I didn't get the wizard for the camera, so the fact the flash is really nothing more than a flashlight doesn't bother me. However, it did occur to me that it would be really nice if you could turn that light on/off with a softbutton or from the start menu.
I know, it sounds weird, but I find myself using it as one periodically.
I guess I ought to look around and see what it takes to code for this thing ...
I wanted to use it as a flashlight, but I got more light from the front screen so I never got around to turning on the flash.

bad idea ...the camera flash/led will only last 10 minutes of continuous use then get dim and die. the led is crap. it a known fact .
sorry
A program that would make the screen completely white would work well. I had a similar program on an old Nokia phone I used to have.
if you start the camera and turn the flash on, then hit the power button on top it will put the phone it sleep mode. as soon as you need the light again, hit the power button and it comes right back on. works great when im djing and i forgot my mini flashlight or those batteries died.

This app made the screen white on my Compact to use as a torch, no idea if it works with the Vario as well.

The one koksie posted loads faster, but the advantage with torch is that you can also use it to keep the backlight on, for say when you are playing a game and the backlight keeps going off - i find that so irritating! To do this you need start menu mapped to a hardware button - i use the comm button.
Ah, what a crew! I agree the screen can act as a good light as well, just seemed like I could put the virtually useless LED to use .
I'll give these a try, and thanks!

One day before I went to sleep, I put my wizard to charge and, dont ask me how, accidentally pressed camera button and somehow got the LED on. When i woke up 8 HOURS LATER i found my wizard sitting there with the LED on. It was turned on all night.
2 months later, It still works to date.
Perhaps they had a bad production run of them. Of course, with my luck, that's what I would have gotten!

The LED should have a very long life of about 100 000 hours at normal voltage. It will be excellent if somebody can develop a software to turn on/off the flashlight. I always us it as a torch.

Biolover there are enough stories on the forum of device led's burning out to put one off this idea - do a search and you will see what I mean  The quality seems to vary.
Its not hard to replace the LED though, the wizard can easily be taken apart.
I have sync off, maps off, gps off, location off... and wifi set to "never on" during standby mode...
But... it takes a good 15 minutes before wifi actually turns off, which wastes a little bit of battery life
Any way around this? Eg, make it turn off wifi quicker?

Uhmmm well maybe if you were able to provide more info like rom, rooted or not, kernel etc. we'll be able to help you out more.
As of now i can tell that is not right, mine goes off immediately.
Yes, more info would help however try this go to your settings and in the WiFi settings forget your network then restart your router and re-boot your tablet off/on (not stand by) then go to the wireless settings log back in to your network.

Well, because it is not a normal thing to happen. So if it is not normal, it is a sign of a possibly bigger problem that needs to be addressed. If he is on a custom rom, then the dev would be notified to see if its on his end, to fix in the next release. And those are just two reasons why people "care about such small things". Welcome to xda. This is where all the small things are fixed. Its kinda the point.
Are you sure that's not normal? All my android devices take 10-15 min to turn the WiFi off.
It'll have a negligible effect on your battery life but if you really want it to turn off faster, the green power app on the store allows you to turn off WiFi instantly.
That's normal. If you have tasker or other similar app you can set it to turn off WiFi on lock or if you have a magnetic case, sit it to turn off WiFi when it's closed.

Don't think that's normal, wifi always turns off almost instantly for me
wifi turns off almost instantly here too. 10-15 minutes to turn off wifi is not normal in any situation. op, maybe a little background? stock or rooted? rom/kernel? mods flashed? themes?
The WiFi on my N7 turns off instantly. It did when it was stock unrooted, it did when it was stock rooted, and it does with Paranoid Android. Not sure what the issue may be. Unless you are running a different kernel.
It is normal.
I'm on CM10 and in the advanced WiFi menu is an option to alter the default WiFi timeout from 15mins to other values. I'm unsure if that option is only available in CM10 but I think its also available in stock, can someone on stock clarify that.
The advanced menu is definitely available on stock 4.1.2 I'm just unsure if the timeout is configurable or not.
But WiFi always takes some minutes to disconnect in case you decide to hit the power button to put the device on standby and then 2secs later decide to use it again.
Test it by just hitting the power button and 10secs later hit it again and look at the WiFi icon, it will show its connected. Now do it again but wait 20mins and then hit power and look at the icon and it will show its disconnected.
I guess the timeout can be affected by apps that use WiFi when the screen is off and how quickly the device sleeps when the screen is off etc.
Stock, rooted. Using Notification Toggle, my wifi turns off immediately when I touch the wifi toggle icon.

