Even if my phone is unlocked and the screen is on, I still have to look at it and hit confirm after I tap it to the terminal.

I guess with fingerprint it's much faster since I don't have to lift the phone up since my finger is on the scanner. I want to say it wasn't like that when I first got there pixel 4. I want to say an update shortly changed the behavior

Then it's just because of the level of security used for Gpay. I don't personally mind, my face unlock is lightning. I came from my Pixel 2 XL and the face unlock has been faster with a higher rate of success than the fingerprint scanner on my old Pixel.

For vending machines it's alright since it's face up but those flat terminals I have to tap, lift, verify, confirm and then re-tap. I know it's little but when I first got the phone it didn't have that extra confirmation since the phone was already unlocked.

If my phone is unlocked I do not have to look at it again when attempting to tap and pay with Gpay.
Just got back from my local 7 eleven and I used my Gpay to see how mine behaved and paying using the actual Gpay app, I did not have to scan my face again. Also I completely forgot about the Gpay shortcut I have enabled and once unlocked, I can instantly bring up my credit/debit cards and pay from any screen or app by holding the power button. See my screenshot below.

I have a Fossil Gen 5 and I've tried enabling GP on the watch but it's annoying to me since it needs authorization. Every time I do anything on the watch I have to unlock it or GP won't work. How do you do it conveniently?

I have a gen 5 Carlyle too. What authorization are you talking about? Setting up a card for the watch takes several steps but once it's done, Google Pay is just a swipe and tap away for me. I turn on the screen (I keep "always-on screen" option on and tilt-to-wake off), swipe down, and tap the Pay icon. My default card pops up and I just put it close to the tap the pay area. Even quicker is putting Google Pay on a watchface but I don't use it enough to do that. I would rather have something like battery, weather, or Google Health info.

What happens to me is that I need to put on an authorization method on the watch. Either a pin or password and anytime I use the watch, even if it's not for GP, it asks for the pin code or pwd. Even if I go to check notifications I have to put in my pin. I don't use always on but I do use tilt to wake. You think I need to change that in order for it to be easier to use? I'm going to check Reddit now too see what they suggest or if anyone is having issues like I am.

It's very annoying. I think one of the problems is that I use my metal watchband a lot and it's kind of loose on my wrist, purposely so. So it might think it's off my wrist when it slides around. Seems like others are having the same issue but I'll look into it further. I have always used my phone for GP anyway so it's not a huge deal but it would be cool to be able to use it.

It being loose most likely the issue. I have a metal band and although I don't work out with it, I keep it snug enough that it doesn't lock yet loose enough that it can slide a little.

You have an app looking for location. Pretty normal.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same issue in Nexus 5 running Stock Rooted Lollipop.
Security - Smart unlock - trusted places....
This is what you looking for!
I am having the same issue. As soon as I unlock the phone, the GPS icon comes on and goes away very quickly. It has nothing to do with Smart Lock. Some type of app is requesting location upon unlock...
Go to location in settings, it tells you all the apps searching for location!
I have the same thing. I'm sure it's an app just don't know what.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Thought it was smart unlock as well but I disabled the location portion of it and it is still happening. Still looking.. Will report back...
So I turned off access to all apps that were listed in the location settings and still its being sent. The only way it stopped is turning off location totally. I'm returning my unit Monday any way as I now want the 64gb version and will be monitoring the threads until my 64gb ships..

