Microsd card dead - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hello,
This sounds weird but Note 9 killed two of my sdcards. Both of them were Samsung branded. One was new and the other was a bit old.
The only cause I can think of is that I pulled the sim tray out when the phone was still switched on. I suspect there is some kind of short circuit when the tray is pulled out.
This is a dual sim N960F/DS model.

did you do to storage menu and formatted it?

Yes, it no longer is detected in Android phone. On Linux desktop it appears dead as well.

wow ok then...

Same thing happened to mine as well. I have the Verizon variant note 9 and it killed my SD card. Card was formatted, not removed before being ejected. Something isn't right.

Damn.. I Bet You Guys Lost A Lot Of Porn...

Same thing for me. My Note 9 won't recognize my SanDisk 128gb card. It was random and sudden, one day it was fine, then it was missing. My laptop recognizes it and I can access what's on it, but I cannot format it. It's just half-dead in the water.

[Q] EXT SD Memory card disconnects and reconnects?

I'm rooted and have the newest update.
I am using a Sandisk 32GB memory card that I used in my Note 3 for the last year with no issues.
Every once in while, the Note 4 shows that the Sandisk card was removed without being unmounted.. and then after 30-60 seconds, remounts itself. It has done this now 3x today. Once while laying on a table untouched and once while I was using the camera to take pictures. I checked and the card is totally seated properly.
One thing I did notice.. when I went to install the newest update with Kies, it told me to unmount the SD card... and I clicked unmount a few times, and it wouldn't unmount.. So I had to shut down the Note and take out the card while it was off.
Has this happened to anyone? Any ideas how to fix this?
Try cleaning the contacts on your card with a pencil eraser.
I've seen that on my old GS3, be very careful, few weeks later I started getting errors on SD card and then SD card no longer worked with complete loss of data. One card I was able to revive after full format, nothing could be done with the second one. I suspected either something wasn't connecting properly inside or some software issue, I also suspect that the card gets corrupted, when unmounting happens during write cycle and if phone updates headers or directory entries when this error happens, that's when you loose the whole card. I never had this happen on my Note3, hate to see this coming back on Note 4.

Argh.. that sounds horrible. I will do a full backup of my card tomorrow just in case (Titanium backup, SMS backup, etc). Thanks
Yeah I'm actually getting this too. It would just randomly unmount and remount when the card is being used. I thought ibfixed it by checking for errors but it came back lol. Hope a real fix is found soon.
Ps - was using a 64gb SanDisk on my note 2 for a year no problem.
More than likely, the SD card is going bad. You better backup asap!
These are precisely the signs of the card before it kicks the bucket. I've owned several SanDisk cards and never again will I go with them. As I've mentioned before on these forums SanDisk cards are very weak in its integrity and are no longer of decent quality. The problems you're facing is proof of that.
Go with a Samsung card. The Pro series. It's the best you're going to get. Lexar is good too, but pricey.
Most pro photographers will say SanDisk is the "yugo" of sd cards.

My only real question is, why it's happening right as I swap it to the new Note 4? I am very careful with my devices, and i did not even touch the gold connection part. Bummer
I had this problem until I formatted it using the note 4. So I'll wait and see.
Try samsung sd card evo.

Yup, just came back to report this. I was like f it, im just gonna format. After formatting, all issues are now gone. I will report back if it does return.
ps - i did do the test on it afterwards by taking like 30 pictures and browsing them in the gallery. Prior to the format, it would always unmount 100%. Now it browses with no issues.

Don't know if you guys checked out the SD card thread but we mentioned this . For me and some others Samsung devices don't play well with SanDisk cards. I burned through 3 of them on my note 2 with the same issues you guys have. Back up now! Because those cards will die soon. You can Google it Samsung and SanDisk card errors and you will find many many threads. This time around I learned and got a Samsung evo 64gb for about $39 on Amazon. Just a heads up.

I read the thread you mentioned, but this same Sandisk SD card worked perfectly fine in my old Note 2, so maybe it's a recent issue of the newer phones. that were released after Note 2. I got a Samsung Pro 64GB for about 10 dollar more on Amazon.

It's so weird they work for a while then die. All I know is I'm going to avoid SanDisk cards in Samsung phones at least.
rofl, so my co-worker had gotten a free 32 GB Samsung sd card from samsung with his new S5. I told him lets do a switch with my 64 GB Sandisk Class 10. We tested it to make sure it works fine on his phone and of-course it does. The samsung card is also quite a bit faster than the Sandisk I gave him. We both did a bench. Its a win win in my books lol.
I've had several micro sd cards faulter on me, resulting in unrecoverable data and every one of them were SanDisk. I'm staying away from SanDisk like the Ebola virus!

Dual SIM and memory card?

As per the title, if you have the dual SIM variant does it allow use of a micro SD card as well as 2 SIMs?
It's a hybrid dual sim so you will choose a second sim or micro sd.
It can be done—search for the SIM SD hack, it was done successfully on Note 7 and earlier phones. It requires some fine hacking of both the second SIM and the SD.
I'm sure it will be attempted successfully—I'll do it once I get the phone.
I would not recommend it.
Me either. It's a bold move on a $1,000 phone, and I think Samsung wound up blocking it anyway.

