Why is the focus so much on the Plus? - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Correct me if I am wrong, but there should be only four differences between the two devices:
1. Dual front camers vs single
2. Bigger screen
3. Bigger battery
4. Ceramic back vs glass
All other aspects should be the same, right? I wonder why most reviewers, tech sites and even Samsung themselves focus so much on the S10 Plus. I personally chose the S10 because I cannot stand this ugly dual front camera design. The single cutout is already rather meh, but still kinda stylish, but how can anyone like the dual cutout? What do you guys think?

THE S10+ replaces the S9+ as the top end (until the 5G ships), and, as such, wil lb be the most examined as far as hands-on time goes in carrier and big-box retailers. Also, the dual-cutout has a USE - wide-screen pictures; it is not there to just be there. (If I had a need to take more wide-screen photos, the S10 or S10+ would replace the S9 for that reason alone, as this is something the S9+ is incapable of doing at all. (In fact, the S10E can't do it, either.))

Yes, the over all camera system is already being considered the best

The extra camera on the S10+ model is not a wide camera, it's a depth camera. It's suppose to be for better portraits. You are thinking it's a camera like the pixel 3 where it actually has a good purpose. I am on the fence about going with the S10+ for this reason, the dual camera on the front looks lame and I don't believe it serves a good purpose, for me.
The only reason I'd go for the S10+ is for the larger battery, but I think I will end up with the S10, I hope the battery is somewhat better than the Pixel 3xl.

You are like most of us casual users - we do not take photos in wide screen. (I posted that I normally do not, either.) In normal orientation, it acts as a depth lens; in sideways orientation, it works as a widescreen lens - including on the S10+. ) I am looking at the S10E, which does not have the extra lens; the S10 does still.

The only wide camera is on the back, not on the front.
Can you find any article saying it's a wide camera on the front? I saw one of the YouTubers think it was and even said "it doesn't really get wide" and that's because it's purpose is not to capture wide pics.
I am absolutely excited for the wide camera on the back, I love taking mobile pictures. This wide angle camera is on all variants of the phone.
When it comes to pictures using the front facing camera, I love the wide angle lens on my pixel 3 xl, so I will miss it if I move to the S10. I don't care much for portraits pictures.

I ordered the S10 because it had everything I really needed. I haven't run short of storage in the S9 so 128gb should be more than enough. Size wise, I didn't want to go any larger and it compares closely to the S9, and I don't take selfies at all so the front camera really doesn't matter. To tell you the truth, I only considered the S10e because of it's flat screen which I probably like more than a curved screen.

Standard 10+ in UK isn't ceramic, its glass. Only the 512 and 1 TB are ceramic

Its not wide angle - the normal S10 also has the group selfie feature. The second lense is really only for those ****ty bokeh effects.
And for such a trivial thing they ruin the esthetics of the fun sooo hard.

This is just Samsung showcasing what can be done (laser cutting an Amoled) and its new (like the notch some will absolutely hate it, others will like me put up with it) I have 2 phones which I honestly believe are better solutions as I never use front facing cameras (the mi mix 3 & Vivo Nex s) but again this is a showcase.
The Note 9 might just might have no punch holes, but I believe that will come in 2020.
I have ordered the S10+ as I can deal with it and its temporary as I'll be getting either the Note 10 or the S11.....
But all points are valid as its personal preference and what you believe is athletically pleasing, tbh I'd rather Samsung adopted a pop up, but they had to do this and I get why

Yes it's just a filling gap lol before we get to that point, it's not the best option, but I do think it's just slightly better than a notch, although yes I don't particularly like the punch hole either.

Okay, you are wrong. Consider yourself corrected. Lol. Just joking, but you did for get the much better cooling system on the plus. In fact several reviewers have already said that they were able to play games, and really push the processor while the phone stayed very cool. No heat detected at all. That is a vital part of my deciding on the plus. That and the ceramic back.

I personally think that -> it is because of the battery. 4100mAh
Well, at least that was my reason for ordering the s10+

I have been referring TO the rear camera - not the front (selfie) camera - which I seldom use since I learned how to switch cameras in the app. (The rear camera in even the S7 has better picture quality than the front one; why the assumption that I was referring to the front camera, since I never said I was?

