Battery life in Pie vs Oreo? Is it worth it? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Hello.
Today my phone has been asked to be updated to Android Pie, 47.2.A.4.45, Android Pie.
My biggest concern is the battery life, after such update.
Can I have some qualified input if I should upgrade or not in the current state in regarding to the battery life of Pie vs Oreo.?
Is it possible to downgrade again to Oreo via flashtool, if not satisfied?

Testing right now, will let you know

Looking forward to your findings. How exactly are you testing?

Masive battery drain Fter Pie Update in Sony Xperia Xz1
I Have Masive battery drain after the new Pie Update it lost 34 % only in 8h in standby. In Oreo in that time it would still be in mid 90's % So yeah this update is kinda annoying hope Sony will fix it I Have Masive battery drain after the new Pie Update it lost 34 % only in 8h in standby. Good day.
I have tested Oreo vs PIE in my phone and have noticed that i had about 15% better battery with PIE.
Tested with Gsam app and using Customized DE 47.2.A.4.45 ROM.

It can't be right ??? then why i have massive battery drain with my XZ1 ?? even after i restarted the phone ?

I updated via OTA to Pie 2 days ago and i have a very good battery life. I charged yesterday to 100% and my mobile is after 25h still by 35% and display using time until now over 8h so battery life is amazing!

Someone reported a problem with smart backlight control on Pie. If you have it enabled, try disabling it and see if it helps.

Hi.
-How did you test with Gsam? Did you look into SOT, and did you have same usage pattern?
-Also did you do an OTA without factory reset or repair of phone from PC companion?

Im in android world systems since android 2.1
Guys, ALWAYS make a hard reset after a "sweet change" software (7->8->9 etc).
Its always vastly improvement with a HR. Its like formatiing windows. Unfortunetly, android doesnt play well with the old cache, so always make a HR and you will find instantly after it that your batterys drains less then before
Ps; my battery is better with Pie than Oreo, but Oreo software were snappier.

I will be very sad, if Pie is less snappy than Oreo.
This, stability and Battery life is the absolute most important factors in a phone today for me.
If Oreo is more snappy I will stay with that. I dont want programmed obsolescence, as the XZ1 compact, is by far one of my favoite phones.
There is nothing more I hate, than a slow phone, when it should be snappy. The XZ1 compact was flying in the beginning of its life. It is still fast, but not like in the beginning.
I will create another thread for snappiness, to see if thats actually an issue many people have.

Good day.
I made 3 tests in both of the OS.
1st- Simple 4G and screen on for an hour
2nd- Running a game for an hour
3rd- Screen on and downloanding a file for another hour.
In the end, i had an 15% difference.
For my usage was enough to convince me to upgrade.

I have slightly worse battery performance on Pie than on Oreo. Now after a full day I'm sitting with 52% battery left and 3 hours 57 minutes of screen on time. Mostly Wi-Fi. Also the device doesn't feel as snappy and smooth. Animations look a bit jerky sometimes. I haven't done a factory reset (yet) as it takes so much time and these problems do not bother that much...
Oh yeah, also I hate that new volume control. It looks nice but isn't very practical.

Dont get it wrong. the phone is still fast. But on oreo you click on adjust (for ex.) and it oppens instantly. On Pie, it has the smooth transition. Its not bad, its just isnt snappy and ridiculous fast like in Oreo.
i dont think staying in oreo is cool. You'll miss the security updates,. Thats just my opinion though.

If you make a HR you will notice how better your battery will be. I know its annoying but is always recomended after a big update.
But if not, give it a few days and a reboot to let the system settle itself down.
Battery should theoreticly be better on Pie than Oreo, since it has some better AI on this issue...

