Best ROM that is both fast and has a good camera? - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Hi all. I first was on LineageOS and went through a couple Android versions with them and recently switched to Pixel Experience to try it out. I've loved LineageOS, but the default camera sucked and didn't have wide angle. Pixel Experience has a great camera, but performance is absolutely awful. So I'm in the hunt again for a ROM that is both performant (fast, no lag or hangs) and makes full use of my Moto X4s camera. I did come across crDroid and it seemed promising, but there doesn't appear to be much support for Moto X4 phones outside of a couple random websites and the official crDroid site doesn't have Moto X4 listed. One thing I have really liked about ROMs like LineageOS are the options, including brightness slider. That one's hugely useful to me.
Any ideas?

Here is one of the random crDroid pages I found. Can anyone vouch? Or are other, better supported ROMs a better idea?
https://gearallnews.com/how-to-install-crdroid-pie-on-motorola-moto-x4-android-pie-9-0/

And here's the 2nd page I found for Moto X4 crDroid. Legit?

Thanks. What am I looking at? Do I want the RETUS one since I reside in the US? Are these standard ROMs that get flashed via something like TWRP? Current carrier is Cricket.

very honestly your best bet is to use lenovo's thing to get the latest on your phone.

I did actually try Open Camera, although don't recall with which Lineageos version. I think I had downloaded 4 camera apps to test and that is one I kept. It was "ok", but didn't really seem to improve all the blur I was getting.
I haven't tried Moto Camera 2, although do see its my phone default with the Pixel Experience ROM. Thanks, good to know.

Why does it seem like the rom support to this phone is lacking?

Kind of an off-topic question here, but I'm serious. The Moto X is nearly a year old, and has been rooted/bootloader unlocked since the beginning. Why does every good rom have some sort of hardware problem? (namely audio-related) Every rom I want to try, I back off because they are reported to be buggy. With my Atrix 4G, there were some amazing daily driver roms that I used. But there seems to be no rom that is stable enough to use for the Moto X, or am I wrong? Your guys input on the best current rom? I am willing to go the CM nightly route, because it intrigues me.
Stock stock stock. What's wrong with stock and Xposed? Stock rom is fast and stable. And technically a consumer edition Moto X is NOT bootloader Unlockable. Plus gaining root access is a PITA.

Theming support with stock and Xposed sucks balls. I can't install any good theme. HKThemeManager gives me a "sh: applet not found" error when attempting to fix a theme (I have apktool installed properly and all Xposed modules updated), and most themes won't convert properly for XTheme Manager (errors on rebuild).
I miss being able to theme my phone like I could using 90% of the Atrix 4G roms with the CM/T-mobile theme engine. I really want to stay stock with my Moto X too, because of the motorola features, but the X-posed theme devs (Xtheme and HKTheme) seem to lack in support. XTheme Manager seems to have ceased in development, as it doesn't support CM11 and hasn't been updated in nearly a year. HKThemeManager is being updated recently, but my Moto X doesn't seem to work with it properly, and the developer is quite unresponsive and/or unable to help.
Even when a theme does work, it isn't "complete" like using it with the CM theme engine as intended (due to restrictions with Xposed.
If you have any thoughts on the matter, or other ideas, I'm all for it.
We have Eclipse! But in truth there have never been many "Booted" phones til lately.
K, we have cm, slim, aokp, gummy, PAC man....etc. But, most prefer stock, so they can keep their moto features....the reason many bought the phone. Also aosp/cm roms don't have the moto features.
There are a few stock based roms that have the moto features, but probably not the themes.
And many consumer moto x's can be unlocked, not just dev editions. Its only verizon, at&t and RW that can't be unlocked. Maybe a couple overseas kinds too.
And you can't flash any ROMs without root...and its getting to a point that without an unlocked bootloader, you won't have root.
Really gotta research before buying a phone these days. Forget root exploits, cause like the X, they may not work on future android versions. If you want root, get a phone that you definitely can unlock the bootloader. Nothing else is a sure thing.

Most of those have a problem with speakerphone working, among other audio-related issues. Even some stock-based roms have issues. Seems like this phone just wasn't meant to be customized. To be honest, the phone runs amazingly. Battery life is shocking, to say the least. I just want more control over the appearance of my phone UI. That's all I want.. I just wondered if there was an answer to that besides buggy custom roms...
Do you think the "sh: applet not found" error I'm having with HKThemeManager might be related to me installing busybox with this?

