Hoping someone can help I have tried everything. I have had issues with Android Auto I noticed after getting Android 10. I did everything, got new cables, cleared cache, cleaned the port etc..
I also happened to notice that I can't connect my phone to the computer for file transfer, I only get USB charging. I think this is related.
If I go into developer mode and go to default usb configuration there is no box checked. I can check any box besides file transfer/ android auto and it will stick if I go out and back in. If I choose file transfer/android auto and go out and back in, it is back to nothing being checked.
Weird thing is I can connect a Dex adapter and HDMI works, so I think the port is fine. A visual inspection of the port looks like all pins are in place.
My wife has the same phone, bought the same day with the same software version and has no issues, so my cables are fine too.
Any insight? Any help? I am getting extremely frustrated. Full restore is out of the questions because I can't connect via USB to back it up.
My main goal is trying to find out if this is software or hardware related.

I don't know how it happened but all of a sudden when I connect my Kaiser to my computer via USB cord, it doesn't connect. It charges my phone but it doesn't let me explore my phone. Activesync or Windows Mobile Decive Center do not read my phone.
I don't know if this matters, but when I go into COMM MANAGER (I don't know if I unchecked anything by accident) but the Data Connection tab is turned off and I can't turn it on.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can sync my phone again?
I tried a hard reset, i tried a soft reset, i tried different mini USB cords but NOTHING worked...
A couple things.
Under the settings tab there should be an option for " enhanced USB networking". try to enable/ disable this.
Also, it is possible your USB port is no longer functioning properly. A search for USB Problems yields MANY results, some of the fixed include simple things such as reflashing a new rom/radio , to the extremes of having the USB port replaced on the mainboard.
Also, have you tried to sync it to more than just 1 computer? Try on a couple. Make sure your activesync isnt the cause.
Just like pyraxiate said, try toggling the enhanced usb networking opetion. Also give your mini usb port on your phone a visual inspection, its not uncommon for it to crack (mine's cracked before).
If all looks good, restart your computer and soft reset your device. Google for activesync restart, theres 2 or 3 apps that completely kill activesync and restart it. It also wouldn't hurt to check another PC to see isolate the problem.
GOT IT, thanks for your help guys. I went to Settings>Connections>USB to PC and then unchecked 'enable advanced network functionality' and it worked!
Glad to hear this one was a simple one
Have fun here on XDA!
same problem
I have been having problems getting my usb to connect/sync also and thanks for the idea to check for a crack in the mini usb port. I am new to all this, this is my first pocket pc - or even smart phone before Is there an easy way to fix this problem or is a "send back to company" fix only?
Just a quick question- I have a Captivate that will charge when plugged in via USB but there is no data connection. The phone doesnt recognize that its plugged in to a computer, and therefore despite being able to boot into download and recovery mode, I cannot use ODIN to do anything. Clockwork wont work either due being on 2.2.
Ive read some other threads where most concluded it is more or less a hardware failure. Im coming to that conclusion myself, but wanted to check with you guys first. The audio jack did the same thing for a couple days-- it wouldn't work when plugged in. It did come back on its own, though Im not sure why.
Im running Cognition 2.2beta3, and cannot flash back to a stock rom nor to any other rom due to the lack of being able to use ODIN.
Is there any other way to flash back without ODIN? Also, if this is indeed a hardware failure- how can I go about getting it fixed? I traded for it on craigslist for an iPhone 4 so I didnt get it direct from AT&T. It did work for the first couple months.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Do you have USB debugging enabled (Settings-Applications-Development)?
If so, you won't get the connection choice screen when you plug in your USB. You can either disconnect USB debugging to get the choice screen, or leave USB debugging enabled and click on the "Select to copy files" choice in notifications.
I have tried with USB debugging on and off, and in various USB modes. None work, as the Captivate doesnt even acknowledge theres a data connection that has been made.
It worked in the past in all modes... debugging with the option to mount the drive, mass storage, Kies, and the media mode. No dice at the moment. Tried a hard reset today... nothing.
Looks like it could be a hardware issue-- just weird as the audio jack had the same issue and seemed to (randomly) resolve itself. Thanks for the suggestion! Any other ideas?

