Verizon Pixel 4 Xl - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Am I the only one getting a Pixel 4 xl from Verizon? They have a 450 trade in offer for upgrades. I bought a used Galaxy S5 for 50 bucks and will be trading it in for the $450. I honestly used to love rooting my phones but I haven't bothered the past year and haven't missed it. So that doesn't really matter to me anymore.

I did the exact same thing. My Pixel 4 XL arrives tomorrow!

If you don't care about rooting your phone then Verizon is the way to go.

Sometimes people find an exploit and can open up rooting/unlocked bootloaders on Verizon, sometimes they can't. But ultimately, since Pixel phones come without any bloat, I find rooting to be mostly unnecessary. If it happens, then great! If it doesn't, I feel no loss. And in the meantime, I'm saving about $400 ($450 in trade-in, minus shelling out $60 for the phone to trade in).

I only need root for system optimizations, allowing tethering (since Verizon thinks they can bar you from using a feature of your phone) and Viper4Android. Other than that I wouldn't need to root. I long for the day when I can just buy a phone and not have to worry about it.

I'm a Verizon customer with a Pixel 2 XL and locked bootloader, and can use my phone as a hotspot. I use the feature pretty regularly to get my tablet online. Are they disabling that for some folks?

Not sure how you are doing that. There is a provisioning thing that pops up if you don't pay the $30 to use it and you're on Verizon. You might be paying for it and not know it. I'd check.

The other great reason for obtaining root is using VPN and VPN tethering. If you use both of those apps, you can bypass ALL carrier caps on hotspot tethering. They also can't throttle video usage because you are behind a VPN.

Yes, that as well. I don't have to do that right now though because I am still grandfathered into unlimited (no throttle) data with Verizon. I still use a VPN though sometimes.

Most Verizon plans include mobile hotspot at no additional cost. I'm on the fUDP, which includes 15 gigs of hotspot (see attached screenshot). And all current unlimited plans larger than the Start Unlimited include it as well (see second screenshot). Lastly, it doesn't limit me to slow speeds, either (see the third screenshot from my tablet, tethered to my phone). No extra charge! ?

Ha ha, yeah, you might want to check and ensure you are still on the most cost-effective plan for your needs! The fUDP is best for me, since I've got 6 people. We split the $100 monthly nut 6 ways ($16.67 each), and each person has a $20/month access fee. Even after taxes, it's under $40 per month for a legit unlimited plan that includes hotspot and 720p video. There's a guide on reddit r/Verizon on how to enroll in the fUDP, if it's an effective plan for you. If you've got fewer lines, then some of the current plans are cheaper.

I'm holding onto this plan strictly because of 5G. If I have this plan when 5G finally rolls out then I will cut my home internet back to the most basic package (for the always-on security stuff in my home). Then I'll use my phone as my primary internet again. Had been using 300-400GB/mo from 2009-2018.5.

It's not the VPN that you need root for, it's VPN tethering so you don't have to worry about the ISP (Verizon, AT&T, T-mobile, and Sprint) throttling your hotspot usage @ 15 to 20 GB's per month. You can use it forever without hitting the fake usage limit that the ISPs dictate.

Amen, I am waiting for Verizon's fixed 5G service to hit where I live. Then I can kick my wired ISP to the curve, **** COX (suckers), COMCAST, SPECTRUM, AT&T, and the othered wired internet providers. They are monopolies with the state governments acting as their pimps.
Verizon's 5G fixed service is only $50 per month.

Yeah i'm on the fence here. My LgV30 has 1 month left on device payment plan. With the trade in I can get the P4 XL 128 for $23 a month which is less than I was paying for my LG, but then free is less than $23/month lol.

Mine wasn't working the other day, but is now. Try a couple power off cycles (not just restart)?

I purchased as 4 XL thru my job on VZW. I haven't felt a need to root my phone for at least the last few years (last phone I rooted was an HTC device I cant remember. LOL

Don't hold your breath for an exploit. They didn't find one for the 2 or the 3. They found one for the OG Pixel, but only under a certain firmware version.

