Hey CDMA Tab Owners,
Hopefully we get off to a good foot this time but I was really curious what some of your thoughts and ideas would be for a new ROM? I notice the selection is a bit thin with a single ROM for each. I've been dabbing around the last couple days and I think I have a fair idea of where development stands for the Tab right now. Primarily GSM but I'd like to start some CDMA development of my own. Anyone looking for something besides what is already out there? (Don't say a HC port , not happening, yet.)
I'd love to hear some ideas. My thoughts on this are to start easy and have a primary focus of making the tablet a better, well tablet. I like AOSP/CM6/CM7 as much as the next guy but they just don't feel right on a tablet. So I definitely am leaning towards trying to optimize the tablet experience as much as possible to differentiate it further from a phone. Maybe look into some custom apps, nothing is off the table.
Please keep this clean and thoughtful.
Thank you.
I've been so confused as to why there is such a small amount of development for the CDMA tabs.
Anyways, thanks for taking a leap...I think a custom ROM, for starters, should be something that is deodexed for theming capabilities and has all of the bloatware removed to save space. I'm not too worried about having an OC kernel, yet, since I tried the one that is out for CDMA tabs and my phone bricked
I am willing to test what you put out, so let me know what you are able to come up with
Liberty or something like it !
I own a Droid x as well as my tab and would love to see Liberty or something like it. I would love to see a pulldown bar text editor, the Liberty toolbox where you can tweak settings yourself. I like the Khasmek orange theme and Im running it now with Voodoo rom with lag fixes and running like 2200+ quadrant, it's silky smooth I love it but would love to see more color options and more attention to the device. Something that optimizes the system as much as possible to save the battery and make the device last longer between charges. Nothing too specific just want Liberty, Apex, Rubix (which I haven't tried on my X but hear its good) Doesn't even have to be named any of those names, can be a mix of all of them with a different name...I would really love to see more development for this device my hope was restored when i saw Khasmeks orange theme and put it on my tab !!
ok
apparently only like 3 of us care ! lol
is it me or is it the rom developments for incs has slowed down significantly?
i dont see any new roms popping up.. most of the recently active roms have slowed down too.. are we getting left behind?
think (hope) it will pickup after first official ICS Sense roms starts to leak. on the other hand, incredible S is starting to be a bit outdated (although it has some decent hardware), more focus seems to be on the dual core, more popular devices. we gotta admit, incredible s isn't that popular - we don't even officially have it on any carriers in my country.
I think the main cause is 'android fragmentation'. You may have heard of this term before. There's too many android devices, each further HTC device release caused all of us to separate into different development sections.
Back in the G1, Nexus one days it was much easier since there were relatively few devices..
Now all the new stuff's out, lots of people want to jump to Galaxy Nexus, so on.

The funny thing is dual core doesn't offer much improvement over the single, it seems like a lot of hype going on over nothing. probably over 3/4th or I dare say 90+% of the market is still written for single core applications.
I have the asus transformer 1 and most times I feel like performance is on par if not the same with the IncS, but when compared to my HTC Flyer (View) it feels much speedier since it's got a 1.5Ghz clock speed, the extra 500mhz shows sometimes. It takes heavy games like Shadowgun to see the difference between all devices, which can't be seen much in general surfing and regular phone related app use.
This is one thing that Apple has the advantage to in their gameplay strategy for devs, since they keep the releases specific, once a year. Development of their devices can be pooled and properly 'coordinated' without them moving onto different branches due to hardware, SoC, camera issues and so on.
Agree, if the first ICS HTC ROMs are leaked, development will gain momentum.
Right now, lots of work is spent on getting the camera working in ICS AOSP.
also, we gotta look at this ROM development as a hobby of the devs, one that usually starts with enthusiasm but over time proves to be very time consuming and falls last on their list of priorities. and unfortunately not a lot of people are willing or have the knowledge to fill in for the devs that get out of the game. i'm still reading up on android basics and kernel development, trying to make my first mix. Custom ROM development won't pay the bills, its mostly charity work.
You got to be grateful and appreciate their work.
Just last week there was a developer inviting testers for his vivo port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475459 and yet strangely, I don't see you contributing anything to the thread... in fact the response from the whole incredible s community was actually pretty unwelcoming. If I was a developer I would bypass this phone also, which seems to be pretty much what happened 6+ months ago.
Somehow, I missed that thread. I tend to not really read the index in general section often but I read the index of the dev section frequently.
I'm trying to jumpstart some action into the IncS, may not be much, but I have been building CM7.2 kangs and in the middle of testing building a CM9 kang, see how it goes.

