vivid or natural? - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

I wonder which setting you using. Do you like vivid or natural more and why?

Natural. I can't give an exact answer, it's just more pleasing to my eyes. LOL, maybe the same reason my background is black, I have no imagination.

Natural for me
Vivid is extra saturated and unreal poping colors

So is the screen THAT bad?

Hello,
As i am today a not very-pleased s3 owner, i decided that i will give Sony a try for the first time. After looking much at especially the V and the Z, i`ve decided that the Z will be the phone i will enough pleased with.
Anyway, i habe been reeding alot about this phone the last days, and i keep reading that the screen is not "good" enough, and that is something that concerns me.
So i am asking YOU GUYS that are a lucky owner of the Xperia Z; How does the screen feel like? Is it relly THAT bad as people is talking about? I really want this phone. I love sonys interface and water+dust proof is a must for me these days.
I hope someone can give me a good answer.
Appreciated !
Honestly go out and check it out for yourself.
Everyone will and can have their own opinion, but in the end it is your choice.
I for one like it

Thanks for responding!
I would love to check it out, but here in Norway we dont get it before 6-10Mars. I went to the store today to check out the display on the Xperia V, and i gotta say i liked it alot more than my Amoled S3.
AW: So is the screen THAT bad?
Screen is just fine. Lots of exageration.
The vieweing angles are sub-premium, this is true, but perfectly ok. First its only the colours which wash out a bit, its not like you wouldnt see anything anymore plus, to be honest, how often and for jow long do you look at your phone flat and sideways...?
I like the screen a lot. Nice colours to look at, insane resolution and pixel density , everything is so damn crisp and clear. I mean hello, its a flaghship after all, they dont dare to put utter bull**** in it. As I said, lots of exaggeration.
TFT with high resolution. Colors are bad.
Regards
Yesterday I tested 3 Xperia Z with bright pixel. But finally got one that has none.

Depends on your definition of good colors.
When looking at photos vs one x without BE turned on colors are pretty close to the real thing including vibrancy and saturation. Now if you are the kind of person that likes unhealthy yellow skin tones, better than real life colors than yeah colors are no good. When people say it looks washed out they actually mean it is not punchy the truth is that when you look at the real world vs s3 and one x the real world seems to be washed out
Stop this BS already... screen is very good.
The only "problem" with it is colour saturation in UI. When BE2 kicks in, and you're on 60%+ brightness, colours and brightness are amazing. And since BE2 doesn't change the screen's physical properties - it means that the screen itself is perfectly fine. The only thing you can be unhappy with is UI's default saturation values, which are quite low, probably to make the difference between media and UI very noticable.
Also, it's true - "washed out" colours are actually a lot closer to natural colours. If you want very saturated colours all the time - you might not be satisfied. If you want completely oversaturated colours - go for AMOLED, they're amazing in producing rich, highly saturated colours.
For me, coming straight from an S3 to this, it really does look washed out, no mater how you look at it.
However, I think that this is because the S3 had very over saturated colours. If you do decide to go for the XZ, you'll be disappointed at first, but it feels much more premium and you'll start to realise that the S3 seemed like it was in Shop Display Mode all the time!
Ultimately, the choice is yours, but don't be downhearted if you go for it and you're initially unhappy with the screen.
EDIT:
Which is basically what everyone else has already said here.
Maybe Sony should have added a samsung mode where it sets the saturation up to 120%, the contrast to .800 and maximum brightness to 50% so you can't see anything when outdoors.
I think you'll be happy with the screen if you upgraded from other xperia family phones. But if you will compare it side by side with other 1080 LCD phones like htc butterfly, hell even with HTC One X which has 720P and a year older, Z can't match overall display quality. Trust your eyes. To see is to believe.

All Sony screens are very good from my past experience, people are just used to over saturated colors that other companies do to their phones. Also, you eyes will strain much less when you look at Sony screens for extended period of times.
Also, I don't understand what's with the ruckus of angle viewing, seriously, how many of you out there actively view the screen from a angle? its just retarded to compare that, it's not even a point.