I had the exact same issue as you few days ago. One forum member recommended to me to uninstall the Samsung USB driver and reinstalling it again. It worked as soon as I did this. You should give it a try.
I had a similar issue when performing a master clear and flashing JI6. I am on windows 7, and I noticed that a different driver is needed to use Odin in download mode. I had been sideloading apps as well as transferring files with the stock driver from samsung, but my computer still wouldnt recognize the phone when in download mode. The solution was quite simple, when entering download mode my computer gave me the "driver not found" messege. I just let Windows Update find the right one for me (not sure if its generic or not) and everything worked fine after that. Hope this was relevant to your issue.
And I guess you can't do the phone off, open Odin, plug in USB with vol up/down pressed, right?
Not sure if this will help, but I bought a second USB cable to carry in my laptop case. If I use it I can charge the phone but cannot connect it to a PC. If I use the one that came with the phone it works fine.
I have actually tried some other cables and they have issues too. They all have a larger cable housing towards the end that plugs into the phone, where the one that comes with the phone is slimmer.
A friend at work as a Fascinate and he has the same issue, we suspect that the increased size is keeping the usb from connecting all the way in the phone.
Ive tried different computers and different cables, as well as different drivers. Ive used 64bit systems and 32bit systems... XP and Vista.
The phone itself goes into download mode, though I have to go through the terminal and use 'reboot download'. I cant use command line on the computer as it doesnt find the device... the phone never is identified to it. It just charges.
Is there any way to perform the commands that ODIN does without actually using ODIN? If nothing else, Id like to flash back to JF6 and be able to use the OTA updates. At this point, Im stuck till clockwordmod works with 2.2.
I experienced the same thing. My Captivate would charge, but it couldn't connect to any of three computers (WinXP w/drivers, Mac OS X, and Linux) with either of two micro usb cables I had. I would always get a USB error in some form.
I was on cog 2.1, and was able to roll back to the JH7 OTA update without ODIN. Afterward I brought it to an ATT Tech Center and convinced them it was a hardware failure.
I got a warranty replacement, and it didn't work either.
It turned out to be bad micro usb cables. One was the original Samsung cable, but it was loose, there was plenty of play and wiggle in the sockets of both phones.
The best micro usb cable I've found is from a Kindle. It has a a larger plastic base than the stock from Samsung, but critically it has a longer connector. There's a solid click when connected and absolutely no play or wiggle possible. It works every time.
I don't know if you can restore from 2.2 to JH7 without ODIN. Now that we have 2e Recovery on Froyo (in Cog 2.2 BETA6), could you use Clockwork Mod (Rom Manager) to flash designgear's JH7 OTA ROM?
Try some alternate micro USB cables, you might be surprised!
Im having the same issue, was there any resolution to this from the OP??
I suspect hardware also, and Ive got another Micro USB on order from Amazon and will prob buy one from a store tomorrow also.
the stock cable is horrible, I bought a nice charger the other day and it has a nice click and stay, and since I plugged it in to the new charger it no longer shows up on any computer with the stock cable. Im wondering if the new charger with a tad larger connector spread the connectors just a tad too far for the stock cord.
I tried everything as well, I hard rebooted, put into recovery mode and even deleted all my user data to try and see if there was some software that was blinding the computer to the connection... no luck
Ill let you know what I find.
Same issue here. Has anyone had any luck with a new usb cable? Luckily, I can transfer files from my computer via bluetooth for now, but it takes forever!
I went into menu -> settings -> connectivity, and set the USB connection to "Always Ask" when connecting to a computer so that it would ask me if I want to use Charging/Mass Storage/Media Sync/etc. Even with that box checked, no matter what I do, when I connect the phone to my computer, it does NOT ask me what USB connection mode to use. Can anyone else confirm whether or not they experience this problem?
Thanks!
SOLVED - driver conflict with my Samsung Epic. Connecting one then the other wreaks all sorts of havoc.
call Verizon or LG for that support..OR try your control panel windows settings..devices

Is the little USB symbol showing up in the notification bar?
If not...try a different USB port on the computer.
Sounds dumb, i know...but it worked for me today when I had the same problem. And I think I recall it working on my old Incredible.
SOLVED
SOLVED - driver conflict with my Samsung Epic. Connecting one then the other wreaks all sorts of havoc, between mass storage mode and whatnot. When I switch the LG from charge to mass storage and back on the fly, it's doing something to the samsung drivers. When i reconnected my samsung, then the LG again, things went cuckoo for cocoa puffs until I rebooted.
I can't post a new topic as I have less then ten posts but I have an issue with my connectivity as well. When unplugged the phone still shows the USB icon in the top left corner like it is plugged in. However when plugged in the phone will charge but when connected to a computer mass storage mode will not work or show up. I have tried it in windows xp/ osx on my MacBook. Windows 7 on my desktop and nothing. The drivers are good as it was working before. I have done a wipe/data, restored back to cubed 1.1 mod and it is still doing it. It doesn't bug me that bad as I use andftp to move my apostle back and forth from my NAS to sdcard. But I would like it fixed as trying to put music or ISO's for my psx emulator can take a minute over the wifi. Any help would be appreciated.