I used the software repair function on the Xperia Companion to update to Pie a few days after it came out in Italy, and in the past 2 months I had very few issues. The worst issue is the Netflix app that from time to time freezes the entire phone when I open it, I have to cancel all the data for it to work again.
Battery life is good (perhaps slightly better than on Oreo), Speed is similar (once again, perhaps slightly better, but it was already snappy enough with Oreo) and I enjoy the -very few- changes. One thing I like is that the volume slider has about 20-25 levels instead of about 10.
Anyway, I received no updates since then. I'm still stuck with the October 2018 security updates.
Short version: I had very few issues and I believe that most issues other people are experiencing happen because they did not hard reset the device before/after updating.

I vote for "not worth it" .

Pie feels snappier here, also battery life is a little bit better (perhaps because it now controls battery usage of "not often used" apps).
Only thing: It still does not like AVM router or repeater. If connected an wifi is left on it uses like 6-7% battery per hour (standby).
I disable wifi in standby and use another devices wifi for my phone. (~0,5-0,6% usage in standby)

I updated to Pie and I'd really like to go back to Oreo (less battery drain)!
Unfortunately I'm not able to unlock bootloader or use another ROM and that really sucks!
Any help to solve my problems (unlock bootloader, install another ROM) would be very much appreciated!

It's better. 23 hours off charger, 1 hour screen on time playing games, and I'm still at 44%.View attachment 4686404

Not all pies are the same.
It would be nice to have more info next to "it's great" or "it's bad" Such as
- firmware version
- was it OTA or flashing
- did you factory reset your phone after the update
Tnx.

Just a shot in the dark, but you have a lot of widgets running, and your over clocked, as well as having a live background, my guess is its draining as it should be!
My 2 cents: I just lost 30% in 2 days with my setup... try it out.
Switch to intersectRaven's 33.4 Kernel (the 925mV Version, Latest Release)
Download Task Manager (i use the regular one with the little green android)
Setup Task Manager to ignore only 2 or 3 important apps (like the clock if you use an alarm) Also, set it up to kill all tasks 5 mins after screen goes black.
That should increase your battery life quite a bit.

Well the kernel is undervolted so having it overlocked supposedly doesn't decrease battery life. As far as the widgets and live wallpaper go, I thought they don't use that much battery?.

Nope! I can drain a quarter of my battery, at home, while using 3G, just browsing the internet, in about that time...

Well I never thought of it that way. The articles weren't that long (3-6 paragraphs) but then again I am not sure how much drain NewsRoom has when it fetches them.

Not sure about fetching, probably not much. But screen being on (and probably with white background and non-minimal brightness) for the time of reading drains a lot.
I finally rooted last night and flashed cyanogen latest ROM and now suddenly have the same poor battery life. I used stock for 3 months and this is an enormous difference than stock. I'm at 59 minutes and down to 76 % already. I have no apps installed or any widgets since I only just flashed. Stock cyanogen. So why is cyanogen So power hungry?
Pure calendar.
I totally respect the programmer and love his apps. But everytime batery has been an issue removing the widget has usually been tied to better battery life. Placebo ?..maybe..
I got terrible life with Cyn 6.05
Helix is supposedly a battery raper. That + Pure would suck Batt life like mad for me.
Both 5.05 and Froyo give me much better results.

Yeah it definitely is Cyanogen. Since I flashed Froyo, my battery life has doubled in comparison to CM 5.0.6 (I hear that 5.0.7 is even worse).