I personally really like the screen. I hated the screen on the s3 and thought the colours looked unnatural and oversaturated. With the XZ, while it may be 'washed out' to some, I actually find the colours, contrast, etc. quite nice to look at and natural. The s3 and the like hurt my eyes. Plus viewing angles aren't half as bad as I expected them to be given all the hysteria regarding them prior to release.
I posted this in the other thread "clearing up the....."
"I have now spent 48 hours with my XZ in the UK. I really like the display. It is sharp, vibrant and realistic in terms of colour and saturation. I could not get on with the amoled display of the HTC desire and the samsung galaxy. Too unrealistic imho. The bravia engine takes it to another level for movies and pictures: It will impress your friends!
I was hesitating with the iminent release of the HTC one. I have absolutley no regrets. It is a beautiful phone and a beautiful display."
well if the only downside is "bad view angles" and "low sturation" its great display because
1. i look my fone from front not side
2. i dont like too saturated colours (red must be red not burning red example)
3. resolution n ppi is high enough to make clear and nice pic
here is some screen comparisons

Favorite Display Mode?

Which Display mode do you like better on this device?
Adaptive? AMOLED Cinema? AMOLED photo? or Basic?
I like AMOLED Photo. Colors look more real.
I like basic actually. Adaptive color is a little harsh for my tastes, especially reds. Basic tones things down a bit and looks really nice when screen is bright. A little washed out when brightness is low though. And whites are better on adaptive.

Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the LG Nexus 5X's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Colors are a bit dull
Colours pop more more than the N5 and they seem fairly accurate.
Fairly accurate but a bit warm. Some people might like it though, I prefer a sharp white but it's good on the eye anyway.
Good color representation and enough color punch
I am satisfied with the color saturation and accuracy. I wouldn't want the color to be more saturated compared to amoled screen. The screen on my 5X is relaxing, there is no pressure/strain to the eyes(auto brightness is on) it just feels right!
According to Anandtech the colors and white point are spot on as far accuracy goes...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9742/the-google-nexus-5x-review/2
Years of over saturated colors and much too blue white points have conditioned us to think that displays should look like that
Colors seem accurate, EXCEPT for when viewing videos. Colors seem extremely muted when in a video, for instance in youtube, you might see a screenshot of a video when choosing what video to watch, but if you click it and get to the same scene, the colors will be muted in video.

I'm seeing similar behaviour. Gamma looks out of whack in youtube. Blacks are totally washed out. Everything looks overexposed. Not sure if it's a software/driver issue. The display looks great otherwise. Need to try out some other video apps (kodi, mxplayer etc.) to confirm.
Edit: It is indeed a software issue. It's the difference between 16-235 vs 0-255. See this thread for more details https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3r9ftg/defective_6p_screen_vs_normal/
Also: https://productforums.google.com/fo...J0aLRo/YIFmN5jXAQAJ;context-place=forum/nexus
The youtube test fails on my n5x, but not on my n5
I'm pretty happy with it. Improved compared to the Nexus 5(which was good too). Some owners have reported a very warm/yellowish screen but luckily I'm not having that issue. I rated it a 4/5 for saturation and accuracy which is as good as possible for a LCD.
EDIT: So I just did a side by side comparison between my Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X. Side by side the Nexus 5X is noticeably warmer but it's not overly warm and honestly, coming from someone who prefers displays on the cooler side because they look more life like, I actually would give the slight edge to the Nexus 5X. But like I said that is only side by side. With each phone on its own I can't really tell either one being too warm or too cool. As far as saturation goes the Nexus 5X is better. The colors on the Nexus 5 were noticeably more washed out compared to the Nexus 5X(although not that bad). I really see it in the red of the Chrome icon, the green of the Hangouts icon and the blue of the Facebook icon. It's still not AMOLED colors but closer than the Nexus 5.

Does anyone know if any of the custom ROMs fix this issue? I don't see it mentioned as a feature in any of the first posts of the ROMs posted in this forum...

No, but this is a kernel bug. Someone identified the commit in the reddit thread. So you wouldn't even need an entire ROM for a fix. A kernel fix should do it. I don't have enough posts to post in the kernel forums, but you should post in the elementalx kernel thread. The dev seems to be active in developing kernels for all the nexus phones.

Nexus 5 has a white point of just over 7000k, the 5X is almost bang on 6500k.
Like many have said, we are just used to seeing "cooler" colours in our phones. Nexus 5X is really accurate as far as colours go.

That is true though some 5x are arriving with extreme yellow tints which make them look like 5000k or even warmer. Anyone who gets one of these would be 100% correct in saying the device is too yellow, unfortunately since most people are so used to cold blue screens they might not even be able to tell which they received as compared to their old device even a proper 5x panel will probably look warm.
For example this was a replacement 5x device I received on the right which went straight back to Google.

