Hi all,
First off, thanks in advance for any advice.
Second, if this wrong place or a better thread elsewhere, please let me know.
Now on to the question. My battery drain is quite significant.
Phone has been on for 11h 51min. Charge is down to 45%. Ok I can deal with that (still would prefer better) but my usage is what is baffling me.
It says the screen has used 47% of the battery usage. Screen ontime is 59mins.
Is everyone else seeing usage rates this high?
If it matters, mine is an Optus XXALI5 firmware.
Thanks again.
Pete.

Thanks winwiz.
I did read through that thread but did not think it was the same issue.
Just to confirm, fast dormancy is a screen issue and will minimise my screen battery usage.
Can I apply this fix without rooting phone? Want to keep it stock for a little while.
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda premium
I think the phone has to be rooted.
Be careful though as I applied the fix as a test and my battery drain went down terribly. This is afaik becuase my network does support FD. Several users have commented in other threads that it is not Network dependant but from my tests it definately is.
Also I found that my phone became quite sluggish and do not remember doing anything else on it at the time. No big deal just re-flashed the rom and it back to normal.
Just sharing my experience and a word of caution.
EDIT: FD is not connected to the screen, it is a way the phone handles the radio in connection with the network by putting it in to a sleep state if there is no activity.

Fast Dormancy is definately Network dependant. So you really need to find out if your network supports it. Because if your network does its better to leave it on
get betterbatterystats and have a look at what's draining your battery. the screen will almost always have the highest usage percentage, it's a hungry beast.
i'm guessing your phone isn't going into deep sleep properly.
install betterbatterystats, charge the phone to 100%, use it normally, and then in betterbatterystats use the dump to file option and attach it here and i (or someone) can take a look at it.
my initial suggestion without seeing BBS would be to try disabling LTE - just use WCDMA only (or GSM only) and see if that helps. LTE is a real battery drainer.
Hi, need some help,
I got this phone a couple of days back, its an unlocked one. Battery on the phone seems to be draining faster than i expected it to. The first time i charged it, it took 3 hours in the afternoon. By night it was 20% this was after playing games and downloading through wifi, so it seemed ok. I then put it for charge overnight. The next day it still seemed to drained by 7pm only used whats app this day, so i had to put for charge again.
Once fully charged (2 hrs) I shut off wifi, bluetooth, nfc and others. Switched off smart stay options and the display is set to lowest brightness (not auto). The wallpapers is also black so it will not drain battery. Overnight without the phone being used (only thing i set was alarm) the charge went from 89% to 78%. During the day I also find the charge still dropping pretty rapidly. I have included the screen shot of the battery from the same day. Between the first pictures there is no difference in use and still drops by 3% in 20 mins or so.
Is this a problem with the battery or is that how it is?
(Stock, no changes to rom)
Not sure if this is your specific problem - but one thing I've found that kills this phone fast is bad 4G cell reception. By default the phone runs as LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Auto) in Settings->Mobile Networks . If you are in a location with patchy (or none at all) 4G Coverage, the phone wastes an inordinate amount of juice switching to high-power mode on the cell radio searching for the elusive 4G/LTE ... Just like a 3G phone will deplete its battery extremly fast in a location with no/poor 3G connectivity (inside the 'secure' datacentres I wander into occasionally that have cell blockers, I can deplete the battery in a phone in about 3 hours just due to it constantly switching to high-power 'cell search' mode as it has no details on any cells to 'hand off' to....)
The difference is palpable... inside my office, if I have the phone on the right side of my desk closest to some windows, it will receive 'patchy' 4G and I'll go through about 60% battery over about 8-10 hours with intermittent phone use (most of the battery goes to screen time as I'm a 'fiddler' whenever I leave my desk for a coffee/break/etc...) If I place it on the left side of my desk, where the reception is much worse, it'll fall back to 3G and I'll go through about 80% battery doing nothing different...
I'm now in the habit of switching the phone to WCDMA Only when I'm going to be working in the bowels of the building, as there aint no hope of 4G there...Doing this drastically improves battery life.. Likewise if I'm stuck at home over the weekend, I leave it on WCDMA, as where I live has very patchy 4G as well and I only get it if I walk outside and down the street...
Just a possible reason for the excessive drain... at least worth trying anyway... *shrug*