I had terrible problems on CM 5.05 and 5.06. I tried what I thought was everything: setcpu, taskmanagers, every kernel known to xda. Nothing helped.
And then, one day, when I had stopped trying, I noticed I was getting good battery life again. What changed? My main suspects are replacement launchers, such as Helixlauncher etc., wifi turned on when no wifi is available -- this was big one!
And apps trying to update all the time.
Your screen was on for 44 minutes out of 74 minutes? I'm going to label that a big fat duh.
juice defender works great doubled my batterylife
I am a battery cheapstake and get pretty good battery about a day and change, with one hour on the phone and some google searching/mapping and surfing and a game or two, if you do the following:
Keep screen at minimal. You can increase it on command from the command widget if you really it, like when outdoors in bright sunlight. It takes 1 second to change and it can save you tons of battery during the course of the day.
Same goes with keep the battery to turn off after 15-30 seconds. Again, over the course of the day it adds up.
Remove live-wall papers, they are nothing but a drain. I am an photographer enthusiast so I use my own photography, a dark shot to save on battery as well. Plus it is nice to show your own stuff than someone elses.
Use no polling widgets, unless you need to. I only have 4 widgets and none pull down anything from the net at anytime. If I need twitter, it takes 2 seconds to open the app.
One of the widgets I DO have is the 2G/3G switch. When the Nexus is in my pocket, I do not need it to download/upload/sync with anything at lighting speeds. So if anything gets updated, it will be slower but I do not care. If I need the phone, I switch the puppy to 3G and fly. Savings are HUGE and guarantees my phone will have juice when I NEED it, and not use up while on standby.
I read that having task killers is a waste of time on Android. Since it is not a Windows device, ram and apps are not handled the same way. I used to kill everything on site on my old Tytn so I thought it natural. However, I read that Android is fairly good at memory managment. So for now, what I do is back out, out of all my apps --unless they have an 'exit' option. I am currently experimenting with that, after using a number of task killers from the market I think I have a fair idea of what I should and should not expect. I will let you know.
If you really want to make a difference, uncheck 'background sync' on settings under the sync option. If I need to check my email, I can again, pull it down fast. I know a few people who want to have everything push, however, unless you are that popular that you get emails\twitter & facebook notifications every 2-minutes or because of work then it is not really needed.
It is a bit of a trade-off, but you can't expect to have a running a 1Mhz chipped, huge screened, live wall-papered, widget-polling that is always connected to the internet device and expect it to to last you more than a day with an -in my opinion, fairly small- sub 1500mAh battery. If you had, say
<3000mAh, ahhh..., then that would be something.
Feels a bit cramped but i like the swipe to the media section. Either way great to have options good luck with getting it to work fully.
5.0.7 worked wonders for me batterywise.. better than stock AND slightly better than Froyo.
Is weird that some phone works better than other phones with the same ROM...funny..
I would revert back to Cyanogen if the wifi could stay constantly on. Thats the only thing stopping me.

The Sony Xperia SP, A heartbreaker Smartphone

Hi, I bought this phone a month ago, I bought that actually looked like a very good phone, analyze their characteristics, not only its design, and discard the possibility of buying the Samsung S3 Mini, I think it was a mistake :crying:
This Xperia SP is really a headache, the first thing I knew I was bad at was his poor WiFi, later learned of the problem of the screen, which to place the phone on a flat surface the touch becomes useless (I is how to fix it), and now the battery, then I have seen pictures that the battery will last up to 2 days, I was never happened in 14 hours, or when you use it the first time, now active or inactive so I Sstamina gives up to 7 hours, which sucks .
Originally came with compiling 12.0.A.1.257 and decided to upgrade to the 12.0.A.2.245 to see if suddenly improved, big mistake, the 2245 presents many problems in the stability of the OS, the screen flashes when using certain applications , Stamina mode is "Arrangement" a bit, as the cell I last up to 12 hours, but it's all over.
In conclusion I am determined to get rid of this phone, and all who ask for me, I gonna Scream, NEVER BUY THAT MTF CELL, which by the way is a bit expensive for the problems to come.
Sorry, my english is not very good :silly:

To be honest with you- the WiFi does suck on the sp, even though there are many fixes none of which will work 100% . Ive come across alot of problems with my sp also, keyboard wont pop up, walkman crashes when using certain apps. But on the plus note there is deffo an upside to the sp compared to most other mid range smart phones out there.
I have smashed my screen on my sp and have no warrenty- so im switching over to a s3 mini, simply because a new white digitiser for my phone would cost me £135.
Play around with your phone first see if you can make any good of it before you sell up

Whats your screen on time? Also ho do you use your phone? Heavy gaming or light texting only?
Things will always matter when you want to compare battery life. So give us more details. Install Wakelock detector or BetterBatteryStats to know what is eating up the battery on your phone and then work on eliminating the factor. Cheers man!

