I've been out of the loop for a long time. The last music player I used has seemingly been abandoned (Mort Player), so I'm curious about what everyone uses (and why).
I'd love something with decent widget support (something with cover artwork). All (or at least the vast majority) of my albums have a folder.jpg.
flac fupport would be HUGE, but I don't know of many that support it (Neutron does, I think). EQ would be helpful. m4b (audiobook) support would be awesome, but that will probably need to be a separate player, plus I have an old iPhone that I use in my car for audiobooks.
I guess this is a combination post. Looking for what people use, as well as recommendations for me.

That's one I'm considering. That or Neutron are leading the pack in my mind.
google search "android music app" and there are a ton of threads, but IMO neutron player has by far the best sound quality. I tried a lot of apps and even though it doesn't have the best interface you can without a doubt hear the difference in sound when using Neutron over any other player. Sure, I guess poweramp or any other player could use eq settings to sound better but neutron doesn't need anything.
Poweramp will be the bone pretty much everyone goes with.

Not to break with the pack but I'm using Gone mad music player. It's paid but has a great eq and processor. It supports crossfading and gap less playback.
For me it's been fantastic.

Long time poweramp. Since a few month Shuttle
for me it's Poweramp. since i have a Macbook and use iTunes as my primary player, i have to use Apple Lossless (alac) instead of flac. Poweramp seems to be one of the only players to support this format. if you're using regular flac files, Shuttle (better visuals) or GoneMAD (more customization) should do the trick since they use the same audio engine that supports lossless.

I looked up this one since you mentioned it and found out that I have already purchased the full version...
I'll install the trial on my Nexus and see how it sounds through my DT770s. I'd desperately love for one of these players to sound good enough with them that I don't have to bring my headphone amp with me when I travel. So far, Poweramp is sounding the best through those headphones to me. Not as full as with the amp, but better than my stock iPhone for sure.
The fact that it supports m4b is icing on the cake.

Have you tried viper4android yet? It requires root but is a great amp and even has custom headphone profiles that are adjusted for a wide selection of headphones for different manufacturers. I have Sennheiser Momentums and it makes the music sound amazing.

Looked at it, but since I'm rooted stock I wasn't sure if it would work.
I have to say that of the 4 that I've tried (Play Music, Neutron, Poweramp, and Gone Mad (the latter 3 all trials)), GMMP has so far yeilded the closest sound to my desktop rig using the same headphones, albeit not as loud or with quite the note separation.
I would have sworn that Neutron would do that.
The headphones I have really do need an amp to help bring out the full potential, but I'm pretty impressed with how everything sounds out of the N6. Better than out of my old iPhone without an amp.

Stock rooted w/custom recovery? If so it's really just a matter of flashing a zip and opening the app, installing a driver, and reboot. (edit) You also have to flash a permissive zip for SElinux.
There are configurations for headset, phone speaker, Bluetooth, and aux output.
On the gmmp , I've really enjoyed it tbh. I pay for apps rarely but I've been happy with this purchase. My only issue is it not sending album art to my car stereo very well but otherwise worth it.

Good to know. I didn't know if it would work with the stock kernel (yes I have TWRP installed).
I will have to give it a try. I plugged my E6 into my phone and headphones and was very impressed. I gave up on the E6 shortly after getting a proper headphone amp/dac, but the sound was the closest yet to my desktop rig which is a huge plus to me.

I like Rocket Player. The free version has a 5-band equalizer and the premium version a 10-band one, so you can get a lot of the functionality of Viper4Android there.

But if you conect via jack amd play loseless flac music, same config and add DD Atmos ,sound amazing. Maybe no so good ñike other HiFi top earphones ,but very very good, and 12g ,waterproof and 30 pounds, are nice, and you can connect other earphones to BT module,as well
Xiaomi Piston for sport and Sennheiser momentum Over Ear for pleasure
I think the starting question is wrong. It´s not the device that determinates the phones.
It is the wallet, first, then type of music you ear and personal preference in the way each one ears music.
Some bass heads like beats products, but what they listen is not the music as it was recorded: it's artificial enhancements, and that's fine. Some like more details in metallic instruments and others in voice and other that just want to listen to the music as they were at the studio at time of recording.
So it's up to you. You can check here.

Seem great. Too bad BT doesn´t handle uncompressed music well. I mostly ear FLAC without any EQ.
couldn’t believe that you will be able to hear a difference between both ways on a Honor 7 because this is the wrong hardware for it!
But it should be good enough for a older man to hear good music during jogging etc.
Did you see, that the headset use Bluetooth 4.0 with apt-X® ?
Anyway, my suggested combination was the best quality i ever heard on my phone!
But this is also a results of using this great NEUTRON music player app too!!!
How is the speaker audio-quality compared to something like HTC One devices?
Is the DAC & AMP somewhere near the quality of the HTC 10, LG V20 or Axon 7?
Regards Forsaked
I can only compare to the iPhone 6S.
The speaker of the P10 is a bit louder, but on the loudest setting it sounds a bit distorted or overdriven. When I set 2 steps down it sounds like the iPhone 6S in direct comparison. The loudest setting is good for ringtones and they sound really well, if you don't have songs like metal or trance as ringtone.
With headphones (Beyerdynamics DT-770) and some FLAC files I couldn't hear any differences.
Pocketnow made an audio review for the P10.
https://youtu.be/jBzEmOhfcSU
The loudness of headphone output is 1/3 of iphone 7, 40% quieter than Galaxy S7. Not very loud. Both Phonearena and GSMarena confirm this.
I can confirm that the sound in P10 is very nice in Bowers and Wilkins P5 jack.
If you run flacs and Hi-Res Audio its very nice. Blutooth in AAC is also nice.
The Sound in P10 is designed by Hardan Kardon and the DAC is made of Yamaha Commercial Audio
It is well enough loud, if you use the Huawei music app you must run DTS.
Its pros is rock, blues, vokal, acoustic, jazz, funk etc... The sound is egaging, dynamic, detailed and lively better than iphone 4S, and other mobiles ive tried. The phones strongest audio card is something called SEPARATION, between instruments, that is simply outstanding. You hear details of what drum it is, clear vokal, and all the instruments is well placed in a room.
Classical sounds nice, but is not its strongest card, it could have more clarity and focused details..
If your are a Beats head, that damage your ears with hiphop, Skrillex and tekno at high volume, maybe your not satisfyed.
I cranked House of Pain Jump around in Poweramp, and that sounded nice.
HTC 10 should on the papers have better audio sound tho.
But I want to know if the Huawei P10 is ready with drivers to connect a Dac via USB for example Dragonfly.
I ask this because alot of other people wants to know the same.
Works with ESS chipset in the B&O modular for the LG G5.
I prefer to disable DTS. Nice sound but the volume is a little lover than Htc
I just want to give my opinion on this:
I have both the Axon 7 and the P10 Plus and I must say that output is better in the P10 Plus, and I don't understand why.
I don't know what kind of sorcery does DTS mode, but it pumps the sound in a really nice way.
When you disable DTS, Axon 7 sounds better in HiFi res.
Probably is because there is no way to use the AKM DAC on the Axon 7 with a proper equalization, so even when the sound is good, it can't be used along the Dolby Atmos feature. Dolby Atmos only kicks in when using the speakers, or if you want to use it with headphones, it will automatically change to Snapdragon DAC. So far there is no way to use Atmos and the AKM dac together.
I'm using Sony XBA-H1 which I find pretty decent earbuds to test this.
:good:
Its Confirmed by Huawei that P10 use the latest Hi6403 soundchip (typical with Kirin960) that supports Hi-Rez
Its rumoured that Harman Kardon, and Yamaha Commercial Audio group has worked on the sound in P10
It's just to bad that the amplifier is to weak. It makes the volume lower than the competitors.

Problem is that we don't have a way to equalize the output using the high quality dog, because as long as we turn on Dolby Atmos, it changes to Qualcomm one.
Is a pity we don't have a stock or default equalizer besides Dolby Atmos, because is useless if we want the best quality out of the headphone jack.

I use Spotify all the time also but to experience to true potential of your headphones, you must try Poweramp once ( you might get hooked as well) just for the sake of its unmatched Eq presets.
As for the arise, you can look up for the guides to install Viper4Android on XDA ( will take a simple search). You'll be needing root access (Magisk has some v4a modules as well) though.
Caution: stepping into the world of v4a is big step. No coming back from there.?

If you can experiment enough with Poweramp's (alpha build) Eq presets ( I prefer "speaker ( loud) with bass and treble variable according to the song I'm listening to), you can pretty much get satisfied with any earphones above $10 price tag. The cheapest iem I can find in my drawer from a whole bunch of earbuds is the KZ-ate which can easily outperform this Overpriced AKG earbuds.
Coming to the V4A, it takes some time to get it working on your smartphone if you're dealing with it for the first time but if you can get it running, you can expect a SQ bump of at least 5x of Poweramp's eq.
Judging by the quality of one of my own xiaomi's basic earbuds, I hope the pro HD ones won't be really bad.
Is it safe to assume USB C headphones will work on the OP5T regardless of OS/ROM? I don't want to purchase a pair only to find out they won't work with OmniROM.