I probably should have gotten the N5... however I will wait to see what comes around for this phone..or if anything comes around for better theming on stock. (The Ex-Themer Xposed modules look promising) Don't exactly have the income to purchase another phone.
EDIT: Well apparently the HK Theme Manager developer either doesn't know what he's doing, or is developing with a pre-Jelly Bean phone, because his app is incorrectly writing files to my Moto X's SDCard.
"Incorrectly" as in not writing them at all. His app throws constant errors stating "File not found" with files the app should be creating. (for example: The copy of the extracted resources not being found before changing the files, or the apk that was repacked not being able to be found when trying to sign the apk)
Can someone that knows what they're doing step up to the plate and make a WORKING theme management Xposed module?! OMG. *Prepares to throw tables
I returned the N5 and got this phone, no regrets at all.

The development will flourish once Motorola ceases their support. And as far as I can say, we will have active display and TC as an inbuilt feature in the future versions of android as google has Already patented it. (for eg. you can see in Project Ara phones)
Necessity is the mother of invention, as you can see now there is no need for roms at the moment since stock is kickass, so less development.

True, but my guess is that once TC and AD become fully available to custom rom devs, this phone's development goals will change, as I feel that those two features are the main reasons people are staying with stock.

After official updates end....people will have to pick: Moto x features, or latest greatest android version. Guarantee our X will stick with last update and keep the features.
Well, wife has it now....if it were mine when support ends, I'd probably flash the latest greatest and live without the moto features.

Nothing against CM....but I haven't used cm in a long time on any device. Just not for me.
But that's just me....many love it!
And I'm not into nightlies either....I prefer stable builds...even tho its less exciting. Lol

Yeah I would probably agree. I want a stable rom that I don't have to worry about. Granted this app makes me want to try CM out.
I'm just kind of surprised there isn't basic ROMs with simple features like advanced reboot, aosp data signal icons, volume warning removed, adblocking, basic things that people generally want. I know everyone says just use xposed but I really prefer to use ART.
This and the Nexus5 are the only phones I've had that didn't immediately get cm. Nightlies are great depending on the moderator and how often they update.
I don't see the point of CM on the MotoX. It's like replacing a bug free stock android build plus great features with a buggy stock android build with different, not as great features.
CM is great to replace bloated UI ROMs. *ahem *touchwiz. Once this phone becomes obsolete I'll probably get the fastest specced phone and CM it... or whatever Motorola puts out next

Great points all around. My old reasoning for wanting roms on my old Razr M was to have a more updated version of Android. With the X I have that without the hassle.

Is it worth it?

So I'm about to change my OPO and I have 2 candidates: OP3 or Z2 Pro.
I'm wondering if the Z2 Pro, in your opinion, will have the same development in the future.
My biggest concern is having a choice if I don't like the stock one.
Do you think CM or other ROMS (Slim, PA, etc) will come for Z2? Or should I just go for the OP3 (which i didn't yet because of high demand 5 weeks shiptime and the camera which seems better on Z2 despite having less MP)?
We have to wait and see how development will be in future. There are some people working in it but nobody knows how it gonna end. Hardware side both units are so close. But OP3 is much better developed and maintained.

Yea, I know. That's why I'm so in doubt. Owning an OPO I know all the development effort put in that phone. Unfortunately there are no other options that I know of with snap 820/6gb ram and between 5/5,5". Even the new Mi5S will be 5.7" in the plus version so that's a no go for me. Same for the LeEco and the Zenphone 3 deluxe.
So my only choices at the moment are getting an OP3 and wait 5 weeks for delivery or take the Z2 pro and hope there will be some development.
God, it's so hard to choose.
Any owner of the Z2 pro can tell me how the stock roms is working? Any bugs? It's a stable phone?

Used ZUI Chinese Rom (Languages only English or Chinese) for awhile before switching to Unofficial CM13. Everything was working fine in ZUI, just didn't really like the UI and everything looks IOS-like, so i changed over to CM13.
Unofficial CM13 is very stable, only noticed two bugs which aren't really major:
-Vibration is not working
-Facebook videos not playing back properly (Not sure if it's an issue on facebook's side or CM13's side)

Vibration for me is not so minor issue. But apart from that, I'm afraid that all the developing can stop out of nowhere (or even worse, never begin) for this phone. Where can I find the CM dev thread?
The phone is awesome,
I am using stock rom with Nova launcher.
Nameless rom is now being developed if that is your kind of thing, I and others have donated to get support for this so I think it should be good, just need to wait for the launch.

The nonplus version has only 64gb rom, dunno about ram (will see tomorrow). Also xiaomi phones don't have the lte band 20 support (800mhz) used in europe (this is a must for me). Add to this the fact that you are pretty much left with MIUI (xiaomi phones don't have much developing). A xiaomi phone isn't more worth than an op3 or z2 in the end. The only thing I like is the double camera, but we have to see how it performs yet.
Also I already own 2 xiaomis and they have some annoying bugs, so I'm more inclined toward something else.
But we will see once they are announced tomorrow.

Is there a Vanilla Android 7 or 8 ROM for Tmobile G6?

Been perusing the forums but haven't found any success. Hoping someone has an option. Recently setup a Google Pixel XL for a friend, which has virtually identical hardware, and the performance difference was night and day: the Pixel KILLS the G6. I can only assume the difference is all the BS bloat trash LG preinstalls, but without root I've found no way to get rid of it. I've got TWRP and have at least once reverted to the G firmware with Android 7, but that's about it.
Any options?
Thanks in advance!
aosp extended (aex) or aquarios might be suited for you. I've using aex quite some times and the developer is still actively maintains it's project. though, don't expect 100% performance increase. The most noticable issues are Camera app and AlwayOnDisplay still has no perfect solution for that.

Why isn't this phone more popular?

It has OLED, popup camera, underscreen FP, and the price is amazing
So why is the scene so small? so little ROM support?
Just asking

I'm asking the same questions. I mean, not even the newer XT has it all.
But perhaps because of it got squished by tons of new devices this year, devices that is given more promotion funds thus more the hype.
I just bought this device few days ago. I waited a couple of months so that the price dropped. Got this for basically USD$200
Weird because the XT and X2 are everywhere on youtube, maybe realme stopped production because of costs? that popup camera cant be cheap to make
I was about to buy it but I heard the stock ROM is reaaaaally bad, did realme say if its going to get official android 10?
And again if there was better custom ROM support I would buy this in a second

Make sense. They must be loosing money on this device, thus they ditched the pop up cam and return to the drop.
But for me the stock ROM is rock solid. For the first time, I kept coming back to the stock ROM rather than all of the custom ROMs I've tried. Not that the custom ROMs are bad, it is just I keep on missing features of the stock ROM.
That said, I do wish that more dev would come in and create more and better custom ROMs for this great device.

Custom roms camera quality

Hi,
I own ZUK Z2 Pro that I have unlocked, flashed with AOSP Extended v4.6 official and rooted many moons ago. I simply can't fault this device or this rom, but one thing - the camera quality is very poor. I know it was poor on official ZUI rom as well, so I had no regrets to move to AOSP Extended, which I am very happy with. And I would continue to use this outdated Nougat rom, but I am about to perform a factory reset, so I thought I could try something newer. However, I read the topics and some new custom roms are somewhat buggy. I can adjust / sacrifice some UI glitches providing the camera gets a quality boost with GCAM mod, which as far as I know is not supported on my old rom.
So the question I wanted to ask is. Are the new custom roms having a better google camera mod to what a stock ZUI app or old custom roms had? Is the gcam worth it? Is there a rom that you could recommend that fits with gcam mod well?

Yes, it's really worth it. I recommend updating to android 10 (PixysOS - https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/pixysos-3-0-4-official-zuk-z2-pro-t4080859).
I installed AEX, although it has good resources, I found serious problems and the above ROM seems to be the best.
You must follow the procedures, updating with original ROM - ZUI 4, and then updating with android 10, in order to use API2Camera.
I'm using this version of GCAM:
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1150/
You have to configure it, front camera not to keep the photos with green tones, you can download an xml with the settings.
front camera Nexus6, and rear google pixel xl.
The difference of other cameras for GCAM (with correct configuration), is very great. You will have much better photos and videos.

Thank you so much for your input. From what I have read about all Android 10 custom roms for ZUK Z2 pro, they all suffer from some bugs and flaws. Whether that is going to improve - only the time will tell, but looking at how old this device already is, we may not see a great improvement.
As you have probably already gathered, I prefer older, more stable roms. Is the GCAM mod so good on Android 9 as well? And is the API2Camera available on Android 9? Thanks

Yes, all ROMs have little problems.
I was running Android 10, and I had a problem with magisk, and I needed to re-install the ROM urgently, as the android 9 files were stored inside the zuk, I ended up going back to the android pie.
I have a lot of activities, as soon as I have some time I will return to android 10, because I thought it was better.
The two ROMs that look best to me are Arrow and PixyOS.
AEX has great features, but it has several problems. I didn't test evolution-X.
GCAM, for me, works best on android 10. But yes, it also works on android 9.
My experience with android 10 (Arrow and PixyOS) were good and I recommend, I think this is better than the ROM with android 9.
In Zuk Z2 pro, between versions 8.1, 9 and 10, in my experience, the best ones are, 8.1 and 10.
As version 10 I can use the latest versions of GCAM, this will be my ROM.
Best version I found:
