Shock while charging ? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

Guys it has been almost 5 weeks that ive purchased the device and ive been getting slight electric shock from the metal frame when i use it with the shock case when i charge !!! Also the touch and finger print sensor seems to be a bit messed up while charging ..is it any thing serious? And is every body facing this issue?
And its not earthing issue I've tried it with different wall sockets extension chords and everything

What you describe does not make sense. The stock cover covers up the sides pretty well, so how can you touch metal while with cover on?
Also the fingerprint sensor is built into the screen, so are you saying there is shock when you touch the screen? Also very unlikely as glass screen prevents that amount of electricity being passed thru, it wouldn't be enough to shock you.
Better be safe than sorry, you might want to take a video and return the phone.

ive seen a video on youtube from an indian user who was also getting shocks from the phone and eventually it would not switch on anymore so he had to get another one through the warrant. I am looking for the video but i didnt find it yet.

Lol sounds interesting. Would like to see the video.

I dint mean the sides when its on charge just slightly touch the upper metal portion of the frame!!!most probbaly with out the cover the shock is not noticed cuz a large part of frame is in contact and thus the electricity passes throug!! And i dint mention shock coming out of fingerprint!!! I told the finger print scanner struggles a bit while charging ...not sure if its cuz of any internal shock

Sounds like earthing issue, get local electrician to check your cabling

I also tried removing the case and shock was gone so really confused about the situation as everything is shout due to corona outbreak so I can't take it to service center.

Chargers supply DC current through the USB cable. 'Earth' makes no sense in a DC circuit, therefore it cannot be an earthing problem.
Also, virtually all USB chargers have a plastic case and so will invariably have no earth connection. Even if the plug for the charger has an earth pin, the chances are that it is not connected to anything.

I using k20.. during charging I feel vibration(current flow)in metal plat..why?? No earthing problem or charger problem

The battery in the phone supplies DC current and requires a DC current to charge. The charging brick delivers DC current to charge the battery.
If there is an AC current going to the phone when charging, you'll instantly kill the phone.
Any electric shock perceived when charging is not a result of a residual AC current on the phone case.
It is NOT an earthing problem.

have you replaced ur handset ?

Disable screen wake up when charger is connected on tw rom

Is there a way to Disable Screen Wake up on Charger is Connected on a TW ROM?
I know its possible on some Cm based Rom..
My problem is my usb charging port had a short circuit and shows charging even if its not connected to a charger..
It wakes up the phone and says its connected then it shows not connected.... connected again(screen turns on) and phone heats up all day long.
Samsung service centee is very far from my place so im just finding some workwaround for it..
And I dont want to dismantle my phone myself because I might get it worse...
Help please brothers..
I don't know how mechanically inclined you are, but mine did the same thing a few months ago. I ordered a new usb/charge
board off ebay for less than 20 bucks & did it myself. Granted, I've been a repair tech for over 35 years, but there were several
youtube videos that show you screw by screw how to change it. The replacement board also came with a screw driver (torx)
& a plastic pry tool to get the bezel off the device. Took longer to watch the video than it did to replace it.
If you have any mechanical aptitude, give it a go. Being in my mid 50's, with the bifocals, the screws are pretty small, but
I took the torx driver and rubbed it against a magnet to make sure I wouldn't drop any of the screws

Moisture Detected in Charging Port

Recently my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has been saying that there is water or moisture in the charging/USB-C port, when I know that there is no moisture in it. I've seen others complaining of the same thing, but here's the catch...
Since this has started happening, it has been getting worse -- it used to charge fine while the phone was off, but now it still says moisture detected even when the phone is powered off. Also, it has literally melted two of my charging cables. Literally. The phone has become so hot that it burns my fingers and causes blistering. Obviously when this happens I unplug the phone immediately, and when I do, the charging cable is always melted and physically deformed, when it never used to be. I have tried charging cables from many different manufacturers, and the same issue still occurs.
For now it does not seem to be melting any of my charging cables anymore, but it is still not charging due to some form of moisture being detected in the charging port.
I have a warranty through AT&T, but I still have to pay for the repair according to them, so I'm wondering if there is a serious issue with the phone or if there is some kind of workaround.
Thank you.

I did a quick search and sure as ****, the phone is using some form of measuring electrical resistance to detect moisture. Just because its saying moisture doesn't mean that its moisture though, as its not literally a water detector. Given that your phone is producing excessive heat and is melting charging cables, im going to put my life savings on dirt/debris in the charge port causing electrical resistance and triggering the moisture warning.

I haven't charged it since -- I've stowed it away in a cool place and haven't touched it since trying multiple cables and getting the same result. I figured it'd be best to leave it alone until I figure out what the cause may be.
Call At&t and get an estimate for charge port replacement, and then do the same for a local repair shop, decide which is the better option.

