I have a group text with my parents and brother. They are getting my messages but I'm getting nothing from them. On Beta 2 and have reset the Android messages app. One of the users is an iPhone if that matters. On Verizon.

So maybe it was a coincidence. This weekend was my first time flying. I wonder if it was an airplane mode issue. Didn't really notice it and wasn't on my phone much after flying in on Thursday. and Saturday night I was messing around on my phone and realized I hadn't heard from my family group message. So after clearing the cache and doing all those things. I toggled airplane mode on and off after doing a couple resets that didn't do anything and all of my messages came in at once. So don't know if it was a coincidence or if it was an issue with airplane mode sticking or something. It is solved now. At least so far

You should really try using something like WhatsApp or anything else but regular text messaging for group messages.

I have WhatsApp but like two or three people I know actually use it. My mom and dad brother, not all of them have it.
Not rooted or anything. toggling airplane mode helped for some reason. I still do get this invalid file or something along those lines error occasionally. I'm assuming it's picture messages based on the context around those messages that just come in as invalid file. On that given incident that this is referring to I was traveling and had a layover so the second time that I went into airplane mode it must have hung up for some reason.

You gotta get people converted. I have my family on it and it's so much better than SMS. My closest friends like using Instagram direct messages and others do Facebook messenger. Again, anything else but SMS is better. Honestly, I can't wait for Facebook to just make them cross message with each other.

True. Are all the recipients in the group message Android users or any iOS users? I know there can be issues with that too especially if people went from iOS to Android.

After using the Nexus 4 for 24 hours, I have found I have two gripes with this phone. The first is there is no audible alert if you receive a text message while on a call. In other words, if someone sends you a text message while you are on a call, you will not be made aware of it until you turn on the screen and look at it. The other gripe I have is the call waiting beep is almost completely inaudible, and the second beep sometimes doesn't even occur. In other words, if you are on a phone call, and a second call comes in, you most likely will not know about it and thus will not be know to answer the call. Today I have missed several phone calls because I was on the phone and a call waiting beep could not be heard. As an experiment, I got on a call and then called my phone from a third phone just to hear the volume of the call waiting beep...it is so low it may as well not be there. To make matters worse, after the first beep, the second beep takes so long to occur, your voicemail may likely pick it up either right before or right after the second beep occurs.
Software, not nexus 4 issue. I'm sure there's an app or will be implemented into ROM to solve your problem.

The software comes stock on the Nexus 4 thus it is a Nexus 4 issue. Not being alerted to a second call isn't something that can be easily excused with, "there's an app or will be implemented into a ROM". A person shouldn't need to install apps or hack their phone just so they can know when a second call is coming in...after all it's a smartPHONE..
Sms issue can be solved with a 3rd party Sms app the call beep not so big of an issue to me so that's all I can say.

Maybe not being alerted of calls isn't a big deal to you, but there are some of us that get important calls throughout the day, and not being alerted to them is not acceptable. Call me old-fashioned but I expect a phone to actually be able to handle phone duties, and alerting me to a second call is one of those duties. That's a pretty basic expectation, and a glaring flaw that needs to be corrected.

I'm guessing you've set the phone to vibrate for incoming messages?

It's clear I like the phone? I haven't stated how I feel about the phone besides the two issues I have with it. Also, for your information, complaining is how issues get resolved because it brings it more attention. Some of us aren't content with resting on our laurels and accepting the subpar. Furthermore, 3rd party software should not be required just to get simple basic functionality. Instead of excusing shortcomings, you should be demanding a complete device. Also, to be clear, I want to like the phone and want to see it succeed. I have a vested interest in it (which I won't get into publicly), so it actually benefits me for it to be a good phone and do well. That said, if it's falling short somewhere then it needs to be corrected and not just covered up.

It's set to have both an audible alert and vibrate on incoming messages. The problem is, during a phone call, neither of these things happens. There literally is no alert during a phone call other than the icon on the screen. In other words, if you don't happen to be looking at your screen, you will never know you have a text message if you are on a phone call.

First of all, it's not a Nexus 4 issue, it's a 4.2 issue.
Second of all, I doubt Google would remove a feature they have had since...idk 2.2(the first version of Android I had). Try a restore, or mess with the settings...or maybe you're holding it wrong.
I recently switched from a Nexus 4 to a Moto X; both on T-Mobile, both stock, locked, and un-rooted. I'm noticing that when I send & receive group MMS messages from certain people their messages are coming in as individual MMS messages and do not go into the group messages that I sent and show only addressed to me. One of these people has a Galaxy S4 and another a Galaxy Nexus, both on 4.2.2 and both have the group MMS option checked in the messaging app (as do I). I never had a problem with my Nexus 4 so I suspect there may be something going on with the Moto X. Is anyone else having issues with group MMS messaging or does anyone have a solution? Again, I am fully stock, locked, and un-rooted... and I have the group MMS option checked in the messaging app. Thanks!
Both phones use the AOSP mms so I would lean towards it being an APN issue than something wrong with the phone.

its not always the carrier and can just be the phones sending it differently than what ATT expects from group text. but there is an entire hoopla of things going on in the background with who gets to you was type of signals and blah blah blah. I use group me for groups of friends that we talk to or discuss stuff and post things all the time. I actually like it better because you can set up different notifications so you don't have your phone going off all day when multiple people are sending stuff back and forth.
Getting people to use certain apps for certain types of messages won't work when it comes to some people like older family members or people who are intimidated by technology. Just gotta hope that things work themselves out eventually... I hope that Hangouts does indeed integrate SMS & MMS and solves some of these compatibility problems.