Pre-Ordered my HD7

Just pre-ordered my HD7 at MobileCityOnline dot com for $699(unlocked). Not sure if I like T-Mobile and hence I have AT&T, I will stick with AT&T.
However, once they have HD7 in stock, I will get an email and have 24hr to cancel.
Anyone else with lower price that you would like to share?
That sounds like a reasonable price for the phone.
Yikes, that's a fair bit more than I was hoping to pay. I was hoping for around $100 less, if not moreso. I spoke to someone at T-Mobile regarding the phone and while she wasn't sure of the exact pricing she said according to what she's heard it'll sell for around $500 full price, though naturally it'll be locked to T-Mobile. I hope that's the price it winds up being, though I wouldn't mind paying a bit more.
I’ve been considering doing the same thing. I’ve been a hard-keyboard/Tilt guy for a long time, but from what I’ve read, I think I’m now willing to trade the hard keyboard for the large display. But this represents compromise. I don’t understand why I can’t have both.
I’m sure you’ve done your research and confirmed that the device will work on the AT&T network.
Have you made your decision because you feel that the HD7 will not come to AT&T? With a price difference of $500, does the Samsung Focus with the super AMOLCD display not become a contender?
I’m going to have to hold off for a bit and see what happens.
Dave
Doesn't that mean you'll only get EDGE speeds, though? I did that with the Nexus One. Bought it when it was first released and only had 3G for T-Mobile, but I was on AT&T.
Eventually I made the switch to T-Mobile, though. Much better prices and unlimited data!
I believe they (AT&T v Tmob) both have unlimited domestic data. Unfortunately, I missed-out on AT&T's unlimited international data. Now neither offers this.
I would switch in a second if anyone offered unlimited international data. This is an issue of increasing importance as the new OS appears to me to be more WWW centric as opposed to relying on device-based memory. (disclaimer: this is a personal opinion of one who has never used the new device)
Tethering is also fairly important to me, but my gut is that we will see this feature relatively soon.

I'm positive AT&T only offers an "Unlimited" plan that caps at 2GB. After 2GB is used, you're charged 10 dollars per GB used.

I made my decision based on the hardware, and I don't think I like Samsung writing in the front and the back of my phone. HTC(3 letters: minimum) looks better on my phone. I would love to have super AMOLCD on my HTC, but larger screen is more important for me because I like to watch movies and surf the net.
Wow, I was hoping to purchase one directly from T-Mobile and they usually retail their high-end devices at $499. Hopefully that is the case.
i've seen it as low as $529.99 for pre-order
I am torn now.
After some research, I ended up liking Samsung Focus better than HD7. I guess I'll cancel my order and wait until one of this baby (unlocked or AT&T)

I have a feeling they're going to screw some people over with this, myself included. Before I switched to the TB I paid for hotspot on my DX. Now that I'm on the TB it no longer shows up in my features, and I bet they will switch to tiered data before the 15th. Forcing me to change my plan to re-add tethering and go to tiered data. Pretty much defeating the whole purpose of why I bit the bullet and threw down $700 to get this phone and be on unlimited 4G before they did away with it.

It's a free promotion and it says it when you use the hotspot. They can't charge you or sign you up for something during a free promotion. When I spoke to Verizon they said it will be some kind of notification (they don't know what yet) sent out that the promotion is over. I tried to opt out before the end of the promotion and both reps couldn't find a way because they didn't have anything to opt me out except a note on my account.

it's the people doing this that are the reason this tiered data crap is happening in the first place. I pay for things I use, especially with all the attention illegal tethering is getting now.

So if I was already signed up for tethering on my account before switching to the tb, it should automatically go back on it once the promotion is over without having to change my plan?
Whatever you had on your plan should carry over, Tethering and all.

If we were to add the tethering on to your account you will c the charge....it will not show the soc for tethering until after the promotion is over next month. So you are correct by saying the tethering did not roll over because as far as your billing is concerned it did not roll over because it's a different soc than ur 3g hotspots....if u choose to keep or "add" tethering it will not effect your unlimited data so no worries

ah ok. Couldn't help but be paranoid about it, after what AT&T did when they went tiered last year, although they didn't offer tethering before then for the iPhone, but if you wanted tethering when they added it you had to give up unlimited data.