I have used an app called "Radio Switcher" to activate "gsm auto (prl)", when i open the app it seems to go into "Device info". It seems to work but "Network mode" does not seem to change.
I have uploaded the screenshots
Seems as though the system is using more battery than the screen itself.
The system seems to really take up way too much battery power. Mine is at 4%.
What are your sync settings? Especially for things like Weather, stocks, news etc. If you set them to sync every hour or so, your phone will keep running on the 3G network which will end up draining your battery.
Also, switch off motion. It's a cool feature, but it's not necessary. Same with auto-rotate.
Finally, use WiFi instead of 3G where possible. That saves battery too.
If you're rooted, download noFrills CPU control and reduce your max clock frequency on days where you won't get a charge. Phone runs well enough on 800mhz, but has a tendency to keep going at 1.4Ghz for no reason.
Otherwise, get a higher capacity battery

My sync is off, plus i have disabled sync for everything individuality and disabled all unwanted apps. Data service is also off, only use wi-fi. under motion only smart call is on and auto rotate us off.
I have uploaded a screen shot off after ti disable all these apps.(went to bed with 35% and was 28% in the mornin, turned wifi off before)
Will upgrading (official) phone to android 4.1.2 help (current ver is 4.1.1)? Current base band version is i9305BVALI5 i got an update on kies to i9305BVALI3. I don't think this is update to 4.1.2 is it?
I have updated to 4.1.2, and applied only gsm setting in mobile network. All apps are still disabled as before. The system still seems to be suing most amount of battery, more than the screen. I do not know what is using the system.
I have stared having the same problem a couple of days ago. Though I have sync enabled 0-24 for 3 gmail accounts, motions are on, screen auto rotate is also on. I am using nova launcher, almost all Samsung apps are frozen and most of time I am on wifi.
Now, this drain has nothing to do with the stuff I just mentioned (Enabled sync, motions...). I have all that things enabled all the time, and yes MPU and GPU are OC to 1600 and 640 MHz. But I was always getting >= 24h with ~3,5 h of screen on time. As I already mentioned, problem started a couple of days ago. Only thing which comes to my mind is that I have played with freezing / defrosting apps and I probably installed a couple of apps too. Like Beautiful Widgets and that's my main candidate to blame for this at the moment.
Though I am still not sure... Better than battery stats didn't show anything what could help. Network location locator or similar is at the top of the list of partial wake locks. But the time it hold the lock (About 25 min.) can't be the reason for such a high drain.
I have switched to HD Widgets, what I was using before (With this app one can disable auto location.) removed Beautiful Widgets, and turned off'Use wireless networks' and GPS in location services hoping it will help... So we'll see...
For me it still shows that adroid system and cell standby time is using a lot battery.
I don't get why android system and OS is using so much battery, everything is disabled. Network is on only GSM setting and i have network all the time, why is that also high? Does someone else also have the same problem?
If possible, install Better Battery Stats, maybe it will help you to identify the problem... In my case it is not of much use at the moment.

Strange idea: download an anti-virus and let it run.
Might as well give it a shot now, especially since AV is free.

So any virus should also be wiped out right?

I have installed better battery stats, and it says that battery drain is 6% an hour at idle. I have attached the screen shots. I do not have root access to access some of its functions though.
I need help with this. I have noticed that my phone battery lasts a very short when is on a 3g network, using or not data traffic
To prove this, first i left my phone before going to sleep, on 3G network at 100% and Stamina Mode On, but after 6 hours the battery go down until 82%(6 hours and 37 min sleeping). I made the same experiment but in "Only 2G" mode, and the battery go from 100% to 98%.
Also i've made the same test on 3G network and NO Data connection. Results, 100% to 80% in 7 hrs.