Is the concept of this thread that hard to the understand...
...of course it turns off immediately if you hit a toggle, that's the point, this post is about the timeout value, ie the WiFi timeout when the screen is turned off.

same here, it keeps turning on everytime i move my hand, and then sometimes when i want it to turn on it doesn't. I wish i could just deactivate this and use the power button / tap the screen
The answer to this problem is simple. When turning your wrist, simply flick it down with a quick rotation toward yourself and the screen will activate every time. There is nothing wrong with the accelerometer. It is just set to not turn on from random movement.
The wrist flick toward you and down is the key.
Funny mine turns on every time I even move my arm
I returned my first one and the second one is MUCH better.
i would prefer an option to calibrate this behaviour or even disable it^^
It's okay to me to tap on the screen for activating
This has has happened to me 3 times so far while I am plugged in charging overnight. I'll wake up to see that my screen is on. If I hit the power button it will shut off, and then come back on in a second or two. Even if I flip it upside down so the screen is down, I can still see that the screen is still coming on. The only way for me to fix it is to reboot the phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

what your probably referring too is active display. Which if you want off. I also have off is under the moto app
No, that's not it. I'm not talking about how it will come on every 3 seconds when you have a notification. I'm talking about turning fully back on so I can see my home screen.

Nope, that isn't checked. And normally this isn't an issue, only a sporadic thing.
Happened to me again last night, woke up and noticed the screen staying on around 5am. I tried disabling the active display but it didn't stop the screen from coming back on after I shut it off. I did find that when I unplugged it from my charger, the screen stopped coming back on. Does this give anyone any clues?

Its something you have installed.

I believe Safe Mode is still in Android. Try it. Warning: it will break your home screen widget layout.
If it is something that I installed, how can safe mode help me determine what it is?

The same reason it does in Windows. You use it to narrow down what is causing it. If Safe Mode cures the issue, you know for sure its an installed app. From there, process of elimination.
Right?
Just got the phone and have had this happen a few times also. No apps installed that I didn't have on my previous phone.
After a bit more testing I have more information. It seems like it only happens when it is plugged in and has reached a full charge. Once I unplug the phone from its charger, the screen stops coming on by itself. This is still some kind of bug, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to keep the screen off even if it is fully charged and plugged in.

Well I didn't think it was something that effected everyone, otherwise I would have found a thread on it. I'm going to try using a different charger tonight and see if that makes a difference.

By any chance do you have the notification enabled for when the battery is fully charged?

No, I don't.
Ive tried this for two nights and it doesnt seem like I've had this issue since using a different charger...
My problem turned out to be the button accidentally being pressed and the screen lock setting being set to "5 seconds" after hitting the button, as opposed to right away. So the screen was going off, it wasn't locking, and an errand touch of the side of the phone while moving it would make the screen come back on without seeing the lock screen again because it was within the 5 seconds that the setting enabled. I was not familiar with this setting being on my previous phone and the Turbo was set to this by default. Hope this helps.
I agree that it is a bug, however, I was wondering, is there a way to get rid of that screen entirely? Frankly all that screen does for me is waste the battery, so being able to not have it at all would be great.
when the mi5 is turned off and is charging the alarm does not turn on it is a big deal for me !! 6.7.21 miui8
Yes it's a bug.
Of course it won't turn on. If it did then that means it was never really off. A few devices due this and it is because they never fully shut off. This was found due to the oem wanting to make sure the device could phone home without the user knowing.
If a smartphone is off the nothing short of hitting the power button will turn it back on. Common sense really.
Try to turn off ambient display (wake on notification) and it will work fine.
