Hi Guys,
z3 compact running carbonrom 9.
I have a problem with the sound getting quiet.
I've noticed it most using google maps, when directions are given, they start loud and clear, but by the time the direction is finished i can barely hear it.
I've looked everywhere for a volume normalization setting or loudness control but I can't find anything.
I don't seem to notice when im watching youtube. I'm not sure if its the phone, google maps or some other google setting somewhere.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
YouTube and Spotify is also affected, just did some more checking
factory reset didnt fix it, trying a complete clean flash now
complete clean flash, it's still happening, ill ask on the carbon rom thread.
It's a bug in carbon rom went back a version and it's fixed

I have a rooted Verizon HTC One that I recently just got. Love the phone but one morning I discover that my volume level on literally everything is extremely low. The headphone jack will produce only a whisper of noise and when i turn the volume all the way up I can hear the music distort as if it was extremely loud but its barely even able to hear. The front speakers of the phone refuse to work with system sounds and media sounds and all the sliders are up. I've tried this on multiple ROMS, Liquid, Cyanogen, and on multiple updates, JB, KK, etc. and nothing seems to fix the issue. The speaker works I know for a fact because I can make and recieve phone calls but its a great deal quieter than before. But as for the ringer and notification sounds, or any kind of media nothing comes out of the front speakers. I'm at a complete loss. All volume+ apps don't do a damn thing in helping and I've ravaged Google looking for a solution and can't find any. It may help to know that the bottom speaker would cut out every once in a while the last week before this happened. It also stopped working on a KK ROM. if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate. I'm just about to give up.

Try to reset to 100% stock. If it doesnt work then its probably an hardware issue.
Yesterday I was listening to a podcast through my M7's speakers and the audio cut off suddenly - as if I had tapped "Pause". Since then I have been unable to get any audio out of the phone speakers. Bluetooth audio seems fine. At first I thought that headset-jack audio was gone, but now it is just very low volume (maybe it was low all along, or maybe it was gone at first and is now working but quiet after a few Nandroid restores).
Here are the things I have tried:
Calling the phone to get ringtone
- (vibrates but no ring)
Restarting
- (no change)
Restoring Nandroid backups from 2 weeks and 2 months ago, with same ROM
- (no change)
Restoring Nandroid from over a year ago, before I had installed any custom ROM:
-Touchscreen doesn't work so can't use the phone (?!?)
-Speakers still seem broken - receiving call causes vibrate but no ringtone
-Had to ADB into the phone to reboot to recovery
Current ROM: CRDroid/CM11
I can't even guess at what would have caused this - I was doing nothing unusual or stressful with the phone. It was sitting on a table playing the podcast & the sound just stopped - pretty sure there was no "Pop" or other sound. As far as I know both speakers were working fine before yesterday, but since I mostly listen to spoken word I guess it's possible that I haven't noticed one of them being out.
Oh yeah, I found and tried dialing the phone diagnostic code (something like *#*#3424*#*#) but it did not work - I'm guessing it just isn't supported in the CrDroid ROM.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Is there anything I can do to test or determine whether this is a software or hardware problem? It seems bizarre that both speakers would just stop working, but what do I know?
thanks in advance for any assistance...

Thanks for the reply - I forgot to mention that I had seen that suggestion and have already confirmed that my Chrome is already updated to version 40.0.2214.109, so I don't think that's it, but if there's any way it could still be the problem, let me know - I guess I could uninstall/reinstall chrome but I don't have any reason to think that would help.
I'm now getting *some* audio under peculiar circumstances, so clearly both speakers are not completely dead or disconnected, and possibly it's software rather than hardware - I'll test a little more before posting the details...

As hinted in that last post, I'm now seeing/hearing some very bizarre behavior - I can now get audio out of certain apps under certain conditions, I think only out of the top speaker. Here are the convoluted conditions:
(This is the only reliable thing that happens) If I play a voicemail message in the "Youmail" app, it works (although only out of the top speaker).
*AFTER* I play a message in Youmail, I can get a video on Facebook or VLC or a song in Google Music to produce audio, BUT if I pause the Facebook video and restart it the audio is gone again, and none of the other apps will produce audio again UNTIL I go back to Youmail and play another few seconds of a message. Pausing/restarting VLC does not kill the audio. Rebooting the phone also leaves me in a non-audio state, UNTIL I open Youmail and play a few seconds. "Smart Audiobook Player" cannot produce audio under any circumstance, and I cannot get the phone to ring. I haven't played with other apps yet.
What the??
I've been thinking about flashing a new ROM anyway, but I'm skeptical that that will do any good since my attempted Nandroid restores haven't helped.
Any ideas?
(of course let me know if you need more info to try to diagnose or if there's some other hoop I could jump through to try to see what's happening)
[edit a few minutes later] I can get music to play in Mediamonkey, but as with the Facebook video, if I pause and restart the audio is gone again and other apps (except Youmail) do not produce audio.
I went ahead and flashed a new ROM ("MaximusHD | 52.0.0 | Android 5.0.2 | Sense 6.0") but that did not fix the problem.
I can now run the HTC Fuction Test Program, and that results in some top-speaker audio tones on the first audio test, but no ringing or other audio. I haven't restored the Youmail app to see if I can get the same weird behavior I had before.
So it is still clearly true that I can get very limited audio out of the top speaker but generally audio is dead.
Any suggestions of what to try next?