I always felt it was more people like you as too why people like us have to find a way to get our phones tethering the way we want it and deserve it: FREE.
The majority allow Big Red and AT&T to tell us this is how it will be pay it or don't have it. And people complain about it but still shell out the money to these companies. If more people stood together we'd get things change. Lest that's how it used to be. Now most are too busy bending over to the companies to stand up to them.

WRONG do you remember when Verizon rolled out 3g data service back in the day and it was tiered at first as well? It was long before there were apps for tethering and before a majority of people even knew what tethering was. It's their way of making more money.

Eh you are stretching it there...yeah they had "tiers" but there was always an unlimited data option and lower options, like there are now. With the new tiered plans there won't be an unlimited data anymore...it will be how ATT is currently charging for their data.

Wifi Tethering (T-Mobile)

I know most of us have rooted roms and tethering is not a problem but just in case you dont want to circumvent the system T-Mobile now has free tethering with unlimited data plans. Not sure how else to say this but here we go. Yesterday while in the T- Mobile store the rep I formed me of a recent change. Anyone with unlimited internet can now get tethering for free.... Unlimited tethering and not the first 509 as stated on the web by T-Mobile. I am not a rookie and was simply passing this on .Now if you have asked a rep today and they told you different then fine. But if your statements are based on anything prior to today ease refrain til you ask. Now I am simply posting as said prior as an FYI.... There IS a recent change in the fine print language that indeed allows 500MB of tethering on 'Unlimited' data accounts, and I believe this is what the rep was referring to, whether intentional or not. It likely will never be 'unlimited tether' due to the fact of network restraints, and they have repeatedly indicated they do NOT want to be anyone's ISP for home-based bandwidth. Widespread 'unlimited tether' would bring this network to its knees in mere days. Please consider that this rep wasn't completely knowledgeable/forthcoming.

Welp, I did some quick google-digging, and DID come up with an interesting change in terms on all plans BUT the Unlimited Nationwide 4G, which still maintains the 500MB limit:
http://deals.t-mobile.com/unlimited-4g-data-no-contract
This page indicates all other 'Unlimited' data plans (no UN4G) can tether to their full rate...and fall back to 2G when the bucket empties. I'm happy to be wrong, playya! LOL!
EDIT:
Aw man: again misleading..the fine print:
"Smartphone Mobile Hotspot: (Tethering/Wi-Fi Sharing): Qualifying plan required. Plan data allotment applies.; Unlimited 4G data plan includes 500 MB of tethering. No roaming. Use of connected devices subject to T-Mobile Terms and Conditions."
This statement can be read several ways, naturally...TMO really needs to step up and simplify this silly language.

Gotcha...correct info is more important than right/wrong. I just recall several months back a thread where users were bemoaning paying for Unlimited Nationwide 4G and not getting ANY tethering...even when they wished to pay extra for it...it simply wasn't offered (assumed too abusive to the network). Even I was shocked they changed and allowed 500MB on that UN4G plan. Cheers!
I have the $30 pre paid 5 gig plan and you can add tethering for $15 a month. I have used it though with apps just during power outages. I never had an issue but I don't come close to using the 5 gigs anyways.

I know most of us have rooted roms and tethering is not a problem but just in case you dont want to circumvent the system T-Mobile now has free tethering with unlimited data plans. At least thats what they told me yesterday and added to my regular No-Contract acct. Call them up and check it out or sign up online and see. I was told its a feature that was just added on for them this month. My boy added it to his Iphone so I know it does work...
Hope it helps someone.... If this is old info my bad:good:

I just added it to my plan. I chatted with them first to confirm that it could later be canceled without affecting the basic plan. They prorated the first monthly fee because I'm already in middle of the billing period.
It annoys me that they make it so hard to find exact terms and conditions. At the moment, the blurb on the signup page doesn't say anything about limiting the high speeds to the first 500 MB, just says "Plan data allotment applies." The allotment is first 5 GB at up to 4G speed; time will tell if I get that with other connected devices.
How would they even know (sorry if that's an ignorant question)? Truth be told, I've been tethering all afternoon since my DSL went down. I decided to make it "official" when I found out it could take a couple of days to get my regular DSL back up again, but I didn't have any problems throughout the afternoon tethering a laptop and a tablet. Other than suddenly seeing a surge of use, how would they know I have tethered devices?

