Depth map or 3d? - Huawei P30 Pro Questions & Answers

I hear so much about the tof and quad cameras of this phone. Admittedly they are all very powerful and versatile but I'm still trying to understand how to make the most of the tof camera. Can I use it for a 3d photo? Can I obtain a depth map for it? What else can I do with it other than AR measure? Thanks in advance

I don't believe so, currently.
There is a depth map app which apparently uses it, but my experience of it was pretty pants tbf

A very good app (gimmick) called night vision tof sensor on play store is a cool one to play with tof sensor capability and make your friend jaleous ?

Camera Zoom

This camera has some kind of zoom, right? Optical or digital? Can someone explain how to zoom in the default camera app? I can't find the buttons or settings or anything... TIA!
there is no way it can be optical, even a photo amateur will know that.

and if that is not enough, you can also use 3rd party professional photo camera software, results are even more amazing.

I'm actually a hobby photographer. The cell phone cam does indeed have many great features... but such a small sensor in a phone + plastic optics will never be on-par with a real camera, even one with less megapixels.
yup for real photos i use my Cannon (model #) IS... damn having a mental lapse, can't remember a lot of anything

Slowmo (higher FPS) video capture app?

Hi fellas,
I stumled upon an app for TimeLapse (capturing video in extremely low fps) and made me think of my old Samsung INNOV8 that could capture video with up to 120fps (lower resolution of course). Considering it was build around TIOMAP 2430 (330mhz ARM) and given what we have packing, i'm pretty sure our junk is more than capable of slowmo video in adequate resolutions, but I couldn't find an app for that.
Any thoughts/ideas?

I'd also like an app that could do this and would donate/pay for it if it worked well at a decent resolution.

I second this, It would be nice little feature to have as a way to record cool rain stuff etc. I am sure its going to be limited by the cmos sensor, or whatever type of sensor the DHD uses for its camera.

Camera on X8

Anyone knows any way of improving the X8 camera?
I can't scan a barcode without auto-focus and I was trying to develop something and can't test it on my phone....

Autofocus is a hardware related function,so i think its impossible.
i dont know about barcode thing but actually iam using latest camera ZOOM app and it is brilliant with zoom feature and pure 3mp camera better than stock camera , in stock camera if u r taking a pic for something small or far from u it will be dizzy and not a good res. but with camera ZOOM , picture never gets dizzy . srry again if this is not what u wanted .
EDIT : and about the autofocus thing i agree with rodrigo it is impossible

I know but It was only one thing I found and I told its for video recording. And zoom apps have very bad quality
As others have already stated, the X8 has no autofocus capability. In addition, the minimum focus distance is somewhere between 20-30 cm (standard problem with a fixed focus lens), so it's practically impossible to get a good shot of a barcode, unless it's huge
However, there is a "trick" you can try, at least if you just want to test the capabilities of your own software.
1. You'll need to find (or buy) a small magnifying glass, one of those cheap €1-2 glasses with do;
2. Next, hold the magnifying glass directly in front of the camera - the camera lens should be touching the magnifying glass, as close to the centre as you can get (be careful not to drop your phone!);
3. Point the phone at your barcode. You should now be able to focus much closer than before (to within 5-10cm);
4. Take your photo!

Most of these photos used a single magnifying glass, but for one of the coins I used TWO identical glasses joined together with tape.

Thats smart..still where da hell will i get so small lenses in my town!
You don't need a small lens lol, the magnifying glasses I used were about 7cm in diameter! Having a large lens also makes it easier to balance the X8 on top
You just need to make sure that the camera lens is placed as close to the middle of the magnifying glass lens as possible (to prevent/minimize distortion of the image).

[Q] Gear VR 360 degree photo maker?

With google cardboard, I can use Google's "Cardboard Camera" app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.vr.cyclops) to create my own 360 degree 3D photos that I can view with google's cardboard app.
Is there something similar for use with the Gear VR apps?
Just download the Surround Shot mode from within the Note 4 camera and then you will see them in the Gear VR 360 gallery

Surround Shot does a great job but is a 2D image.

I would just disable the gear vr service and use the Cardboard Camera viewer from the Gear VR if you want 3D. The KISS principle.

Well that's exactly what Gear VR 360 degree photo really is. It's just a spherical photo same as Google Cardboard's. In other words, 360 or spherical photos taken with our Note 4 will always be flat spherical photos. For them to be really 3D, we would require a two lens camera.

The cardboard camera gives a 3D 360 image. I don't know how they do it, but it's really amazing. @Rayan, try the Google cardboard camera before assuming it's a flat image...

Not exactly. 3D photos have been taken for decades by taking 2 photos in succession and simply altering the camera position slightly for each one (shifting stance from left leg to right for example or by turning your camera as when using Cardboard Camera) and stereo viewing the two shots together. Using cardboard camera you clearly get a 3D image and not 2D as it is a 3D capture and not a spherical panorama shot like Surround Shot.

Thanks for the brief explanation, but yeah I know how 3D photos work, and what Google Cardboard Camera really does is a pseudo 3D panorama. Not a real one as with a two camera setup.
Amazing algorithms nonetheless, but not real 3D. You can compare with the 3D images and videos (taken with real 3D cameras) included in the Gear VR and you'll see what I mean.
@garyd9, I have used the Cardboard Camera several times and I know for a fact the output is not 3D. There's no parallax perception, just pseudo depth perception.
I rather have a full 360 degree panorama with Google Sphere or Samsung Surround Shot, than a pseudo 3D blurred on top and bottom panorama. However I like the audio feature of Cardboard Camera.