I think you should. Your Android OS is using too much battery. Hit on it and check which process is using the maximum battery.
Once you've charged your battery to 100%, go to Apps, All, and look for eco mode controller. Click on force stop and after 5 seconds or so, clear data. Then reboot your phone and use it normally. Check out my best battery life so far (attached images)

Battery life not quite as good as I hoped
The battery life on my xperia SP is not bad but it is no better than my previous xperia neo which had only a 1500mah battery versus 2370mah.
Many reviewers have commented that they can get through 2 days.
I can only make 1 and a bit. The key problem appears to be the screen. I can use the screen for about 4 hours/day before I'm out of juice, some reviewers claim 7 hours. Thats a big difference. Using it outside of the time is always going to be worse but screen on time is a bit disappointing for me. Stamina with screen off seems reasonable but again not outstanding. I lost 13% between the morning and lunchtime without doing anything but 15 minute syncing, I use a battery saver, not stamina mode as I don't want to shut down all my apps and have no data at all when screen is off.
Phone is only 2 weeks old, can I recalibrate the battery? Seems to stay on 1% for a while too. On the contrary, my wifi reception is really good. Better than any other phone I've had.

Battery life on standby is perfectly good for me – a few people have said that the estimate Stamina mode gives is based on recent usage. So if you haven’t had the device very long of have just had a big session on your phone the estimate might not be very accurate.
Most mornings the battery is 0, 1 or 2% down on the reading before I went to sleep…deep sleep is being enforced.
However, I don’t think the battery consumption with screen on is anything special – not bad, not exceptional.
It’s a really good phone IMO. I admit WiFi seems badly implemented and you shouldn’t need the tweak which seems to fix it for most rooted users (all manufacturers seem to still release phones with Wifi problems). But with this tweak in place I get better wifi than my old xperia (it had a custom kernel that gave it awesome range) and better than my wife’s Samsung S2. There’s a part of my house where we couldn’t get any signal for my old phone or laptops – amazingly the SP can connect!

Most mornings the battery is 0, 1 or 2% down on the reading before I went to sleep…deep sleep is being enforced.

My C5303 drained battery like hell, with less than 5 minutes on screen time, it drained 2% per hour.
bluetooth, nfc, wifi, data disabled( sim card does not have data), mobile network wcdma or gsm only
stock .245 generic RU rom rooted with bbs installed,
top of the list wakelock : superstamina xssm (nobody in this forum can fix it)
battery drains : cell standby and phone idle
already factory reset over 5 times, nothing works
is it a rom problem? app problem? simcard problem or battery calibrating problem?
really need some advice here, had been stuck with this ****ty battery life for 2 motnhs

I think that is a problem in the OS of the SP, as put or dimly lit screen this will still consume battery as much lighting.
In my case the problem was corrected a bit, I deleted widgets, some app that did not use, the antivirus was always eating, I set to use 3G only when I need it, otherwise I'm on 2g most of the time, not game unless it is connected to the charger, WiFi and GPS only when I need them, listen to music and write a little and this we see is the result, compared to what it was prior is something a little encouragement ...(Attached)
But, why have a midrange phone if you will not be able to use to stop because two hours is dead? the Sony need to fix that big waste of battery.
I will continue to see what happens, disconcerted me the Android OS consumes much battery 45% to 52% long
Please, helpme whit this, why there are applications that I am using, or have not opened, but are consuming battery?, How do I prevent them from running without my wants? any program to control the apps that connect to the internet?

Check which processes in Android OS is running the most. Install Wakelock Detector and that should help you get there
Also, hibernate apps that are running in background. Use Greenify for the same.