Im fairly certain its addressed by kernels not roms... Personally i use Flar2's elemental kernel and have since the Original N5. With his app (which im happy to support) you have full colour controls including gamma. Which you can flash over stock or custom rom depending on your preference his kernel is in the Original Development section.
Nice colours
My last phone (lg g2) was ruining my eyes. Too cool blue with strong contrast. Overtime a screen with false colors and contrast can ruin your vision - making the real world seem dull.
The Nexus 5X is correct and easier on the eyes.
Well, it seems to me that default color is pumped, like vivid, almost neonic a bit and warm. Which is good I guess for the phone. Im not planning to do any color balancing and adjustments on my phone, I would use the PC for that kind of work of course.
Unbelievable nice!

sRGB Mode [Opinions]

So with the new update sRGB mode was enabled and I personally dont find it good, it has too much yellowish tint. I mean how does this make the screen better in any way. The colors might seem accurate but the yellow tint is too hard to ignore. Went back to previous mode. How about you guys
No yellow tint on my display. sRGB seems pretty natural to me, I absolutely prefer it over the standard mode.
Same with 6P of 5X, that's neutral color, your eyes are familiar with vivid-tuned display tone, just like me lol
Your eyes are just used to a brighter more colourful display so it looks worse. it does show of a yellower tint but I'm gonna use it for a while see if I get used to it.
Tbh the mode is for Colourophile's and i'm happy with the normal one
I don't know what you expected. They told you neutral colors when you're used to super saturated colors.
Loving the sRGB personally.
Same, sRBG represent a more natural color spectrum. The "yellow" tint is actually a proper (as close as they could calibrate) representation of true white. Too many oversaturated screens on the market are being accepted as "true" color representation.
Personally I don't like it, too. First I was really excited about it. When i tried it everything doesn't look as shiny as before. All the colors looked like they are washed-out.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using XDA Labs
I'm not a fan. Personally, I prefer sRGB off and just setting the colour balance slider to max in the display settings. sRGB makes all my icons look washed out, like when you leave a print exposed to sunlight and the ink fades. ????

Something wrong with your screen then. The color calibration is a lot more accurate in sRGB mode, but that doesn't mean you can enjoy the original calibration more since it's more "fun" to look at. sRGB, while more accurate, looks a bit washed out in my eyes but after having used it for a while I don't want to switch back because of how exaggerated and saturated the original calibration is.
Guys you are never statisfied.
You have a choice between two options, stop complaining, choose the one you prefer, and try screen calibration apps like Scrreen Balance, or wait for specific mods/app.
sRGB is close to natural colors all objective tests and done on labs say that, what you like is a different thing, many screens are oversaturated so people are used to that. Thoses complain threads are useless.
Just got my replacement device.
Screen is now perfect and even (had tint problems on the 1st device).
And really loving the sRGB mode instantaneously! NOT too yellow, and finally colors which are not crying" HERE I'M! I'M REEEEED! NOOO, HERE! I'M BLUUUUUUE!"
Great job, Oneplus! Thanks!
People who are complaining here just have no clue and are just conditioned by the companies into loving overblown colors. (Just like many people love too loud and too bass-heavy music because the music industry has conditioned them into that.)
Its a similar thing on the S7E, which in 'basic' (sRGB) mode has been measured as the most accurate phone screen available. Once you get used to the more natural look its difficult to go back to 'shop mode'.
Try it for a few days. You can always switch back
As an added bonus you may also have slightly better battery life.
Its making the decision to keep the phone as a second driver easier and it will replace the p9000.
Compared with s6 on basic mode and op3 does a better job, couldn't do a good job in clicking pics tho, you can barely make out anything in these
I really love the sRGB mode. Finally the colors aren't so super shiny anymore. Coming from an iPhone and never liking Samsung like colours that's a really big deal for me.
When white is not white, then it sucks. Better give us KCAL control,
Let me decide which contrast, hue and tone i want =b
So, i agree, sRGB sucks

Absolutely agree with you, when white is not white it sucks, other colors do appear more natural, this mode is best for viewing photos and videos rest I'm not sure .
We need custom kernels with kcal, waiting to try out cm but dash ????
They should call it sDRAB it makes my screen look like a corpse. I like a little spice. sRGB is way too bland albeit accurate. I guess it's useful when using photoshop or snapseed but I don't see any day to day application for it. Other than dying of boredom...

Which screen calibration do you prefer?

Just want to know if you guys want a oversaturated screen (Default) or a realistic one, but a little yellowish (sRGB)
Thank you !
Srgb for me as seeing accurate colors is the best for my work. But i think one plus can improve tge color accuracy further without making whites yellowish but by making whites look like whites
DCI_P3. Much better than either default (saturation fest) or sGRB (accurate, but yellowish). Try it!

Using DCI_P3 too, and I can confirm, it's better for me than those two.
