Peeling glass back - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Anyone experienced this?
https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-4-xl-back-panel-issue-1138848/

Nobody?

Guess not. All good on mine since last October :good::good:

Nope, but my fist P4 I had the screen glass start lifting and separating from the chassis. My replacement hasn't had either of these issues though.

So it isnt a common problem.

I don't think so. Mine has been fine since launch day and I haven't heard of this until recently. For what's it worth I charge wireless 90% of the time.

I wasn't aware of this, but it sure is concerning. I took the case off my 4 XL to check every corner and inch of the back glass to see if there was anything similar, and I didn't see anything. I've had my 4 XL since March but only started using it as my primary device yesterday. It doesn't appear to be a common problem, but I think it also has to do with usage (wear/tear). I know some people forget their phones in the car and leave it in hot temperatures, so that could be a cause or if your phone heats up too much from charging and using simultaneously. These are just theories that come to mind; nothing is confirmed, of course. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully, this doesn't become a common issue.

I think at this point in time it's hard to tell how widespread it is. There are plenty of people on Reddit who say it's happening to them but my guess would be it's probably a small percentage of overall users. I think only time will tell how widespread the problem really is.

Google has also responded to the issue through one of the big Android news sites and stated that this issue is not being caused by the battery swelling or the battery in any way at all. I figured I'd add that to this thread as before this statement it was starting to seem as if there was a battery defect that was starting to arise. They didn't claim what DID cause the lifting glass but at least it"s not a battery issue. I'd wager its a mix of how the user is taking care of the phone mixed with subpar adhesive.

I am.
While this issue has been documented all over. ifixIt has even into details why. I have this issue on a massive level. I haven't not contacted tmo or Google about it yet. I keep it in a favor case. It is a serious problem, and in my case it's really bad!

I read some of the comments of the news article and some people had it happen to them multiple times. It made me suspicious about how they were using their phones and if it was a specific habit that was causing damage. I know Google claims it's not to do with the battery, but there are certain habits that definitely cause battery swelling. I keep wanting to jump to that conclusion.

I have the same issue
I tried to glue the peeled area and it got broken ...

I had my first Pixel 4 XL since launch as a daily driver for 6 months and didn't have that issue. I always charge the phone with a wire and never wireless.
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk

Quote from a 9To5Google article (for what it's worth):
uBreakiFix has confirmed to 9to5Google that while this person claiming to be an employee may have a theory on the issues facing Pixel 4 owners, they “defer to manufacturers regarding alleged device issues, and have no known technical service bulletins regarding battery-related issues in the Pixel 4 series.”
https://9to5google.com/2020/07/22/pixel-4-xl-back-glass-peeling-issues/

I do have this problem. I became aware of it after reading several articles online and peeling my 4 XL out of the case for the first time ever to check for this issue.
I was rejected by Google Device Support because of minor physical damage to the lower part where the fabric case does not protect the device.
I had it repaired (glued together again) with my provider , but it start's to come loose again. I am really not happy with Google's policy on this issue.
This voids IP ratings and even though Google said it doesn't have to do anything with the battery swelling, I am concerned (the second time it started from the middle, not the corner).

I have had my Pixel 4 XL since launch, so almost last 8-9 months. I baby the phone, clean it regularly, and have an established charging cycle. I examined it closely and have not found this issue. Everything looks good and like it was when I first bought the phone. I wish Google would say what is causing the issue, if it is not the battery.

I've had the phone since launch. I just recently got my replacement device from Google after having this issue.
The online chat was a nice experience and they just asked a few questions about it and made me send them some pictures.
At first they said it was due to a physical drop because i did have some scuffs on the side. But they ended up replacing it anyways.

Glad to hear that they did what was right and replaced the phone for you. What are your thoughts on what caused your Pixel's glass to peel?

