Fingerprint position indicator - Xiaomi Mi 9 Questions & Answers

Hi guys .. good evening .. for a while .. I noticed that the indicator of the position of the imprint .. ie the symbol of the imprint, which appears, as soon as you move or touch the device indicating where to put your finger to unlock, is less bright sometimes .. it seems weakened the image, so much so that some times I find it hard to see it especially outdoors, others you can see normally .. someone has found a similar problem ?? Mi9 EEA stable 10.2.30 and this before updating he did it already .. despite having made a restoration time ago, after a while he returns like this ..

Brother, imma be honest with you. It just becomes muscle memory. If you really want to see the icon for the fingerprint sensor, you may want to consider flashing a custom rom. Xiaomi.eu is my definite daily driver! Plus, it's debloated, overclocked the GPU to 830mhz instead of 700, and I overclocked the screen to 84hz. It is a blast because I get better battery life, better performance, better RAM management, and I have the icon for the fingerprint sensor just in case.

Camera lag, Is there a fix?

Hello,
I own a MDA Vario III, And when I preview what I want to put on a photo, it really lags(like 3 fps). Is there something what would fix it? I have been searching whole internet and found a topic about some rumored Graphic's driver. and a update from HTC, But couldn't find it. Sorry if I didn't saw something. Please give me a link to it.
BTW: sometimes it doesn't lag, and sometimes it does :S
I really apreciate this =]
-Armazia
Hey Armazia, the camera lags only when under low light conditions, the FPS is very bad at this point cos of the lighting conditions, however under better conditions the FPS dramatically increases because of better lighting conditions. There isnt a permanent fix to this because the actual camera component is causing it, drivers and things wnt work, htc jus put a crappy camera in, you cant really do much about that. Saying that i know of atleast one way to get better FPS while under low light.
1. On the phone activate the camera
2. Now on the phone activate the camera
3. Cover the lens with ure hands.
4.while keeping the lens covered put the phone into sleep mode(by pressing the power button on the top right handside of the phone.
5. Make sure you dont have S2U2 slider thingy intalled and running.
6. Now press the power button again to wake the phone up making sure you are still covering the lens with your palm.
7. Now remove your palm, there should be better FPS, you might have to do it until you can actually get it to work, you have to this a few times to get used to it.
Hope That Help!

I knew that fix yes, But when I press power button while in camera, and then power on. The camera closes and im on the today screen again. viewing memory doesn't show camera. So my phone closes the program after power off.
Hmm thats weird, there must be a setting somewhere on the phone which can disable that. I use that mothod on my HTC TyTN II and it works most of the time, what rom are you running?
Im running rom version 1.56.144.4. Should I update? I dont really want to, because I dont wanna screw up my phone
Ive had my kaiser for a few weeks now and i knew abt this site before from my old phone(HTC TyTN), so ive used and flashed quite a few roms now and it hasnt had any negative effects on the phone from the custom roms, as long as u read the guides in the stickies everything should be fine. so yeah in my opinion id upgrade it. but its up2 u nyways.

