So just messing around with my 4 XL today, I have the Smooth Display enabled, and honestly just don't see a big difference between my 3 XL, as far as scrolling websites, or moving up down in Contacts or Google Feed panel.
But I then went to Developer Options, and enabled the Force 90hz option, and tried going through those same things again, and then I noticed it, everything did actually feel smoother and bit faster. But that's supposed to be a huge battery drain leaving that on.
My question, is Smooth Display not really working or allowing websites to be shown in 90hz?

A better question would be, were those apps stuttery to begin with? If they weren't, then the 90hz is working properly, IMO. It will only kick in when it is really needed. I think that's what they were trying to accomplish with it. But from what I have heard, the latency caused from going from one app that uses 90hz back to 60 and vice versa, can be a little choppy at times. Probably why they gave us the option to enable all the time. Just in case their initial smooth display offering isn't so smooth. I'm sure it will get better over time.
Brownlee and a couple others have stated the smooth display is buggy and will sometimes get stuck at 60.
Are people just gonna force 90hz in Developer Options for now, until a monthly security update fixes Smooth Display? Or is that a major battery hit?

How would anyone be able to answer this today?
You know, you could just try it out and see the battery impact for yourself.
Brownlee said he had done just that and the word he used for the battery life after was "obliterate" which is a long way from good or even ok as a descriptor. He did say he was going to keep it that way so it wasn't a deal breaker in his use. Would have been nice if he quantified that with some actual numbers but it's all I've seen so far. The tech has been in their portfolio for quite some time, my hope is they just need to tune it up somewhat.
Man I'm not forcing 90hz. I seriously notice a big difference without it. No need for me.
Yeah he said obliterate but he uses his phone with max brightness all the time and using tons of social media. Everyones usage style is different. So got to take those reviewers with a grain of salt and see how your usage is.

Exactly, this is why I said I wished he would have quantified it, if I knew what he got and how he got it I can make something of it. As is there is little that can be gleaned from it other than it is most def worse. In fact that review was fairly rushed in feel which puts him in good company, there was clearly a lot of people that wanted to get the review out the door quick and I saw many factual errors, omissions, judgments made with little perspective, etc. I understand it's part of the game but it doesn't help us on our end.
I saw a reddit post which stated there is a bug where if the screen brightness is below 75%, 90hz is disabled....

Well 90htz is a complete waste of time and cost, if brightness has to be over 75%.
My phone's always around 60% screen brightness.

"Waste of time and cost," because the dynamic doesn't work properly? FFS. If it makes you feel any better, OP didn't even attempt a switch, it's just forced all the time by default. Which, in affect is what you need to do to make this work. Is that a perfect solution, ofc not and I have no doubt that google will fix it. But FFS, quit sh*tting on Google. Either, you bought the device and are now feeling buyers regret, or you're just a troll. Either case, both scenarios will pass...
I would think Google will fix this 90hz bug needing brightness to be above 75%. I expect the next few monthly security updates to have a lot of bug fixes.
It's not like Pixel phones only ones that launch with IS issues, new iPhone's have been known to launch with buggy iOS versions, takes a month or so for them to be ironed out by Apple.

Irony.... I wasn't ****ting on Google. Get a sense of humour..
My point was simple... If 90htz only works when your screen brightness is above 75%, then it's pretty useless....
And yes I know Google will release a patch to rectify, just like they did with the pixel 2 and the muted colours....
The real irony is another year, another pixel launch and another screen problem !!! Again software just like pixel 2..
Oh and let's not forget the patch that dropped screen brightness to prevent screen burn on pixel 2...
Of course Google will issue a patch..