Just chiming in to let you know that my Galaxy S3 does the same thing as well. I don't think it's a Nexus problem or even a Lollipop problem, just think that's what Android does.
It happpens to me too on my Lollipop Nexus 5.
I wonder if all of you have Google Fit installed... maybe it is related to that app
Mine also does this. With GPS turned completely off. I disabled Fit.
I even downloaded voodoo carrier iq detector because it kind of reeks of that.
This battery has me ready to switch phones. I hate the thought of it but I am getting 3-3.5 hours SOT with everything disabled (location, auto backup pics, only apps installed are battery/wakelock detectors).
It wouldn't be so bad but I see too many screenshots of people doubling my SOT without disabling anything

I'm curious as to how it will interface with wear. If when they go out of range or (preferably) the victim is able to make a small gesture the phone locks and can't be unlocked until the wearable is reunited AND the password are re-entered. To me that seems like the ideal.
Then again I would love for smart lock to do a better job of using relative signal strength of estimating how far away the wearable and would automatically lock them outside that zone of control.
Ultimately, I think these two things are sort of right there and just need to be brought together.
Got it on my 5.1 Nexus 6.
Not working that reliably at the moment.
When set on the table and the screen turns off, it doesn't lock automatically...

I haven't noticed any at all although you'd think it would have to use some.... I guess everything is a compromise in some sort of way.
In the last few days I've noticed that when turning on my screen that I'm forced to put in my PIN, which it says it always does after a reboot/startup. But I didn't reboot the phone myself.
Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder if this has anything to do with the Contacts app issue for int'l XP phones using a T-Mobile SIM card, or something else? It may just be that an app I have was malfunctioning (I did have issues with Chrome earlier right before this new auto reboot occurred), and that's what may have caused it.
Please let me know what you think. Also, PLEASE mention in your post which carrier you have, and also which region you got your phone from. For example, my int'l XP is from Hong Kong, so on the box there's a "ZH", which I guess is the Hong Kong version. You may also have an "HK" too. The Taiwan one says "TW" I believe.
Thanks!
Haven't experienced this issue. I'm using an x performance f8132 hk version.
I just experienced this for the first time yesterday. I updated Playstation Video, which now has the ability to download purchased content. I was downloading my movies to my SD card (35 of them) and the phone rebooted several times. It hasn't happened since. I'm on AT&T with a HK sourced device. I'm thinking this app update may have been causing my problem. I'll follow up in the next few days if I experience any other reboots.

Ok cool. Yeah you have the same one I do. It's marked "ZH & EN", but I believe ZH is still the Hong Kong version.

Hey Augie,
Hmm ok. You might be right!
I thought it was because I was using one of those apps that lets you enable "Night Vision" for easier nighttime reading. Some kind of issue with the "screen overlay". So I disabled "screen overlay" for that app and SO FAR it's been fine. You wouldn't happen to have an app like that would you (i.e. Blue Light Filter For Eye Care, Lux, etc)??
I didn't use Playstation app. Just disabled it actually, so I don't know if your problem and mine was the same? Mine would just reboot randomly, never repeatedly over and over at the same time.
Yeah mine is from Hong Kong too. Says ZH on the side, but I believe someone on here said that's still China.
Yes please do. I will too on Monday.
Thanks!!
No screen overlays here. I've used the phone for all kinds of things today without replicating the problem. I'm guessing a certain amount of non-response time from something running triggers a reset. I'll report if it reoccurs.

Augie,
Ok. That's good. I had also cleared not all the caches for all my apps but the "preferences", which is a setting in Apps menu in Settings. Then I rebooted. Not sure if that helped but I think for me it was the Screen Overlay issue. But it COULD'VE also been Playstation for all I know? Then again, this had been happening for last 3-5 days, so if Playstation app update just came in yesterday, then I doubt it was that.
Thanks! Please do. I will too on Monday.

I uninstalled 360 from my phone several days ago as even though it worked on the Z5 and Z3 (and initially it SEEMED to work on my 1st XP), I can see it no longer is working on the XP, so it's not that.
Since clearing all the preferences on all the apps and also disabling the screen overlay on my one "night vision" app, the problem has so far not reoccurred any more (knock on wood!). I am trying out a different app very similar to 360 though on my phone called Hibernation Manager. I'm going to test it tonight/overnight to see how it does, and will report here tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath, but can't hurt to try it. Earlier today I gave it a good 2 hours and the percentage stayed the same during that time (100%), so there's potential I guess.
Update: Forget what I said above. See this updated post instead.

