credits for one of the free lines, but $10 a month extra is less than $930 for a free Note 8. Since you're buying 2 Notes anyway from Samsung, just get the 2 Notes on EIP with T-mobile and and pay them off in full once you receive the prepaid card (you can pay one off WITH the prepaid card so you don't have to worry about how to spend it), or keep them on EIP if you were planning to finance with Samsung.

The two "free" lines, If I cancel one, then the other will be charged as normal, that was part of their promo terms and conditions. Or I could just cancel both. However, the lines are useful for me , since one is also used in a Tab S2 international version for voice and data. I remember their prepaid card shennagins, it took T mobile about 9 weeks until I got mine when they did that promo to pay off my ATT contract back when I joined tmo a few years ago. I had to pay ATT about 800$ or so, then after 9 weeks I got a mastercard from T Mobile. Luckily I had the cash at the time to pay off the ATT termination fees , else it would have gone into collections. Left a bad taste in my mouth. As did T mobiles last promo, in respect of the two free lines I got. It took them 6 months to fix billing issues, meaning I was charged $40 per each of those 2 free lines for that duration before credits kicked in. Was terrible. Hence I dont trust T Mobile nor their promos anymore.
I currently have my account and bill the way I like it. Hence getting the phones from Samsung and leaving T Mobile and their devices EIP, JOD shennanigans clear LOL

The bootloader is the same locked one on all the Snapdragon models. Unlocked means carrier SIM unlocked, so you can use it with any SIM card that fits.
I ended up saying screw it and ordering an Exynos version because I hate not being able to customize an expensive piece of property that is entirely mine.

She hates her iPhone so jumped on the note 8... Bouncing all over the house all happy again. They offered us $400.00 off if we turn in a phone like I have a Galaxy 5 I can still keep my pixel and get the note 8 so I might just do it.

Verizon also has a trade in deal the same if not better than Samsung. Verizon does not require the previous purchase of the note 7. Problem for me is I have a g4 and iPhone se. Samsung gives me 425 and Verizon only 240. Its for me and my wife so multiply that by 2, big money at that point.
I never use any verizon apps and dont thing I ever used wifi calling, are those the only things I lose?
Same hardware with different firmware. I would get unlocked , if you use wifi calling and other Verizon features, flash the Verizon firmware.

I was debating between the two myself for quite a while (until like 5 minutes ago when I submitted my preorder for an unlocked phone through Samsung).
Both Verizon and Samsung have confirmed (via webchat so...) that the internals of all the phones sold in the United States are the same. Per both Verizon and Samsung have told me that all features will work (HD voice, LTE+, wifi calling, etc).
The unlocked phone through Samsung is on backorder and wont ship until the week of 10/1, but Verizon told me the phones preordered through them will still be delivered by the 14th.
I went with the unlocked simply because its like $30 cheaper, I dont intend to turn in my current phone, Verizon's website wont actually let me preorder, and I'm wary of preordering through Verizon on the chance they **** with my old school unlimited plan.
Like I said before my biggest concern is Verizon will sell it to you unlocked but if you buy it from Samsung they will lock it for Verizon. That's my dilemma. If Samsung is just saying that they are locking it for Verizon but they don't actually lock it cuz the Verizon doesn't really lock it I would get the Verizon version.

Why would Samsung lock the unlocked version to a carrier when they sell the carrier locked version as well?

I am trading my S7Edge for the Note 8 on Verizon. I preordered on Friday Sept 1st evening late, the phone is being delivered tomorrow, Tuesday via FedEx. Just FYI.

The Verizon branded phone (both through Samsung and through Verizon) are locked to Verizon, however Verizon will unlock the phone once you've paid it off (although if you bought it through Samsung I guess they wouldn't know you're on an installment plan and they should unlock it for you). They may also unlock it if you're traveling internationally and will keep your Verizon contract, I'm not 100% on that. When I asked about that they said I could just add Verizon's international calling plan to my plan which got a big ol eye roll from me.

That's the question I asked the rep at Samsung. And that's why I was afraid to take a chance by getting the Verizon version.

Not sure if it matters now, but I pre-ordered directly through Verizon, received my note 8 on the 5th, and my old-school unlimited data plan was untouched. Also - tethering using the sim-card trick still works: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...erizon-udp-t3668655/post73682021#post73682021
win.
My main reason for not going with the Verizon version is that they remove too much of the Samsung stuff essentially things like Samsung cloud and i think even Samsung pass. Never the less i think i only use the hd voice as of now with my s8+. So I'm still waiting to see what developes here in the coming days and then make my choice whether ill go with the unlocked version or Verizon. Verizon get your grubby paws of the phones but hey good looking out on the service superior.

Is anybody else having problems with the My Verizon app on the Unlocked version? It keeps telling me I need a code to get into my account but it keeps failing to send the code for me to verify my account? I did an online chat with Verizon earlier about this and they're pretty worthless.

It's working fine for me.
Hello I was thinking about getting a Pixel device to replace 2 phones I currently carry. Was wondering if a dual SIM config would work well with these 2 carriers, and whether it's better or easier to put Verizon or T-Mobile on the eSIM?
Also is it possible to use data simultaneously from both, I've read conflicting reports?

Verizon is pretty easy although you might need to call for a scan code. But that takes all of 5 minutes. Not sure about TM but I heard it was just as easy. I've been doing this for a couple of years now, first with Fi and Verizon (physical sim) and then I got rid of Fi and went with both lines on Verizon. One on the eSim and the other physical sim.
You need to select one sim for data. You can change it rather easily in network settings. Calls and text can default to one or select each time which I find to be a pain. Depends on your situation though.
@DrWowe Just a little update. The Pixel 5 is out of stock at the Google store and probably won't be coming back. That leaves Amazon or other 3rd party sellers. With that in mind be careful about which version you buy meaning it needs to be carrier unlocked. If you are thinking of rooting you need to be doubly careful. Or.. you can wait for the P6 and buy directly from Google. Whichever you choose good luck.
Fair enough. I'm assuming the eSim configurations will be similar on the 5a or 6, I haven't decided which one to buy yet. I guess it won't be a 5 after since it's discontinued and I only want to buy unlocked from the manufacturer.

I'd find a BNIB Pixel 5. No way I could justify paying for the Pixel 5a. If you think the 6 wont be too large for you, I'd get that.
Just my .2 cents

We are really in a bind here if you want a smaller device. On Swappa there are zero P5 new or mint for sale. Even very limited stock at Amazon and you'd have to have your head examined to buy off Ebay. There are none available there either that are US versions unlocked. These are becoming a collectors item and as such will probably go for a pretty penny if we can keep them in decent condition. The only premium device I can find under 6.3" is the iPhone 13 at 6.1. This is not good.
