Anyone checking out that S20 Ultra? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I know Samsung is not popular here and at the risk of bringing up a sore subject, that phone looks pretty tempting. I came back to the Pixel a couple years ago after straying briefly and swore I'd never have another phone. I love my P4XL. Having said that, again I'm tempted to try this beast. It looks like a no holds barred state of the art device if you can handle (or maybe like) the Samsung UI. I'll probably stick with my Pixel, the next beta will start soon. Thanks for checking in.

I'm curious how one ui will run with a 120hz screen

I would if they had a stock Android version and bootloader unlocked.

That would be awesome, won't happen though. Always a compromise.

Yep, locked bootloader means I never even gave it a second glance, that's a hard deal breaker that no feature set can overcome. Unless of course they somehow figure out how to make naked supermodels that live to serve me pop out of it at a push of a button; I'd grudgingly give up root for that. Grudgingly, mind you, it wouldn't be an easy choice, I'd agonize over it.

Some years ago I remember that Samsung sold through Google store Samsung devices with stock Android. Galaxy S4 or S5, don't remember exactly.

Since getting the 4XL the Note10+ rests in the drawer.

Exynos F models are SIM unlocked international versions with unlockable bootloader to comply with international laws. Model numbers usually end with F or FD (dual-sim). You're pretty much stuck buying at full retail (or more) on the grey market to get them in the United States.
For reference, check out the XDA forums for the Galaxy S10+.

Nah, since the Note 8 they do the wait a week and all that other crap, hardly what I would called unlocked when half the time you're in can't unlock jail.

I remember the play store editions, they had an s4 and a couple other phones. I didn't get one because you had CM and some other good roms too, shoman's stuff was the best. I haven't even rooted the last couple phones I've had.

I may go through with the refund and exchange, but I may just keep it. The actual physical differences don't bother me as much as just knowing I got the old version. I'm still really tempted by the HTC M8 GPE though XD

If you're addicted to flashing and using custom roms, you should surely scrap your plans of buying a M8... Believe me, the development wound't be as good as it is over here... Besides that, I really don't think a $300+ premium is worth paying for a m8 over the Nexus :silly: But that's my opinion though

I'm not big into flashing, but I always root.
But it is true, no other device will ever get more development support than the Nexus line.
I'm not to big on adding $250 to my order for the M8 either (I ordered the wireless charger), but I feel the S801 would get the speed on par with my iPhone 5s. Right now, the Nexus is just a smidge slower on ART.
It'll take a little more thought though, and I do have time.

I own both Nexus 5 and iPhone 5s. I find my Nexus more responsive and fluid. I use nova launcher though and it's liquidity smooth compared to the iPhone launcher. Just got to experiment with roms and kernels till you find the sweet spot. I recommend elemental for performance and Battery life. Really makes for a nice smooth experience. I'm on dalvik too. Remember the iPhone loads up cached images of apps before the app even loads. This makes it look like the app opened up really fast but it's just an image until the app actually loads. Sneaky bastards trying to make iOS look like it's fast. Open an app and try to interact with it instantly and watch how you can do anything for some time.

Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition

I, like some others on the internet, feel like it's very possible that there won't be a Galaxy S5 GPE. Here's why:
-Samsung has hinted they wish to use their own OS (Tizen) and are trying to ditch Android. I don't know how far away this is, but with continually locking and customizing down their platform it appears they are purposefully moving away from the openness of Android. With them being slated as a manufacturer of an Android Wear device, this occurrence of ditching Google could very well be far off or nonexistent. I've only read a couple articles about this possibility, and it somewhat makes sense.
-Samsung won't move to software buttons. Google has long since pushed for software buttons on Android phones, and now most OEMs are following Google's "suggestions".
Samsung, on the other hand, has stubbornly stayed with hardware buttons (which I'm perfectly fine with XD)
-It hasn't been announced yet. The M8 GPE was announced and went on sale about three weeks ago. The S5 was announced 2 months ago, and there's been no mention of a GPE. It's possible it could come out at Google I/O, but it doesn't make sense why Samsung would wait so long after their biggest Android competitor already released their GPE.
-There are lots of hardware features to integrate. I'm not sure that Google would let Samsung integrate the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor into the stock skin.
Although this post may seem pretty negative, I really hope the GPE S5 is released. I loved stock on the S4, and it would be a real shame if they stopped with the GPE phones.
What are your thoughts? Will they pull through and surprise us all with the S5 at I/O? Or will it remain a distant dream?

They announced they will be making tizen phones, but they will still make android phones as well. From what I read, it didn't sound like their flagship would be tizen based any time soon, and the tizen phones might be in developing countries. This is based off one article I read a few days ago. New/different info may be available now.

I think it's all speculation at this point, but Samsung seems not to be nearly as devoted to Google as other Android OEMs.

Cool thanks! They'll turn into another Nokia (except with Android on the high end, not low end).
I think the S4 GPE was a success, so it seems silly why they wouldn't give it another go.

There is no Galaxy S5 GPE yet. This is only speculation.
On the S4 GPE, you couldn't change display settings like you could on the stock one (Cinema/Photography/Adapt Display).
There was only the stock calibration. I'm sure there were and are kernel mods for it, though.

I don't think so, carriers are the ones who don't care about the users. Samsung promised, "in three months", and they delivered. 4.3 in late september and KK in late january.
But to keep it ontopic, if we don't see a GPe during I/O they may release it a bit later. HTC launched it earlier because they're desperate to get some attention for the shiny turd...

Poll/discussion: Replace your N5 with the OnePlus One?

Not sure whether this will come to India.
But if it does, at a good pricing (similar to USD or maybe slightly more), I am surely going to regret buying Nexus 5 just a few weeks ago.
Anyway. I am not switching devices for next 2 years or so. I love my Nexus 5 quite a lot.

If CyanogenMod gives more updates for the OnePlus One than Google for the N5, then the OnePlus One is a huge win.

Android 5.0 Lollipop - Nexus 7 3G/4G/LTE

Hello Community!
Is it only me, or is everyone annoyed that our Nexus 7 Tables (2012/2013) Mobile version still have not received the upgrade?
Can't find any info on the web regarding this...
Anyone know why Google takes so much time?
I think the devs are very busy because they need to fix a lot of buggs on the not 3G 4G versions see Android 5.0.1 and Googles priority is also on the new devices
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9195 mit Tapatalk
Maybe, but over a month?
But the only thing different is the 3g radio. How difficult can it be to make a lollipo driver for it? Everything else is common for both 3g and wifi versions.
My neighbour has an LG G3 who just got the Lollipop update today, on 4g. I'm still waiting for the 2012 3g Nexus 7 update I won't buy another nexus device. What's the value in it?
The problem isn't with the mobiles but with tablets. I have a nexus 4 and just got the 5.0.1 update, still with the 4.4.4 on the nexus 7 2012 3G. Maybe Santa will bring a gift...
Στάλθηκε από το Nexus 4 μου χρησιμοποιώντας Tapatalk
Would the tablet work, if we flashed an image from the WiFi version?
Obviously the radio and 3g won't work - But I don't use those anyway.
Would the tablet function?
I think we'll never see any 5.0.x release on our N7, since 5.1 seems to be scheduled for February... Google seems so busy fixing bugs in Lollipop that I think cellular enabled nexus tablets won't receive any major updates soon.
On the one hand, it's annoying not to receive updates quickly, but in my opinion it is better to wait a little more and enjoy a stable operating system: for people with the WiFi only version, 5.0 was terrible, but with the latest update the situation improved a lot. I'm looking forward to knowing more about 5.1...
Anyway, I'm happy that Google is really supporting our old N7, and spending time in dedicated bug fixing.

Yes, I consider the 2012 Nexus 7 "old" too. It came out just 6 months after the Galaxy Nexus, and that phone hasn't had official support in over a year (it never officially got Kit Kat). So I agree, I'm thankful that Google is still supporting the original Nexus 7. I'd like it even better if the 3g version was updated too, but I have the WiFi version, so lack of new factory images for the 3g version doesn't affect me directly.

Whereas Apple on the other hand do and have updated their old iPhone 4s, iPad 2 (Both 2011 devices) + their iPad mini (2012 device) with the very latest IOS8+
The way I see it is this; if the hardware can support it why not update your customers software and keep them loyal. If its a case of it being a huge financial burden to optimise their software to make it work on inadequate hardware then fair enough.
If apple are prepared to update older hardware, then so should Google and you should encourage it rather than shoot down anyone that suggests otherwise and criticise them for buying hardware which they might only be able to afford; or are you suggesting we just lavish the rich with refinements?