While I agree about the screen issues, I refer you to what I had said about OP. Their devices are forced 90hz constantly. So, in affect, at this point, that is our only option to make 90hz work at higher brightnesses. Which makes it exactly like a OP device. So, it's technically not a waste of money if you can't use it above 75%, because you can. You have to force it, but it works. That's all I'm saying

It's just a fail that you have to go into developer settings...as for 90htz, I doubt if id have noticed it working or not being honest !!
I personally think whilst the pixel 4 is an upgrade over my 2xl, I personally don't think it's a big enough update and some updates imho are a waste of time..
Face unlock.. the finger print sensor worked brilliantly and was in exactly the correct position on the phone.
Soli. Time will tell whether it's a gimic.
Camera..
When the 2 came out, Google were shouting from the roof tops about the highest ever dxmark for the camera.
The p4 camera has improved no doubt, but it's no longer king..
Personally, I'd have kept the finger print scanner. It's a very strong biometric and it worked brilliantly.
A bigger battery. What are Google thinking ?
Bigger MP camera sensor... What could Google do with the latest 48mp sensors and their computer Voodoo witchcraft
An unbreakable screen like the motorola force phones... These phones are getting increasingly expensive..
The 2 tone coloured back.. bring it back. The p4 back is now just like every other phone manufacturers now.
2 steps forward and one back with the p4 I think it's a fair comment

Guys,
I need your opinion on something. I have this annoying thing that given my slight OCD is going to drive me crazy. It's this: scrolling in any app (main culprits are Facebook and Youtube) is simply not as smooth as on my OnePlus One. It has this stuttering effect which is not super obvious at first, but when the phones are next to each other the difference is highly noticeable.
What is your experience with scrolling in apps? Is it smooth as butter or do you also notice some stutter? Could I have a dud device? Anyway to find out?
Scrolling seems fine to me, but I'm not comparing it with something else side by side, and have no ocd...

That is my experience as well. A osprey based roms have slightly better in app scrolling. That Samsung browser is so bad that I had to stop using it.

I have ocd too and im very sensitive to lag and choppy scrolling. Completely agree. I have the oneplus one as well. Note 5 is faster everywhere but scrolling is not that smooth. YouTube is really choppy compared to other phones. My oneplus one's screen is much less responsive though. input lag everywhere so I would rather have the note 5's choppy scrolling instead.

It's just bizarre really. This thing absolutely flies, it has power to spare, multitasking, Youtube, gaming ... but certain things are just not smooth.
Things I notice that bother me:
Scrolling in apps... Main culprits Youtube and Facebook
Pulling down notification shade... A subtle stutter
Scrolling through a long list op open apps... A small stutter in the beginning
It's small things, but it seems to have issues with refreshing graphics somehow. I don't know, I'm not knowledgeable enough. Unfortunately there is no root available yet for my model (N9200) so all I can do is wait I guess,

I have noticed all those except for the notification shade. I disabled a bunch of apps of course, including that Quick connect and the other thing that was up there all the time, so maybe that helped. I am seeing a ton of improvements in scrolling with all the apps I have disabled but not to where I would call it super smooth. For some reason scrolling in the browser is pretty smooth which is usually the place i see problems on other phones. It must have something to do with how touchwiz handles scrolling cache. If someone comes up with a mod to adjust it, that may almost be a big enough reason for me to root my phone.

Thanks. Yeah, I've done the same (disabling apps etc...). It definitely not bad, but it's not as smooth as other Android phones I've used. Fast yes, perfectly smooth, no.
Updates seem to come quickly. I've had 2 already in 2 weeks. let's see. And with Android M around the corner, I'm sure in a few weeks/months things will be perfect.
Samsung have anyways had this issue with their phones. Never been butter smooth due to bloat ware mainly. No matter the specs phone lags and stutters, I think Samsung should ditch TW.
Note 5 is a fantastic looking phone but ui is concerning.
Utterly bizarre... Things have dramatically improved and I literally did nothing...

I'm so close to returning this, and getting the Nexus 6. I've tried every browser available, and I'm not sure if it's the 64-bit architecture or what, it's probably TouchWiz, I'm not sure. I compared it to my galaxy s5 and it's worse. Why is scrolling terrible? I hope somebody comes up with the fix, id bloated about everything I can, and factory reset.

Download Lightning Browser+ from the playstore. The paid version blocks all adds and the scrolling is very smooth. It's what I'm using on my Note 5.