Battery habits mainly.
I had damaged batteries in the past, I charge my device over night "Bad me".
I never had time to watch phones charge stop at 90%, say if you have 90% before you sleep what do you have in the morning if the device is not being charged 60%
Yes I know what experts say but I just can not will not follow these instructions.
I go home the phone has 60% battery life, I put it on a charger.
Wake up the device is fully charged.
I hate battery technology "swelling batteries" should not happen.

I've used an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S(dev device) and a Note 3 as desk clocks... always plugged in. All of them suffered swelling batteries popping the device apart within a year.
Currently on the desk is a 5 year old Note 5, but it's rooted and prevented from charging past 60%. I expect it will never have this issue.

that battery is the worst decision made by htc...ever, but if you dont mind the buldge, congrats.
The added bulk is no issue for me. I used to have a jasjam with an aftermarket extended battery. Now THAT was ugly! I actually like the look of the HD2 battery.
Could you post some good quality photos with it on and off the phone when you get it.
Cheers chap
Have you used it by now ?
What are your thoughts on it ?
especially one with you holding it in your hand, please.
just want to see its size in relation to your fingers.

If you are referring to the non-HTC one, beware of the cover being unable to lock to the device body. I had one from them and have since returned it to them. Till now the replacement hasn't come in yet.
While I'm waiting, I have already ordered the one from Mugen power. Just received it two days ago. It's too early to comment on the battery capacity but at least the cover locks well to the device body.
Ordered the HTC one with kickstand from mobilefun as clove were out of stock last week.
I've got an O2 Leo, and charging the battery resulted in the LED flashing green and amber indicating a problem.
So I've sent the battery back and should get a new one this week.
However, the battery may have been ok.
Others have reported charging problems with the larger battery on the O2 stock ROM, which is resolved by applying the latest O2 ROM from HTC.
My Leo now has this so fingers crossed when the replacement battery arrives I'll be ok.
I want to order from them as well but sadly enough they dont accept paypal does anyone know of a store selling these batteries and accept paypal payments ?
Try your luck on eBay
There you go. That's the only one original one on eBay. Including shipping it comes up to $67.00
That's pretty expensive, but then again, the Mugen one costs the same.

Just got the same one as the link you have posted, yesterday. Charged it for the first time overnight yesterday, & been using it since this morning at 6am, now it's almost 6pm in my timezone, and the battery is now at 69%... And I am a heavy user - lotsa of calls (100-150mins) / smses (50-80) / mmses(10-15) during work, 3G connection always on, pushmail, twittering, photo-taking (10-20), always fiddling around...blah-blah... Usually, with my standard 1230mah battery, after 12 hours, I'm down to 15-20% with similar usage.
Here are some pics I just took of my BP-E400, and some together with its much slimmer brother.

And I must say that htcacc's response & service is outstanding & quick. Their sales manager, James is excellent!
Flying out and back to Sharm El Sheikh, the kickstand worked great, holding the phone at the right angle on the seatback table.

My bad. Didnt realize that you've bought it through ebay. Thought you could get locally. Thanks anyway.
Great photos!
Probably the clearest photos I have seen till date for the extended battery.
How good is the kickstand though?
I know it locks into place but is it something that might get loose and start to dangle over time?
Is there any tension for it at the joint connecting it to the battery cover or does it just flail about once it's been un-latched?
Just ordered one .

Thank you for your kind words, buddy.
I think imho, the kickstand is really good. With some kinda spring-action-cum-tension, it actually flicks and locks into place, into something like an in-built groove beneath...If that makes sense..lol Oh, and it doesn't flail around too.

My X - rest in peace

Sadly and unexpected my HOX passed away earlier today.
We were in the car togehter and my dear HOX was running Waze giving me helpful advice along my route when it suddenly screamed (yes!) and soon there after the screen went blank. All my attempts to resuscitate was futile and while I held HOX in my hand it's feverish temperature burnt me.. and the smell... oh the smell!
I rushed to the nearest 3 ER (Service Center) where the could do nothing but confirm it had perished.
It was completely stock, no unlock, nothing modded but a Copter screen protector. Is there a support group for grief counseling?
So sorry to hear of your loss. I think it might have overheated on the dash. Was the sun shinning on the phone while it was giving you directions?

