Fingerprint Sensor Not Working (Help) - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

So my phone's fingerprint sensor just suddenly died on me Sunday night. Now I can only use face/iris scan so basically my note 9 just becomes an iPhone.
There's a message on the lock screen that says "Fingerprint Sensor is not responding. Please try again later". In the settings where you add or remove fingerprints there's a pop up saying an error has occurred. The swipe to drop notification function is also not working.
Note that this one day after I got the pie update in Malaysia. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. So far I tried booting into safe mode, wiping cache partition and factory reset, none of those fixed the problem. The *#0*# diagnostic result is not really helpful.
If anyone has ways to fix it so I don't have to go to service center cuz I don't have any other spare phone's to use.

I think you tried everything that can be done so you might need to let service centre look at it. Sounds like a hardware issue.

[Q] Screen orientation not changing?

Hi,
I got a Captivate in the mail yesterday. It seemed to be working fine.
I installed LauncherPro and screen rotation was working fine.
Unfortunately it's not rotating the screen. I went to the settings to verify that screen rotation was enabled, and it was.
I can't get rotation anywhere. LaunchedPro Home screen, text messages app, email app, gmail, browser. None of them work.
Is this a known issue? Could a factory reset resolve this? Maybe flashing another ROM? Also, is there any app that can test the accelerometer?
regards,
del
Have you removed LauncherPro to see if that is the issue? I would do that prior to doing a reset of your phone.
Yeah. I also flashed a stock Samsung ROM from this thread:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
No go. I also tried a Bubble Level app from the Market. It is not moving (not getting anything form the accelerometer).
Guess I'm gonna have to contact Samsung, because I got it from ebay.
Yep looks like the accelerometer is dead
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
Oh lucky me.
Called Samsung, had to explain the problem around 4 times to the rep. After a number of restarts, enabling/disabling screen orientation on the menu, and even a user data clear, she agreed that there was a problem.
So, she starts making arrangements for me to send in the phone and, all of a sudden, says: "I'm really sorry, we can't honor the warranty because you bought it off of ebay."
Sounds like I bought a Lemon.... tried contacting the seller via email to see if the phone is still in the 30 day AT&T warranty and she seems to be ignoring me. (Maybe she knew beforehand and that's why she sold it?).
I think I'm going to open a case in Paypal.
i don't know if this was resolved but you can access a test mode by going into *#0*# into the phone then there is a sensor selection select that and then there is an image test that test rotation i messed with that and got it working. but im now on a custom rom and it doesnt work anymore.

new update, how do i get rid of swipe screen before security?

how do i get rid of the swipe scree with the new update
its a wasted feature as i prefer the lock screen to be the main screen with my pin settings
instead of a pointless screen to swipe. to access the above
thanks
Update came through today...
...and I'm getting exactly this. Its crazy. I think it has something to do with the device owner, as my tablet is being weird about the owner account. I've logged a call with customer support and I'll update here when I know more. I suspect a wipe and reset will fix it... but why should I, damnit. I've already had to send this POC back to the shop three times (two screen replacements and some 'driver fix', or so they claimed...)
As suspected...
Asus tech support have asked me to wipe the device. Will report back later with results...
Same issue here and still remains after factory reset. Absolutely bizarre...
Yep...nope!
I can confirm a factory wipe has no effect on this issue.
Stuck in ASUS support hell
Now wiped the device (twice!) and no difference. They want me to RMA the unit. For now, I'm refusing. Interestingly, I've found someone having the same issue with a MeMo Pad 8. Is this ASUS security policy...?

fingerprint sensor does nothing

Hello,
I recently purchased a Note 8 (N950F/DS) off eBay, and after testing some basic things (screen, gyro, camera, ...) I downloaded the latest sammobile ROM (PDA N950FXXU5CRHA and CSC N950FOXM5CRHA) for my country (Spain, PHE version) and flashed (AP, BL, CP, CSC) it through Odin (3.13.1). To be honest, I may have flashed HOME_CSC in the USERDATA button from Odin following a friend's instructions, though I didn't see any effect from it, and I reflashed correctly later.
After boot, everything is working fine (Samsung Health, Samsung Pay, Knox is OK, Iris scanner, ....) except for fingerprint sensor. Every time I try to add a fingerprint, the phone does nothing. It simply asks me to put my finger, but never detects it. There are no errors or anything.
In the sensor test menu (*#0*#) fingerprint sensor passes all tests (when the finger is off). When the finger is on 1 or 3 tests fail, but they also fail on my S8 which is working.
So, apparently, my Note 8 does detect the fingerprint sensor, is capable of distinguishing whether the finger is on or off it according to tests, but does absolutely nothing when trying to add a fingerprint through the settings menu.
After searching for the last day, I'm absolutely out of ideas. I have tried deleting cache from recovery menu, and factory reset from both the recovery menu and the settings menu. Everything works always but for the fingerprint sensor.
Any suggestions on what to do to get it back to work?
Did it work before you flashed the new firmware from Sammobile?
I had a problem a few weeks ago where I got the error message saying something went wrong with my sensor I need to reboot the phone, which never seemed to help.
After searching around, I eventually got a couple of posts and videos saying to clear the data from the apps menu for "fingerprint" or something like that, and then reboot again. That did the trick for me and I haven't had an issue again yet.
Though, your issue sounds different than that, so I'm not sure if that will help, seeing as even factory resetting does nothing.
Sorry I didn't help much, but wanted to add my experience, anyway.