Hi all,
I've looked all over but haven't seen anything yet, but is Samsung pay favorite card swipe up not working? Also when launching, it shows the old navigation icons at the bottom. So currently, I'm not able to quickly access my card to make a payment. As a cludgy workaround, I have it on my edge launcher and still have to click through to my card. Any other suggestions? It's also grayed out when using the fingerprint sensor to open.
The swipe up works just fine on mine. And yes it shows the old navbar.

It's the latest. But it's definitely not a pie release as it still shows navigation buttons at the bottom. I'm apparently hooked on the new navigation that every time I use pay it it's sad to have to actually press the home button to leave.

So curious what you find. Samsung pay have me extra smug points when the cashier says they don't take apple pay.
I finally figured it out: I didn't have a favorite card selected. Now it shows up when I'm on my home screen and that home button swipe, since it's on the home screen, doesn't interfere since I'm already home and there little swipe up icon (see picture) for the card is finally there. But it only shows on the home screen and not the others.

I love getting the "we only accept XXX here". I look at the cashier and just tell them to push the credit card button and to watch, done it with both my phone and gear s3. They are always surprised and ask what it was that i was using since they've never seen that before. Mine doesn't work with natwest. With Xposed you can make faceunlock work like a fp tho. I also saw someone say it's down to the banks so they need to be hassled about it.
I am a little frustrated with this on my pixel 4 XL.
I bank with HSBC, Metrobank, Natwest, Capital one and Barclays.
I gave them all 1* reviews as an incentive to fix it.
I also sent emails to the developer contact options, and asked all my friends to do the same. Hopefully this will speed them up.
So far the only one I know who's working on it is HSBC.

1 star reviews is hardly going to change anything

I am a little frustrated with this on my pixel 4 XL.
So far the only one I know who's working on it is HSBC.

Hong-Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation - a Chinese company. In China it is reported they will soon insist on facial recognition to match a person's Photo ID card before anyone can use a smartphone. So they are ahead of the game.

That's exactly my point, if you don't think hundreds of 1* reviews won't make a company think about speeding things up, that seems awfully strange.

Not strange at all.
Why invest time to rush something through that only a tiny proportion of users will use.
Pixels aren't that popular so a lot of 1 star reviews is hardly going to make a dent in their ratings.
No point rushing it through when entering a password takes 2 seconds to enter.
Some may also hold back until Google release face unlock with eyes open

Google is forcing it on DEVs, after this year if they update their app they will have to add it if they still want to support finger print unlock. I've been using the Xposed Finger Face on my root Pixel 4 XL and love it.

Yes still no pixel face unlock.
Two things though. Firstly, despite the name, it is NOT a Chinese company, it is registered in the UK. The bank was established when HK was a British colony (and a bit of Shanghai was an International concession). Secondly they might as well be though, they have just now announced they support the Chinese abrogation of human rights in HK.
Hence why I have switched to Nationwide, which apparently does work with the Pixel 4 btw.
More a reply to my own post, but the Nationwide app works flawlessly with my Pixel 4's gave unlock.
Face unlock STILL doesn't work in the UK for me with Lloyd's bank or Argos. Very disappointing.
Face unlock works with RBS.
First Direct is still a no and I don’t think they are even planning to do it.

Last pass password manager supports face unlock so at least you don't have to enter a password for any apps that don't support it natively.
As does Bitwarden.
My 3XL stopped working and I just got the 4XL yesterday. I use HSBC for my business banking and I now have to carry around the little security keypad device and generate a pass code every time I want to log into my account...cant even use a set password.
Well, in a few months I will move on from the Pixel 4 XL but it is shocking just how few major apps support Android's latest biometric API which would allow seamless use of fingerprint or facial scan for authentication.
Just seen this thread and a year later it seems that not much has changed. Nationwide works fine with Face-Unlock but still not on Halifax, HSBC and many others.