Arrgghhh - I'm afraid you're right but I really want you not to be. Any other ideas/solutions?
To be more clear, now when I run the "HTC Function Test" and select "Audio Test", the first test it runs ("Receiver Test") seems to work - it plays several distinct tones followed by an ascending sliding tone (out of the top speaker only). Then it runs "Test Both Speakers", which fails completely (no audio whatsoever).
Hello All,
I have an issue with Nexus 6 after the recent update of 6.0.1. Through eaphones the sound is very low and it is plain. No bass, could not hear clearly. Maximized the sound and cannot hear properly.
I have tried logging in safe mode and nothing worked. I have also updated the music apps/video apps to the latest version, still no luck.
Music and Video apps which used are as follows:
1. Google Play Music
2. Blackplayer
3. MX Player
4. VLC
5. Youtube
Seems no dust inside the audio jack, still it isn't working. Also, I am sure that I did not drop my phone down.
Could someone help me out with this issue? Has anyone had a similar experience?
Regards,
Try going back to 6..0.0
If its really software related, it will be good to know.
I just got a new Bluetooth headset and noticed turning on the equalizer in play music lowered the volume and sliding the bass higher resulted in even more of a muted sound. It sounds a lot better with the equalizer off. Just a thought in case you have it enabled.

I didnt notice a difference with my earphones however it had low sound with my headphones before 6.0.1 and with 6.0.1.
RE:
Thanks you all for your valuable responses.
seems there is no issue with the Android Version. Many of them stated, it works with latest android version.
I suspect its a hardware issue. I have tried a factory reset, Hard Reset also cleared cache data but no luck. I did not go for flashing the latest OS.
Submitted the device to the authorized Moto Service station, awaiting reply from them. They said there are chances, there could be an issue with the audio jack.
Any suggestions ?
Hey guys, I'm looking for some help with my Moto X's microphone. It works great for most functions like phone calls, video recordings, sound recorder apps, etc, but won't work for Google speech recognition. Anytime I want to do a Google voice search, compose a text message via speech, or use a keyboard's speech to text button, I have to get VERY close to the rear mic to make anything happen. When I go to https://history.google.com/history/audio my searches are incredibly quiet. Even with my pc at full volume, my searches sound like a whisper.
I've been using two ROMs, OctOS-M and AICP 11. Both have had this issue despite multiple clean installs and trying different versions.
Does anyone have an idea what's happening here? Why is Google hearing my mic so quietly? I miss my voice actions! :crying:
I experienced similar behavior on custom firmware when using opengapps. Switching to banks gapps fixed the issue for me.
hope this helps
-Cyril
Awesome! I'll try this tonight and post my results. Thanks for the suggestion.
Okay so I dirty flashed banks dynamic gapps 6/7/16, the system booted and configured the apps, but the result didn't change at all. Next I factory reset, installed AICP, then installed banks gapps. Still the same issue
Very strange! So I restored to a stock 5.1 nandroid backup and the mic is working perfectly. Maybe my phone doesn't like MM for some reason? I really don't understand what's happening xD
If anyone has ideas, let me know!
Started having an issue with my N6 this week when the media volume disappeared. Alarms and ringtones still worked as they should but music and videos were not putting out any sound, no media volume at all even though it was maxed out in volume controls. Thought perhaps I messed something up installing the newest PureNexus build so tried reinstalling to no avail. Searched around a few forums and saw that this has been an issue for some people going back as much as a couple years. This thread on XDA helped fix my particular problem: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/nexus-6-sound-t3021881/page2
From the OP of that thread:

OK, so it turns out mine is to do with the headphone jack, maybe the software is buggy? But if I plug it in and take it out the sound comes back. The port is clean, so unsure why it is doing it? Oddly I have discovered that while it is having its issue with the sound, the google now voice keeps popping up as if I have said "ok google" (which is turned off?)
Hasn't done it for a while now though, will see if 5.1 cures any of the problems.

This fixed my device though I've seen in other forums that this fix doesn't work for everyone.
My question: is anyone familiar with this problem and know whether it's a hardware or software issue?
