Hi, I just bought a new note 9, and everything is fine except a few glitches and the biggest pain in the ass, the YouTube app. I've tried changing the phone resolution settings, going back to default setting and resetting the phone , but I'm unable to get more number of options in the YouTube app than 144, 360 and 720. Even 480 is not available for some reason
Please help.

Which version of the phone do you have? And is it on wifi?
That's happened to me, but changing screen res fixed it. Strange

I'm not a big YouTuber but I have noticed certain videos only let you select certain resolutions. My guess is it depends on the aspect ratio and quality and resolution of the original video. That's only my guess but on my Note 9 Snapdragon 6GB/128GB model using the stock YouTube application certain videos only allow me to select certain resolutions.
Try a video you are sure should be available at a higher res if you Havnt. Search 1080p test video on YouTube. If it won't work change phone res to max & retry then. Last of all check in developer menu and set "minimum width" to 411 and keep phone display at max then try. If not I'm lost. Give us as much info as you can. Maybe clear YouTube data & cache then try again, this will set YouTube back to factory/new state.
I'm able to get 144, 240, 360, 480, 720, 1080, and 1440. Stock AT&T Note 9, using max screen resolution.

Thank a lot man! The developers option trick worked like a charm

I've tried recording videos with both "normal" and "high" frame rate options, it doesn't seem to do anything, any ideas why it's there?
The info button says it's the rate at which videos are captured, so would that indicate if it works you'd get slow motion video?
i've been wonderin about that option myself....and changin it really doesnt seem to do anything at all...
There is a pretty clear difference.
However, the X1i is the only phone that has the difference.
It's not completely noticable on the Xperia, but if you play the video on the computer,
there will be a noticable difference in the framerate. Give it a shot!
just open files on advanced player and press PROPERTIES
Frame Rate: > 10fps or 24 fps
the problem is that the framerate goes down when the brightness is low..then the camera gets laggy in recording mode...so there has to be a setting that we can change the minimum frame rate

Try BsB tweaks 1.6 it has an option to increase video bitrate. If this post helped press thanks.
ok,does it works on windows 6.1? and is it good to change to mpeg4 recording? what settings you used? would you please upload a video to see the difference?

I have no idea if it works on 6.1 because I don't use 6.1. The settings I used are the ones that improved camera and video quality to me they seemed like they worked I hardly use my camera and video anyway , I don't think the OP would put it improves camera and video quality if didn't. I'm not a bout to upload videos that's way to much of my time and effort when this is not my problem. Go ahead and install the cab and find out for yourself .
does i have to be carefull with this tweak, which settings i should change there?

To start off if you are installing tweaks you always want to install them in the main phone memory unless the app says otherwise. I looked into what you were saying and made an interesting discovery the tweaks are not meant for the X1's camera. In the rom I'm using now I went to my multimedia folder and found separate camera and video software( most likely HD2 or rhodiums or HTC camera and video). I went into the software and found all the options the tweaks are supposed to unlock. The hidden video formats are H.263 and 4, 3GPP2, MPEG 4, and Motion JPEG. To my suprise the highest resolution is CIF(352x288). I tried all the video formats and all are very laggy the X1's video camera is way better. I only use BsB tweaks for the Power saving, Policies, SMS Wake Up, Gyph Cache and TCIP/IP Cache. The videos you posted look actually pretty good and the one where you were riding on the bike and past the man be pushed in a wagon made me laugh so hard
hehe these videos are just samples for good quality xperia x1 videos,i found on youtube. i dont made them. my quality is not that good i think. i installed the bsb tweak now on the main memory but really no changes (
highest resolution is CIF(352x288) i would like to see a video in that quality on xperia x1...is there any other good solution? at the moment i use vga, wide screen and endless focus

Ya I seen a couple of your posts in different threads saying they are sample videos lol. Believe me when I say this it is very bad with CIF and it is not in fullscreen view mode, very laggy/ blurry when you move it's not even worth uploading a video to show it's that bad. Try macro focus instead of endless see if that improves anything. Also maybe overclocking your phone with more speed might give a better framerate also idk.

Your battery life is going to be the same regardless of the increase of mhz. Every Xperia is different so the results of how high you can push it is going to be different. Try 652 to start.
it doesnt influence the battery life?
Thats a pretty good tool...652,8mhz and its mainly faster but the frame rate in video recording seems to be the same or?
if you have some more usefull tools, let me know.
p.s. my homescreen etc.

or is it only a software limitation, and some custim rom might fix this?

I don't want full HD, I want SVGA.
there is an option for normal VGA and it works.
So its software, so it should be possible to get it also to output SVGA?
isnt there the setting in the hidden menu for 720p - which is 1280x720 resolution.. usually its the refresh rate that becomes a problem for some monitors

No, the device I want to connect it to is a ultra low power Monocular Head Mounted Display, it can display only its native resolution [email protected] nothing else.
i see, so it would be around 800x600 resolution that you require at the 60hz, as far as i know its not possible, but i cannot say im 100% correct, sorry i couldnt be more of an help
i hope you find a solution and best of luck

but failed in the regard that my HMD needs [email protected] and cant scale any other resolution.
After upgrade nougat L19c185b361 . the function of reduce power consume - low resolution 720p don't work after i do sticked on the button .
Anyone know this bug ? Or did i wrong manipulate ?
Thanks
probably obvious but I will ask anyway, have you tried rebooting since turning that setting on?

I already rebooted after setting it on. But no effect.
Got question for you.... how do you know this is not working? I remember trying this out back on EMUI 4.1.1 and and on other phones and I generally dont see a difference between 1080p and 720p however, I did see a difference between qHD and 720p.
Also, lowering screen resolution helps with FPS in games but its been proven that it barely makes a difference in battery saving.

I suppose OP know the option is not working because he still can capture screenshot in 1080p.
In Marshmallow, ROG Power Saving option will make the system run at 720p at all time.
So, when you capture a screenshot or do screen recording, pictures and videos will be in 720p.
I've noticed, from OP's screenshot, the description is now changed to "Lower the screen resolution as required". I guess, in Nougat, resolution will only be lowered when the system determines it should be.
OP should try playing heavy 3D GPU-intensive games and see whether screen resolution changed to 720p.
I need someone who have devices running on nougat b360/361 to confirm this function ( 720p resolution) working like Marshmallow 6.0 or no.
Thanks
I am on B360 and for me this function doesn't work like it was on 6.0 (for example you can see the difference in size of Viber's stickers- in 6.0 when 720p is active, stickers are bigger. Also the apps icons are more grainy. That's not the case in 7.0 ).
It's working. When you launch an heavy app, the low resolution is active. I can see a difference in Clash Royale

Hmmm maybe it only applies for games? Kinda make sense since this is where the majority of power saving will come from if you take the wording "As required".
To be honest if it work only in 3D games its actually useless a bit.
I was changing resolution and DPI all the time with my older devices(only reason why i root my phones today) and even when you use browser or watch videos, changing res to 720 give HUGE battery boost. Actually when playing game beside performance boost, battery life is not that different compared to default 1080.
Im still in 6.0(Poland and Spain still dont have update to 7.0) and after changing res to 720 I can easily get 2 days of heavy video watch + browser and its still left with 15-25%. With default 1080 I could get maybe day and half before battery hit 15%
So if it change res only when launching "heavy app/game" beside performance boost it will not give much for battery. When I was sick few weeks ago I spend whole week playing with that setting so I have some comparison of how it work on P9.
Also to check your resolution you just need to look at "phone info" in settings or just install one of many small apps that check/change res of screen.
It's work on B361. See how the font resolution is changed. You must be blind not to see this right after press the button.
Same here. Worked with MM. Do not work with B378.

1: True.
2: Only rooted
Just tested with B378. Checked by screenshot(res of picture it take) and by app that check resolution(root is needed only for changing res, for checking it work without it), and also by looking at res info in settings->phone informations
I though maybe its work only if power saving mode is turned on? NOPE
Maybe it work only if Power Saving is on, and battery is bellow 50%? still NOPE
Maybe it work only with really, really heavy 3D games? NOPE
Maybe it need some additional setting like forcing GPU rendering in programming settings? NOPE
Maybe it need reset? NOPE tried everytime.
It doesnt even touch DPI, because via programming options->set minimal width I set it to 420DPI so Im allergic to any changes and I see if its different.
So overall, yeah, it doesnt work and need to be reported to Huawei. I will later do that but it would be better if more people do the same.
low res not working for me - B378

I get last post wrong. But anyway I send report to Huawei and I would recommend that to everyone else, so maybe they notice and fix it quicker.
On my old note 4 I had an option to go up to 1440p. Now 1080p is max on my Note 9 Tmobile US. I am I doing something wrong?
Have you set your resolution to WQHD+ in the phone's display settings?
I forgot it didn't automatically do that and defaulted at 1080p / FHD+ so had the same issue, but once I upped the phone's resolution and restarted YouTube I was good to go.

Thank you for the tip
Somthing I noticed a few times on my Note 9 was that some times my media files would play very dark. Now this would only happen with 10 bit Hevc files.
So I did some trouble shooting and found that whenever I start and exit the camera in "Photo" mode this would happen.
I have put a pic for a 10 bit hevc video paused on the phone, in both instances all settings are the same, the pic titled "No Black Crush" is before using the camera and the other after using the camera and exiting in Photo mode. From the pic we can see that one pic is significantly darker and details are lost (eg. White spots on the sign and some background stuff).
The only way to fix the black crush is to restart the device.
Would really appreciate if some one out there that is using an Exynos version and plays 10bit hevc videos on the phone would help in testing some stuff out.
Edit - Ok so I guess some more info is in order.
Device info - Note 9 Exynos (Model SM-N960F) on latest official build and NON ROOTED
To replicate issue download the video in the link (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QR-5JEWNOFI3nbvbLR_80Z7BgA37Dil_)
1. Restart phone
2. Play the video using stock video player (keeping Video Enhancer on makes noticing the bug easier as screen is brighter, Video Enhancer off should also work)
3. Open stock camera and make sure "Photo" mode is selected and then exit staying in "Photo" mode (switching camera modes wont let the bug show up.)
4. Play the clip again. BOOM everything is a dark mess.
5. Restart phone and play the clip again and everything looks clear again

does changing the the screen mode from adaptive display to amoled cinema or even basic help at all?
if you get inconsistent results then it would seem that is would have something to do with the "auto" nature of the display mode. moreover the ambient lighting in the room you are watching might also be a cause. adaptive brightness might produce different results and might be tied the the screen mode as described above.
so remove auto brightness and put screen mode to Amoled cinema or even basic if you really want to compare apples with apples.

Since I have been seeing this behaviour for some time now I have actually checked to see what was triggering it. Changing the screen mode does not help. Also in the pic I attached the brightness level is the same since adaptive brightness is off.
Now I understand where you are coming from but this is not a screen illumination issue. If I play a H264 file everything works fine no black crush even HEVC files which are not 10bit play correctly, the issue is only with 10bit HEVC files.
Oh and am not sure if you are aware as to what "black crush" is, it basically is the tendency of amoled panels to make dark areas so dark that u loose details in the video. In the pic I uploaded u can clearly see that one pic is significantly darker than the other even though all settings are kept exactly the same even the brightness levels are the same but dark areas appear much too dark when the bug is triggered.

Which custom rom and kernel are u using and what extra addons if any.