i understand that, but the point that i want to point out here is that is our device getting left behind? im already thinking whether to sell my incs off and get a sensation instead but thinking back how hard nik and the guys worked so hard, it held me back for a moment
So you need to flash your phone 5 times or more per day to be satisfied? Why not use it instead? Heavy case of ORD .
hey bro,see this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490881

lol ORD. not that man.. it's just that i see new roms popping out in the dhd section and the people there are always active and they never sleep. just wondering how can the dhd (old phone) be more popular than incs (newer) lol

i saw it bro. im pretty much worked up right now haha~ cant wait to try it!
There's a lot of things ppl can "masturbate" to with their phones. Like popularity with more ROMs like Desire HD, Sensation, Galaxy S2. I do it to longer battery life, better camera, radio reception, and it also fit better in my hands and palms ( at least compared to the DHD). More ROMs do not mean better quality ROMs, I'm fully satisfied right now with ARHD, and with the state of Quattro, I haven't even tried it. We're getting ICS officially that's good enough, I can wait for another stable custom ROM based on that. Be happy with what you know and have, ignorant is bliss. And I'm kinda gettings tired of ORD myself, maybe a case of cured one, until something remarkable new popped up .

It's like you said =)
Sometimes you don't need a lot of things to have a great experience.
I remember back in the LG P500 days, there was only one rom and one kernel and the thing was fantastic.Even later new tweaks came, new roms, new kernels but the simpler ones were the best.
I like very much nikhil007mmus's work and Virtuous Team work, both very stable and fast.
I even suggested nikhil007mmus to talk with Francisco Franco to share some ideas to make even greater kernels for our device (kernel devs, don't get me wrong, I am not saying your work is bad, I don't even test it, but what I do know is that this man makes GREAT kernels, with great performance, great battery life and it keeps them simple.I tested his kernels in the P500 (Wich made the thing fast as hell (For a 600MHz device of course) and in the Nexus S (I got 2 full days of battery life with wifi,3g,lots of calls, etc etc and fast as hell).
Hope it get's even better here =)
Problem is the Incredible S was not a popular phone to begin among devs. Not like the Nexus One, Desire HD, Sensation and Galaxy S II.

The bad and nice thing of HTC phones is, they have a bunch of devices with practically nearly identical internal HW. Thus you don't actually really need that many devs on one device in particular. The way I see it, quality is way more important, we already have Android fragmentation like some say, now we also have custom ROM fragmentation . All Sense 3.5 roms failed for me when toggling data. It would not be that much of a problem on Samsung as they don't disable data during call, but HTC do, and sometimes after call data doesn't come up which is a major problem for me as I need auto-sync for a bunch of services and it is the most annoying bug of all. I wish devs collaborated more for less ROMs but better quality. It also means less duplicated effort.
For now I'm using a ROM Cleaned ARHD 2.1.3 with Ultra Smooth Rosie, batt mod, odexed, and some tweaks in init.d. It's smooth like butter and I think that I can be happy until whenever ICS comes out, unless some Sense 3.5 custom ROM devs fixed the bug above. Just use your phone, the best is yet to come. And if you're too trigger happy buy Samsung GSII to flash around and chaotic development. My brother has one and I am actually the one modding it for him. It's insanely fast yet I do not want it (because of aesthetic, functional reasons and knowing what is enough) even though I can afford it.
Despite going through several threads here and somewhat failing on easy rooting, found a one-click via YouTube, MotoFail_Windows something or other I believe it was. Seems simple enough.
However, in looking through Android Development here for this device, there doesn't appear to be many ROMs, am I missing something? Had no idea so much effort would be spent making this phone work for GSM folks. Any and all help for a newbie D4 owner who has every intention on rooting/flashing/tethering in the very near future is MUCH appreciated.

Rooting is pretty easy. I would recommend using jsnweitzel's Droid 4 Utility. Super easy to use.
Unfortunately you're not missing something in regard to ROM development. It's really fallen off here recently. Best thing to do currently is probably update your D4 to the most current Moto ICS leak. The CM9 and AOKP builds for the leaks are fairly stable. If you don't want to go that route I would recommend myfishbear's Eclipse port for GB.
The good news is it sounds like hashcode (main D4 dev) is getting closer to getting us up and running with the kexec kernel exploit that will allow custom kernels. Hopefully, once that gets going, ROM development will pick back up.