One thing I found works is to install Adguard (not in store, just google it). It will block ads and make scrolling in Chrome a lot better. The only annoying part I would say is a persistent VPN notification. Adguard uses a local VPN which results in a permanent notification. If you can live with that I found it to be pretty great.

I thought it was just in my head but I gave adguard a try after some time of not using it and I thought it made the whole system faster. Still not 100% sure but things could be a tad smoother and more responsive in general. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth having it constantly running in the background and using chrome or just using lightning browser with its ad blocker built in.

My AT&T version has no issue in scrolling - either in the UI or individual apps I use. I'll get some lag when scrolling fast in the Gallery or FlickFolio but that's because I'm scrolling faster than the thumbnails can load. That's an OS thing, not a h/w or UI thing. Overall the diet Samsung put TW and their own apps on has really paid off.
I'm starting to believe it has something to do with the last "performance increasing update " . I can see from other threads on here that not everyone is on it yet. I received it mid last week. I had another Note 5 before which I returned as it had an issue with the Screen. That one never got upgraded to that stage and was very smooth. This one I have now felt smooth as well, but think that it got worse with the upgrade. I'm now on the update captured in the screenshot. It ends in AHO4. The one before was AHO2.
Once I've figured out how to flash that version on there using Odin3, I will give that a shot and turn off automatic updates. To be continued...

So I'm fairly new to the Nexus 6, but I have had a Nexus 5 in the past (More recently coming from a Zenfone 2)..I've noticed that while applications open fairly quick on Marshmallow (Even the system UI is fairly smooth), I get a lot lag and jank in scrolling, and applications that work well on my girlfriend's 5x have poor performance on my 6.
Can anyone else relate to this? Apps like Pintrest, Instagram, Tumblr, Ebay, Amazon all aren't as smooth as they should be, and sometimes web browsing can be horrendous (Almost like a touch delay when scrolling).
I've tried clean wipes, flashed the stock images, tried non-stock roms, different kernels, everything I can think of, but to me, the phone just isnt as smooth as I thought it would be. I get that it's over a year old, but I still expected a bit more.
Am I alone here? Again, the UI itself is fine, its more application based \ scrolling based.
Well, the 6 and 5x have the same GPU, more or less. The 5x GPU is miniaturized, but otherwise identical.
The 5x has a 1920x1080 display, or roughly 2 million pixels.
The 6 has a 2560x1440 display..... 3.7 million pixels.
So, why would you possibly imagine that with the SAME GPU, but nearly TWICE the number of pixels, that the 6 would be able to produce the same graphical performance as the 5x?
*** UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS!!!

Have you tried turning off the encryption? When I came from the N5 I noticed the phone was not as smooth as the N5 until I turned the encryption off. Early on it made a big difference as they did not have NEON encryption optimizations enabled. Was that was enabled the difference was small but it is still noticeable to me between haveing the encryption running and not. It is not night and day but I think you will notice it.

I don't think expecting a phone that's a little over a year old, (That was a flagship mind you), to run smoothly is unreasonable. While it's pushing more pixels than the 5x, the processor should be quite similar, along with an extra GB of ram.

I've had my Nexus for 13 months. (Purchased in February 2015). I've rooted and run various ROMs on the device over the last year. Since I have the Next plan with AT&T I've been planning on upgrading soon so a couple weeks ago I went back to unrooted stock. Since then I've been having the same issues you mention. I don't have a 5x to compare to, but it is definitely lagging a lot more than before. Last night I was trying to view something on Amazon, and it just sat there with a white screen. Many times my keyboard stays floating above the homescreen when I press the "home" softkey, or stays floating after I am done typing in Facebook, messenger etc. It just LAGS big time. Also the battery drain has been horrendous. I've been getting so PO'd at it I've been tempted to go get a Note (GASP!) Last night was the last straw I uninstalled swiftkey (been a avid user for years never an issue) and the CM Locker I had installed so I could have a different lock screen photo (since I'm no longer rooted). I'm giving it 24 hours, and if it is still acting up, I am either re-rooting or upgrading (although there's like NOTHING that I like right now for devices).