Don't think that is going to happen. Both things you said. Hangouts won't be able to fix the problem because apple won't have it on there. Nor will everyone use hangouts on their phone because I don't. And if they don't have Wifi i doubt hangouts is going to start defaulting people to use the internet instead of a text message but perhaps.
2nd, the phone companies are set up how they are and the price to change all of that for the little benefit of sending texts over 170 characters (or how ever much) between ATT and Vzw as well as better group messaging will never be worth changing how all their software is built. As a metaphor, it might be something similar to changing computers from using 1s and 0s, doubt it is that extreme but its kind of like that lol.
Both of those are just opinions but figured I'd share.

Hangouts exists on iOS though there won't be a way to integrate SMS sending on that end, of course. But yeah, as you say, we're all screwed when it comes to MMS interoperability.

can try factory resetting, then pay attention to your apps as qhen you install them(one at a time).
For some reason, when I try to edit my contacts in the stock Contacts app, I get that stupid "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" message. Does anyone know why this is happening, and perhaps how to fix it? I tried deleting the data & cache and force stopping it, but nothing works. I did end up getting a more stable contacts app called Contacts +, but I'd still like to get this resolved anyway.

I C. That's cool.
I may just use Xperia Companion to reinstall the software then.
But will using Xperia Companion to "repair" the phone's software mean it installs the INTERNATIONAL firmware, or the US? lol If I get the US firmware then I'd have to get the software to reinstall the fingerprint software too b/c we both know Sony Mobile idiotically decided not to give the US version that.
It will install whatever you currently have on the device.

Yeah....... it could be any of those. It was suggested to me to just wait and Sony may very likely send an update to fix it. I'm using Contacts + for now and it's been working just fine.

I also notice Google Messenger, which always worked before on my Z3 and S7, doesn't work so well for MMS messages on the XP. In group texts, the recipients I send to would get my group response AND the same response would be sent to each one individually. But I went back to using Textra which is also great and now at least that issue's been resolved.

gclancer,
Yeah but for me, it's not just about the speed. I love having the IP65/68 rating as I sometimes have to take calls while in the shower (I leave phone near bathroom door, not in shower lol). I'll step out and take them with wet hands and face......so for me, the XP is a must since the X doesn't have that feature. Being slightly faster is not a big deal, you're right there........but I'd still prefer it.

MGS,
Yeah the 2nd time around (maybe 1st too?), which was when I used XC, I made sure to choose the option to set up as a new phone too. I didn't really have any backups to restore anyway, so this was the only option. Yet when I went to the Contacts app it still wouldn't let me edit random contacts, though everything else worked fine with it. So not sure but since everything else is fine with phone, I'm just gonna let it go since I now use Contacts + anyway and it's much more stable.
I have been having the same issues. I have tried factory resetting it different ways. The sony bridge repair tool does not even list the Xperia X Performance on its list of phones yet. So, that's a bummer. There's this site that gives you 4 ways to do a hard reset. However, on the 4th method where you are asked to download Sony's flash tool, the X Performance isn't even listed on the supported devices.
I do wish that Sony sends a fix immediately.
mac,
I returned the phone (which had other issues too) to my Amazon seller (NGP) and the replacement they sent me this morning came ALREADY set up. Normally I would be mad about that, but the Contacts app WORKED! Didn't close out when I tried to edit it. I wanted to make sure it was fixed though, so I did a factory reset, and ughh........ it's not working now again. I e-mailed NGP and asked them to tell me what they did. I hope they can tell me so I can do it too and fix this. I will keep this thread posted.
You're right, it's very annoying! MGS told me he factory resetted but didn't use backup during setup or even log in with Google account, and it worked for him. But when I tried that........nope! Even tried creating a new account, and nope! Very weird, but again I hope NGP can tell me what they did.

Picture this scenario: your boss calls asking why you are not at work. You can't - off the top of your head - quickly think of a reason, other than you didn't fancy going in. As you fumble for your words you mute and un-mute the phone. Your boss thinks it is a bad line. But but before he can say he'll call back, the phone crashes. You can now leave the phone off long enough for you to be able to come up with a good excuse for being off work.

As you fumble for your words you mute and un-mute the phone. Your boss thinks it is a bad line. But but before he can say he'll call back, the phone crashes. You can now leave the phone off long enough for you to be able to come up with a good excuse for being off work.
Good old Google they think of everything!

Right! I also might add that if I were to have done that to my bosses at any time....to the unemployment line I would go! And rightfully so! ?

Maybe I'm missing something but why would you want to mute and unmute multiple times in succession? I doubt most people would ever encounter this as a real use case scenario.

Meetings. For me, 25 times causes the crash no matter how fast or slow mute is hit.

I don't think anyone has a reason to hit the mute button multiple times but it still shouldn't cause the phone to reboot.

It's this attitude that gives us "sloppy software" - instead of designing it for what a person can do, don't test or consider things you think someone is "unlikely" to do.
Legit does it to mine too...
Has anybody raised it to google?

They told me it would be fixed in a future update. I would hope January's!

I tried it and my phone reboots as well.
BUT warning to others... don't try it because now my phone is acting weird after the reboot. Even when I enter my unlock pattern, it'll go back to a blank screen and then back to a lockscreen again. After a few attempts, it'll remain on "starting pixel..." Only fix was a shutdown and then a power up.... hopefully no lasting effects.

Mine reboots as well. When I am on a conference call, I use the mute button like a push to talk feature to keep background noise at a minimum.
FIXED! Feb 2020 image.
