Does rooting and installing Magisk impact performance and battery life ? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I was just wondering if those who unlocked their bootloader and unlocked their devices then rooted faced any issues and are there any drawbacks as I am a new pixel user ?

Just unlocked the bootloader and rooted my P4 XL last night. So far I haven't noticed any issues.

I haven't seen any evidence that rooted Magisk impacts battery life. Been a pixel user since P1XL.

Battery life is unaffected. You may have problems with banking apps, Google Pay, and that sort of thing from time to time. These can usually be fixed by hiding root/unlocked bootloader but it's any ongoing thing that you have to keep up on. That's it, root is harmless although a power tool that you can use to screw yourself. In case you're not aware: Do your homework before you start flashing. Know the steps you'll follow from beginning to end. Follow them exactly. Have a backup in case you need to restore.

Actually there are special circumstances where magisk can go crazy and chew through your battery but it was largely fixed in v18
For most users it won't affect anything, and for the very few that it does its self inflicted from modifying files that magisk relies on (logd, Daemons, etc)
So no need to worry
Personally I haven't rooted yet, but I'm sure I will once the Dec patch comes out

Issues on marshmallow?

I just got my very first straight from Motorola N6 last week. I did some looking around before hand to make sure I would be able to root (came from ATT note 4 which is unrootable). While I was researching I noticed there are several noticeable issues w Android 6.x on the N6. From your experience, should I take the ota or stay 5.1.1 and root? I won't be able to update via OTA after root right? Thanks.
This should be in Q&A but what issues are you referring to because I don't really have any marshmallow specific issues.
No issues with 6.0.1 on my N6 here either.

I've seen several threads/posts regarding issues w being unable to root as well as problems w speaker distortion so I was wondering if it's a common issue or maybe a couple of isolated incidents...

I've tried out PureNexus and AOSiP and DirtyUnicorn, no issues with any of them other than afwall++ rules don't stick. So if you use a firewall, you might want to wait a little while until an update comes around.
root is pretty simple now with chainfire's systemless root method. Just flash the latest (I think its ver. 2.67) from the marshmallow WIP thread over on the SuperSU forums. It will intelligently detect whether you're running software capable of either systemless (stock android style) or system modding root (most up to date custom roms) I've seen a couple people freak because it bootloops once on them and they immediately come here only to have the device boot up next to them because the new SuperSU.zip is intended to bootloop once or twice while its settings things up. Neat thing about this new systemless root is that you can take an ota as long as you don't let TWRP mount /system as R/W and use the unroot function in the supersu app before installing the ota. (If you ever clear cache in recovery this however won't work because thats where the boot.img backup is stored iirc)
As for speaker distortion I notice you can overdrive the speakers when using equalizers like dolby, beats or viper due to them having a built in amp but with all that stuff off and not maxing out the volume they sound pretty decent really. This wasn't any different in 5.1 so no worries there. There was something that was fixed with slight hardware revision back soon after the phone was released relating to the speakers as well but the 5.1 kernel update helped the pre revisions as well and these changes are carried over to marshmallow.
and as for stuff like cpu cores underclocking and unplugging and speakers going quieter is the kernel lowering these things in order to try and prevent a voltage droop when the battery gets lower causing random reboots that can sometimes be seen in some custom kernels which disable these power-saving measures or don't account for them in some other fashion.
All in all if you like 5.1 you can stay at it. I'm all for people getting their devices going in a way that works and satisfies them. No need to update unless you really want the latest and greatest which honestly is kinda why I bought a nexus in the first place. But with every android update I've ever put on this phone it's just gotten better and better.
No firewalls, my main concern was with speaker issues and not being able to root but looks like maybe just a couple ppl having issues.
Cool stuff man thanks. Took the update my main concern was not being able to root but sounds like I should be good!

Some people are just idiots. Don't use "random internet postings" as evidence.
This is a GOOGLE NEXUS. Root is its middle name.

[Guide]Android System/OS Battery Drain FIX

After Installing Custom Mods and rooting on Oxygen OS I was experiencing a Android System battery Drain .
Also in custom Roms based On OOS I also had the same problem.
I was draining 35-40 percentage of my battery in a charge cycle.
I searched alot past 2-3 days on my phone to see which process is causing this Drain problem.
I found many but stoping them didn't fix it .
Finally today when I found that after SuperSU was installed
It was causing the Drain so I found a fix for this
Fix for all Roms having this problem
-Go to SuperSU app
-Settings menu
-Enable trust system User
-and enable grant permission during boot
-Then put the phone on flight mode and wait for it to cool down.
If this doesn't work
-Try setting default access to grant
-Enable MultiUser access
Hit the thanks button if this helps
Also tell me if this helps in the comments
Remember to follow all steps

Thanks for sharing but both solutions are security risk. Maybe Magisk is solution till SuperSu is fixed (hoping that it IS the culprit).