The Plus is the best fastest one.
It's why no one talked about the XR until Apple had to push it because the XS wasn't selling well.
I am getting an S10e and I came from a Note8.

The S10e is going to sell well, it unlike the iPhone XR keeps the great Amoled, it's really a compelling device, that in hand comfort.

I would like a general review to see how the battery life of the regular S10 holds up vs. previous devices. I'm coming from a S8 Active so I know I'm losing a little.
I looked at the S10 vs. S10+ at Best Buy and the extra height of the + makes it less of a one handed device.

Only thing I dont like is that the USB C port cutout is too sharp. When I hold it with my finger, it seem to cut it at times
No regrets at all. Just AOSP rom would be a lot better, which should arrive soon.
The device has a piss-poor camera. Guess that's the only thing I regret. Its so bad that some phones almost 2years old takes better photos.
This is because of the very small Omnivision sensors used on this device.
But I knew about this even before I bought the device and since I don't take a lot of photos on my phone, it doesn't bother me much.
The fact that the device is very fragile and doesn't have any premium cases available also bugs me a bit. I really wish there were some decent looking protective cases for this phone.

I've seen the Pelosi case online. The product images looked like the case didn't offer much in terms of protection, especially around the screen. Also the material seemed to be very light, possibly to keep the case slim. The case looks good and I was tempted to buy. I didn't because of these reasons.
But if you have the case and its good, please post photos in my thread. Link
I created that thread as there are very few good cases available for this device and if everyone could post photos of what case and screen protector they had on the device, it would help other buyers too.

I did, until I got the unlock approval. I immediately flashed the xiaomi.eu rom and (most) of my gripes were dealt with; being android auto not working and horrible background battery drain. I still hate the home screen icon backgrounds, the fact it wont rotate, and the stock dpi... but other than that I am happy, for now.
My only complaint is that the screen is too small for my liking. I've had several larger phones in the past and I really miss the extra screen real estate. It almost seems like the screen is too skinny and long. So webpages are still small but long.

Try 320dpi. I'm lovin it! 320 was the stock dpi on the Xperia Z Ultra I had a few years back. And it works great on the Mix too. I feel 320 should have been the default DPI on the Mix.

I thought a dpi that low would break things on this device? Like the icons get screwed up or something?

No issues mate! I'm on the EU ROM and I don't see any issues at 320. This should have been the stock DPI. I can confirm that everything works fine. No issues with icon or any UI elements. Stock apps and all the other usual apps work great as well. All good! You'll be able to see more info on the screen and I bet you'll love 320!
I was waiting for something like the Z Ultra to show up. And finally it did! If you had the Z Ultra, you may remember that camera wasn't Sony's priority. It was all about the experience. And Xiaomi has made that experience even better! The mix is just perfect!

I just tried 320DPI, oh man, I love it!!! It even fixed my News360 app that I love but would only show me 2 articles per screen on this phone and now shows 6!
The only downside is that top status bar with the clock and battery and such is pretty small. But that's certainly a good compromise as the reset of the phone looks normal now, all I did was bump the UI font size up from small to medium and it all looks great.
All of the icons appear to be working fine, but I use Nova Launcher, so maybe that why.
320 DPI is pretty much a standard DPI for android, and so I expect alot of apps are tuned for that DPI.
Thanks for the great suggestion! The phone looks like a normal phone now....
Received mine today. I thought I could get by without a case but no way. It's slippery! Luckily a case came with it.

There are, just use eBay or AliExpress.
About the camera you can take better pictures with another camera app or just learn to hold still and focus correctly xD I can take n decent photos.
It was easier in my s7 edge but even so I knew from the beginning this camera was inferior.
Here you have some photos taken by the default camera app and being steady.
I would say it's the same type of quality of my old LG g3 if you learn how to use it ?

Those are some good clicks mate! Like I said, camera was not a priority for me when I bought this device. I usually don't use my phone cameras a lot and only for some occasional snaps.. I knew that this device had an inferior camera compared to the competition.
Most people usually depend on their phone's camera for random clicks like when your drunk friend is doing something funny at a party or when it appears as if your dog is smiling. Random events like these, when you may not have your dedicated camera at hand. That's when your phone's camera is handy. And for casual spur of the moment clicks like these, this phone's camera is quite unreliable. In most cases those moments you intended to capture would end up as a blurry or noisy mess.
Like you said, if you put enough effort, you may be able to get a few good shots like you just shared. But that was not my point as it defeats the purpose of a phone's camera.

Jeez, nothing wrong with those at all.
I agree as well. Took a few shots and pics look fine. From all the reviews, I was expecting worse.
Best phone I've ever owned.
iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5 -> HTC One -> Samsung S5 LTE-A -> Note 7 (pretty nice) -> Xiaomi Mi Mix.
This thing is a MONSTER. Fast as hell, best battery I've ever seen (better than the Note 7), humongous display, sexy as build quality, tons of RAM, tons of fast memory, fast charging, etc. I'm surprised this exists.

What I Love and Hate about my new OnePlus 5!

My OP5 has replaced my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which unfortunately was dropped and shattered the front glass. It's expensive/difficult to replace the glass on these so I treated myself to a new phone. So this is what I Love and Hate about my new OnePlus 5!
Love
The Snapdraggon 835 -The phone is Fast and bang up to date in connectivity support.
Fast storage and lots of memory- More Speed
No bloatware and streamlined Android -Contributes to the speed and simplicity.
The silent/DnD slider button -No more taking my phone out and turning the display on to switch it to silent! Fantastic.
Fast responsive finger print unlocking.
Solid Home button -Sooner or later the push down home buttons on galaxies start to wear causing rocking, noises/rattles, missed clicks etc because of their frequent use. Hopefully nothing to wear out here.
The deep blacks and saturation from the AMOLED panel
3.5mm jack -Can still use my headphones without an adapter.
Battery -Amazing battery life and the DASH charge is great too.
USB C -So easy to plug in the charger in the dark now.
Gorilla Glass 5 -better drop resistance, the gorilla glass 4 on my Galaxy S7 drop failed
Glass on one side. Feels less premium in a way, but reduces the weight of the phone. This means less force when it falls and less chance of shattering the screen. However metal dents and scratches easily.
Hate
The Camera. So much hype and so much disappointment. Good on paper and for taking 'benchmark' photos. But very poor in real world phone usage. The S7 camera is WAY better. I'm so disappointed I gave it it's own thread.
Only 1080P screen. Also if the brightness is turned up I can see 'noise' on the display. Also get some weird distortions when scrolling. Viewing angle is good, but not excellent. Automatic brightness control is also hit and miss. The S7 was much better. A big downgrade on the S7 display in all areas.
Design is good. But it doesn't look as nice as say a galaxy S8
Having DRM issues, such as reduced quality Netlix streaming. I hope this gets sorted soon.
Sound is loud, but quality is average.
Not waterproof
No SD Card support. Who really wants two sim card holders? Make the other slot for an sdcard like Samsung.
Price. £450 is not a value bargain like the old versions. You can buy a Samsung S8 on Amazon for £550 now.
In a nutshell. It's a mid range phone in regards to features and design, but with high end performance. I don't think it's a bargain. I think the price is about right for what you get.
Sometimes I ask myself why do people actually upgrade from S7 or equal??
The S7/S7 edge is only one year old. I think it's also nonsense to upgrade from S7 to S8 for example.
What do people expect to get? A whole new smartphone experience? Ppl knew the specs right from the start, before they bought it. Of course a 1080p screen will be worse than a QHD.
It's not waterproof, you knew that. It has no SD-Slot, you knew that as well.
For the smoothness and the speed to exist, as well as the great batterylife, there need to be some things that can't be amazing as well for this price. And it's not even bad on this phone.
I understand disappointment, but it's mostly because people expect too much from a phone that is only 1 year younger than the one they own.
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and I'm totally happy with the OP5. My gf has a S7 edge. They are both good phones. The Samsung might have a better camera, but the Android experience and smoothness is GALAXIES better with the OP5.
Sometimes ist also about people's priotities.
Just my 2 cents. Hope you'll enjoy your new device

It is possible that he thought he could look past it, but ended up failing at it. idk. All I can say is that it has happened to me. Mostly with iPhone, but that is a whole other beast.