Finally and following the advice of an user from sony support forum, i did a factory reset using PC Companion(12.0.A.2.245). So, no root, no applications, no sync with google, no nothing. I left it at 100% and dropped to 82% in 7hrs on a 3G network without data connection.
Besides, this problem causes the projections of battery life do not change when you turn on Stamina Mode. I mean, Stamina Mode works(disable data connections) but there's no differences between have data or not, the phone uses the same battery.
So it is not normal that battery consumption on a 3g network while the phone is idle. I've made some screenshots and as you can see, the process com.sonyericsson.android.wakeup, has to many wakes. I read about this en xda-forum and is seems to be related whit Fast Dormancy, but not sure if that's the real problem.
I lost the screenshots when i did the factory reset but can see in this thread of Sony Support forum: Sonymobile forum: 3G and Battery Drain
I hope you can help me. Greetings
PS: sorry my bad english
Only thing I can suggest it's leaving WiFi on. This consumes less power when idle.
Really confused by people's problem with the battery, in use its average, but stamina mode works perfectly for me.

The 3G radio can be one of the biggest wasters of power in a phone especially if you are a long way from the cell tower or your local cell is very busy. Even when your local cell is close, when it has a lot of simultaneous connections the signal strength goes down and your phone continually tries to reconnect, in order to remain on the network, using full power.
If you are lucky to live or work near cells which don't get very busy, the 3G radio reduces its power output, and probably also doesn't have to reconnect as often.
Still, your case sounds a bit extreme, so maybe there is something else involved exchanging background data when it shouldn't be.

Thanks for the answer.
I thought the problem was the signal. So I checked the signal strength at the place where I did the tests and the results were that the signal is between -75 dBm and-85dBm. That's a good intensity. Besides I live in a small town, so I doubt that the local cell is very busy.
I think that's because the fast dormancy. Are you root? Try installing betterbatterystats and see what processes are draining your battery. In my case I had to delete de fast dormancy apk and it solved the issue.

Yes, that's one of the first things i do(fast dormancy)...and not solved the problem.
I don't think is related with the battery, because in 2G, the battery works perfectly. The problem is related to the Phone Radio. :crying:
As many of you suggested 3G is another way saying 3 times faster battery drain!
Use wifi unless you are on the go in this case if you have to use 3G

But Wi Fi is useless to make phonecalls. My problem is not related to the traffic data on a 3G network. The problem is the standby in a 3G network without Data and wifi. As you can see in the screenshot below, the phone radio consumes too much battery on stand by mode.

I was a big fan of the battery, but updating my software killed deep sleep. Wiping everything and installing from scratch fixed deep sleep.
3g is a big drainer, but stamina mode should turn 3g off when the device is idle.

Thats the problem, Stamina turn off 3G data connections(internet), but 3G phone radio(calls and sms) keep working and draining battery. So, stamina just give me 2 or 3 more hours of battery, not 4 times more battery as sony promised.
By the way, the specifications of the phone says: Stand-by Up to 635 h (2G) / Up to 734 h (3G)
go to settings>data usage>click three dots of the right top corner and click on the "restrict background data and auto sync" might helped ur problem lil bit.

Yes, I tried that too. But as I said before, the problem is not battery consumption using internet. Is what it consumes wcdma radio to stay connected to the cellular antenna, make calls, or data traffic.
Notice the difference after 7 hours standby:
2G --> 0,1%/Hr
3G --> 2,6%/Hr
I have also having same problem.
Turned off data and wifi. set only WCDMA network, enable stamina mode.
The battery drop from 100 to 84 within 7 hours.
Check the battery usage, the Cell Standby occupied 54% of usage.
Still havent test for 2G. If really 3G problem, then i will just stick with 2G when im sleeping ><
BTW, my galaxy note N7000 battery drop 0%-2% while im sleeping with using 2G network (off data wifi)
*Yea, the battery drop 0% after 7-8 hours
to reduce the number of wakelocks for fast dormancy, root your phone, then go to /system/etc/fast-dormancy and open fd_custm_conf.txt. replace the '0' of the 2 lines with the MCC and MNC numbers of your APN respectively. you can find these numbers under your Access Point Names. just click on the one that is active and scroll down until you see MCC and MNC. once done, save the file and reboot.
it works for me, the wakelocks have decreased but i still get a huge battery drain in standy mode, with wifi on and stamina mode on. hope this fixes the issue for you. cheers :good:

How do I set 2G only? The only options I have are: 4G (preferred)/3G/2G, 3G only, or 3G (preferred)/2G.

Thanks, I did find that one, but it's a bit too much for my wife to do regularly. Once it's out of warranty, I'll stick a different rom on there. For now, she's getting 2 days, so can manage with that.
My cell standby is really really high and I'm nowhere near the 6+ hours SoT that people seem to be getting here. I even followed the battery optimization guide and disable all the moto features on the phone. I also changed my preferred network type from "Global" to "LTE/CDMA" to supposedly save more power.
Is anyone else having odd drain? I attached a list of the apps I disabled as well.
Cell stand bye does seem high. Silly but I'm sure you have turned phone off and fully charged to see if it remedies?
All else fails factory reset, I know it's a pain.

I charged it while it was on fully after draining it to 1% when I first bought it. I have not turned it off or charged while it was off. I'll do that later when it is around 5% after work.
How would the factory reset help? I would reinstall the same apps again anyway so if that is the problem I wouldn't know it.
I didnt mess with any network settings but cell standby is higher than screen on my battery stats. My battery life isn't bad by any means but not as good as some others are getting
I've seen this issue reported by 2-3 other users, it's either related to the cell coverage in your area or might even be a faulty radio. Cell standby is usually high on my list but still about 1/4 of the power draw of my screen (assuming my average SoT of 6 hours) and around -96dBm (3-4 bars) signal strength. Try checking your signal strength - if you don't have an app for it, do: Settings > Wireless and Networks > More > Mobile Networks > Network type and strength.
I have this issue. My signal sucks at home. Only 3 bars most of the time.

Same issue here ... Just switched to ART and I'm going to switch from global to LTE/CDMA to see if I can knock it down a bit. Reception at my work is terrible in some spots (hospital). At home its not so bad.

Hey there to all guys
Something in my phone is causing the radio constantly be looking for a signal even though it has a signal. It seems like I'm having to charge my phone at least twice a day now. Id like to steer clear of a factory data reset if I can, but if I have to I will. Running my phone with the GPS set to device only.
The stand by percent was at 11% this charge cycle. I've read that changing the preferred network type is a temp fix, but I don't see the point in disabling 4g if its meant to run on a 4g network. I've also read that google fit maybe a possible problem area. I honestly don't know what else to do. Its really frustrating that this good phone is just plagued by these small issues. Is there any way to clear the cache on the cell radios or anything like that? Also would I be able to run the Android M version of the radio firmware on my current build of 5.1? Running 5.1 build D for Verizon.
I live in Phoenix, in the middle of the city and I work outside at different restaurants in the city, and I find it hard to believe that I can't get a better signal that what's been reported on my battery graph. Someone suggested that I update my prl list and take my sim card for about a minute, which I did, which doesn't seem to be having to much affect.
Can someone please help. Between Google services and this draining my battery my battery life isn't the greatest at the moment.

well, if your signal quality is only so so, cell stand by battery drain can be drain lots of battery, even more than your device used. speaking of, it didnt affect your battery that bad. to get better battery life, keep your brightness lowered. and if your signal is only so so, then i wouldnt expect a much better battery, as signal quality has a huge role in battery drain.