I was pointing out that the statement earlier quoted was incorrect. The spherical photos taken with the note 4 (or note 5) are NOT the same as the photos taken with google cardboard. Regardless of if they are "real" 3D or "fake" 3D, the google cardboard images are still 3D.
Again, unlike the samsung camera ones, the cardboard camera ones APPEAR 3 dimensional when viewed. So, they are NOT the same.
BTW, being you are obsessing over technicalities, for imaging a still subject, two lenses are not required for 3D. It's only required that the still subject be captured from two perspectives, each approximating a view from each of the two eyes. So, if you take a picture of a still subject, move the camera a certain distance left or right (the distance approximating the distance between the eyes of an average person) and take another picture, they could be combined to be a "real" 3D image.
My best guess is that this is how google's cardboard camera works...

Again, I do understand how that works. However I beg to disagree because in this case the images are taken from the same point in space (pivot), in other words no lens separation. In the case of Cardboard Camera, they are using algorithms to emulate a two image separation which for me does not seem 3D at all.
Have you ever used a Nintendo 3DS XL? The effect while not panoramic, is real 3D because those images and videos are actually shot with two cameras.

Ah, perhaps that's why it doesn't work out for you... I don't think it'd work well if the origin point of each frame was identical.
Instead of pivoting the phone, pivot your entire body. (When I did it, I just spun around in an office chair.) That will change the origin point of each "frame" of the photo. While not perfect, that allows subsequent frames of the overall image to closely simulate the distance between two eyes on a human.

Technically, holding out your phone and moving it around you in a circle creates the aforementioned pivot, because you are the pivot! :laugh:
Kidding aside, yeah I got your point and I have tried it several times while rotating in my office chair too and it does create a seamless panorama, but the so called "depth effect" I can barely see.
Now (while its not stated in the instructions) if you hold the camera with your arms extended while rotating to create more distance that becomes a radii and then the effect is a bit more perceptible. :good:

Odd... when I did it in my desk char, then displayed the image via google cardboard camera app using the gear VR (with oculus dev test mode enabled and the service disabled, of course), the effect was incredibly realistic (as long as I didn't look up or down.) It was impressive enough that I showed my workplace to my wife (who has never been there) and she was able to judge distances fairly well...
(actually, too well: her comment was "who's that attractive woman who sits only about 10 feet behind you? Does she have to be so close?)
I wish I still had the image, but I deleted it when I returned the gear vr.. (It didn't fit really well on my nose.. causing soreness. It also provoked me to get incredible motion sickness while standing almost completely still - which is pretty impressive.)

Hahaha BUSTED!!!
How come you got dizzy with the Gear VR? Supposedly the Gear VR is less prone to create motion sickness than Cardboard because of its dedicated set of sensors that improve motion tracking with a smoother experience.
But yeah, some people are more susceptible to get dizzy with VR.

It didn't start until the third day playing with it. I downloaded and started playing a demo of something called something like "dreadhalls." It seemed like a 1st person dungeon crawler. (I was really impressed with it..) After a couple hours with it, I was ready to lose my dinner. From that point forward, I couldn't handle anything beyond watching a movie.
Then I noticed that the soreness on my nose was leaving a big red mark. So, back to Best Buy it went.

Yeah, Dreadhalls is a neat game!
For me the dizziness went away the more I used it and getting dizzy (to some extent) is part of the fun. That's why I love Theme Parks :good:

There wasn't any additional replacement padding.. just the single padding that was already attached to the gear VR.
I have to admit that I really liked the device. A completely portable "VR" rig (even if the resolution isn't great) is pretty nice. (Of course, it's only visual VR, but still damn nice.)
The other flaw I found with the Gear VR was that my kids (10 and 12) kept "borrowing" my phone. That made me remember that the gear VR really only should be considered an accessory for a specific phone (my note5) and a specific phone that has a sealed battery... so even if I would keep the phone for more than my normal 1 to 1.5 years, the gear VR would start to become useless as the sealed battery started to lose capacity.
(This last consideration wasn't really a factor in returning it, to be honest.)

That's odd about the replacement "thicker" padding, maybe it only was included in the initial release?
You made a VERY VALID point to consider when using the Note 5 or S6 with the Gear VR!
Actually that's one of the main reasons why I didn't upgrade my Note 4 to the Note 5. :crying:

whats wrong with xiaomi cameras?

did anyone notice the strange waving all xiaomi cameras have?
when recording a video with any camera from a xiaomi phone, the video looks to have wavy strange deformations constantly,
i dont know if thats the optical stabilization that ruins the whole video, the constant autofocus or the rolling shutter of the camera, but i remember this effect since the xiaomi mi2s and still present in the mi5, it totally makes me mad,
50$ phones like the blackview A8 return a way much better video recording result than a mi5,
is there any damn way to disable this stupid wavvy effect? i am prone to think its the ois rather than a rolling shutter effect from the sensor,
but probably both work to ruin the video.
If you try FreeDcam there are different methods of OIS control in the settings, maybe that may help remove the waviness?