There really are no good GSM QWERTY phones out there right now. There's a couple of Blackberry-style ones which are awful and the Sony Xperia Mini which is also awful. Both have tiny keyboards. Most GSM QWERTY people seem to be hanging onto their old HTC Desire Z (which you will know as the T-Mobile G2) or coming here and getting a Droid 4. There really aren't any other options.
For US folk wanting custom ROMs. The process is actually the same as getting GSM support, root, flash the latest ICS leak, install safestrap, install either AOKP or CM9. You can follow my guide for getting GSM to work since it's actually the same process.
I've added to the OP instructions for putting AOKP or CM9 on there, both of them are the same low level stuff, produced by Hashcode, with the ROM-specific framework grafted on top.
Awesome input, thanks guys (and gal). Unfortunately the kid trying to sell it apparently was unaware the phone was active in his "brothers" name. This is of course after calling Verizon to make sure the phone was clean. $280 in the box, my instincts should've kicked in but the kid actually seemed sincere. Ah well, still keeping my eyes peeled and will eventually get one so this is helpful info. Thanks again.
Currently have a Xperia SP, but need a little extra money in my wallet and just to add another reason, in all honestly there isn't enough ROM support for me personally, and i'm not one to wait
Thinking about getting this OR the HTC Sensation...
Seen the great ROM support for this phone, so would like to know a few questions if you wouldn't mind taking the time to help me
What is the camera quality like? (xperia SP is awful in this department)
Is it a "fast" phone? any really noticeable lag?
if the phone is locked to a network can you still unlock the bootloader? (Xperia's tend to not let you if you are locked to a network 99% of time)
and would you choose this over the sensation? I mainly play a few games, browse internet and text..... OH and install ROMS.
Thank you
I can not compare models and I might have other needs than you (I am not a gamer). But considered the age of this phone, an used one can not be expensive, and there are some great fast and stable ROMs out there and there is ongoing development.
Furthermore, it is impossible to brick: you can change bootloader (it can not be locked), ROM and kernel as much as you like and there are excellent tools for doing so. Try to look at my post here.
You have to understand, it is not a state of the art phone, and in order to use all features (BT and HDMI-output), you will probably have to run a ROM based on an older CM version. Please note that CM has not released stable versions since CM7.2, and will not, but some have managed to modify CM10-CM10.2 to run on p990.
I am very happy with the phone and like to follow development on this forum!

Here are my 2 cents. The main problem that plagues this otherwise quite likeable device is the RAM, or lack thereof. CPU as well as GPU are quite powerful despite being almost 3 years old.
Though one thing that goes in its favour, as you rightly mentioned, is the support of awesome developers. Guys like pengus77, tonyp, jishnu, sreeprajay, spyrosk & all the usual suspects have done such a awesome job of the utilizing every single ounce of its potential to the fullest.
It's usually fast as long as you manage your resources well. Don't allow too many services chewing precious RAM in the background. Using apps like "Greenify" comes quite handy to achieve the same.
Still, not a bad device to tinker around as long as one doesn't set his expectations a bit too high. Personally, I would suggest you to choose Sensation over this primarily for more available RAM. Having said that, Sensation has its own fair share of issues too like the infamous "death grip".
Basically choose your poison
Sorry to interrupt, but i'm in the same situation. Just changed my phone, and i like this one a lot more than a newer Samsung.
I'm looking for a rom, anything above CM7.2, preferrable 10.x at least with HDMI, BT and WiFi hotspot working.
I have flashed about 5 roms on the above CM10.x and everyone is missing a different thing, be it camera, BT or WiFi hotspot, even battery eating issues. (why no one makes a full one?)
And all lack HDMI.
I would use even a rom based on ICS if it has everything on it's place.
Altough, i really liked the new lock screen on CM10.2 meanwhile overclocking and Kowalsky opened a few doors.
Does anyone know of any mostly stable rom closest to this?
Which would be the newest ROM of any flavor with everything working and no battery issues?
I tried quite a few ROMs & here's my set-up. The best so far I could find in terms of performance, stability & battery life was pengus77's "Unofficial CM 10 ROM" coupled with his own Kowalski M1 Stable Kernel.
Though being primarily a CM10 based ROM which is a derivative of 4.1.2, it will not have lock screen widgets if that's the thing you really care about. As far as camera is concerned, I use jishnu sur's camera mod.
Thanks for your answer and my apologies for the thread opener for the kidnap.
I dont care much for the lockscreen widgets. Is just something that could be helpful.
I'm having real trouble with battery life when 3g enabled, overnight my battery drop about 1%, today i enabled 3g and tt went down by almost 30% in only 2 hours. Quite dissapointing issue.
By any chance do you know where could i find more info. about HDMI not working issue? I can't believe that no one ported the driver or worked it out since it appeared.
Frankly, I have neither tested HDMI out function nor it has any real world use in my case. My best guess is it'll work with Stock based Custom ROMs & stock ROM itself of course. You may test it out with Pengus77's ROM if it works.
why don't you want to downgrade to another better phone, for example to Xperia M it's really cheaper and much better than Optimus 2x.
Title speaks for itself really, I'm a long time Android user but this is my first Samsung device, just wondering if there's anything I need to know or do to optimise my device, I've done a little research before hand before I bought the device & I've read a few places that say the Exynos is underclocked & would be a beast if used at its full potential, so I've got a few questions:
1. Is there a kernel I should be using for better battery or faster speeds?, Or am I best staying on stock?
2. Root or no root?, Lemme know your opinions.
3. The hardware is great however I'm not sure about the software (yet), I'm gonna use the stock software and give it a chance but assuming I don't like it, is there a way to replace majority of the Samsung Apps with Google's?
Feel free to gimme your opinions and experiences, I appreciate any replies, look forward to see how you guys are finding your Note 9's :highfive:
