Huawei P10 killing apps that use the GPS (ignoring any settings)

Since a few weeks ago I noticed that my Huawei P10 is aggressively killing any apps that use the GPS after locking the screen.
My EMUI & Android versions are both 8.0.0.
The apps I tried:
- OsmAnd - which I use to trace my walks and improve OSM with the data
- Komoot - which is an app to track your hikes and add photos, etc
- Graticule - which lets you share your location in realtime
What I tried:
1. Bringing up the task manager, locking the lock above the app.
2. Settings -> Battery -> Launch
* 'Manage all automatically' unchecked
* <App Name> unchecked then check all options on 'Manage manually' screen (Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background)
3. Settings -> Apps & notifications -> Apps -> Settings (cog at the bottom of the screen) -> Special access -> Ignore battery optimisation
* Added the apps to the 'Allowed' list
Regardless of the three things above after locking the screen in 5 to 10 minutes the app is killed. I think this is a bug in Huawei's implementation but their support is impossible to contact. I tried repeatedly and received no answer.
This is very frustrating because it used to work until a short time ago. I'm thinking about a factory reset and if that doesn't solve the issue I will be selling the phone because unfortunately this is a deal breaker for me.
Anyone experiencing the same problems? Any solutions? Suggestions?

Also tried formatting the cache partition, didn't help. If I'll have time during the weekend I'll do a factory reset.

I had the same problem with Strava, on an older version.

adb shell pm disable-user com.huawei.powergenie
If you want it back: adb shell pm enable com.huawei.powergenie
Powergenie is to limit battery usage, and it's too aggressive to kill app services.

I did a hard reset and deactivated powergenie as instructed above and the problem still persists.
I can't describe how disappointed I am. I will be putting up the phone for sale.
What I don't understand is: am I the only one having the problem? I don't see other people complaining or they complained about older versions whereas for me it was the other way around. It worked fine until a few months ago and now it doesn't.

I have the same gps recording problems om my Huawei P10Plus. On 8.0.0 android.
Did someone already found a solution. Huawei support can't offer smart ideas.

Hey, had this problem with running app runtastic, so when device promted, I switched in app settings to manual and allowed background running.
After that app was running fine.

I have the same problem with latest release.
Afaik there is no way to prevent huawei from doing this by simply factory reseting. It is not depending on a temporaly bug obviously it is a feature.
I think this was the same problem while VLC blacklisted Huawei devices in the google play store from compatible devices.
Some months ago they said they will make a deal with Huawei... No news about this until today.
And komoot has a topic in their development forum about but still open since many months.

And GPS apps are not the only ones. I've tried some apps to play local music from the phone on google chromecast. Mostly they stop playing after one music track. I think this is also regarding to the huawei problem with safing energy to aggressively.
Last but not least there are apps that don't have any problems with it. For example Google Maps, Huawei Apps, Whatsapp any much more. So there seem to be a whitelist to the powerengine.

strange.. i have no issue with strava, endomondo, google maps, soundcloud, spotify, google music ...thats the one i tested.
I use endomondo, google maps, soundlcoud and spotify almost everyday without any issues.
Maybe its just that i use the whitelisted apps.
I am on stock B379 C432 firmware.

Solution
We had the same issue in our app. The solution in our app was to change the setting in Settings
Settings->Apps & notifications->Apps-><your app>->Battery
Set App launch to 'Manage manually'
Auto-launch - activated
Secondary launch - activated
Run in background - activated

Goto Phone Manager touch power saving->Optimize.Phone Manager will rapidly identify apps or features that are rapidly drainning the battery.Touch the Optimize button net to each or feartures to disable it and start saving power.You can touch Recover to re-enable the app or feature.When you remove an app from the protected apps list,your phone will close the app automatically when you turn off the screen to save batterry.

after removing powergenie with adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.huawei.powergenie I have had no more issues with applications being killed.