I just HAVE to ask!

It appears that to the vast majority of modern day uber mobiles that the camera is the most important factor?
I notice that some are actually going to change from the SGS8+ to the Note 8 'just' for the camera?
Cards on the table. I know next to zero regarding photography and very very seldom, if ever, use the camera on my mobile. I find the most attractive extra as sound production however...
Can some of you camera experts inform me how a pocket camera compares in quality of picture to the Note 8?
I would think, I don't know, that my Canon DSLR produces better photographs? How would my little pocket Sony camera compare?
Just how good is the quality of pictures produced by the Note 8 (also the SGS8+ that I own)? Is it just a matter of convenience or do these new mobiles produce truly 'good' photo's?
Thanks for your replies.
Ryland
The S8+ takes amazing pictures. I haven't bought a good real camera for about 6 or 7 years, but I am sure it still takes superior pictures to the best smartphone cameras. But it is bulky, easily broken (ex dropped it a week after I bought it and broke the lcd display on the back although you can still see through the cracks enough to use it) and a PITA to carry around. So I have little need personally for an actual camera. It was $850 to boot and I wish I had never bought it.
The Note 8 and it's dual rear cameras are a definite step up from the S8+. The S8+ has a GREAT camera, low light especially. But the dual shooters in the rear are very, very nice from all accounts on the Note 8. If I can actually get $425 for my Note 7 on trade in from Sammy for the Note 8 I will get the Note 8 and sell my S8+. Otherwise I will not take a 400 to 500 dollar beating to switch from my S8+ - which is a very nice phone - to the Note 8. I do miss the S Pen and a bit bigger screen is always nice. I am a tad concerned about going down in battery size - the S8+ has a 3500 mah battery and smaller display, the Note 8 has a 3300 mah battery and a bit larger display.
Anyway, IMO, the camera upgrade alone is not enough for me to switch. The trade in of $425 for my Note 7 would be enough IF I can actually get $425 from Samsung for my Note 7.
Dipends on what that "pocket camera" is, if it's an m4/3 like the Olympus OM-D or even the Canon EOS-M. i don't think Note 8 can compete with those cameras. But if it's like those small Sony "Point and Shoot" cameras, it does stand a chance of being at par if not beating the picture quality of what the Note 8 can produce.
The f1.7 lens is a huge plus because of it's lowlight capabilities and of course the bokeh effect (where the subject in front is focused and the background is somehow blurred). from what i've seen Note 8 also has an Optical Zoom which is waaaaay better than digital zoom IMO.
All in all i think it will be a great move even if you're coming from the S8+, aside from the camera, the S-Pen can offer a looooot of things that will be helpful for productivities (and picture editing too! haha)
I have Canon DSLR and it does have little better picture quality, but: I don't carry my DSLR with me unless I specifically plan to take a lot of pictures and I have my phone with me all the time. Also in good light, which is most of the time I take pictures, it's hard to tell difference. My S8 is as fast at focusing as my DSLR, S8 have higher FPS for action photos, takes better video in higher resolution (4k) than my DSLR. In other words I use S8 camera most of the time, even if I have my DSLR and use Canon only for specific type of shooting (night, portrait and zoom). Note 8 has the same cam as S8 plus x2 zoom, so better bokeh, but for portrait and telephoto DSLR it is still much better, for everything else I prefer phone, if only for it's size. In my case it's not the cam I'm upgrading from S8 to Note 8, since addition of x2 zoom won't improve capabilities over S8 that much, it's the pen and I suspect it's similar with many others.
Thank you all for your kind and informative replies. I appreciate your time.
One point. Whats a "Bokeh"?
Ryland
the camera is important but it just depends on what your gonna do with the pictures...most will just share on social or just look at them on there phone..i havent seen a bad picture since i had a nextel flip phone.
for me the s-pen is the main selling point and of course the size of the unit
I would say the camera features are not important to the "uber mobiles" as you describe but more like the last item that can truly be updated / differentiated on a device for maximum upsurge with minimum cost.
That's all vendors have left to try and create hype for the next flagship.