Why am i getting a Factory data cable connected and i cannot switch between usb modes?
I had the Sony XAV-AX100 and everything worked great. I just switched to the AX5000 and now AA drops out all the time. It will either freeze up, or it will come up with a warning that there is no connection to USB. I have tried a different usb cable. Same problem. I am using the same phone Galaxy S8 and the same high end USB cable. I uninstalled AA from phone and re downloaded it. Same thing. It is very random. It will boot up AA just fine then go to Pandora play a song or two then drop all connections. If I unplug and wait and plug phone back in it will work for a short time then drop out again.
Anyone have any thoughts on what to try here?
I have talked to Sony chat session not much help here.
Thanks
I talked to Sony a little bit (from what I could understand) They think it is a MSC "Mass Storage Connection" connection with USB. But Android has not had a MSC connection since maybe 2015. So why would this be happening now with this firmware? Anyone have any suggestions on how to get phone to a MSC USB connection instead of MTP? Or the radio to use the standard MTP connection on every Android out there.
I got the AX5000 on Monday and have been fighting the same issue. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 running Oreo (8.0) and have tried everything from a physical perspective (cables, flash, factory resets) but no luck. When I spoke with Sony today, they tried to tell me that AA was not supported on my car (2012 Jeep Wrangler) which ignores the fact that this is an after-market upgrade. I agree that it's likely an issue with how the head unit communicates with the phone. The only place I have found to change USB settings is under the Developer Options. The available options are Charge this phone, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol), PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol), RNDIS (USB Ethernet), Audio Source, and MIDI. I'll try each of them and resort back on the results.
Yes with talking to Sony they said that the phone USB has to be set to MSC for USB1 to work. Well you would think that they would know that has not been used on android run phone for years. I tried developer mode and setting debugging to on. and even tried different USB configurations in debugging. like Switching it to Audio Source. As soon as plug my phone in it kicks it back to MTP. This is a easy fix for Sony they have the MTP setting on the USB 2 wire. But we will see how long it takes them to do an update on this since they just did one last week. Very frustrating I have the AX5000 on my Harley. So it is not very convenient to mess with it.
Please do post if you find some kind of solution: As I am sure Sony will be awhile.
I had the same result with attempting to switch the USB mode. It switches back when the phone is plugged in. A firmware update may be our only hope.
Well not sure if I found a possible fix. I put my phone in developer mode. Then switched the USB to debugged. and used my original USB cord that came with the S8. For the limited time that I have been able to check it out it has worked. Keep in mind this is on a Motorcycle. So time to work on this is limited. The problem I have is that the original cord is 4' long and I have no where to tuck it in. I have tried several different short cords (amazon) and they all will work for a bit but AA stops randomly.
I still think it is funny When I talked to SONY they said that this radio would not work with my phone USB protocol. But I have talked to several people that say they have no problems with same phone & same radio.
Anyone know where to get a 1' USB cord that would be the same as stock Samsung S8 cord? Yes I check with US cellular. Phone carrier..
Thanks
Does anyone know if Sony has fixed this issue yet? This is really the only deck I want. The 2330 was another I was looking at but the screen is resistive.
Still an issue for me. No firmware update beyond 1.01 and no settings or application conflicts that I've found.

connection to AA should automatically set your USB to MIDI.
if it doesn't, try setting MIDI manually before connecting the cable (and double check it after connecting).
Yeah, tried that with my Galaxy S7 and it auto-switches it back.
I have it working using a Pixel 3 XL.
First, enable developer options
Settings > About phone > tap Build number 7 times
Go back to Settings, then System > Advanced > Developer Options > Default USB Configuration > Set to MIDI
I have a Mazda 3 with Android Auto Installed. I have been trying to connect my Pixel 3XL for the past month, without success.
I have tried everything including cleaning the USB connectors, different cables including good ones. Turned USB debugging on. Set File Transfer to default in developer settings. Reset to factory settings on both the car infotainment system and phone. Cleared Cache in... everything! etc etc.
Essentially every bit of advice you can find online, I have tried.
I think I have found the problem but I don't know how to fix it. When I plug the phone in, I have to change the USB connection preference to File Transfer / Android Auto (when I haven't made it default in developer setting). As soon as I launch Android Auto it sets it back to No File Transfer, and wont let me change it.
What is the solution here?