Truer words have never been spoken. Once I experienced the awesomeness that is V4A I'll never again purchase a phone that cannot be rooted. I only wish I would have found out about it sooner:laugh:
If you are running magisk it takes no time at all to get it processing for YouTube, Pandora, etc., just install the module and reboot. If you are use Poweramp be sure to go-to settings>audio>advanced tweaks and uncheck direct volume control to get viper processing.
Howdy All,
For those who have had a LG V device in the past you'all know what's coming - how do we trick the quad DAC into high impedance mode (HIM) or AUX mode?
For those who don't know here's a little background. The previous LG V series phones have had a very nice DAC and AMP setup which can almost meet the standards of audiophile quality. The thing was that in the later phones (V20 and V30 AFAIR) the software was designed to "smart switch" which mode the AMP was in. HIM and AUX mode settings had the loudest volumes and was corresponding to the headphone impedance value. The normal setting had the lowest volume designed for low impedance IEMs. Note that the AMP setting doesn't really have a bearing on sound QUALITY, just sound VOLUME. I'm guessing but the reasoning for this is to prevent blown IEMs and blown eardrums. I'm going to find the link for the old V30 quad DAC thread and some stuff tried and what worked in order to activate AUX mode and/or HIM. BTW having ROOT on the phone allows for adjusting this setting as needed, which is why I went with the unlocked version this time around. My pair of MrSpeakers Aeon Flows have low impedance but need power in order to drive properly and the AMP in the V series phones would only trigger normal impedance mode.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/modes-quad-dac-t3690567
So that brings us to the V40. Does it have a quad DAC? Yes it does. Does it have a smart switching AMP? So far my indications are yes it does. Do the old tricks from the V30 days work on the V40? I don't think that they do. I have multiple extension cables, which I use for triggering the AUX mode as well as an impedance adapter (50ohms I think). The old methods of using the extension cable, the adapter, and both don't seem to have an effect on the AMP setting. My Sony MDR-1As are much louder than my Aeon Flows...bummer for me.
UPDATE - Upon further testing with the help of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apptrio.hi_fi_status I was able to trigger the AUX AMP mode and it kicked up the volume on my Sony's quite a bit! Unfortunately when I triggered HIM the volume of the sound did not change from the normal mode. Basically what I did was take a 2ft 3.5mm cable extension (male on one side female on the other) and plug it in WITHOUT THE HEADPHONE CABLE ATTACHED. Once the HIFI status app displayed AUX mode I then plugged in my HPs and BOOM, here comes the volume!
Anyways if you have anything to add or have any questions feel free to hit us up. When root is available I'll also make updates to this thread if need be.
Have a good one :highfive:

If you have your volume go up to 75 and it doesn't blow out your ears then it is due to the AMP being in normal mode.

Have you tried the mobile version of foobar2000? As it's the preferred app for FLAC files and such on the PC, I imagine the mobile version is quite good as well. I wonder how it compares to Neutron Player. I definitely will give both a shot and compare.
On the note of music players, despite making fun of it (it's quite easy to do) and being certain it would fail, I recently converted to Tidal. The quality is really astounding, and the music library is almost as complete as Spotify/etc. Additionally, some albums are available as "masters" that are actually encoded with MQA!
Your right about Tidal. It sounds awesome. The price difference isn't worth it though.
Treesap! I'm comparing those players right now! I'm listening to metal (Tesseract), jazz (Yellowjackets), all flac, and so far I like both foobar2000 and Neutron. The built in player is not satisfying me yet, except for mp3 (I See Stars - Treehouse). Does anyone know if it's necessary to disable the built in effects to make other players work independently? That's what I did with v20. Just remember how different expectations and taste we all have in regards to music/sound
And maybe I should add that I'm just a regular user (with high demand on sound quality), who can't afford too fancy earbuds or extras right now. Any advice regarding good quality sound (budget price) earbuds would be very appreciated

Well I'm sure there's some tech guys here who can give us the correct details, but for me the answer is yes! After tuning it up for my ears, the Poweramp does it in a perfect way. If I play mp3 or flac it's giving me perfect sound all over, compared to the lg app were I had to tune it up for individual files.
have any of you engaged the DAC for streaming, for Google music in particular?
there was mention by some last year that one DAC player and an add-on app could do that for Google music. i just don't keep much on my phone and streaming is my way, so I'm still looking at taking advantage where i can. I'm running V4A on a rooted V30 now and looking at the V40's development.

Went back to Poweramp (poweramp-alpha-build-705) and so far it's the best one for me.
For anyone who didn't know, if you payed for the full version, you can upgrade it to high res.

Poweramp improving and improving
(Poweramp-v3-build-805-uni)
I realize there probably isn't much benefit from forcing high impedance but I do want to do some testing with it among other things so I'm curious has anyone figured out any tricks to forcing it with an extension cable or anything of the sorts. I'm still trying to find ways and it looks like similar ways done to the v30 isn't working the same way for our v40's

So after fiddling for a while, Poweramp alpha 705 is tuned (for my ears) to perfection
If it can help anyone, I'll happily share?!
BTW, some interesting reading that made me understand more about hi-res and DAC:

What settings have you set your Poweramp to? The LG app is sounding better and much louder to me.

Hope the following can help, and also, please correct me anyone, if my way of thinking here is some way wrong or misleading.
A assume you've already taken part of the Poweramp forum?! It's the only way to get the hi-res add-ons. And you obviously have to log in to be able to download.
I'm not 100% sure about how poweramp and the built in eq interacts, but after fiddling for a bit, it seams like what I'm sharing here works best when it comes to volume and sound. Have in mind our individual reference of sound and of course, what kind of earphones/buds you have (this is based on flac files).
You can see I've put replay gain on max in Poweramp settings. You can easily change RG in the eq later to fit individual album.
If anyone else have suggestions, please don't be shy

Speaking of the DAC, does anyone know if the V40 has support for MQA? The V30 has it, and they recently added support for it to the Essential PH-1, but no mention of it for the V40, just "high quality Quad DAC". I suspect that it does, because they probably used the same chip for the V40, but I see no mention of it anywhere, so far.