Ok, i do it, the result from battery stats plus.
After it, I think do a factory reset, to see how it behaves.

In the images posted I can see Mcafee and Lookout. I would suggest removing Mcafee as I have found it to be a resource hog, my opinion though. Either way u need to get rid of one of them.
In another image I noticed wifi is always on. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> menu, advanced -> Keep wifi on only when connected to charger one. That will reduce wifi wake usage.
get Juicedefenderfrom HERE OR
Snapdragon BatteryGuru from Here
If using Juice defender, set to balanced/aggressive.
If using Viber, go into viber -> more options -> settings -> wifi sleep policy -> change to use device settings not always on.
Zero the battery and do a full charge. Post updated screens when battery is under 30% ( Please include the MISC Usage screen from BBS). I expect it will be 2 days before we see those screens.
If you can even post a screen of the Misc usage from BBS just now and we`ll compare it with the next one soon.
I use JD (gives me a 1.5x boost to battery) with Stamina Mode on (no low battery or wifi). I charge my phone on an average once in 2 days, medium.
I don't have any of those problems, the battery lasts very long, don't have any flat-surface problems, wifi catches at full signal on both my houses, never had "screen flashes", only some crashes in the youtube app.
Must be a PEBCAK error

4.4.3 evaluation

It would be nice and really useful if someone who is long enough on totally stock T-mobile 4.4.3 could evaluate his user experience with the upgrade. There are so many unconfirmed rumors on issues and malfunctions of 4.4.3 that objective opinion is needed before taking an OTA.
I am unlocked and rooted on T-Mo, but I have not had any issues or malfunctions on 4.4.3. It seems fast and stable and I've had good battery life. What issues have you heard about? I would be happy to test any that are reported.

I am experiencing all those things on 4.4.2

Glad to hear that. Issues that are mostly reported for 4.4.3 are battery drain, difficult regarding wifi and gps connection, lag in dialer app, sms issues and sometimes ocassionaly crash. But hopefully Motorola is not affected.
I'm running the XT1053 stock unrooted and running 4.4.3. The only issue I've noticed of those that you mentioned is the battery drain.

I'm using it since the OTA has been published and I must say that battery life is awesome, way better than on 4.4.2. I had some issues, after couple days after I applied OTA I couldn't enable WiFi AP, got "Error" nothing more. But factory reset helped. Now the only issue I notice is that some time when I exit an application with back button for very short time I see something I had run earlier. I didn't noticed any dialer lag.

SMS problems only happen if you have messaging disabled. It's fixable though (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/hangouts-sms-crash-solved-t2773828)
Haven't encountered any of those other problems though you called out.
This topic is of great interest to me...
Actually, the main issue I have with 4.4.2 is the horrible battery life...
4.4.2 power consumption seems to be 50-75% higher than on 4.2.2, with equivalent usage...
I've also noticed the 'back' issue that displays for a second another app...
Have you activated ART ?

No. I'm on dalvik, rooted and gravitybox. I don't use any battery saving apps, GPS on device only, location reporting off, WiFi scanning off. I easily get 2 days of battery life which was almost impossible on 4.4.2.

It's your usage/config, not 4.4.2
I get amazing battery life on 4.4.2 stock ROM/Kernel.
Either 30+ hours standby with 6.5hour screen on time (sometimes 7 hours) or 28+ hours and 5 hours+ screen time with a crapload of syncs running.
my syncs:
Hotmail Push
Gmail Push
Facebook
Facebook Messenger
Whatsapp
Viber
Skype
BBM
Telegram
Tapatalk
Google Now
Contacts
Keep
Tinder
Dropbox
Obviously because of all these syncs I have a lot of wakelocks and my Android OS usage is high but I still get 5 hours screen on time and 24+ hours standby easily.
I think the low light camera performance is greatly improved and the battery life is a little better. I leave gps, wifi, and bluetooth on, google location services off, use Assist at home for hands-free call answering and text reading/responding and charge the phone about every other day. My usage is generally light to moderate.

