This finger print thing - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Actually not very good is it, not because it doesn't actually work very well unless you are stationary sat at a desk, but walking along with the old one your finger found the pad on the back really easily.
Now it's an utter faff, just so they can show off technology
Great for the ads but for real life the pad on the back much better
Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk

I find it works fine, had no issues using it.
I actually found the pad on the back of my s8 plus to be more of a pain to use so never bothered with it.

S8 yes, I agree
S9 was easy in real life
This new thing is just poorly thought through, tech for the sake of it
Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk

Ah, never bothered with the s9, I'm coming from the 8.

I had bad experience with the sensor too at the beginning but I did the following things and now it is much better... Actually I was hasty to set it up the first time and that was the problem..
1) use the same finger three or four times
2) ignore the indication at the screen about which part of your finger is not scanned and just keep trying
3) the most important is to scan your finger naturally like in normal conditions and not like you try to set up the fingerprint..
4) play with different areas and angles of your finger until the setting up is complete
5) after you set-up the fingerprints there is an option to test them.. Do that multiple times and see which of the three or four is not used. In a good set up all of them should show as used. Remove and register again those that do not appear at all or frequently

Cheers, one of my fingers won't work at all

That sounds like a personal problem. ?

I took the screen protector off that came with the phone. That alone improved the detection. From my experience with fps's it is best to constantly change the angle of the finger until the scan is complete. Also try holding your finger on the fps 1 second longer than normal.

I picked up a stylus today

I was at target today and found one of these in the ipad section. So far im pretty impressed. It cuts down on finger prints and it's more accurate. It also makes copying and pasting a lot easier. I really missed using a stylus with all these fancy new capacitive screens (not that I miss resistive screens).
Sometimes it doesn't register but all and all it's great. If you are thinking about grabbing one of these, go for it.

is it because the stylus shape is circle rather than square that make more comfortable to respond?
Honestly I haven't tried another yet. I think the circle is easier to predict where it will touch I guess.
I would however like a smaller point.
is it laggy if you try and draw with it
I picked up the official samsung stylus... hmm it is okay but (I don't know if it is just the screen-protector, but that will also play it's part in the whole thingy) drawing is laggy and inaccurate...
Still a good addition for marking text etc...
I wonder why drawing is laggy with them yet using your finger isn't. :/
swyped from a galaxy far far away...

Maybe it is because of interpolation... the finger has a way larger area which has contact to the screen and so there is a denser flow of information and valid (contact)points... the stylus is rather small, so there will be a lot of skipped points... the touchscreen software/driver has to interpolate the missing data and more skipped information means more lag... that's what I would guess.. :-/
just like the circle stylus, work fine

I had to download a drawing app. Seems to be ok. I really expected lag or something but it worked just fine. Better than other uses I guess. I sometimes get a dead tap unless I press fairly hard. Drawing worked pretty well.
after view days using it the circle stylus, it happened the circle get boldy and lack of responsed

[q]s-pen= awful

Does anybody else find the S.pen of the SGN really bad??.. when it comes to drawing some stuff..? Any remedy for that?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
i don't draw but i do annotate quite a lot, and it feels like the calibration is a bit off. what in particular about it is your concern?
Like, the place where i point the pen and the place where it writes is not the same, the location where it writes is a little bit to the upper left( not precise)... and its also has a latency after writing...
Its not a very big problem for me just a little critic...

I've used five s-pens so far, and two of them were significantly worse than the other three. Good news is that the problem is most likely with the pen itself and not with the Note!
Try getting a different pen (e.g. there is an official Samsung holder that comes with another pen). For the offset problem, try to switch from right to left to right... several times --- sometimes that helps to make the offset more reasonable. Also experiment with the angle of the Note as you write, often that makes a difference too.
Just my two cents...
The reason why it seems a bit of is done on purpose.
You notice this when you change your writing hand in the settings.
When it's set to your right hand, the drawing is slightly left of your pen. With the left hand it's the other way around.
This is done so you can see what you are drawing/writing and your hand is not in the way.
I know it sucks, but Samsung made it this way.

This is true, but some pens have larger offset than the others. I think some of them have sensitive elements inside aligned better. And actually this works rather nicely if the offset is reasonable, at least for me. Takes a bit of practice, but feels quite natural after a while... if you think about it, some offset is appropriate, since there are three surfaces at different depths: the writing surface, the "displaying" surface, and the actual surface which is sensitive to the pen's movements (this one is quite deep, it's behind the screen, not in front of it)...
Try different pens before giving up
Yeah the calibration is not exact to the point. When I'm writing words normally I'm not really affected, only when it comes to drawing in slow motions, the placement is off and it's frustrating for drawing little details.
However, I managed to dig out an old stylus which came with my ancient fujitsu tablet PC and it's calibrated perfectly.
I've noticed that the angle to which I hold the s-pen to the surface makes a difference in percieved accuracy.