Try to delete all of the mkv files. That helps for me. No battery drain at all
i would say "kindda" help. cause still android system drains. but, a bit less then before. i would like to see some more days.
I switched to Magisk and drain is still there so reason is something else seemingly. It has something to do with FW/Modem. We all need to deluge OnePlus with requests to fix this mess.
Helps me
My current battery cycle
For me clearing the Google Play Services database solved the battery drain.
Apps,
Google play services
Storage
Manage Space
Clear all data
I then remained on that screen and restarted the phone into recovery without returning to the launcher.
In recovery clear cache only.
Reboot
Since then I have had no problems at all (though I am running complete stock no root)
No data is lost but you will have to add cards to android pay and set a couple of other items when prompted (like default backup account etc).

I mean no disrespect to the OP when posting this..
Isn't setting default root access to "grant" a crazy big security risk? Potentially malicious apps could reboot recovery in the middle of the night, flash some REAL spyware and feed back all your passwords without you knowing and could compromise your online accounts, still have to be installed first or some exploit would have to be found, but it just seems the risks outweigh the benefits.
Are you sure it's not another app you've consistently installed? F2fs? Clean installs + factory resets? Checked your signal strength lately? Wi-Fi + Bluetooth scanning? Facebook/whatsapp/etc installed? Google location history? Different versions of twrp? Titanium backups? Uncheck the the option in android settings to Backup and restore android apps? Installed several versions of older supersu?[ R4, r3, r2, r1, r2d2?]Franco kernel? [HIGHLY RECOMMEND. All the other kernels I've tried leave my device pretty warm, but franco keeps it cool), or Anoint your phone with luxurious oils, passionately bathe it and whisper sweet things into its microphone? [References here->

I just wanted to make my thoughts known, some newer users to root might come by, try and follow these steps hoping for SOT gains, and needlessly compromise their phone in the process.
If you persist in believing cf supersu is the root cause (that's a knee slapper!!) I think trying another supersu might be a better way to go than ticking all those options. Say like, phh's or CWM.
Again, I mean no disrespect to the OP. Just my thoughts.
Forget about SuperSU, You guys have no idea what causes the andriod OS drain after flashing.... So stop blaming kernel, SuperSU, gplay services etc.. The answer is out there in forums.. Feel free to browse and search for it...

I saw you also sprayed ppl with their own bs on Blu spark thread. All i can say is I roam those forums a lot myself but haven't come across a clear stating about these issues (apart from the SELinux shenanigans). So what about you flood us with your great wisdom instead big boy?

Here you go:
Apparently you claim that you roam this forums and yet you didn't find the answer. Interesting claims.
Anyways here is your answer since even you didmt even fi d answer after roaming..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811&page=5
Read it carefully though.. Explains why andriod OS drain battery more in first days (Not cycles) after flashing rom.. More apps, more the drain..
Tl;Dr for lazy people out there... Andriod os drain is present because Google itself has changed how andriod works..
On side note, I don't spread bs.. I just put my observations. It is upto people to fix it and accept the truth or get emo over it..

I read this post from Rovo long ago, and I of course was taking about abnormal drains they were occurring long after reinstalls or new ROM flashes. It's well known, the rebuilding of caches etc.. Anyone complaining before this incompressible period should be treated like you do. Also, still thanx for minding sharing something at least and on a SECOND side note, read again, I never said you spread bs, pretty much the other way around, i was just suggesting you enlighten us instead of "spraying people with their own bs" like for example, on the Blu spark thread where I know you were putting whiners back in place. Cheers.
I am using magisk, so what about me?

Are there any major caveats with the XZ1C?

I've read through reviews, and this looks like a great phone, and the fact that it is a small phone makes it better. But will I be able to have at least root & TWRP without any major downsides?
The camera apparently loses quality, but is there a Gcam HDR+ yet?
If you stay on stock rom, the camera quality will stay the same if you use the DRM-fix.
You'll loose the ability to do OTA updates, tho.

The DRM fix made by sToRm// works on any firmware (next release) and any XZ device.
The DRM that sony installed is broken when you unlock your bootloader and sToRm//'s fix enables it. So there is no loss of quality with the camera, it's exactly as stock. The DRM is fixed or broken, the camera is fixed or broken, there is no half way 'dodgy' pictures that people imagine.
Yes, you won't receive any OTA updates if your phone is rooted, but there is Xperiafirm and Newflasher, to keep you up to date. Then reflash with sToRm//'s app and you're good to go.
In the old days you wanted to root your phone to control all the battery eating apps, but Google/Sony have been aware of the drive to extend battery life for a long time now and with a few exceptions, changing the configuration of the services will probably make your battery worse not better. The battery life on the XZ1 compact is the best of any phone I've had, straight out the box, no tweaking required.
The only other main driver for rooting your phone was to be able to customise it and change the framework colours, but you can do that without root now.
Be sure you want to root you phone for the right reasons, not because it's fashionable, or because you want Xposed installed so that when you press the volume the flash comes on.
There's a chance you'll break your phone in the process, so is what you want to root your phone for important enough to have to buy a new phone for?
I'm not trying to put you off, but if you read sToRm//'s thread, there's loads of people getting into a real mess trying to root when they don't even know what ADB is. They've unlocked their phones, broken the camera, but now stuck unable to get the fix to work. Don't go there.
If you want the Google +HDR camera, check out russel5's [XZ1C,G8441,Lilac]AOSP_8.1 rom, which comes with it baked in