Front Facing Cameras - Is your Wide angle better than Normal?

Ok, so I really want to love this phone but I can't figure out why the front camera wide angle photos look sharp (almost too sharp) and the normal 8 Mp photos from the front camera have no detail whatsoever. Look at the attached picture and compare the clarity of the nose, eyes, and eyebrows. The difference is huge. When taking portraits, you don't have an option to take wide angle photos, so portraits from the 8Mp camera don't look good. Normal camera should be the same as the one in G7, but it's not nearly as good.
No effects / skin smoothing etc is applied, so I'm thinking mine is defective. Can you guys take some side by side normal and wide angle photos with the front camera to compare?
Thanks.
Allen K
Your “standard” camera looks unfocused, which is why it is blurrier.
That said, after some testing I do think the “wide” selfie camera looks better in general. The main thing that bothers me is the two cameras have differing color profiles. I prefer the default color profile of the wide, so that looks better to be.
The same problem applies to the rear camera as well.

It doesn't seem to focus. When I tap on the screen, all it does is change the exposure / brightness, but there is no change in focusing. It seems that both front cameras have a fixed focus because neither adjust to tapping, but wide angle has a good bit more detail.
I stopped by the store and took two pictures side by side - store unit was noticeably better, though as good as I would've liked. I'm getting another G7 for my wife and will have to compare them.

From what I can tell, and based on some reviews I've watched, front cameras have fixed focus... maybe, due to this, the main lens has a larger minimum distance that needs to be maintained for a clearer shot. It still seems a bit off.. but I've been able to get somewhat better shots out of it holding the camera a bit farther away. I'm getting a G7 for my wife, so I'll be able to do some comparisons.

I just wanna make sure that what I wrote here is correct. Some say that the front camera is sl846, not Sony imx219 sensor
I can post a screenshot, but everything is exactly the same as in the image you posted in the thread you linked. It doesn't say exactly which camera model it is.. only the specs..
I can say this - I just compared the front camera with a G7, and the G7 is a little brighter and clearer, at least in semi-low light situation. It's possible that the main camera on my V40 is defective, but not bad enough to worry about it right now.

Do you still have G7? Is it using 3 imx351 & 1 sl846?
Yes, I got the G7 yesterday. How can I tell the model number of the camera? I don't think the Device Info HW app tells me that. It only shows specs.

Found it. Attached photo is for the V40. G7 lists imx351 and sl846.
Interesting to note that the 16mp rear wide angle cameras have a different focal length between V40 and G7 - 2.18mm vs. 2.38mm. Both are f/1.9.

Thank you so much for your help. ?
Do you find any difference in picture quality from both of these phones (the identical sensors)?
Wait... Different focal length?, I hope this isn't like LG G6 variants

Not sure about the focal length differences...but they're definitely not the same.
When taking a close-up selfie, the main camera on the G7 is much clearer than the V40's. But V40's wide angle is sharper than the main camera, and despite lower resolution, is much closer in clarity to the G7 only front camera. At a distance, the difference is a bit harder to notice.
That said, I did compare my phone to another V40 in the store, and the store demo was clearer, so I think mine might just be defective. I'm just not sure if it's worth trying to replace, since I would likely have to pay restocking and I don't want a refurbished unit from LG.

front facing cameras

I think it would be better if the phone didn`t have front facing cameras. I and I bet many other people don`t use them at all. It would make the phone much better. Or they could just release 2 different versions. One with front facing cameras and 1 with no front facing cameras just like they have versions with different storage. And if they don`t want that, they could at least have only 1 front facing camera on the s10+ model. I see no point of having 2 dual front facing cameras besides that it`s even more distracting.
I don't really use front camera's much. But it is what it is...
I guess this is the kast step before we get cameras behind the pixels.
The future is hopefully again without punch-holes.

Yeah i rarely use the front camera but i think i would probably want a phone with one just in case i ever need it. I would prefer the popup motorized front camera style probably, so its hidden always unless i ever need it.