... Just note that it requires root
It will run without root, kinda, but you'll be getting something like this on the unlock:
"ERROR: IOException! No ROOT permissions?"

With the Fujitsu pen, does it have calibration issues or extra lines if you write on it upside down, like if you were lying on your back? My biggest pet peeve with this phone is that I can only use the pen if I'm sitting upright and holding the pen just so, otherwise calibration is way off and a lot of unintended lines appear.

I've noticed this too. It's most apparent to me when I set my phone on a table, holding the pen by it's very end. Touching the screen with the point and changing the angle of the pen relative to the screen--without moving the tip of the pen;s position at all--you can see the cursor move with the angle of the pen, even though the tip stays in one place.
The best way to fix this, in my mind, is for Wacom to do on this phone what they do for a lot of their tablets--have a little dot show up on the screen when you hover your pen, so you know where you'll be drawing.

This is a damn good idea right here. Someone should forward this to Samsung before they roll out the ICS update.

Well you guys said it all... drawing details, drawing slowly, lots of unwanted lines appear...etc...
I see, so its most likely caused by the pen rather than the note itself... ill give the app(touchscreentune) a try..thanks.

Why do they put the fingerprint sensor behind the phone?

Hello fellow Nexus 5 users,
Like most of you, I have owned this beloved Nexus 5 since 2013 and feel it is time to upgrade. My original battery has gone downhill and I had to replace it with the battery from my brother's old device hoping it would last me until I got a new phone. I was thoroughly intrigued by the OnePlus3 but have decided to wait until the new Nexus drop before purchasing a new device. With the previous N5X, N6P, and the latest leaked images of this year's Nexus, it seems that the finger print sensor will once again be on the back of the phone? This makes absolutely no sense to me because if the phone is sitting on the desk, you have to pick it up or you have to resort to the old way of unlocking the phone. Also, if the phone is sitting in a car dock, the finger print sensor on the back will also become obsolete. Lastly, I'm a big fan of those wallet cases where the back cover has a slot for a few credit cards, which is also blocked by the finger print sensor if it's on the back. Why would they not put it on the front of the phone?
The Nexus 5 was a great phone, I hope this year's Nexus has the following:
-Same screen size
-Larger battery (at least 3000 mAH)
-Latest SoC
-A camera that is on par with the S7
-FINGER PRINT SENSOR ON THE FRONT OF THE PHONE.
Would buy in a heartbeat.
What say you?
it really depends on the use case.. for me, fingerprint sensor on the back is the most natural way to unlock with my index finger..

Agreed, since the size of these new phones are huge, it's easier to unlock the phone with the index phone if the sensor is at the back. For a smaller phones (e.g iPhone 5S) I would prefer it in the front bottom though.
maybe to avoid wear and tear? as we always use our home button. and i think its one of the signature of nexus devices the nav bar.
I like the clean look of the Nexus 5 with nothing on the front so I would prefer it on the back. I don't ever interact with my phone when it's laying on it's back. If I use my phone, I pick it up. It's not like the old way of unlocking is hard or anything to make me complain about not being able to get to the sensor easily. And if it's a debate about PIN vs Finger print sensor, smart lock usually gets rid of the PIN anyway in most places for me. In my opinion, the finger print sensor is just another added method to unlock the phone and not the primary method. So I prefer it on the back.
I use fingerprint sensor all over my house I have it for my bedroom door my, front door, my office and my grow room
Also have one on my laptop and I don't use my index finger on a single lock I use my thumb so yeah a sensor on the back is worthless to me cuz it would be the only one using index o will simply turn it off and use smartlock as my watch unlocks my phone the second I'm within ten feet of it

Favorite feature of Note 7

Mine is being shipped however what is everyone's favorite feature or design on this new beast?

This is my first Note so everything to me is great. The S pen I love and the screen. The only complaint is I wish the screen was a little wider. I know the measure from the end of the curve. If they would have made it 6in with the curve would have been perfect.