So, here's my question: with all that, do you have any intentions of moving to 4.4.3 when it's available for your variant from Rogers? Planning to do some testing up front (with a solid backup of your current system, of course) and see if it's worth keeping for a longer period of time, or have you already decided to just skip it and stick with your 4.4.2 heavily debloated version?

I'll try it once it's available for Rogers, absolutely.
With Titanium backup it only takes me 15-20 minutes from start to finish to fully set up a ROM so it's no big deal.
Unfortunately the Moto X is not on Roger's priority list so it may take a while. They discontinued it as sales were sub-par.

Hello, thanks for your feedback...
Please, don't take this message the wrong way. English is my second language, so I'd like to clear that out, I don't want to sound aggresive at all.
But I had the MotoX running JB for about 6 months before upgrading to kitkat...
I had a very solid idea of an average consumption, which was about 20 hours of mix usage, and 2 hours of screen usage...
That would leave me with about half battery left... I'd use wifi only at home...
That was pretty consistant, I'd only charge the phone at the office, and then I would not need to plug it until the next day...
Since I upgraded to kitkat 4.4.2, I cannot get those numbers anymore... Usage is the same...
So when I say that to me kitkat is affecting my battery life, it's because I see that behaviour...
It's not something that I feel, o think... When you see about 50% battery left with only 1 hour of screen time, it's significant would not you say?...
After installing the OTA, I did a Hard Reset because I thougth something went wrong...
But nothing changed...
That's why I'm expecting this fix...
I've also noticed that maybe kk is more sensitive for the quality of the signal the phone receives...
Cheers...
And I edit the message, because I forgot to mention: phone tends to get warmer than on JB...

Battery drain, especially at idle

I love pretty much everything about this phone and can't imagine it being much better. One of the reasons I bought it was for the famed battery life. Most blogs and battery tests put it at just over the Z3 and one of the longest lasting phones out there.
However, that hasn't been my experience. I'm an Android veteran and I know how to look for battery drains and what generally causes them. I'm losing a lot of battery at idle and there doesn't seem to be any reason. Nothing shows up in the battery stats. I even tried stamina mode and the results were worse. I lost 20% over 11 hours without even touching the phone. It just sat there and lost 1/5th of the battery. Not quite 2%/hr, I know, but still significant for a phone in stamina mode and not being used.
The only thing that shows up in the battery stats are the usual suspects: Android OS and Android System. I don't have a weak LTE signal or anything.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing fairly significant battery drain, especially idle drain. My battery life isn't horrible, but it should be a whole lot better from what I was reading before I purchased the phone.
Apologies for asking obvious questions, but are things like wifi, mobile date, auto-sync, bluetooth and NFC toggled on or off? Are certain apps repeatedly appearing in the Consuming Apps list? I tend to make sure I swipe these away which has helped when I've had similar excessive battery drain, for me these are (for example) Reddit Sync and Google Docs. It is weird that they don't appear to be high in the battery usage % list though...

Wifi, mobile data, auto sync, and Bluetooth are on all the time, as they are on all of my smartphones. These are not the cause of the drain I'm experiencing. If you leave all of those off all the time, there's no point in having a smartphone. NFC is off.
As stated, there is nothing in the app drain listing to cause alarm. Nothing in the battery stats is telling me I have an issue, which is why I'm frustrated.
Fair point, though I personally toggle them on and off as needed.
How any apps do you have installed over and above those bundled? I'd try uninstalling as much as possible then reinstalling then one by one. Or a less extreme option could be to clear cache in as many apps as you can, reboot and see if the drain stops.
I have everything enabled except Google Now and I lose about 0.2% per hour when idle. Also, I believe all the folks who are reporting battery life of 2 days with 6 hours SoT must be having very low idle drain.
So greyhulk I think your experience is not the norm, but unfortunately don't know how to help. Post up some screenshots of your battery stats.