They randomly check user agent strings. I started getting the warning texts a few months ago (was on value unlimited which doesn't have a tethering allotment) and then they blocked me from accessing Internet Explorer from my laptop via mobile hotspot (but could still use Chrome or my iPad). One phone called they switched me to Simple Choice and kept my contract term so I didn't have to pay a migration fee.

I just switched to unlimited 4g a few weeks ago and I've occasionally gotten rerouted to a page that says I don't have tethering or I've reached my data limit. Disabling tethering and reloading the page works to bypass the page I'm using native android tether, and that's the only problem I've seen so far.

5.1 upgrade killed my wifi hotspot on verizon

I did a 100% clean flash using the factory images. I pay for the hotspot service but when i go to use it it give the error "Your order could not be processed" anyone else having similiar issues?
Did you flash the Google image or the Verizon image? if its the Google Image I would think you would have to edit the same files you did to make it work in 5. 0. 1.
My hotspot never worked 'out of the box' so to speak. but I am grandfathered in with the unlimited plan so I'm not sure the right answer is.

Ok i just got off the phone with Verizon apparently it they were not billing me and when i spoke to them yesterday about advanced calling they must have turned it off.
So disregard this information.

Next question is "why would you pay $29.99 a month for something you can change in the build.prop for free?" I understand that you want to be legal but you are paying for your data already, why pay again? I already give them $292.00 a month for 4 lines and only one grandfathered unlimited, I refuse to give them anymore for my data.
Yes, I am not sure how it is legal for them to charge you extra for a hotspot. Even if I had plan that had X gigabytes a month I don't think it is very fair to charge me extra to use my X amount of data however I please. Pretty amazing after the FCC gave them the smackdown over this. I guess if you go with the "Share Everything" plan the hotspot is included.
A few thoughts this.... Yeah they shouldn't be able to charge for this but they can charge for the app that enables it.... Second I haven't paid for it in years and always felt weird using it... Started to pay for it.... 10 a month for me for unlimited and I started to use the **** out of it... Worth 10 for the comfort when using it.
Well its common practice to charge extra for tethering even in the UK. You pay for "unlimited data" but that package is to be designed to be used from a mobile handset. As soon as they allow you to tether, that changes from a mobile handset to home broadband and the propensity to massively saturate the cell network increases dramatically when the connecting device is an actual computer compared to a mobile device. I'm in two minds about this, where I believe I should be able to use data for what I want of its unlimited. That said, if everyone tethered, my mobile data experience would be much poorer. It is what it is.

There is no app, it's built in, if you are on Verizon edit 2 system files and done. It is an option to enable in the pull downs.
Yes people were abusing it back when it was unlimited but those plans only exist on the business side now.

Just add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to the biuld.prop. No need to pay for tether. I have unlimited data and use the theater for free on my vz nex6

What that consent decree was about was Verizon pressuring Google to remove the tethering apps from the play store. Clearly Verizon is not allowed to do that. What is not clear is whether or not Verizon can pressure the device manufacturers to put software on the devices that allow Verizon to do a subscription check and deny the user the ability to use the MHS functionality of the device w/o paying money to Verizon. I suspect if the FCC thought that was illegal, they would have included that as part of the consent decree.
The FCC isn't a court though so to know for sure if a court would find it a violation of the Block C restrictions, someone would have to have standing to sue the FCC to enforce the Block C license restrictions under a writ of mandamus. An owner of a device who was subscriber of Verizon under a legacy plan would have standing to sue but they would have to want to spend the money to sue the FCC. There would be no damages to recover from the FCC so you would be paying out of pocket for this with no chance of a monetary recovery to recoup the costs of litigation.
If you won, all you would get out of it is an order from the FCC ordering Verizon to stop pressuring the manufacturers to put software like that on devices and maybe you could get an order ordering Verizon to work with the manufacturers to update the software on the devices that already have the blocking software on them. And you may lose if your legal arguments aren't strong. So obviously, that is why no one does it.
Having said that, it is PERFECTLY LEGAL for you to mod the device and/or use an app to unblock the devices MHS functionality on your own and there is nothing Verizon can do to stop you.