GPS remarkable observation

Guys,
I spent 2 weeks of holidays (my wife almost left me for that) mostly trying to find out why GPS performance on my P970 is so poor, losing satellites fixes every so often and sometimes no fix at all although 'seeing' satellites. I did not find a 'real' solution, even after tests on both mostly Huexxx 7 and lately boype's 0909, too.
Best results now on boype's 0909 CM7 but with adapted gps.conf and gps_brcm_conf.xml. Nevertheless, the result is still disappointing, far away from satisfying.
However, during all these checks, I found that satellite's receiption is depending on the way I hold the device in my hands, at least on MY device. Whenever I hold a finger on the top left of the chassis (just above the location where the GPS chip is located, see pictures), then receiption improves by 0 up to 14 db (!!!).
Also the number of 'seen' and 'used' birds increases from 6 to 10 easily!!! However, the fix did not become more stable through that.
Pls check on your devices if you can verify the same behaviour.
If so, what could be the reason (i do not put any pressure on the device)? And is there anything that we can do to make this improvement permanent, i.e. put a piece of 'aluminium foil' between the back lid and the device or something similiar?
Let me know your remarks, guys.
No problem at all. Riding on the tram right now. Fix on 12 in few seconds. Sure it's not because of your position? And 6 is enough to fix the position.
@eighty-four
I appreciate your info, and you are surely right it is depending on my position. My question was a different one though: Do you observe the same reaction as soon as you put the finger on top of the device; i.e. increase of signal strength?
BTW You attached an impressive picture, would like to aks you are you still on AOKP beta 1.1 ICS 4.0.4 and how do your files gps.conf and gps_brcm_conf.xml look like? Can you share them?
AOKP 1.1, no any GPS fixes
Hard to say about reaction while on move. But didn't noticed any noticeable changes.
Can't check now - I'm in home.
I've been using Marvel v9 since released, with the GPS "Tweaks" installed too.
I'm getting GPS signal, sometimes really fast, some others i need to wait for a couple of minutes (maximum 3 minutes).
There are certain times though, that it doesnt lock no matter what, just like in your situation. It manages to find many sattelites (7+) with an average decent signal strength but it refuses to get a gps fix location.
I believe it has to do with the temperature of the chip (i couldnt get easy GPS fix at winter) because now that summer passed by and used my GPS a lot, i had no issues... might be the clouds, might be the stars alignment and zodiacs ... i really dont know.
It's not that accurate and fast though for city driving. Some turns are being announced way too late (Sygic Aura) and the error treshold is about 10meters mostly, rarely goes down at 5meters.
I guess it's a chip manufacturing bull**** rather than a "case construction" or antenna problem.
@morx
I just wanted to check if others can verify better receiption when holding finger on top.
I agree it seems a hw or engineering defect, nevertheless I am trying to optimize the settings in order to compaensate at least partially.
Interesting you mention the temperature: In my research I came across a relationship between temperature and gps accuracy. Our (and any other gps chip) uses a oscillator hw module for precision timing. These oscillators' accuracies depend on the temperature and are measuered in PPM. There is also a setting in the gps_brcm_conf.xml that refers to this, it is "FrqPlan". The usual value in CM7 is "FRQ_PLAN_26MHZ_2PPM_26MHZ_300PPB". However, other values do also work, like "FRQ_PLAN_26MHZ_2PPM_26MHZ_100PPB".
You can check details in THIS post.
Would be interesting to determine if different values lead to better results.
I had no clue that chip temperature had a side effect on GPS fix !!
When i was writing my concern about that, i was feeling stupid until i saw your redirection to that post...
hmmm there are many factors which can be put on the table about optimization and troubleshooting.
Later on, i'll give a try keeping the cellphone with both hands, different angles, one handed on top/bottom etc...
Interesting thoughts.
I'm on CM10 nightly and always had blazing fast fixes until yesterday. I activated GPS in my car and after 3 minutes it fixed (in Osmand), after some more minutes the fix got currently lost.
Due to my big custom 3500 mAh battery I couldn't place my phone in the cradle therefore I simply laid it onto my dashboard. Maybe because of this the signals were harder to receive.
I will switch back to the normal battery today and try to test your variant.
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda app-developers app

mi5 diminished parts of previously opened apps remain stuck on screen.

hello to all,
So I've recently noticed this happening on my mi5 32GB variant. Whenever I close an app, after using it for sometime, a diminished part of that app remain even after closing it.
for example, if I use FB app for sometime and when I close it and go to homescreen, near the upper part of the screen I can see the diminished part of the FB app ( the upper part of FB app) even after closing it.
This can be viewed better if I go to recent apps screen. Since it has a greyish background the image can be viewed better. This is more prominent in the upper corners of the screen, but it also visible on the lower corners as well.
This happens when the phone becomes hot after working for sometime. If I leave it locked and idle for sometime, that image fades away and everything becomes normal. But if I start using the phone again for sometime, the problem comes back.
I kind of think this is something wrong with the lcd panel because if I take a screenshot (of the homescreen/recent apps menu when the problem persists) and view it through the PC it looks fine.
I've flashed both lineage OS and xiaomi.eu ROMs and this happens in both of them.
My phone has a LGD panel.
If anyone here has previously encountered this problem or if anybody have any idea about why this is happening and/or whether there are any solutions for this, I would really appreciate your help
I think its called a screen burn issue. Dont have a solution though

right ... I suspected something like this coz it happens only when the phone is hot. I didn't knew the correct term for that ....
thanks for the reply buddy. appreciate it
It's image retention. Which happen quite frequently on ips display made by LG. Many LG's flagship also suffer this symptom. The only way you can reduce it is by reducing the amount of RGB(Red green blue) colour profile by 5-7% though only doable in LOS.

Look under display calibration and change your RGB values accordingly: R: 93% G:93% B93% . It works like a charm :highfive: I use LineageOS although not all ROMs have this feature.

yeah use the LOS 14.1 and adjust the RGB to 90. I suppose it hides the retention effect. To fix the problem completely, I think the only option is the replace the screen.
some people are using KCAL which essentially provides the same options( and more) but keep in mind that it needs root access and kernel modifications.