I just did that. Hopefully that helps with my issue too.
Well, mine is mostly related to the jank when scrolling through applications. The UI, keyboard, ect all works fine. However, The worst is browsing web sites with chrome - I can flick to scroll up and there almost seems to be a second delay sometimes. I've never experienced anything like that before. Also when when using apps such as twitter, amazon, ebay, ect, the scrolling is really bad - Worse than my Zenfone 2.
Again, I've fastboot flash'd the complete stock rom multiple times, tried various kernels\modded roms, ect. They all display this behavior, some worse than others.
I love the size, screen quality, and build of this phone, but for a phone that's last year's Google flagship, I find the performance horrible.
Try turn off animations anyway, you don't have to be rooted, unlocked, yust tap build number 7 times, back to settings/ developer options and put to 0 trazitions, animations,animator..and optionally reboot.

Have to say, I have none of those issues as someone else also stated. If it does the same on stock, it might be hardware related. How does the phone behave in recovery? Is scrolling as normal? What recovery are you using? And when you say you went back to stock, did you do a complete factory reset including deleting all your personal data? If so, you can also try re-locking your bootloader and unlocking it and then flash factory image from Google. That will also erase everything off your device, including personal data.
With thousands of people here on XDA using a Nexus 6, your issue seems to be specific to you and your device. Maybe it is a screen/digitizer issue.
Seemed to me the February build was slow and janky but the the March was back to normal performance for me, op didn't state what build you were on. Might be an option

I'm on the March build. I usually fastboot flash every img myself, then do a factory reset in recovery when trying to get back to stock..This time I just used the Flash-All.bat for the March image and I'll do some testing. I doubt this method is the difference, I'm grasping at straws. I'm semi concerned now if no one else is having these issues...Or maybe my expectations are just too high.
Perhaps I'll try a screen recording app and see if I can capture what I'm running into. It's not all apps, and it's not all the time, but its definitely noticeable.
you're not alone. i recently picked up a ZTE zmax 2 and did a side by side app load speed test. the ZTE zmax 2 loaded up youtube noticeably faster, had thumbnails faster, and played faster when clicking play. the zmax 2 is a midrange ATT phone with Snapdragon 410, 2gb ram, 720p screen. it costs $99 at best buy today..
I've noticed this too between my Nexus 6 (purchased 4/2015) and my wife's Nexus 6 (purchased 10/2015). Hers is noticeably smoother.
I do have occasional screen tearing on mine when I use certain kernel/ROMs, so maybe it's janky hardware.

I know the frustration, for me it is kernel related, but we cant do nothing, we need new device tree by google. I'm really disappointed that g3 has QHD screen with 801 and is smoother than nexus 6 with 805

My wifey has a G3 and I can't agree. When she is using my phone, she is always amazed how fluid it is.

Is your wife g3 on 6.0 marshmellow?
Flashing stock over again really didn't do much for performance. I Did however root it, and increase the GPU clock (Actually set it to performance idles at 300mhz then shoots to 600hmz), and that does seem to help. I can sacrifice battery for better performance in this instance.
Have to agree, at around the end of the day (by 40% battery) my phone slows down. I went pure stock. A quick reboot fixes it. But a tad frustrating

If your bigger concern is battery life, you should have chosen some other device with a larger battery capacity, the note series is all about the s pen, that is what makes it unique among the rest, I advice you to grab something like huawei, oppo, one plus, or something like that, there are tons and tons of lackluster devices in that area and cheaper by the way

6hrs sot? That's still very good. If you need more you can try to squeeze out more battery savings, but if you need a lot more than a different device might suit your needs better. Hard to say
Buy a battery pack, charge your phone when necessary, deal with it or buy different phone.

Well, I am not a heavy s pen user, but the fact that the s pen is there, whenever I might need it, is very, very satisfactory, by the way , my exynos 950F 128 GB, achieves 5.5 hrs SOT, and I think it is fine, I use AOD, sync on all time, gps on, entertainment mode on, brightness at 60%, many macrodroid automations, gravity screen, status bar magic, network notif icons , pie control, control center, blockada, dv beep pro, screen adjuster, led control, etc, anything you can imagine,

I should probably keep my mouth shut but I'm not surprised. If you have seen his previous posts you wouldn't be surprised either.
I have learned to ignore them but to be fair, it could just be a case of language barrier.