Thanks for your suggestions. I unfortunately did not test the fingerprint sensor before installing the Spanish ROM. I tested many other things like camera, flash, screen, gyroscope, ... but fingerprint was one of the few I did not test.
I tried deleting the data from the fingerprint app and rebooting, but I got more of the same: nothing, not even an error.
I'm trying to find out what the original ROM was to reflash it and see if it comes back to live. I downloaded an app called "phone info", and I'm trying to see if I can find the country of origin through product code, model number, ...

Nokia 9 crashes after screen unlock

Hi,
couple of days ago when I tried to unlock my screen, my phone immediately turned to black. I was not able to perform a fingerprint scan or use my pattern to unlock my screen.
It kept on flickering.. from unlock screen to black. After some time the phone restarted and came into recovery with the message: "Not able to start android.. Retry or factory reset."
After 3 times I did a factory reset..
So far so good for now..
Anyone experienced the same? I know someone in the Netherlands (I am from the Netherlands) had the same issue!!
I happen to be Dutch too. I don't normally use security for my phone, but I used that fingerprint scanner for two days to see if I would get the same problem. Unfortunately I have not encountered a problem. I hope you don't get this problem anymore either. Success with it

Issues with Fingerprint Sensor

Hi guys, I've got a Verizon N960U I've been using, and the fingerprint sensor hasn't been working for the last month or so. When I attempted to use it, it would show the message "An error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor. If this message appears repeatedly, restart your device". Initially I saw suggestions of clearing the fingerprint cache, but the fingerprint app wasn't showing up in the app list after selecting the option to show system apps. initially I thought i was just tired and had missed it, so I ordered a new sensor and installed it. No change. Tried to open the *#0*# menu to do some diagnostics, but that didn't open either, although later I found out that was due to Verizon disabling it on their FW. Today I decided wifi calling wasn't that important to me, and flashed the N960U1 XAA firmware to the phone (after a factory reset) in hopes of either returning the fingerprint app to the list, getting the *#0*# menu back, or both. I have gotten neither.
Most of the threads I've seen regarding the fingerprint issues usually end with "take it to Samsung and let them fix it", but that isn't an option for me, as I got the phone secondhand, with no warranty and a cracked screen, which I had to replace. I really don't wanna put that much more money into the phone, but I'm running out of ideas. Anybody know of something I haven't tried yet?
I have a question, was the fingerprint sensor working after you had your screen repaired?

Yup, working pretty well too, fairly responsive. If I had to guess, I think it was a recent update that killed it. I'd also been having issues with the camera, but a cache clear would fix that, for a while at least. Clearing the cache helped the fingerprint reader once, but the fix didn't help for long.
Try manually reinstalling the OS back onto you device using Odin. Could be that some of the files had gotten corrupted during the installation process of the update.

I've just tried that again, no dice. Mebbe I need a sanity check. My order of operations has been factory reset from settings page, boot to recovery, reset once more just for fun, reboot to bootloader, and then flash via odin the latest XAA image I get from Frija, which would be this: SM-N960U1_1_20191025150053_qp9lx74x57_fac.zip.enc4. Wait for it to start up and check. Am I missing a step here?
I would take your device to a Samsung Service Centre or the repair shop, where you got your device fixed and let them take a look at it. Could be that the fingerprint scanner is damaged.
Possible Solution?
So I think I fixed it. Doing a standard Odin flash didn't work, but I did a flash with the re-partition option using the pit file extracted from the latest firmware, and it seems to be working now. I'll update if anything changes.
Update, the fingerprint sensor stopped working again. It was nice while it lasted. Anyone else got an idea of why the cache/filesystem could be getting corrupt over time?

Seems like the storage on your device is starting to fail and needs to be replaced. I would take your device to a Samsung Service Centre and get it inspected by a technician. If that is the case and you aren't insured or your device's warranty has expired. Then I would recommend that you get a new device. As it is cheaper than getting the storage on your device replaced.
