Impossible to connect VPN/Use NPM (Firewall blocking) ? - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have a very annoying bug which is really strange when I use my mobile data and do a tethering.
It is impossible to connect to a VPN, I have a connection timeout error.
I am a NodeJS developer, and it's impossible to download any dependencies when tethering. I have a connection unreachable BUT it works when I download NodeJS on termux and use the package manager.
I am suspecting that the problem comes from an UDP port blocking but I'm not really sure.
I am absolutely sure that the problem comes from my phone. (I've tried to use an other SIM on my phone and it still doesn't work, but if I put my SIM on an other phone, it works)
I did a factory reset twice, relocked my bootloader, but the problem still remains.
Did you have already experienced this problem and how did you manage to solve it ?
Thank you

3G Connection Problem after ROM flashing

Hey!
each time I flashed a new rom, the setup of 3g internet doenst work anymore.
i entered all data like they should be, but it doenst work.
after a while, sometimes hours, sometimes a day or longer the connect works again without doing anything.
I dont understand why!
anyone got a tip for me?
Ok, lets get more information...
the interessting thing is, that if i do a full backup of my system when mobile internet works, and restore it after a flash (or hard reset), interworks works immediately.
when not, no internet for uncertain times
Are you sure connection setup runs on startup. I mean you're internet settings must be setuped before it works and this starts automaticely some time after you connect to your phone network.
some time ago i tried it aner it didnt work.
now i tried again and now it works =)
Still I am very curious why I cannot change the settings manually...

Active Data connection but no connection to Internet

Hi,
I've got a problem and don't know what to do.
My phone is reporting a data connection (and reports that it's connected) but every program accessing the Internet fails with an error message that there is no connection.
Does anyone know whether there is a tool to check for an actual connection or maybe get a log of what exactly the phone is doing?
Any help to solve this would also be appreciated
Yes, the connection has worked before

Are still able to get email or update weather? If so I suggest uninstalling and then reinstalling your internet browser(s). Have you tried a cleanup utility like ClearTemp or SKTools? That may help.
No, I actually couldn't use anything that was using the data connection. It all failed, stating that there was no data connection.
The only thing that (kind of) "repaired" it was doing a hard reset...
Fortunately, I haven't experienced the problem since

usb host, conectivity loss and fingergprint swipes

Hello,
I have three problems with my phone.
1. USB host, a limited version of OTG, as I understand, works only if I plug the USB device before the phone boots. If I connect it after the phone has booted, it doesn't work. Restarting to get a USB keyboard working isn't nice, as you can imagine.
2. If I'm in an area with weak mobile signal, causing the phone to lose conectivity intermittently, it simply refuses to connect after some time, no matter how good the signal is. It has sound interruptions in this no signal mode, and eventually reboots on its own to fix it.
3. Some apps can intercept swipes on the fingerprint sensor and assign them to actions. This doesn't seem to work.
I tried different firmwares and lineage, but those three bugs inisted appearing. I'm not an advanced android developer, but I suppose this means the problems are in the oem or another partition.
My previsible questions are:
Has someone else observed one of more of these behaviours?
Found any fix?
If any dev is reading, what should I do to try to fix those? I already code, just not for android. Alternatively, should I ask this question in another area?
I can't send the phone in warranty.
Thanks.