When you look a the battery History details, do you see a lot of awake time? Also look at the top 3 or 4 items in Battery usage individually, do they show high amounts of Keep awake time while the phone is idle? A wakelock or poor cell signal are the two main causes of high idle battery drain.

It's definitely not poor signal. There is a bit of wake time, but the top 3 items are screen, android OS, and Android system. The wake time on those is not significant, either.

I'm about the same. I'm getting on average 7 hours on screen daily with everything on, no stamina mode, over 70% brightness. I left my phone unplugged for the first time overnight and it drained a whopping 1%! I've had the phone for over 2 weeks now.

Sorry to hear about your battery issues, but as mentioned, that's not the norm. Not sure how much help I can be, but I can tell you your Android System and OS percentages are about 2-3 times higher than mine so that seems related to the drain, but tracking down the culprit will be tricky. Have you considered factory resetting?

Here's are a couple screenshots for comparison:
when Android OS and/or Android System drain more than cell standby and phone idle you can rest assured that an app or service is draining your battery.
Many things can be disguised as Android System (/OS). It could be google now, location services, syncing of google drive, browser sync or an app running it's own service etc.
Android system and Android OS always drain 2-5% of a battery on all of my devices. However I turn on wi-fi and other stuff only when needed. Plus I have all the google services, google voice and account sync disabled.
But I wasn't happy with the battery life on my Z3c also. Cell standby, phone idle and 1-2 ours of screen time drained the battery almost in 24 ours. Maybe it was one-time occasion (I haven't had much time to test it since the phone is new), but I starting to have a bad feeling

That seems highly abnormal, I leave wifi, mobile data, and GPS on at all times, with numerous accounts syncing, yet battery life has been superb for me and many others.
It's been a few hours since I posted that screenshot from my previous comment, but my battery has dropped a mere 2% to 35% and my on screen is now at 5h20m. That's the drainage I've been typically experiencing with daily heavy usage.

Yep, Android OS and system are about twice what they should be, so that's probably at least part of the cause....

I'm not going to factory reset a phone a few days after I took it out of the box and set it up. That's ludicrous. It's set up exactly the same as several of my previous Android devices, none of which had this kind of drain.

Some guy said he left his phone sitting there overnight and saw a 1% drop? That is insane.
As an aside, how are you showing the Android L on screen buttons?

Factory reset is the lazy answer and should only be a last resort, especially when the device had only been active for a few days.
That would be like telling someone to format their computer every time it slows down a little.

A factory reset at the very start is the best time to do it, rather than wait weeks, months from now when it would really be cumbersome, but anyway, you do whatever you think will help. I already tried offering help and you were pretty rude about it so I'm done.

You're kidding, right? Two days out of the box, I have every account set up, all of my music downloaded, all of my apps set up, and my interface tweaked to be the way I want it. It's not any easier now than it will be three months from now. There's also the fact that the device shouldn't run this way out of the box.
Whenever there's a battery thread or a person asking for help on this forum because they have a weird drain, there are two predictable responses that will be offered almost immediately:
Turn everything off - Yes, if you toggle everything off, you'll get good battery life, but then why even have a smartphone? Most modern smartphones are capable of getting decent battery life with all radios on all the time. This is not a solution.
Factory reset - I work in I.T. If I told someone to wipe their computer every time they reported an issue, I'd be out of a job. That should be an absolute last resort. I could see it on a phone that you'd been using for months that suddenly had battery issues and you couldn't figure out what the cause was, but a phone that has been set up less than a week? Please.
These kind of offered solutions aren't helpful, yet they're always the first ones offered. It has been this way since I took it out of the box on day one. So, it either it doesn't like one of the apps I installed from the get go, or it has another issue, or is defective. I mainly posted this thread to see if others were having my experience and a few have confirmed that they are.
So, I'm sorry if you're butt hurt, but I certainly wasn't trying to be rude. I was just disregarding a solution that I predicted someone would offer that is not an option at this point (and really shouldn't be). Anyway, thanks for trying, I guess. Just please be aware that if someone comes here looking for help, they're doing so because they don't WANT to wipe their phone or turn off all of its features. They're looking for an alternative solution. Even newbies know enough to wipe their phone when things aren't working right and it's the last thing they want to hear if they ask for assistance.

