Hi all,
what about Linux port for Kaiser? Does anybody work on it? At least kernel boot via Haret, is it possible?
Thanks a lot for reply
Hello mate,
Aren't you happy with WM6? Its much more user-friendly than Linux. There has been experiments with porting linux to PPCs but its not that stable or good either. Strick to WM6

That is not question of WHAT DO I LIKE, it is question of FREEDOM TO CHOOSE.
And BTW I like Opie on my iPAQ.

There are no CPU docs, so
those who have such device need to do more address space / hardware event tracing.
The known data is gathered here

I asked HTC they reply directly ask developers:

There is CPU diagram available:

What about Android?
I wonder if HTC will ever release a firmware update for the Kaiser based on Android (Linux based), as i understand they are working very closely with Google .
I also find out, that MSM7200 is connected to the PM7500. I made changes to wiki page mentioning this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
Google posted few patches to initial support for MSM7200 chipset:
http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2007/11/android-sdk-msm7k-kernel-patches-and.html
I'm a linux user myself, and I'm all for options. However, I don't see someone taking the time to install Linux on an existing phone. It doesn't seem very practical. Check out the openmoko project instead.

MSM7200A, not the MSM7200. Some drivers are very useful for Linux on Kaiser, while the core CPU features (irq/gpio) need to be rewritten from scratch.

Check openmoko for what :
Buggy and underpowered hardware ?
Closed source, patent ridden GPS software ?
Unfinished GSM software even with a team of paid developers ?

I have nothing against openmoko, but IMHO they should fulfill their promises
as being THE "true" free phone software project.

YEAH you are right, but hopefully bootloader stuff will be almost same etc...I got in contact with google guy asking him if they do have access to the MSM7200 chipset documentation. Hopefully he will share at least part of it
Well 50 USD to project which will fully run Linux on my Kaiser!!!
After using a Linux phone for almost a year I will never ever want to hear about this thing they call an OS again.
Lack of software, very poor A2DP and Bluetooth support in general, having to restart phone after every single program installed, no modern programming languages support. Those are a few of the things that make me want a phone with WM so badly.
But hey, that's just me, you install whatever you like on your phones. Just make sure you can go back to WM, because you will most likely want to.
Smaniac,
Glad to see you here old chap. Does that mean you've bought the Kaiser? And its not as bad as you make it out to be
Somebody knows new Windows 7 for mobile ?
???
Dude I don't think that is on the horizon yet. Microsoft is still trying to get 6.5 to look good.

WM7 isn't even in closed beta stage yet. And when it IS eventually released, it will NOT run on the Kaiser, ever.
[edit]
I removed my post becasue I do not know what I was talking about
The last I heard was Microsoft released strong minimum specs for Windows Mobile 7 devices to ensure the new mobile OS runs well and gives a good consumer experience.
Here are some informational links:
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=7528
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/windows-mobile-7-chassis-concept-confirmed-by-microsoft-not-det/
http://uxevangelist.blogspot.com/2009/05/windows-mobile-7-ui-still-under.html
last thing i heard about it was:
Microsoft has confirmed that the current team of 1,000 developers, working on Windows Mobile 7, are planning to feature social networks as a key element of Windows Mobile 7. In a company job posting, spotted by Mobile Tech World, officials are looking for a senior program manager in the Windows Mobile 7 Communications Group: The Windows Mobile 7 Communications group is building experiences on the phone that present your content - friends, pictures, messages, events - to you in immersive and engaging ways. Our vision is to bring social networks to life by integrating them into the core experience of the phone.

Moved to general as no real substinance for ROM Development MS are still refining 6.5 so really no news except what others posters above.
Leaving open just incase someone come up with a nuget about WM7...
Peace,
stylez.
Newbie help please ! I have just got an unlocked T-Mobile MDA Vario 3 with windows 6.5 professional on it and want to download an android app (ebay) I have the link for it but it says I need the Android market Place app first, where can I get this from, Thank you.....
you have WM so i dont think its possible to run an Android app
haha... Have you heard of an OS? Short for Operating System. Mac is one, Windows is one, Linux is one. Now, you can't run a Windows application on a Mac, right? Well, It's the same for a mobile OS to (Windows Mobile, Android, iOS).
The Android App Store is only available on a phone running Android OS.
However, you can port Android to your WinMo quite easily, thats what the whole "Android Development Forum" is about.

Just got word of windows 8 with support for arm processors was released. Looking forward to see if anyone can port it to our lovely touchpads.
Sent from my HP Touchpad using XDA Premium
Well someone in the other thread said a good idea is to develop a bounty to get it done, in that thread someone calcjulated about $200 in donations for it. I add $10 more here.

I am probably going to catch Hell for this from at least a handful of people, but I need to point this out:
Any sort of port of Windows, in any form, to the TouchPad without the developer first receiving permission from Microsoft (which you won't get) and the user of said port purchasing a license from Microsoft is illegal. I vote to have this thread and any more like it that appear pulled.
I was actually unaware of this fact. I apologize for creating this thread then. And please pull it if necessary.

It should be fine and dandy if we use the development builds, but not the full releases. Development builds are used for development, which is generally what happens here. Once the full licensed versions come out, we cannot use those without the consent of Microsoft.

exactly. Ive been running windows 8 dev preview on my desktop for months now, and I didnt pay a dime. They install a kill switch on them, so whatever development we make may be short lived, because i dont see Microsoft selling a ARM version to the general public. I think that they will only make it available to OEM's in the long run.
Well a dev could always release some sort of tool or method to turn a Windows 8 iso into a ROM, without actually having to release a full version of windows. We could all use our own legal copies then to make our own ROM.

So its basically the same situation as Windows Mobile ROMs back in the day. It was a grey area and since you couldn't buy a Windows Mobile upgrade ROM, cooked ROMs were the only option. I haven't heard of Microsoft taking any action against all of the WM roms that were posted over the years.

The difference is that those WM devices had licenses for at least some version of WM, making it a gray area. The Touch pad has nothing of the sort. There is no gray ara for it. None the less, I am curious to see where development goes with this.
Nothing to see here folks, the leak was a fake.

Exactly right, this thread is ok for discussion, but we can't go down this road for the TouchPad. Sorry.
Sorry if this question seems dumb. I jumped through all the hoops to get a student dev account set up (running WP8) - but now I'm unsure where to find apps made by other developers. Can anyone help? Thanks.
This is windows 8 not windows phone 8. There is no homebrew wp8 homebrew repository that I know of either. If a dev makes a xap available it will probably be uploaded wherever he sees fit.

Upto the developer. There is no big site that they all upload to. Each one tends to be on a little community forum, might stick the XAP as an attachment on one of his forum posts. Or perhaps on his blog or his personal github. There is no giant site listing tonnes of homebrew XAP's. Closest you might find is to get out of the windows 8 section of XDA and go find the windows phone 8 developers section, there are a few apps stuck in there. Otherwise, you have probably wasted time getting your student license if homebrew was what your after.
And yeah. This is the windows 8 section of XDA. Windows 8 as in the PC/Laptop operating system, not windows phone 8, the 2 have little in common.

Okkie dokkie. Thanks. (p.s. my thread was moved here from that section, not sure why)
For what it's worth, I post my apps in Dev&Hacking sub-forum under WP8, with the notable ones in my signature. That's not much yet, but I was late getting a WP8 device. The other devs mostly post in the same place, in the Apps&Games sub-forum (lots there, but it's mostly betas of store apps, not homebrew), in the General sub-forum, or on sites like WPCentral.

I don't appreciate the insulting, in case you haven't noticed moderators can move threads. This was originally posted in windows 8, later moved here.