3 days in and disappointed

So iam now 3 days in with the S10 plus and i have to say that while theres lots i love about it , iam also disappointed. Here are my complaints thus far..... I pray some of these can and will be fixed with a software update.
1 - Camera, Yes its pretty good but i expected more. No better then the S9 imo. Expected a little more from Samsung with regards the camera this year.
2 - Kepad touch issues..... I virtually cannot type on this phone without constantly and accidentally hitting the 'p' key. I do not have chubby hands or anything but whenever i need to reach across to the left side of the keypad , iam forever hitting that 'p' key and it drives me crazy to the point where i may return the phone.
3 - No notification LED - This wouldnt be a deal breaker if Edge lighting worked properly but Edge lighting is pretty damn poor lets be honest. Works fine for default messaging app but thats about it.
4 - Fingerprint scanner - Was awful initially but improved massively once i removed the pre-installed screen protector and added a second fingerprint using the same finger. However, I still find that it occasionally fails to read my fingerprint. I feel like iam placing my thumb in the right area given that the icon lights up to help me but somehow it still sometimes fails. I would say it works around 80% of the time
5 - Fast Charging - Again i expected more. Its not slow but its not fast either. It takes around 1hr 45 mins to get from 15% - 100%
For me personally i would be happy if they could improve the keypad and fingerprint issue but theres already been updates and not much has changed.
You mention keypad, are you talking about the keyboard? If so just use another keyboard.

You can modify the size of the keyboard for this very reason, move it up or down until you can use it comfortably.
You can also modify the curve display deadzone with goodlock.
I'm also surprised that AOD doesn't fill the void of a notification led.. it certainly does for me.. In saying that I would like to see a notification ring around the camera cutout, I think that would of been a nice touch.
I agree with you on everything you mentioned.
I would add one more thing regarding accidental touches, I am a skinny guy, and so are my hands, but whenever I am reaching to other side of the screen, I find the screen either not responding to my touches or causing accidental touches, what drives me crazy is that I check the palm of my hand and almost always it's not even touching the edge of the screen, it's as if even when your skin is hovering few mm above the edge if the screen the phone will take it as if your actually touching it, if that makes sense.
As for the camera, coming from the Note 9, I am so disappointed with the low light capabilities of this phone, even indoors it's not up to par with other flagships, I even get worse shots than my previous Note 9 and S9. To make matters worse, Samsung didn't include a propper night mode that can compete with Huawei's night mode or the Pixel's night sight.
Sorry for my bad English, I hope I was clear enough in delivering my point. Cheers.

The S10 does have a Multi Colored Notification LED around it's camera cutout. This YouTube video explains how to activate and manage it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/b0p0o6/s10_s10_how_to_enable_led_notification_light/
Try using a light touch on the fingerprint display reader as opposed to a hard press, this is how it's designed to function.
The S10 Camera has a Pro Mode, you can adjust virtual any aspect of photos to your preference.

That notification is from using a 3rd party app and a light touch with the screen protector hasn't worked too well.

I contacted Samsung about the keyboard issue! All they suggest is to leave feedback. If your using the stock keyboard then it can be resized which i guess kinda is a solution but you have to bring it in from both sides to keep it centered and the keyboard then winds up been a tad too small so its not ideal! Its weird because my s9 plus was almost identical in terms of its dimensions yet it did not have this issue.
fingerprint scanner has also been a nightmare today! I could swear iam not doing anything different yet it works sometimes and rejects me other times. Its makin me miss the finger print scanner on the s9. It was so much better. Another small annoyance is how fast my battery goes from 100% to 99% lol
Battery in general is great but i charge it to 100%, Unplug it and seconds later iam at 99% .......... what the fudge ha
I used an iphone xs temporarily recently and i have to say that while it is over priced and in general Samsung is much better and cheaper too. However, Apple does things properly. It worked flawlessly and never gave issue. The Samsung is far better on paper and ticks all the boxes but in day to day use its just not as 'perfect'

Question Wqhd+ vs fhd+ ( huge performance issue ) (exynos)

As soon as i try to shift to wqhd+ with 120 hz , the performance of the phone decreases alot , i see stutters here and there . The phone remains extra warm while using , even the typing isnt as smooth.
But as soon as i switch to fhd+ , omg the phone is really fast again .. no stutters ,
Phone remains very light warm , typing super snooth .
Is there anyone facing the same issue ?
( reminds of my old s9plus with exynos where it was not able to handle wqhd resolution.)
My point is , why do they even offer wqhd when the chipset is weak to handle ?
Is there anyone facing the same thing ?
Fine here , been using wqhd 120hz since first time