You pay a lot for apple devices, and that price contain future upgrades. Software develop costs a lot. If you buy top devices you get updates for almost 2 years, and that is not bad. If you buy a 50 bucks smatphone probably you never get an upgrade... So only google upgrades cheap devices, so why blame them? Also the sources are open so every developer can made new roms.
_____________________________________Read more write less and be smart
It costs a lot of money and a lot of time to update a device. Google geht no money if they produce an update.
And Apple is a different story. a device from Apple costs three times more than a nexus 7.the Hardware is near identical. nexus7 has a nvidia tegra chip from 2011 and the other nexus use qualcom. so they need more Teams to develop.
Google is a company that need money to work, develop and produce products. i was wondered that they bring out Android 5 for the first nexus7. So if the tilapia get an update....wonderfull, if not ....also OK.
I recall reading a lot of articles and I believe even a quote from a Google employee saying the 3G/LTE models would be getting 5.0 in early December but here we are in January with not a peep from anybody about when it's coming.
Is there any news about Android 5 on 3G version??? It's been about two months now. Anyone?
Android 5.0.2 factory images for Nexus 7 Mobile (2013 and 2012)
Android 5.0.2 factory images for Nexus 7 Mobile (2013 and 2012).
If people have working 2012 models on kitkat (without much lag), might want to wait and find out how other people's reaction to it.
I just installed it. For some reasons, a signature mismatch prevented me from flashing the bootloader, but after a couple of attempts I just skipped that, since my 3G N7 already had the version included with Lollipop (4.23).
I'll let you know my first impressions soon

so hard to find info on this. i may be in the market for a new phone but still haven't upgraded because i don't want a smaller screen. anyone have a recommendation for a phone for at least a 6" screen or should i just stay with my nexus?
You should take a look at the Mi mix from Xiaomi .
I think the look and specs are great .
Only thing what sucks is the price .
1+3T ? hopefully ?
Huawei Mate 8, it has a 6 inch screen, dope device I might say which I recently got.

The Mi Note 2 is just a tad smaller at 5.7" but with killer specs. I ordered two new devices last week to check out as a future replacement for my Nexus 6. I got both the Le Eco Le Pro3 which comes in at 5.5" and the Le Max 2 is 5.7" respectively and on their way. I love the size of my Nexus 6. It fits my catchers mit hands perfectly. On a side note about the size difference between the Mi Mix and the Nexus 6, the Mi Mix is almost identical in overal size.
Mi Mix
(6.25 x 3.22 x 0.31 in)
Nexus 6
(6.27 x 3.27 x 0.40 in)

It should, It works with T-Mobile 4g LTE..
I think they are both 5.7", but I'm considering the Axon 7 and the LG V20.
I'm not a huge fan of LG, but the newer devices look decent. They also have removable battery, and SD support. Sadly, single down-firing speaker. On the up side, the TMobile version has an unlockable bootloader, which is absolutely required in any device I would buy. ZeroLemon has announced an extended battery, which I loved on my Note 3. It sounds like there are some decent tempered glass screen protectors as well. TMobile sells the device, so things like wifi calling are built in, which is nice for a lot of people, even though I don't use it much. It's also already on Android 7, which is nice. I do think it's overpriced, but they are selling out with the Note 7 fiasco, so perhaps not so much.
Axon 7 has dual forward facing speakers, which is really nice on the Nexus 6. It doesn't have a removable battery though does have SD. Screen protectors are harder to come by as well. Bootloader can be unlocked, and ZTE is even providing development support for a CM build. Once that works, the ROM development really accelerates. No wifi calling, they keep saying "soon". So if you need that, be aware. The US version seems to be getting somewhat frequent ROM updates for security etc, but oddly they don't seem to be updating the EU model as much. Android 7 is also "soon", so something to be aware of. I haven't upgraded my Nexus 6 yet, so it's not a huge issue for me.
As I would want it for development reasons, kernel source is required which leaves out Mediatek CPUs etc.. I also like that the stock ROMs are reported to be reasonably decent. I'm not a big fan of the changes made for the sake of changes that you get with the Chinese-market devices. They just have different preferences in software than I do, apparently. The LG and ZTE stock ROMs aren't too annoying.
I know some people in China I am going to try to get them to send me a Mi Mix. They are selling the 6gb version for around $500 US in China and I very highly doubt you'll be able to pick one up in the US for that price