No, it wasn't sunny and it was mounted in the official HTC car thingy, and there is an air vent just behind it. Maybe just because it wasn't sunny and bright the backlight was cranked up?

Thanks for your support!
The remains has been sent of to some center for doing a post mortem and I'm hoping (praying) it will resurrect (with major transplants). The loaner I got is a stranger from another Galaxy who is terribly slow.
I miss my X.:crying:
I got my phone back today from the shop, according to the notes on the service bill the battery had overheated and shorted the mainboard. The case and screen survived but rest had been replaced.

Haha HTC didn't want to replace mine, eventually agreed though. Here's the funny bit:
To repair the phone they needed to replace the screen for the dead pixels. They then needed to replace the main board for the wifi issue.
Then needed to give it a new case for the wonky holes on front speaker. (and they actually did this even after agreeing to replace , still have same serial, just different imei)
You would have thought they might of just agreed to a replacement in the first place haha

Yes, it was major transplants but it's soul is the same. I've spent the day retraining all lost function and capabilities so the recover process is well on its way.
I personally would never use my HOX as a GPS guidance. Why not just buy a regular cheap GPS from any electronic store? Cell phones are not to be placed in any areas having sun shining upon. One time I was only leaving in my room where the sun was strong was gazing intensely inside, my HOX was severely overburned just from the sun.
I left my phone under my pillow with the alarm going off once, and i was in a really heavy sleep, woke up and it burnt me -.-

Well, I have an expensive built in dash mounted GPS... but it don't give me as good traffic data as Waze. The phone wasn't in direct sunlight , it was in the car kit holder well shaded, the GPS signal penetrates the car roof with ease.

[Q] Nexus Metal Letter Inserts on back of device

On a serious note could it be the great I've noticed it can get pretty toasty under heavy use. Could the heat make the adhesive weak?
Happened to me also ... Pulled all the letters out with a needle.
Happened to me today with the X.....super disappointed, I've had it barely 3 days...
I want to glue it back on...anyone has any advice in terms of which type of glue would work best?
Happened to me also. The X on the back started to peel off one of the lines and I pushed it back in. Then later that day I realized that same line was gone and lost somewhere.
I contacted T-Mobile over the phone since I ordered it over the phone and they are shipping me a brand new one overnight. I should receive it tomorrow.
They stated it has not been an issue brought up to them yet so if any of you guys bought it at T-Mobile, go ahead and state there is an issue with it. I just received my case today so it shouldnt be a problem anymore. Sucks that this is definitely an issue though :/

A VERY thin layer of superglue, applied to the phone (not the letters) should do the trick. Make sure you put a very very thin layer, else the superglue will come on top of the letters when squeezed.

Just call T-Mo (or where ever you purchased it from), and tell them to replace it. You should have 15-30 days warranty from the seller (and 1 year from the manufacturer)

i call t-mo no dice.
they said phone is out of stock for at least 6 weeks and i can return the phone under buyers remorse and there are no t-mo stores near me with that phone in stick. any one have any other ideas? i would be fine with a replacement letter E. will moto replace this or is the best bet to get through t-mo?
I know that to some folks this issue might seem petty but I'd be pretty damn pissed if this happened to my nexus. This is a 700$ phone and I wouldn't accept anything but a perfect phone. I really wish Google/Motorola had got their **** together for this launch, waiting 6 weeks for a replacement is some bull****.

Motorola does offer the warranty, so you can certainly contact them, and they should be able/willing to fix/replace it. Note that they (unlike T-mo) may not replace with a new device - they may instead send you a refurb).
T-Mo may be saying 6 weeks just to discourage you from returning it - you could try to ask them to replace it when available (since the problem happened within the remorse period). YMMV though
I found this problem with mine today.
chatted with moto. they told me that they would replace the phone for me. with the advanced exchange policy, they will send a new phone to me (3-5 business days) before i send mine back to them. She assured me that i would not have to wait on any inventory back order time.
i bought my phone through moto.