Exactly! You just nailed it!
Hi all,
As you know, I got this device a couple of weeks ago as a upgrade (birthday pressie).... and on the whole, I am might impressed with it. Compared to previous phones, this is awesome....
However, one odd thing I am experiencing... is battery life? Whilst I read reports of this device and the other I was looking at, Note 10 5G. Both had 5000mah batteries, and reviews RAVED about how good battery life is in them. Some even saying it can be used as a Battery Bank to charge other peoples phone.
However in actual use of the phone, I'm afraid to use it... for merely tapping a few icons, browsing web and running/opening camera... I literally am watching the percentages drain... I thought this thing would be rock solid, and can generally browse/mess around and the battery will slowly decrease...?
Don't get me wrong, if I don't touch it and leave it in standby it will claim to last at least a couple of days... or that said, running it as SatNav and not touching the screen on a 30min drive, it didn't drain the battery at all and stayed at 100% (which did surprise me).
But to me, what appears as light use, tapping icons and surfing around see's it draining fairly quickly. I dread to think if I was playing a high end game, it will prolly be gone in 5 mins.... Good job I don't do games... lol
Cheers, Lister
Morning Lister .. ya got your paddling pool ready for tomorrow lol
Mines been quite doing the same playing with gcam ( I haven't uploaded the XML yet , reming me to do it later ).
I have noticed the battery draining quicker when the screens set to 90mhz , as I've read elsewhere that seems quite normal as the phone has to refresh the screen faster than it would on 60 . Signal strength can be detrimental too , a bad signal means the phone tries harder to pull it in and uses more battery in the process .
When I've finally got everything set up I'll see how long I can get on a charge , still got to copy me 3 stooges collection on to it , all 65gb of it

I think this phone has 90hz refresh rate, not 120mhz. Maybe u wrote it by mistake.
Hi The Mero,
Oh don't, I am not a sun lover at the best of times and these last few days/week's been killing me... lol.
I am, as we speak, practicing my Snow Dance !!! ;-) LOL
Yeah, seems odd that a camera can zap that much battery. I get it has to do a couple of things, active viewfinder, take the pic and then use processing power to render the output. But after reading all the rave reviews, this battery will last you into the next pandemic and all that... It to me, just seems to drain a little too quickly for my liking. I was expecting to get some fun time, without watching the battery drain down...
I think this screen can only go to 90mhz, but that said... I even have my set to the standard 60mhz. I not really played around with it, but it seems quick enough for me at 60mhz and every bit of battery helps. Like being in a heatwave and keeping ya aircon off, whilst sitting at the traffic lights with windows open... Gotta save that fuel/battery... ;-) lol
I did look at battery drain, and Mobile Standby did seem high, which is odd as its never been an issue with my older phones in same location. I'll keep an eye on that though, cheers....

Hi The Mero,
I just noticed this thread pop up, which is similar thing... It seems a few are getting the high Cell Standby for no reason at all... Although they appear to be on the updated version...??
"Cell Standby" battery drain on latest MIUI Global 13.0.12?
Hi, everyone. I bought a Redmi Note 11 Global a few days back and while setting it up, I was amazed at the battery life. It was at 56% when I opened it up, and throughout the entire setup process and after around 5 or 6 hours of screen on time, I...
forum.xda-developers.com
That said, I do have Calls over WiFi enabled, as it's the first time i've owned a phone that supports and is now available on my plan (PAYG lol). So I enabled it, just to try it out... lol
But apparently, this can be a zapper and cause the Cell Standby issue. Might try disabling it, and see if Battery Life improves....
Cheers, Lister
I'm on PAYG too , I turn off internet calling ( volte ) I had an issue on the X3 where you could hear the other person but they couldn't hear you . Some said it was a flaky mic and some said volte ( another name for it ) . Anyways I knocked it off and calls were fine after that . So if you start getting the same issue give that a try . Plus battery issues could be down to the CPU not behaving . Russian forum had some with the CPU stuck at full throttle while others were stuck at lowest speed . All using different miui versions or custom ROMs , this is getting worse every time we read about it
This phone is in need of a custom kernel. I think the default CPU/GPU governor is not properly optimised. We don't want the CPU to fire up all its cores and constantly hit 2.4Ghz while playing candy crush.
Also, MIUI 13 is so restrictive and bland. We are losing controls and features with each new update.
This amazing hardware needs a divorce from its retarded software.
some interesting reading .. miui updates
MIUI 13 Beta MI-V13.0.2 for Redmi Note 11 has been suspended due to a Google Play Server error