That's debatable. However, like I pointed out above, if the FCC thought that Verizon was violating the terms of the block C license restrictions by doing that, I am sure they would have included it in the earlier consent decree. As I also pointed out above, the FCC isn't the last word on what is a violation of the block C license restrictions. But no one else is going to bother doing anything about it.

Do you know does that stop the subscription check entirely so that a query never gets sent to Verizon?
Really I can go out and buy an unlimited (consumer) plan on Verizon right now? I don't think so.

No but you can't buy a business unlimited plan any longer either.
You said UDP only exists on the business plans. Anyone who had UDP when Verizon eliminated the option can keep it be it a business or a consumer account. But no new UDP lines except during the Apple glitch.

[Black Friday] T-Mobile 6T Free with trade in and new line.

For those wondering about if the 6T will be on sale on Black Friday. T-Mobile just announced their deals.
https://www.t-mobile.com/news/magenta-friday-deals
Open a new line, trade in a device, get the phone free. Could be a good deal with those with a family plan. Didn't read the details on what services you need to add. A basic line to add on is $10/$15 a month. So you could walk away with a deal just as good as the launch deal just by adding a line and not using it.
OnePlus will most likely not have a black Friday deal, as they haven't in the past. They discount the devices by $1 for Black Friday. So is expected to be the same this year.

Makes me think if its even a better deal than launch offer. But I don't need any more lines.
PS: Any one knows if this can be combined with buy one get one line offer?

Well that's the thing, if add on a line and just don't use it, you're paying the 10-15 a month, and you're about on par with the launch deal (launch deal is 12.50x24mo).
You also might be able to get some good rates just by going to a family plan. (For those that aren't on a family plan already).
I wonder if you'd have to change your plan? I am considering getting another device as my oldest son is on a Freedom Pop plan currently. I'm grandfathered into an older unlimited plan for less than Tmo can offer at the moment.

That's a tough one. I think you will have to change your plan because a single line is a different type of plan than a family plan.
I'm on that plan as well, except in a family plan. I'm locked in to before everything was unlimited. So my rate is for the most basic minutes (I think it was shared 200 mins) and texts, but has since been upgraded to unlimited for the same price over the years.
We have a few reps around here. I'm sure someone will give us some more clear details.

Yeah, and come to think of it, I had added a 5th line to our plan to get their Samsung Gear S unlocked a couple years back. The phone number still shows on my account but $0 charges each month. This almost seems better than their half off trade in, but not if I have to switch plans.
How long does the line need to be active? I remember with past promos, you could cancel after 2-3 cycles.

If you're already on a family plan, then you're golden. No need to switch plans.
The only time they would make you switch is if you're going to a family plan from an individual plan, or the other way around. They are separate things and can't cross over. But being that you're already on a family plan, you can still keep your old plan rates. I'm on an old plan too and not changing. You can add or take away as many as you want, as long as you have at least 2 lines, you can stay as a family plan, and keep your rates.

It's close. Looks like the big ones they removed from the list are really old OnePlus devices, Nexus 6, and oddly enough, iPhones? Looks like the S6 might be the cheapest phone to pick up if you need a trade in device for this deal.

It's weird that it's still advertised on their site though.
I found this in the terms and conditions: "eligible trade-in of same operating system req'd."
That's the reason that iPhones aren't eligible. Wonder who came up with that? What if someone wanted to get away from the IOS stronghold? lol