VPN connected but IP is still transparent

Hi community,
Seeking help here. I have never had any issues with regards to VPN connection on my note 9. I have subscription with CyberGhost VPN however I also have free versions of Thunder VPN and X-VPN.
The issue which occurred today that I cannot fix. I am able to connect using both the paid/free VPNs mentioned above, however once connected, my real IP is still transparent.
When I open the 'key lock' android system VPN management popup, I can see that no data is sent or received even though I have surfed web, watched videos etc. I used ipleak.net to confirm the when connected to VPN my IP transparent.
When I restart the device and connect vpn, it works normally i.e. ip not is transparent. But after some time it automatically becomes transparent again. Power saving is never on. I have to restart device again for VPN to work normally again, albeit a short time.
Anyone encountered similar issue and/or have any solution?
I am having the same issue as well, first everything worked fine and suddenly vpn is not working anymore although it says it is connected. I am using Cyberghost as well but tried other software with the same effect (connects normally but no data goes through the vpn connection)
Haven't found a solution up till now, it is very annoying.
Where did you buy your note 9?
Mine is Australian version from Optus. No solution so far. I contacted samsung and they told me to do factory reset.. haven't tried that yet. So annoying!
Hmm ok yes i saw that too as a probable solution when people with older Samsung devices had a problem like this but factory reset i only want to do as a last resort because it's going to be a haggle to set everything right again. If i do it and it works i will reply again.
My one was bought in Thailand by the way and model number is SM-N960F/DS
Same model as yours except not DS. It seems to be a software issue. Don't know what has triggered this. It was working just fine.
It must have been triggered by the latest software update because my nephew in the Netherlands has the same issue when he tried to use the vpn just now. It worked after rebooting the phone and then his connection dropped after 10 minutes and now his vpn connection isn't working anymore.
So three Note 9 phones all bought in a different country and region have the same issue, weird that this problem hasn't come up on forums more unless the cyberghost app broke our vpn capabilities..
Oh ok that is interesting. I tried other free vpns also with same result. But I was using cyberghost before this problem...
I really don't want to do factory reset.
Same issue in Canada
I am in Canada and I'm having the same issue. What I have found, is it if I download a DNS changer, and I change the DNS, once in awhile it starts working again. But this is completely unreliable.
This seems to have been an issue for a while and for a business marketed phone, it's quite perplexing that Samsung/Google have not dealt with this issue yet.
I got a temporary solution from cyberghost. It's requires setting up L2TP vpn connection. It's not as fast but it does the trick for now. I noticed from my searches this has been an issue since Samsung S8...hopeless!
Is this a Samsung problem or an Android problem? Samsung is telling me to send my Note 9 in for repair bit I am not convinced there is anything they can do. I have tried a factory reset but it was of no help.
I guess deleting all VPN profiles from device but very one will do a thing
Did the latest samsung update but still doesn't work. Any solutions?
The only solution that worked for me is to set up vpn manually.
Add a new device at Cyberghost account management and manually enter the pre-shared key, username and password given and choose ipsec protocol and on your device choose L2TP/IPSEC PSK.
Then you have to connect to the VPN there instead of the Cyberghost App and you will have full vpn functionality although slower than the app which is using OpenVPN or Ikev2 protocol but it's better then nothing.
I use OpenVPN for Android and under Advanced you need to set 'Use VPN for All apps except' and set route all traffic over VPN.
This did change somewhere in Oreo, it didn't used to be like this.
betternet vpn works a treat. no issues with transparency 48hrs after reboot.
PIA works without issues.

Cannot connect J7 Prime with 8.1 stock to router

Hello guys.
Here is the situation.
I have installed the 8.1 update and everything was fine till it no longer worked.
The device is rooted, with Magisk and TWRP.
The phone does connect to the router but it shows a message "Internet may not be available". This message always is appearing but sometimes, even with this message, there is a very poor connection for a few minutes then it dies again (the "internet may not be available" message is ALWAYS on).
Steps attempted:
1) Forgetting and recreating the connection
2) Changing the router channels from 1 all the way to 14
3) Changing in the router settings the "authentication method" from WEP all the way to all types of WPA and WPA2, with many different encryptions.
4) Changed the WIFI password in the router settings
5) Reset the router to factory settings
6) Cleared cache on the device via apps AND via TWRP
7) Tried to change from DHCP to Static BOTH in the router settings and advanced connection settings on the device.
8) Tried changing the DNS on the device and the router, simultaneously and separately.
Funny things:
1) the phone connects to other AP's without a problem.
2) other devices connect to the router which the phone refuses to connect.
I have no idea what else I can possibly do. The only thing I haven't tried yet is resetting the phone, which I REALLY don't want to do and I refuse to believe that there is no solution for it.
I have searched for many, many hours for a solution but very few people have this problem and nobody could resolve it as yet.
This thing is really infuriating me and I am about to shoot this thing with a 12 gauge slug. Seriously.

shotgun solution sounds good for me
Flash the stock kernel to solve this problem, but will be unrooted.
Flash Oxygen Kernel then flash latest Magisk to be rooted.
Thanks for the answer. Is that something you've experienced before? I can't believe that this bug (or whatever it is) requires flashing stuff! I read some forums but most people are having this issue with the S8 and S9 running Oreo 8.x. And nobody came up with a solution. Not even Samsung.

yes I have experienced this. magisk changes something in your kernel and the only way to get it back is to flash the stock kernel through TWRP. it won't factory reset your phone because you are only changing the kernel (boot.img). You can also opt to uninstall magisk as well using its uninstaller which requires flashing. Flashing doesn't always mean it will factory reset your phone.
certain versions of magisk is appropriate for Oreo while the older versions break the networks like you mentioned. what works for me is 17.1 and above. I prefer the latest oxygen kernel because I can throttle the CPUs for gaming.
Just to make it simpler for you. Had you not installed magisk (root), I am pretty sure everything will work the way it was on your stock ROM.