In my case, the amazing hardware broke up with its retarded software and is currently married to this chick named Pixel Experience. The experience is way way smooth and is something we and the hardware totally deserves. Though yes we really need a custom kernel, I don't know why Xiaomi hasn't released kernel sources for this device until now

Same here, unlocked bootloader and currently on Evolution X. Though all google apps and services are debloated so basically vanilla. I get 10 hrs screen on time with about 40 hrs standby
Hi All,
The battery on this device is really really shocking.... as in shockingly bad !!!
When I read about 5000mah ( basically double anything I've had prior ) and how good the reviews for battery life were on these devices. I had high hopes, I thought Id be able to tap away, causally wasting hours watching pointless YouTube and whatnot...
However here I am, re-arranging icons.... Configuring Applications (TruePhone and it's GAZZILION options), and watching the percentages just drop off, one by one by one.... I bet if I put a chocolate egg outside in this heatwave, it will melt at a slower rate than the battery drains...
Admittedly, I do have a few Apps on it... but no more than when I look at other peoples phones and it's not like I am putting heavy/tasking apps on. No gaming apps or anything like that... And to watch it go from 100 to 70 in what I think is a short time, is somewhat depressing...
I'll have to charge the ole 5000mah phone up and carry a couple 20,000mah at this rate... lol.
I've even de-bloated some of the system Apps in background... I may treat it to another wipe/reset and test it with barely any load and see what happens...
Cheers, Lister

I've had that issue on my Note 5 as well, and apparently I was not alone and it was in fact an issue that was introduced with Android 10. Turning off VoLTE did work for me, but that of course entailed a significantly worse call quality. I ended up switching to a different carrier and the problem went away. Sucks to see that the issue can still arise on current handsets.
I had a note 5 too , I can't remember if it did it or not, but I switched to a Moto g7 power and it did it on there too . I think your right about the network. I'm on 3 in the UK and never thought of the network being at fault , cheers for that

Because they don't want to and there's not really anything people can do about it.

I know that they legally have to. But which user will sue them if they don't is what I'm saying.
Can someone explain why are animations on my S23+ looking so bad, feeling the same as on mid range A series?? Or am I just missing something?
I have no problem with the animations, but it is true that I set their speed to 0.5
I can confirm this is an issue with the regultar S23 as well but not the Ultra. Phone is laggier than my Moto Edge 30, specially when changing and closing apps.
Might have to do with some settings to save battery life or reduce heat? Hopefully they'll fix it with a system update.
I also set it to 0.5x speed. Feeling snappier.

How did you get it already?
It's still in the pre-order stage. It only officially launches on the 17th.

People started getting their pre-orders sent to them on day one and started receiving them on at least Feb 3rd.
The pre-order stage doesn't mean much unless you're expecting Samsung to have a firmware update for everyone on Feb 17th to add features.
That's one of the things that makes me doubt if it worth the money. It such a great hardware but somehow One UI has glitches. I notice that when the CPU goes to low freq and then when you touch the screen there is microlag until the CPU is boosted again. At least that's my feeling. But how the others don't have it?

I haven't noticed anything of the sort so I can't comment on it. Everything has felt fine to me so far.
I did experience some sort of stutter, but that was when I was messing around with Galaxy Max Hz, so I'm just going to attribute it to that for now.

I also experienced in the past some stutter and battery drain when using Galaxy Max Hz. It feels like two screen controllers fighting against each other.