What should Samsung do to make its customers loyal to its brand? And why should we?

With all those troubles, possible crazy crowd of in-store swapping, burned jeep and not allowing to use its Phone in the flights, should it reward its most loyal customers if they decide to stay with Samsung? Or give the customers a reason to be loyal?
Right now, the price tag they put is pathetic 25 bucks, for all those sure problems. Leaving the questions and uncertainties to us:
1. Should I trust them and believe it really fixed the problem in about one week (while not knowing it in a one year development cycle)?
2. Could it pose a new risk in its rush to fix the old problem?
3. Did it fix that stuck pen problem also, which I thought be the major complaint about this phone before the explosion?
4. When will likely the FAA lift the Samsung phone restriction? Am I going to have problem to travel with Samsung phone (not just Note 7, as they all look similar) in the coming months?
5. With all those trouble, minus 25 bucks, Note 7 still the most expensive phone in the market. And its price could go down a lot in the coming months, with all those recalls phones(refurbished?), and the damage to the reputation, possibly making its most loyal customers very frustrated with their top bids even there is no more issues afterwards.
I am a loyal Android and Samsung Note user, or was. However, with the most current FAA news, I am seriously considering Iphone 7 Plus now (which is also cheaper), when I still have an option.
Thoughts?
Samsung should not have to bribe you to be "loyal"...honestly, I don't believe in "loyalty" to a brand. What I am loyal to is the spen....another manufacturer makes a pen as good as samsung rest assure I will drop samsung.
It is up to you to stick it out, return your device and wait for the price to drop as you have said...and buy it, or you can just drop it all together and go to another device. Their 25 bucks is their reward...you take it or you leave it.
P.S I didn't realize "stuck pen" was the major complaint about the phone lol...mine been working fine all around. How is the pen being stuck? I saw a post somewhere that someone pushed the pen in too deep and it got stuck...all they did was wiggle it out and all was good....is that what you are talking about?

I'm lucky that work will comp my phone. I will wait a couple of more months. My Note 4 is still going strong. I replaced the battery 6 months ago and it's like new. I reviewed ifixit for the Teardown of the Note 7 Doesn't look so bad to get to the battery. Sealing it back up shouldn't be too bad. I don't plan on getting my phone wet. I have to deal with iDevices at work and at home from time to time. I can't have an iPhone as a daily driver. It doesn't work out for me. I need calendar widgets, I need customization, I need an adblocker...
1. Billions of Li-ion batteries were made, they're all the same. Factory that messed up no longer supplies batteries for Note7, if I stop trusting Samsung, may as well stop trusting all Li-ion batteries makers.
2. as far as I understand it, there is nothing to fix, just properly follow manufacturing process and catch errors. The following and catching somehow didn't work at one plant, that is no longer involved.
3. what stuck pen? If clicking mechanism fails, just like in a pen, there is free replacement. never happened on mine.
4. Getting our government involved is a nightmare that may never end, they have no clue. Just FYI Boeing 787 have whole bunch of Li-ion batteries on board, that burst into serious fires in past, if I remember at least one cargo plane catch fire and crashed while carrying Li-ion batteries few years back. I thought total ban on use of any electronics during take off and landing was still in place? I have no idea how this will end, but there were other phones catching fire before, including iphone? Maybe not to the same degree, but nothing was recalled and taken off market either.
5. I could swear I've seen 64GB 6s for $850 as well, but maybe I'm wrong, didn't pay much attention.
I'll go with other poster, give me something similar to N7 with spen, I would have no problem switching and that LG phone with stylus, was LG afraid of even pretending it was trying to compete with Note series? Was it trying to create new market, like "poor man Note phone", I don't know, but can somebody tell LG used old Note 2 and Note 3 are still available for better price.