I think I will do this and find out what AT&T wants to charge me. If it's not within my budget, I'll look into it and do it myself before I would trust any of the local repair shops here.
Anyway, thanks for your help, and I'll take all of this into consideration. It is greatly appreciated.
My brother is having similar problem. So he is intelligently using wireless charging exclusively. He wants to continue that untill he figures out the solution
Same thing happened to my wife's S9. Kept saying moisture was detected in charging port. She had to use the wireless charger until I found a simple solution.
The reason was that the port had minute dust in it. I first cut a small piece of stiff plastic to a point (like a toothpick), then gently scraped around in the port to loosen up any larger bits of dust/dirt, then blew through a straw in short spurts (you could also invest in a can of compressed air too for camera lenses). Problem went away.

I got a ton of clay in my charging port. I never got the moisture detection popup but I wasn't even able to get the charger in the port.
You can also use pure 99% isopropyl alcohol to Clea. Out ports. Justbe sure that the pho e is off, and be sure to evacuate any alcohol in the ports immediately after applying them to the port to prevent the alcohol from seeping in the phone. Reason being you can ruin the water seal rating, but with a sharp objects you run the risk of damaging the port itself.
You can just let the phone with for 5 minutes or use a blow dryer to evaporate the remaining isopropyl away.

Thanks, but if you're careful with the scraping, as I am, no damage is done.
Also, even salt water can damage the seals, so I'm not too keen on introducing any chemical into the port. But I guess whatever works, works.
If your port is clean and you're still getting the moisture message, please change your charge cable. The moisture detected feature works by two specific pins being grounded out, both in your charge port and the plug on the connector; which could cause inefficient charging to occur. Think connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect, like the older devices used to do until the battery would eventually overheat and...explode.
By the way, those contact thermals are indeed metal, so eventually salt water will rust it's way into your phone.
Mine started to complain about moisture in the USB port about 2 weeks ago, it was raining for an hour but the phone was never exposed to direct rain water.
I left it alone for about 30 mins and the alert went away. So far so good. Later I discovered that even though I was using the original Fast charger, it will fast charge for 2 seconds then switch to normal charging.
That went on for about a week until on Monday it decided that it wont detect the USB charger any more. Not even normal charging. So I took it to a Samsung reseller, they confirmed it hasnt been in touch with water through the SIM tray, confirmed it's a defective USB port and sent it to Samsung Italia for repair.

Note 9 wont turn on after rear glass removal.

I cracked my screen a while ago and just got the time to do the install, but as some of you may know the adhesive holding this turd together is very tough. After blasting with a hair dryer and buying an automotive suction cup I finally got the glass off but it cracked too bad to be reused. I cant do anything with the device now. I've held all buttons for a restart but the broken pixels light up for a split second and then it vibrates for a quick second. as i continue to hold it runs through that process over and over. Even plugging it in to the wall I cant even get a charge light. The only cause i could think of is too much heat. i replaced the screen on a note 5 with no issues. It just makes no sense that it doesn't do anything from peeling the rear glass off. Unfortunately I'm at the parents house where I'm the only android user so i cant plug into a PC as i have the 2 sided typeC cable.
Any Ideas?? As I'm Stumped. And to top it off my spare phone an unlocked Pixel 2 is having the No Sim issue.... Fun times.... It just finished the factory reset and still wont detect my Verizon SIM or ATT. So that's cool, haha.
Thanks for the help. Much appreciate2

Stupid question did you reconnect the fingerprint sensor back in? It might need that to be connected to work.
Recheck all the connections again and ribbon cables for any damage maybe it got loose or heat damaged or cut.

Yes its been plugged in and the only thing i damaged was the foam on top of the lock button but its barely peeled back. no visible damage to the cable its self. and with the back cover the only part i took off the only exposed cable is really the fingerprint scanner. The scanner does though have some visible heat damage. there's little spots on it that wasn't there before. I think that's the cause of the problem.
could it be possible that i overheated the battery and now the device is in some kind of protection mode? the device could be thinking that it could catch fire or something? I know that Li-on batteries are pretty fragile to temperature.
Thanks for the help

If you have a multimeter you can check the battery voltage. If you have voltage then it should be okay but maybe the life of it won't be as long as before. Does the phone charge when you plug it in?
The fingerprint sensor might be the problem. I would replace it as with the battery as well.
Best bet have a Samsung service center look at it, it might be something else.
Good luck with it hope you get it figured out!

good thinking on throwing a meter on it. will do that when i get home. it doesn't charge or do anything when plugging into a computer or the wall. any idea what the voltage should be on the battery? is there anywhere i can get values like that for different components of the device? thanks

Battery specs should be 4000 mah, 15.4 Wh and 3.85 V.
Even though it will show voltage it might not have enough amperage to run. So might check for amperage as well.
Might want to hook up a light circuit to the battery and place the meter in between the + battery to + side of light (meaning the same line) to measure amps.
If it doesn't charge from the wall might as well replace the battery.
If that doesn't work most likely a dead phone (motherboard).
For any voltage values for the motherboard, sorry no idea if you can find that info.
You've been quite the help Blue. Thank you so much. Will be home tmrw and will check on the device. I'll be sure to come back with findings to return the favor. Thanks again! Hope you had a good holiday and Happy New Year!

Screen replacement after water damage?

So... teardown videos on YouTube fooled me and I thought that this phone is water-resistant. I washed it under tap water (multiple times, actually). After the last time, the screen stopped working, but the phone appears to be OK — even the touch clearly works. I've already disassembled the phone and cleaned the connectors with 95% alcohol, but the screen still doesn't work. Is buying a replacement screen and hoping for a cheap repair the smartest thing to do? After all, the motherboard can also be borked.
EDIT: the screen is completely black

I've replaced the screen after dropping the phone. Was only a small chip in the bottom corner, didn't look much at all, but the screen was completely dead. I was in a similar dilemma of wanting to be sure it was only the screen before spending about $100 on a screen. I booted into fastboot, then connected to a PC, then done the fastboot devices command, which returned a valid ID, so I knew the phone wasn't completely dead. Also connecting to the PC and booting the phone, the PC recognised the phone was connected, though without being able to unlock the phone I couldn't check anything else. That was enough for me to go ahead and order the screen. Now everything works fine.

Thanks for sharing your experience! In my case, the phone clearly isn't dead, but I wonder whether some circuitry on the motherboard that's responsible for making the display work might be fried. Well... if that's the case, I can always sell the replacement screen after testing, but I'm not sure that someone will buy it for a good price.
Also... where did you get your screen from? On AliExpress, they are as cheap as $50, but most of the cheap ones are clearly some fake crap — TFT/IPS LCD, smaller than the original, fingerprint scanner not working... I guess I need to buy something more expensive. Have you noticed any difference between the original screen and your replacement?

It was 4 months ago I got mine from AliExpress, at that time there wasn't any of these cheaper ones for sale. Looking at these cheaper ones they are TFT, though it's not always obvious in the description.
One seller is selling both TFT and OLED and are clearly labelled in the options. So from this assume that all cheaper ones are TFT.
It is a bit of a minefield. I doubt that any of the sellers have the actual original genuine screens. It took me a couple of days to go through all the listings and determine which one would most likely be good quality.
I eventually went for this one, which was slightly more expensive than most. Now though it appears to have gone up about $15 from when I bought it.
https://a.aliexpress.com/_d7OqLlE
At that time it had the best reviews, which appeared genuine. There were others with a higher review count, which appeared to be just as well reviewed, but reading the reviews you realise they are fake. Many reviews, supposedly from the USA, written in very poor pigeon English.
Also saw some stores with high review count, but then realised that most reviews are for completely different products (a common trick by some Ali sellers, completely change an existing listing so a new product looks like it's got high reviews)
The screen is good quality. It took about 3 weeks to arrive, but it was about 2 weeks after I damaged it before I ordered. So it was around 5 weeks after I last used the phone before installing it. After that time it's hard to judge if it is as good as the original. To look at and use the phone you wouldn't think it was a non original replacement, to me it seems to be as good as the original, without doing a side by side comparison. As far as an oleophobic coating, I couldn't say, it's had a screen protector since installing.

Umm. What? Even with IP rated phones you don't wash it with water. IP rating generally means that its good for accidental drops into water or for use in light rain. Why on earth would you wash it? Yes, I know jerryrig says there's some water ingress protection but it doesn't mean you should wash it with water. It just means you're good for use in light rain at best.

Well, I guess that even if it's a bit worse, replacing the screen is better (in my case) than dealing with an older/cheaper phone or throwing a nice sum of money on a phone in similar price range. I will report my experience after replacing the screen, maybe it will help someone. I'm definitely not going to find another guy with 9T (Pro) because of the coronavirus, but comparison with another high-quality AMOLED phone is another way to check the quality.
So... I wanted to order the screen, but when I checked whether the phone still works... it appeared dead. It charges, is visible in USB devices (but no fastboot etc.), the notification LED blinks, but that's all. It worked perfectly some time after the water damage occured, so I guess that the damage progressed. Yes, I didn't clean the phone thoroughly after disassembling it - I thought that the water probably evaporated anyway after using a heat gun, so, as I mentioned earlier, I cleaned only (easily accessible) connectors. Maybe it is something stupid (power button?), but it seems too good to be true. If I don't post another update, just assume that my phone died.