I wanna try it anyway, do you have any links of where you've read they blocked it - I'd like to see how and if it can be overcome.

Edit: I doubt your information is true: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmJI3BQUHF4
It works on the S8+, I think it'll be doable on the Note 8.
It can be done and should be done. Right now I have the hack installed in s8 plus HK dual sim.version, 128 gb internal 256 sd card.
It worked very well in every phone with hybrid dual sim from samsung and huawei
Just see youtube videos to understand what you have to do
does anyone tried the dual sim hack for note 8? I'm coming from s7 edge with dual sim and micro sd simultaneously. My note 8 arrived last saturday and I can say that the micro sd slot seems fit and tight compare to s7 edge. I'm afraid to break the SIM tray or it may be stuck inside so I remove the SIM on my micro sd for now.

You can try "simore sim adapter", it's unique one I used it on s7 edge, now planning to get it as soon as my note 8 will arrive

thanks for the suggestion. But I did not use and adapter on my S7 Edge. I just cut the sim contact and paste it on my sd card. I'm just afraid to do the same on my note 8 since it is a bit tight and fit compare to S7 Edge sim tray.
Some guy did it when note 7 came out, it got stuck and he couldn't remove tray.
What if this SIM but comes off, your phone will be screwed as you will likely crash it into debris trying to remove the tray

I'm trying to do it - so far no luck. The tray really seems very tight and it's not going in, seems it would get stuck - I'm gonna try scrape the card some more with a scalpel to see if it helps. Scraped off the top bump on the card - not good enough, we'll see...

seems this is the action of samsung for people doing the microsd with sim hack. Maybe someday there will be a sim card tray mod instead.

Any luck? i had a samsung A3 2017 and it worked beautifully. yes, it was tight but the youtube instructions were pretty solid. didn't have to scrape the microsd... used a very thin double sided tape
I concluded that it's impossible on the Note 8—I scraped all the plastic of on the SD card and still there was super big pressure midway through trying to force the tray in—leading me to the conclusion that the tray would get stuck inside.
Damned Samsung…

Exactly HOW do you plan to do that? Nothing to do with software but the hardware tray itself. The tray will physically only allow either one Sim and one SD card or two SIM you cannot place three in that tray there is no space to do so?
Ryland
Any body else tries this on the note 8? i did the hack on my s8plus. Hoping i could just transfer it on the note 8

Like this
And it works perfectly on my note 8 as screenshot shows.
To all those afraid or interested:
1. Yes it works
2. If you are careful you will not break your phone
Best
D.
But how did you manage it? Like I said I scraped the card—made it much thinner and still when pushing the tray in I felt significant pressure, felt it would get stuck.
Can you push the tray out from the phone? Can you post a close up picture of the cards in the tray to see how much they protrude up and down?
Also failed in my case despite considerable filing. They've definitely tightened up the slot to curb on users doing this, for some reason?? But you can buy extender adapters which are very low-profile and still likely to work I'm sure. I was very disappointed to see that they combined MicroSD and Nano sim so that only one can be exclusively used in the slot. Poor design. All 3 should be possible without any difficulty! Are we not paying for this convenience?

Two sims and SD card possible.

Although anyone with Mate 8 or Mate 9 probably knows already, you can cut the SIM card to attach it to the bottom of a MicroSD card and insert two SIM cards along with an SD card.
Although it's probably not very big news, I've confirmed this also works with Mate 10, with no issues.

I am worried if there is a risk that SIM tray stays locked in. What do you say? Thks..
i used it before on my p9 for 1 year and half and now on Mate 10,working perfectly, nothing to worry about
To be sure before spending half a limb to by it.
The place for the second sim on mate 10 pro can host a micro-sd card ? Like on mate 8 and 9 ?
It's the only thing that make me stay on mate 9...

Anybody else's SD cards keep going corrupt?

I have a 64gb Samsung Evo+ SD card, and in the two months I've owned this phone the card has become corrupt - Android recognizes that there is a card, but I cannot read/write to it. I can take the card out and put it in my PC and do a CHKDSK and get the data off of it.
Any idea what causes this? Or is the card shot?
I have exact same card and haven't run into this issue.
I had issues with my SD card on the regular E4 (Non Plus Variant), popped it into the E4 Plus and haven't had any issues. It seems Moto has some bad SD readers floating around.
I'm using that same card for a few months. No issues.

Are you using that card as internal storage? That'll burn one out real quickly since they're slower than the actual flash hardware on the device

Nope. I don't see the point in that. I want to be able to take my card out if the phone gets damaged.
I have been having this issue for months now! I am using a E4 perry and it seems like when I torrent and save to the SD card (as portable storage) this happens.

I'm having the same issue with my E4 as well. I noticed that it's only the 64GB cards that don't play well. In all the other E4's I have, using a 32GB card seems to do just fine.

But it would also need the software activated. I think someone did it once in a Galaxy Note 8, but I don't think it'd be the same.