Old phones in my sign.
But the best part of the notes have always been the spen to me.
I had the note edge and it was lovely then the s7 edge was great but i missed my spen.
but im sure your fine alot your like when you get the phone.
Iris Scanner.... That's really cool.
Using the S-pen to take quick notes without having to turn on the phone, That comes in handy.
Being Waterproof saves alot of worry.... I'm in Fl, always around water.
Iris Scanner hands down.
My wife says I've a line for an eye and it can detect my eyes. LOL
Then tried to have my co-workers and friends tried to unlock it and they couldn't :good:
During registration It did ask me to open my eyes Wide, as the first attempt didn't work with normal eyes position.
The new fingerprint sensor is waaaaay better, this one actually works, previous models it simply didn't work right, so I always ended up disabling it.
This one, you simply touch it, and it opens up the home screen as it supposed to do.
Quick frankly the Finger Print works even better than the Iris scan, as it's more natural.
Whenever I turn on the phone, it's always through the Home button.
Coming from the S7 Edge so a lot of features I already had. I do love having my S-Pen back and the Iris Scanner is really cool. However my favorite features is the improved UI of the camera. The camera on the S7 Edge was the best I had used on a mobile devices, but the new interface makes it so much easier to use the extra features. Direct feed to YouTube Broadcasting is great to have.
Maybe not exclusive to Note 7. but the camera's focus speed and picture quality is really great, makes DSLR almost redundant. Of course S-pen is a signature of all Note series and main reason I won't buy another make, but improvements to s-pen are more incremental over previous models, than drastic. Also screen is probably one of the best, if not the best on the market ATM. And water proofing is one thing less to worry about.

Yes, indeed. I live in Florida and Im also a swimmer. Even though Im not planning to submerge this pricey beast, Im always around or in a pool, so a huge extra level of protection
This is my first note device and can easily say it's the S-pen that has me hooked. I've been constantly using it but if I'm not using it im most likely clicking the top of the pen non stop. A close second has to be the iris scanner.

I have had every single not and Galaxy device to date. I am really excited about the water proof finally. A note that has it!

did you setup the fingerprint correctly?
I know the note edge (n4) you had to swipe down which just suck.
The s7 edge was a press one. It work really good.
I always setup my fingerprints by turning my finger 270degs. making sure it gets my finger from all sides. I even go a little above the pad.
Work great for the s7 edge. but yes the note 7 FP is much faster and success rate is higher

Does your s10/s10+ Fingerprint Scanner Suck!??

Hi, I just want to share my experience with my Galaxy s10's fingerprint scanner. First of all i'm using an exynos galaxy s10 with a whitestone dome glass perfectly installed on it, so far my experience with the fingerprint scanner is awful. It's the thing the makes me rate this phone badly. i'm a person who gets their hands very sweaty often and it made me excited when i heard that this scanner will work even with wet fingers but this is what i found out with my s10's scanner. it works better when my fingers are moist. whenever my fingers are naturally dry the phone will ask me to put more pressure than the usual pressure i give, in addition most of the time it gives me the NO MATCH feedback, to the point that my phone locks itself for seconds because of the repeated failures. when i got my phone i updated it to the latest update i think it's security patch level feb 1 2019. i've tried a lot of method scanning my fingers a lot of times, i've maxed out the fingerprint slots with one finger just so it will scan it more accurately. But it's just annoying there are times it would work perfectly there are times it's awful. i've owned this phone for 4days now and everyday i always register my fingerprint because it's that annoying. How's your experience with your fingerprint scanner? Any suggestions?

Did it work any better before you applied the Whitestone and have you changed the screen sensitivity. I have the Snapdragon but haven't had that much trouble. Since I have trusted places, on-body detection and trusted devices (my watch) on, I almost never have to use the fingerprint except for logging in secure apps and they work almost 100% of the time. I do still have the factory protector installed.
Yes its crappy at the moment. I'm getting roughly 7 in 10 success rate & have to consciously make sure I press the right area. My Oneplus 6T works nearly everytime. Hopefully updates will make it better.
Mine is good but due to the physics (S9+ you simply had a Spot to lock your finger into) it is not as good as S9+.
Personally, I don't have complains when using the finger print on my S10 Plus. I used to use screen protectors on every phones. Now I don't use screen protectors anymore. The screens now days are more durable and scratch proof than people think. Just use it normally and the screen will be fine. The last couple phones (Including iPhones) that I have used has no stretches on the screen after long time usage. Ended up selling all of them as mint condition.
On the S10, the finger print sensor works better without a screen protector. Also, you can register your finger print more than once (Using the same finger) if you need to. Remember to do it with different angles as well.
Finding it very disappointing! Taken off the supplied screen protector and adding a second finger print using the same thumb did help but its still way behind a physical button! My S9 plus was perfection compared to this! I have a success rate of about 6/7 out of 10! I always feel like iam placing my finger perfectly in the right area but sometimes it just refuses to unlcock ha
I hate to big up Apple because i hate them as a company but the iphone xs works flawlessly in comparison and Face id is a dream to use compared to this crap!