Auto Launch App on Bluetooth connection

I am trying to get 2 apps working, so that when it gets a bluetooth connection from my car, the app automatically loads. The app is for a dashcam, however, when I have installed the apps, and select auto launch from within the settings, they never seem to launch
The apps are
Drivermatics Blackbox Dash Cam
AutoBoy Dash Cam
On my previous phone (Galaxy S7) I could get this function to work
Any ideas?

i used to use car home ultra which then started the dashcam software, but i now have a dedicated dashcam

I have issues with the app for my car also, it should start as soon as Bluetooth connects but rarely does.
I think using Tasker or something to do it would probably work, also set it to turn the BT volume to max after opening the app.

Yes Tasker would work, and without needing root for that type of activity I think. I have a similar action on my P20 Pro when it connects to my car, although I'm rooted.
If the apps have their own auto launch options though, you shouldn't need Tasker. Just make sure the apps are set to manual in Settings,Battery, App launch and Allowed in Settings, Apps, Settings, Special Access, Ignore Battery optimisation.
Don't know those apps specifically, but EMUI is a pain though for closing some apps and not letting them run schedules and/or auto launch type events even when the above settings are changed (Titanium Backup is a classic example - sometimes runs scheduled backup tasks, sometimes doesn't!), yet others run without issues.

Android Auto keeps crashing upon startup

I read somewhere dual apps can cause problems, so I deleted my only dual app on the phone (WhatsApp) and made sure that "user 999" is no longer there ("pm list users" shows only user 0). But the problem with Android Auto still persists.
It simply crashes after the initial configuration. Then subsequently every time I tap on the icon to run it, it crashes and quits right away.
I cleared data for both Android Auto and Google play services. Same problem.
I did some debloating when I started using the phone before installing Android Auto. Could this be the issue, that I debloated something that was essential to Android Auto's operations?
I also have Magisk running on the phone. Tried hiding Android Auto (Google Play Services is already hidden). Same problem.
Any help appreciated ! Running MIUI EEA 10.2.26 by the way.

Found the issue.
In app permissions I allowed the app to access calendar. But I have removed Google calendar from the system with adb tools (I use Outlook so Google Calendar becomes redundant). I guess Android Auto assumes Google Calendar is always there so it crashes when it is not found.
I disable the calendar permission and everything works now.

Question Notification and Sync issue

Gmail, WhatsApp, Telegram Skype, Google voice and more won't sync automatically and I'm not getting notification until open the apps manually

My friend look for device shield in your device and there you have some options to enable background services that's an app, pretty sure that is causing your issues.

yes, its device shield stops everything, after allowing for WhatsApp it's working fine
but Gmail, and Telegram do not update until opening and of course some other apps
some apps work fine when allow to run in the background in the device shield and some of them not working

You need to enable and auto restart there as well

I'm going a reset factory with LMSAA
also something weird is happening
Sometimes personalize app 0kb data and force close until I do restart phone several times

I found the problem for anyone who has the issue like me
first: Device Shield background running app should be ok
second: The device Shield Auto start app should be on
third: Automatic Battery saver turn on 1 AM - 6 AM, turn off this option, when battery saver is on force close all apps, after the battery saver duration is over apps doesn't sync automatically until opening them by your self
so the problem solved

NO issue for me.
1. Autostart apps from DeviceShield
2. "Allow running in background" for those apps in DeviceShield
3. From the app tray/drawer, press and hold an app (ex. Telegram) and tap on App Info.
Tap Battery and choose "Unrestricted".

Keeping Apps Alive in P30 Pro

This applies to the P30 too. I run an app called AlpineQuest which is GPS map/hiking software. It has the facility to track where you have been within the software (track recorder). Within the settings option I have set the following - Settings - Battery - App Launch - <select AlpineQuest and toggle to Manage Manually> - <select Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background and tap OK>.
However, the track recorder gets stopped, presumably by the P30 Pro, after a period of inactivity. This doesn't happen on a Sony phone we have. Am I missing any other settings to try to stop Huawei shutting down the track recorder of this app? Or just in general keeping Apps fully 'alive'?

And my P30 Pro is set up as per that guide which includes setting the Special Access which I did not mention in the post above.
Strangely I have another GPS app which also tracks and is set up the same way but that manages to track routes without issue