Actually without having the phone in hand there is little anyone can do to tell you what is draining the battery, the suggestions given are typical of tech support help if standard things don't work. So you can either take those suggestions or do more research since you have the phone in hand and find the problem. Based on the information given there really is no magic answer to help you.

Am I the only one with poor battery life?

So seeing that development is dead on this phone, I'm stuck with the latest stock ROM as the other custom ROMs cameras won't work or have issues.
Are others having bad battery life on v7.4.2 or is it just me? I've tried location service disable apps/scripts and battery saving apps but it doesn't seem to help.
I would like to roll back to the older versions of the stock ROM but then it has security issues (thanks BLU /s). Is sitting on the latest stock ROM the only option out there that functions well (apart from battery life)?

well you dont have to stay on 7.4.2, you can go to v17 and compare battery levels.
Is your phone rooted and running Xposed Framework? I've tried both 7.4.2 and v17. In both cases, battery life was fine, until I installed Xposed. After that, I also started seeing close to 50% battery drops overnight.

I just installed v17, its a little better than before. Yeah I've tried 7.4.2 with and without xposed and I still had the same amount of drain.
I have the same issue
I'm having the same issue with my R1 HD, I think the battery usage is normal during the day but the problem is it drains overnight, I disable the wifi and data and turn off sound notifications when I go to bed. When I wake up I find the battery drained 15 - 20% over those hours.
I had the blu life pure mini before this phone and barely drained 1% overnight with those same settings, I also have the smart energy saving on but I don't think is doing anything.
I just got this phone 3 days ago and I really like it (it's much better than the life pure mini) except for the battery life issue. The phone came with v7.4.2 out of the box and yesterday I just got an official update to v8.4 but I haven't installed it yet 'cause I read somewhere that some people started having issues with this phone after receiving an update, although I don't think is this one because this is from may 5th 2017 and I think that thread was from last year.
Have you found a way to solve this and have you tried this update already? Is it safe? I don't know what to do because the phone is under warranty for 10 days (I bought it from a reseller) so if I can't find a way to fix this I could maybe consider return it and get my money back, although I prefer not to because where I live its pretty hard to get your hands on a phone like this at a decent price.
I wanted to upload an image of the battery stats but I just recharged it so maybe later, here is one of the update available.

Thanks for replying
I'm not an advanced user so I'm not looking to root my phone unless it fixes the battery issue. Unless this behavior is normal with this phone, draining battery while idle, because even with this the battery still last through the day. Its just that it didn't happen with my previous phone so I think there is a problem.
I wanted to know if there is a chance installing the official update will fix this and if anybody has had issues with the v8.4 because otherwise my phone is working fine.
I'm very new to this so any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I think I'm onto something with the issue, last night I tried again before I went to bed, turned of wifi, data, silenced notifications and turned on battery saver. Woke up 8 hours later to see the battery had drained 16%.
So I went over every detail of the battery stats and found that my phone is always awake, day and night. Something is preventing the phone from going into sleep mode and I don't know what it is. Only apps I've installed are twitter, instagram, whatsapp, UC browser, TY kids, duolingo, panda mobile security and an online shopping app. All the amazon apps are disabled and I turned off the automatic updates from the playstore.
Googling about this I found some people who had the same issue had fixed it by cleaning the cache an rebooting, I did this (with all apps cache) but it didn't work.
I'm going to install a battery monitor app to see if I can find something else, this thing is driving me crazy. Here are some screen captures of this morning.