I bet these companies aren't doing anything for their customers.

Galaxy S9/trade-in horror story

I bought an S9 in early April from Samsung's website, and they were running a deal for $150 off with trade-in of my phone (the 1G Pixel 5"), along with a 99$ bundle that included the Gear VR, IconX, and wireless charger. That plus 720 for a brand new phone with rave reviews (basically the great S8 + a better camera, processor, etc) sounded like a good deal, and my Pixel's bluetooth issues were nagging as I had more accessories using it than before. Things were going well enough after this, but I had mixed feelings about the phone - the camera quality is incredibly inconsistent, really worse than the Pixel, battery life seemed worse than my 1.5 year old phone, and I wondered about future updates (or lack thereof), but I was happy enough with it.
Just over two weeks after buying it, just outside of my return period, Samsung informed me that my Pixel was not up to their terms for trade-in and they would be charging me $125 of the 150 trade-in value. $25 for my perfectly functional phone that I'm now honestly convinced was better in the first place, all things considered. They sent me two photos which show light paint specks missing, which on a metal phone is par for the course under "normal wear and tear" - which they said it was beyond. Absolutely ridiculous. Try sticking your phone in a bag with anything else and that not happening. The phone was in great shape when I sent it, well packaged, also in its nice fabric case, which I thought was a fun idea at the time. I have been back and forth with them on the BBB after waiting over two weeks for response from their support channel (I doubt they would ever have come up with an answer for me otherwise), and they are standing fast on not honoring their agreement while referring to me annoyingly as "valued Samsung customer" (whatever). I've seen this isn't a unique case and wonder if some sort of class action lawsuit is brewing (sign me up!).
The absolute lack of scruples they've shown in jipping me on this has turned this into a nice lifelong boycott for me, and I just wanted to warn anyone else against sending in their old baby (RIP Pixel ), if not buying their products entirely. I've since sold that S9 and bought a Pixel 2, which is such a better experience across the board (camera, battery, software, speed, not touching the screen because of tiny bezels, security updates, et. al) it's not even funny - despite running older hardware. Good learning experience for me, and I'll know never to expect anything from the brand again. I hope Samsung enjoys the $125 - I have a number of friends/family who take advice from me on phones, and I'll gladly inform them on my Valued Samsung Customer experience.
Just wanted to get my story out, so I'm sending it around. People should really know what this company is up to... Either way, thanks for reading!

Tbh, judging by the pictures, i'd say Samsung are right. Seems like more than "normal wear and tear" to me. Never happened to any metal phones iv'e ever used or any phone iv'e seen being used carefully (BTW try using a case). In any case, I think it is up to Samsung on what they deem to be "normal wear and tear" unless it is completely unreasonable (which I don't think is your case).
-- not defending Samsung --
What does seem kind of ridiculous is that it took them over two weeks to make the decision that it was not "normal wear and tear", especially when that's after the return period.
As for a class action lawsuit, there are really are no grounds to accuse Samsung of anything. They haven't done anything wrong, just been annoying to deal with.
Dont believe anything a phone manufacturer tells you and you'll never be disappointed. I've been lied to and seen broken promises from LG, Motorola/Lenovo, Samsung and Huawei so I try to make decisions on what I see in front of me and not what they promise. Well, maybe the Samsung promise of monthly updates got me.

Just sayjng, US unlocked phones are sitting on Feb security patches, not June and it was Samsung who committed to monthly updates a year ago.

Slow Samsung updates seem to be a North American issue especially. My S9 (SM-G9600, Snapdragon) bought from Hong Kong, is on the May security patch.
Pulled the same thing with my wife's iphone, but I opened a dispute since I had pictures showing the phone working right before I sent it (they claimed it would not turn on) and promptly canceled the credit card they had on file so they cannot process this charge. Screw Samsung , first no updates for the S9 for 4 months !! Stuck on Feb patch and now they want to rob me of $175, not if I an help it.