Exynos ?
What are your ambient temperatures outside ?
I found WQHD to be smoother. Phone seemed less hesitant (for lack of a better word) in day to day interaction. For example, when set to FHD+, there would be a small delay after unlocking, before the screen starting accepting a touch input. Nothing lagged, but there was this feeling that the CPU/GPU was scaling up an FHD interface onto a WQHD screen (Number of pixels remain the same on the screen, whatever resolution you pick). Once i changed to native WQHD resolution, everything seemed to be instantaneous. It may be consuming more battery, I'm not sure - but i don't see a worse battery life than what it was on FHD+.
During a CODM session I noticed that FHD+ gameplay was smoother than WQHD - so that's probably going to be my use case for FHD+ - Gaming. For everything else, I'll stick to WQHD for sometime and post my experience if I notice any downsides.
What i have noticed is , if you change the resolution from 1440 to 1080 .
The phones data in certain apps still shows that phone is rendering 515 ppi
A restart is must after changing resolution ..
Try to reduce to 1080p , do a reboot , and then use the phone and see if there is a difference ..
Will try today and see if the reboot idea makes a difference over the next 1-2 days

So far, FHD+ seems to be easier on the battery. The touch delay has disappeared after a reboot, so thanks for that suggestion!
Charged nearly a day ago, and did regular usage including half an hour of CODM, WhatsApp, XDA, reddit etc mostly on wifi. Auto dark mode (sunset to sunrise)
With that kind of use case, I'm at 19+ hours since full charge, 4+ hours of screen on time and still have around half the battery left.
I can live with that.

So thats the point .
Qhd is good , but its not easy on cpu/gpu as well as battery .
I am more concerned about the overall general performance , ( not gaming)
Hows the overall performance as of now ?
Like using whatsapp , insta ,facebook , typing , browsing , etc?
Better/smoother than qhd? Or similer ?

Honestly speaking, general performance seems no different between FHD and WQHD. I can't even tell which resolution I'm running unless I go to the resolution setting page.

Yes .. thats true .. its just after changing the setting . You realise that its different .
After like 5 mins of using i barely notice the change in resolution .
I dont know how you are able to achieve that type of battery ..
I might have tinkered with a lot of setting , installed galaxy labs and good lock too .
According to you should i get my phone restored ( software) once from the service centre ?
Or will the factory reset be enough ?

According to you should i get my phone restored ( software) once from the service centre ?
Or will the factory reset be enough ?

I have good lock too, haven't used labs. I like to tinker with my phone as well. But I don't usually make changes outside what the OS allows (I've changed only user facing options, not dug into system disabling apps, or other such activity)
Service center will not do anything more than what you will do at home. If you think you may have messed up too many settings and can't recover from it, just do a factory restore and set up again. But for the first week or so, expect poor battery life as the OS settles down. Coming from a OnePlus, I actually quite like Samsung software. It has a polish that OnePlus lacks, being built purely for Speed. It's quite robust, just make small incremental changes to set up to your liking, battery life will settle down to a comfortable level.
My battery life was terrible when I got the phone a week ago, but has continued to get better with time.

Do you think it could be an issue of bad os ?
Will the restore from service centre make any difference ?

Honestly, I dont know. Only way to find out is to try. But once again, I don't think Service Centre people will do any special software flash that you cannot do with a factory reset at home. If I was you, i'd not give my phone to a stranger unless I couldn't manage or fix something myself first.
BTW, what is your major gripe with your phone? Battery life? SOT? Standby? Performance? What is bugging you so much?

Sot , battery . I could barely manage 5-6 hours sot without gaming .with Aod on fhd 120hz
Using the camera makes the phone heat up alot and after using camera it throttles and even scrolling feels a bit laggy .
Changing to wqhd and rebooting ,
The ui feels less smooth , the response time reduces , apps like snapchat and instagram start stuttering .

That doesn't sound alright. Have you done a lot (i mean a LOT) of tinkering with the OS? If so, something might have gone off the rails and causing problems. Impossible for me to say. But the phone is buttery smooth... I don't think you should accept any lagginess. Most of the heating issues are also gone after the April update, so I'm not sure what has your device spooked. Which country are you from? Can you get an easy replacement or are you stuck with your device like in India? I'm not saying your device is faulty, but if its bugging you and you can get a free replacement without losing money, get it swapped with a new one.
If that's not possible, the easiest way out will be a factory reset at home.
I'd say go for it, wipe and set it up afresh.

Unfortunately i am from india bro .
Bought offline ,
No replacement/return
I know if i submit in the service centre they are gonna destroy my phone ( may be sratches / mishandling or they could open the phone and destroy the waterproofing)
What i am planning is go to service centre and get the phone flashed again . ( i am least sure that it could be a bad os install on my phone )
A factory reset is what i can try at the moment .

Best of luck! Do keep me posted. I really hope you get this sorted out.
This is a very expensive heartache otherwise! I can imagine what you must be going through. Spend the Sunday setting up a freshly reset phone. If you start now, you should be done by night. Damn thing has soooooo many settings to navigate.

While setting up , did u install the samsung apps?
Are u signed in to samsung account?
Yes for both.
But I made sure to uncheck the Samsung Customisation Service during setup. I only ticked the boxes that were compulsory for allowing the setup to proceed.
