No screen off during phone calls - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I could swear their used to be a setting in the phone app to automatically turn off the screen during calls. I can't find it in the version with this device, and although the proximity sensor works when I'm holding it to my ear during a call, when it's in my pocket the screen stays on, (or if receiving a call/connecting while driving it turns on), leading to the mute, bluetooth, or end call buttons being randomly pressed during calls and causing issues. Am I just not finding the setting, or is it gone, or is there some other way to shut off the screen automatically when a call is connected? ( I know, don't leave the phone in my pocket by driving, but looking for something a little more functional here). Thanks!

Proximity sensor problem

During a call, the screen randomly turns on and so the call gets notoriously disconnected because End Call button is getting pressed with a cheek or hair or whatever.
Is there some way to either fix it, or just disable it so the screen remains off during a call, unless Home button is pressed?
I tried several roms and it's always the same.

Proximity Sensor Error?

Whenever I make or receive a call, the screen shows the "incoming" or "outgoing" screen for a second, then the screen turns off.
Upon turning it back on, it turns back off after about half a second and won't turn back on, I tried pressing power and home button, putting my finger over the non-physical buttons at the bottom and applying pressure along the edge of the phone.
This is a major flaw since when I'm making a call and they don't pick up, it stays on the "please leave a message" portion of the call and I am forced to shut the phone off just to continue using it. The same happens when I get an incoming call. The accept and reject buttons don't appear so I have to wait until it rings to call them back. What is the point of I can't simply make calls on a smartphone?
I have already disabled the proximity sensor via the call settings, but it didn't make any difference.
This is very frustrating when I have to make many calls.

Do you have a case on it? The case might be blocking the sensor.. Also, sometimes an app causes problems with the sensor.

Mute randomly activates during calls

I'll be on a call and the other person will suddenly be unable to hear me. This happens with stock and Pure Nexus (running on both elemental and shamu). It doesn't happen regularly. It hasn't happened in weeks, but yesterday it happened twice on one phone call and once on another. I can fix it during the call if I mute and unmute the phone on the display. When the phone mutes itself, the display control doesn't show that mute is active, only I after I press it and "activate" it.
I used to think it might have been my face pressing against the screen, but that can't be it as the screen is off while I'm talking. In order to fix it during a call, I have to turn the screen on first. Has anyone else had this problem?
I had this problem and found call screen lock in the play store (which solved it). It turned out I was somehow tapping mute with my face while on the phone after not tripping the proximity sensor...
It only happened rarely, but you can tell if you might be doing this if your screen occasionally wakes up while on the call without being pulled away from your face (the proximity sensor thinks it is not close to you face intermittently).

Screen Timeout During Calls (speakerphone/bluetooth/headphones)

I use the phone a lot handsfree for work and it bugs me when the screen times out and locks on a handsfree call. I can't then easily mute, unmute, look at call durations, enter digits etc. without interacting with the phone in a clunky manner.
As an example i might be on a long conference call on speakerphone, mute my audio input to get up and walk around a little and then have to quickly unmute. To do this i have to press the side volume button and then the on screen unmute which sounds easy but can make for an awkward second or so of silence.
Basically i want the screen to stay on when in call and the proximity sensor detects it's not against my face.
Samsung has a phone app option for this i remember (keep screen on during calls).
Any suggestions ?

Use a bluetooth earpiece/headset and add that as a trusted device. All the time it is on and connected the phone won't lock. Then just set screen sleep to something more appropriate like 5 minutes..
you could try something like this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ndtsoft.sensor&hl=en
i haven't tried it, but i think it could solve your problem
EDIT: i just tried an app called "WaveUP" and it did the trick. also has a lot of other cool features, as well.

Question Screen Turns OFF on Video Call (Viber)

Hello,
Just wondering if you guys have the same problem.
Phone is updated on 12.5.8.
Just bought for my wife last week
The app we are having trouble with is Viber during Video Calls. Whenever she video calls someone, while it is ringing, the screen turns OFF. Nothing happens even if she double taps the screen or presses the power button. After a few rings and presses on the power button, the screen will turn ON and everything seems back to normal.
I tried video calling via FB messenger and I am not encountering the same issue.
I tried to test the proximity sensor using Viber call and phone call and it is responding well but not 100%. Sometimes when I put in on my ears, the screen doesn't turn OFF. Most of the time, it does.
I also tested via the CIT (Secret Menu in the About Phone>Kernel Version), the result was mixed. If I just put my hand over the sensor, it does not turn to 0.0. It only goes to 0.0 if I put the phone down facing the table and then goes back to 5.0 when I pick it up.
I tried clearing cache, data, uninstalled, reboot then installed viber but the issue still exist.
Here is a video link of the issue I am talking about

Do any of you face the same issue? TIA!