My k20 pro Disable screen problem
Hi xda developers
After wetting the phone with a hand sanitizer and using the same wetness of the screen, I played the online game and put it in automatic game mode and rested for a while...
After waking up, I noticed that the phone was turned off, which was turned on by holding down the power button, but the screen is off...
Currently, only vibrators and notification lights work for the phone, and the phone is organized by a computer.
Also, the phone is charged and its sound can be heard while connecting it to the charger, and its sound can be heard in the same way to lock the screen.
Does anyone have an idea?
my phone just take s swim in the river yesterday, now its has no display but still on and even the touchscreen is working (i know is working cuz its register sound when i try to touch it everywhere). it have been dead first but then turn back on with everything work normal. but after about half hour, the screen suddnly dead.
after tear it my self i found where the water coming in, its from the 3.5mm jack. other holes have rubber protection but the jack has nothing. they even put water dammage indicator below the 3.5mm module....
i have try few method like clean the board with isoprofil alcohol but no avail. now im waiting my screeen replacement and will try to fixit my self.

Hello! Had exactly the same issue. Did it work to replace the screen?
My phone got into the sea (well the sea went into it), nothing happened for a while, and then it suddenly went black. Is working (like i can still use it as alarm lol) but the screen is not. Same as BlueOner, i'm afraid is not the screen itself but something in the mother board, so I would love to know if any of you were able to use it after replacing the screen or i will end up with the same issue.
Thanks!

It's toast. Don't even bother. The sea salt is hygroscopic, conductive (with moisture), corrosive and -everywhere- now.
It not a question of if it will fail only when.
Tap water is similar but not near as aggressive. The smallest amount of salt (sweat) can change that if it gets inside too. Even so if the device >didn't have it's battery pulled immediately<, then completely turn apart and cleaned with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol it won't fare much better in the long term most likely.
Any water internally can cause massive damage quickly. Or the signs of damage can take months to fully manifest themselves especially if the battery wasn't quickly pulled.
Salt water is fatal because it's residue doesn't easily rinse off as well as what was stated above.
This is why manufacturer warranties refuse to deal with water damage.
It's the gift that keeps giving...
Occasionally you can get lucky if you act fast
My Buds case fell into my coffee cup and immediately crash dived to the bottom like the sub in Das Boot. Cream and sugar too.
I pulled it apart and rinsed it will RO water then with anhydrous isopropyl alcohol in less then 3 minutes. Got as much as the isopropyl out as possible without compressed air and allowed it to dry in a warm sunny spot. Couldn't disconnect the Li battery as it was soldered or spot welded in. After about 2 days of drying it worked and other a year and a half later still is working.
I am still surprised...
Hi. I got water damage. The screen can be turn on but its not responding at all. I can press the power button, the screen lights up, as normal. I just couldn't unlocked it. It wont accept any touch. Also i tried calling from another phone, sound okay, also led notification working.
I havent try the charging port yet.
Anybody have similar experience? Can someone explain my problem? Should i order new screen replacement? Im just afraid its not screen problem.

Read my previous post.
You need to dry it out completely.

Question Mark and blinking during charging

Hi everyone here, I hope everyone has a good day today. I've got my phone has been dead for quite a while now, the reason is it has the question mark during charging and I can't turn it off. At the first I thought it was the battery problem, I tried open it myself and replaced it with a new battery, however it got worse and it showed question mark battery and the question mark started blinking.
I haven't done checking to the repair shop due to busy with work. What do you guys think about the problem (might be the battery or one of the connector to the battery(?) and how much does it cost to fix it? Thanks in advance
Has it been exposed to moisture?
Is the charging port clean?
Is the battery degraded (less than 80% of its original capacity)?
Is there any swelling, case or display bulging?
If so replace battery asap.
Otherwise, this is a serious problem. Use known good brick and cable. See if that resolves it.
The next step is to replace the battery and check all connections. If that fails replace charging port PCB and/or jack (if it has a replaceable one). If all that fails... mobo failure
Well at the first, I dropped it, then the battery stuck at 50%, then I pressed the back area but still the same, however this phone is already out of warranty so I replaced the battery by myself.

If not the battery or loose connector... something was damaged in the drop. Always use a good case to prevent high G loading damage.
Hey! That means the phone isn't detecting the battery. As I saw you made a repair and you have an XL model, check the flex cable itself, especially where it folds, as it's very sensible and you could have bent it too much, breaking the cable.
I say that because I actually did that mistake, the cable doesn't usually come bent, so you need to bend it so it can fit, and when I did that I actually break it.
Hope this helps you!

I checked the flexible and it seems to be normal to me. I would not mind to buy another battery of it's the case. Thank you! Where did you buy the battery from?

It's very hard to see using just the eye. Maybe if you have other phone try to zoom into the cable to check.
I usually buy this things from ebay. Just check it's a great seller and that the price isn't very cheap neither very expensive.