There are a few apps that require root that I'd like to use, and a lot of tweaks via TWRP flashing. The main reason really is underclocking the XZ1C, because I really don't need that much power, even if the battery life is already insane.
Thanks a lot though!

Is it still worth rooting my phone?

Good morning (or evening according to timezones)
I have recently purchased a new Note8. Even though the performance is mostly great, I sometimes get lag/stutters and the battery is not that great ( I can get about 3h SOT), but if I don't have my charger with me, there's no chance to get home with the phone still on.
My question is if it is still worth it to root the phone and put a custom Rom on it. I have looked through the various custom rom threads and I am tempted to flash one.
However, my main concern is the banking applications (saw that some don't work anymore after rooting).
At the moment I am on the latest official rom (with the october security patch). I mention that I have no warranty (phone bought from other country), so that shouldn't be an issue.
Any thought please? I have been missing from the android scene for a long time, went IOS there for a while, so I am not sure how to proceed.
Thank you in advance to anyone kind enough to read all this
Bogdan
My Note 8 is the first Samsung phone I haven't rooted as I didn't feel the need to! It's quick and my battery lasts all day (I do have it on medium power saving) and have no problems at all. The Device Maintenance seems to very efficiently clean things up for me when it does get a bit sluggish and I do a restart about every couple of days! I'm very satisfied with my SM-9500 256 GB dual SIM from China! I charge wirelessly every night and use my phone as my bedside clock ...

Thank you for your reply. I also use the device maintenance and reboot it occasionally, but battery life seems to he a hit and miss for me. I do keep the phone at max resolution and with a lot of sync on, but what would be the point of having a powerful device if we don't use it
I am also a bit surprised as to the low number of custom roms available. Not complaining or anything, but looking back to my old note 2 experience, there was far more enthusiasm at that time. Though android did get better since then
No benifit... after rooting you can havw viper sound modes (most imp) if you are music lover ..i haven't found anything interesting after rooting. I use stock room with no app removed and only viper4 android install. So there no point of rooting

Thank you. I'll probably leave the OS alone for now
usually i always end up not rooting for the first 4-6 months due to warranty stuff.
But the moment i rooted, i've gained at least a 20-25% increase in battery life with the usual control one can have.
If it's for cosmetics, dont need root anymore for that. not much on exposed, things like Good Lock make it stay away from root edits.
I personally root for a few apps that i use, which some of them have better features when on root. and also for debloating.
Unless you are a developer or a tech hobbyist, I don't see the point in rooting current android devices as they work perfectly fine straight out the box.
Well, when rooting you gain total control, and can run some nice and useful apps that require root, I like viper4A, but as you pointed out, some apps do not run on rooted devices, banking and streaming apps among others, and of course, there is the one very important component that you loose for ever, secure folder

The Basics

Greetings ya'll, it's been some time since I've rooted, etc. TBH really don't want to dig through page after page for a few simple answers to my questions. First after rooting how secure and can I use Google Pay? Can I use simple banking apps? Plain and simple security in using banking apps and secure work-type apps is a priority for me. I remember several years ago some of these were an issue when rooting. LOL the last time I rooted was my Nexus 5 lol, then jumped to the infamous unrootable Pixel 2 XL Verizon version. Thanks in advance.
I'll ask the same! I do not want to change my system/reinstall OS every month. Getting too old for that. And what would be the battery life compared to the stock?
May need to install safteynet module in Magisk. Other than that I have no issues at all. Citi banking always alerts me that my devices is "Rooted and some features may not be available" but it still allows me to access my account.

Battery life does not simply improve by rooting. That is up to the Rom and Kernel used. When rooting you're patching the original stock rom so the way your pixel behaves now is how it will continue to behave after root. You will also still have to install a new image every month if you wish to keep up with security updates.
The rooting process for all Pixels is exactly the same. You can follow the instructions in my Pixel 4a 5G guide; just use the appropriate files for your device (coral, not bramble). The only exception is that it doesn't matter what version of Magisk you use, although I would recommend 24 or newer, as the ability to patch inactive slot has been re-implemented.
Appreciate the link ... Going to get started on this....
