Fingerprint reader unlocks with any part of your arm - OnePlus 7 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

my son was messing around with my phone trying to unlock it - he put his forearm over the screen and hey presto - it unlocked after about 2 trys. He repeated this several times so its clearly not a one off. I also unlocked with my upper arm after about 8 tries. try it yourself (doesn't work on hairy part of your arms)..
Video of it happening

Interesting, Tried it 10 Times myself but the Phone doesn't even try to recognise my arm.

I think you Enable Smart Lock by mistake
go to Sittings /Security & Lock Screen / Smart Lock and Disable On-body detection

Please update the thread title. It is incorrect and misleading, as it currently is.

I thought it was common knowledge your offspring have the same pattern on their forearms as you do on your thumb.
Seriously though, probably your fingers were dirty and you may have left an imprint over the sensor. Not surprised since they say these sensors aren't as secure.

Launching Quick Capture with Password Lock

Hello, I was wondering if there is any way to get Quick Capture to work with a lockscreen password. I can't seem to get it to work. Any advice?
Works for me. :good:

Well...it works for me when the phone is unlocked (I have a 30-minute delay before it relocks). But if the phone has locked to the point of needing the PIN again, I'm pretty sure I can't get the camera to come up (or use voice controls) without unlocking it.
Wish you could get into the camera and take photos without the unlock...maybe I should just buy a bunch of skip dot stickers and stick them to the pocket of every pair of pants.

I tried with passcode lockscreen... Maybe Pin is different? I don't see why it would be.

Quick capture works for me too, with a pin lock. I just can't access the gallery.

Never mind, I figured out what it is. When I set up my corporate account, some policy it has apparently doesn't allow me to open the camera or anything at all without unlocking the screen. Touchdown it is then! Using Touchdown for my corporate email, I can put a pattern or pin lock and the gestures all work. Thanks!

[Q] Active Notifications

Is it supposed to continuously flash even when there is nothing to report? My phone will flash an active notification so long as it is face up (then gain I can't tell when it is face down) even if there is nothing to report. It will just flash the key/lock pad.
I think it does that when it sense some sort of vibration and thinks the phone has been moved slightly. I noticed it when it was in my generic car dock while driving.
I think it's meant to do that in order to act as a sort of notification led. I personally like how it turns on occasionally so I can glance at it while it's sitting on a desk and see any notifications

Mine does that, although I think it has to be activated. It seems really sensitive to being moved at all (not a problem IMO since it doesn't use much battery). I don't think it is supposed to do that without it sensing some sort of movement though. I also find it helpful to just be able to glance over and see if I have a text.

Well if you have a text it should start flashing cause you have a text...
This is flashing even though there isn't anything to report. That's why I find it odd. There is nothing to report, so why is it flashing?

Because you bumped the phone and the accelerometer detected movement, and it thinks you may want to unlock the phone.
This is the feature that enables you to pick the phone up off the table and unlock it without pressing any physical buttons.

I did not bump the phone when it is lying face up on the marble counter or when it is on the corner of my desk well away from my keyboard and mouse.

Accidental phone unlocked in trousers

Hi All,
My Nokia 9 unlocks in my trousers even if I manually lock it.
What's your experience in this area?
For me the fingerprint reader is unreliable at unlocking, especially in areas where there less then normal lighting, shadow included.
Now I'm sure my trousers unlocks my phone as well, this would only be possible with a false positive from the fingerprint reader, do you agree?
Cheers,
Peran
same thing happens to me so i turned off fingerprint and just use a pin now its better then pocket dialing
My problem is bit different, I've posted a thread about it - when ringing in pocket it answers or rejects the phone call while moving inside. I use a pocket locking app that uses the proximity sensor. It's tought to drain the battery, but I haven't noticed such problem.

I solved these problems by simply always having the phone in my pocket in such way, that back of the phone is facing my leg.
I experienced same issue after turning off fingerprint reader.
This fixed it:
Settings - Security & Location: set "Screen Lock" at least to "Swipe" so your phone won't unlock in your pocket.
Did it fix it for you?

Hi, I've the same problem. Did you find any other solution than using 3rd party app?
This needs to be reported to nokia for fixing it in upcoming updates.

I wonder is there a kernel that actually increase the speed of the pop up camera? So face unlock work faster? Hahaha

Face unlock is totally unnecessary or maybe I should say involves extra steps on this phone.
1) Its software based so can be unlocked with facial similarities.
2) you have to actually turn on the device & swipe up to activate the pop-up.
Thus fingerprint is much faster & efficient to use as it's already always on

1) Yes and fingerprint while having way less chance of that is prone to similarities as well
2) That is bad, in my opinion it should automatically pop up when activated via button on the side or tapping on a notification on the lockscreen
About faster and more efficient... The fingerprint scanner is too low to be comfortable and i prefer to press the button on the side and comfortably swipe up than try to reach the fingerprint sensor.
I really wish that whole under screen sensors while cool concept would move back to what Sony did with fingerprint sensor on the side so you unlock when you just grab the phone.
think what would happen, if you where to press a button accidentally and the cam popped up in your pocket...

Question Finger print and lock screen

The success rate hit of the finger print scanner is much lower with the lock screen than with the screen saver. While with the screen saver it is effective and quick , it more often than not that with the lockscreen the fingerprint identification is rejected.
Any ideas? solutions? I already deleted and printed new finger print few times already.
I find that it's total garbage. It works about 10% of the time and I've redone adding my prints over and over. I've tried most of the steps others have and find that it doesn't help. Someone said to do a factory reset and no I'm not going to do that. I just don't use it anymore and will probably get rid of this phone soon. I want to use SD cards again and have more memory as 512 is just not enough. The reader on the Note 9 was so much better.
Not sure what you guys are doing or not doing, but my print reads all the time whether screen is on or off. Get use to where the sensor is also make sure you don't have dry hands
No complaints here. Work 99 out of 100 times on both screens
Can't complain either, working perfect here and very fast, too... Btw with stock screen protector, if that matters....

I am doing all of the above , just when AOD is active the success rate is vey bad , when normal screen saver is on , the success rate is much better.
Tnx
I was having no issues before a screen protector.. now I don't even use it because I can never get my finger print to read.

Are you using a screen protector/shield?
I have learnt I need to press harder. I used to have a Pixel 2 XL FPR on the back which was really sensitive. Using a phone with FPR under-screen was new for me, you do need to be firmer when pressing your finger down and after training myself for a few days I don't have any issue with unlocking now. I have fitted two S21Ultras (mine and friends)with the White Dome tempered glass and that has not impacted us either.

It's hard to miss where the sensor is as it's pointed out on the screen when using it. As for dried hands that too seems not to matter.
Folks I'm guessing you think you're being helpful when you say that you're not having a problem with your phone as a response to someone who is have a problem. To me that's like me taking my car to a mechanic and telling them my car isn't working properly and them telling me that their car is working just fine. I worked for many years as a computer consultant at a major university in upstate NY and never once did I respond in this fashion because it's pointless.
But he was wondering if his phone was faulty..you being an analyst should realise that if most of the replies are positive that in itself helps him

Hi.
No , as it was unpacked from the box.
This has started to be an issue on my a.o.d.
Was ok but I changed the icon and it seems to be hit and miss now.
I just double tap the screen and bypass it

My Icons also changed , so that might be the issue.
Problems solved. The cause of very low hit rate of the fingerprint scanner on AOD in lock screen was new icons i dowloaded from Galaxy store. When i installed the original , no more missed prints
No complaints here. But it completely works
